We HAD to try this taco place after seeing numerous reviews on line and it didn't disappoint! Note: the parking lot is teeny tiny and "0" street parking around the building. We noted as of 5/3/25: tacos were priced at about $4.80 each. It made sense to purchase the 4 'taco plate' for $19.95, which we did, but you can only order ONE MEAT, but it comes with a decent helping of rice and beans. We got the asada and saved some change ordering this way. This isn't a fancy establishment, they have plain seating inside and wood benches outside in a good sized patio (no heaters). You wait for your number to be called and pick up your food. We got extra avocado, grilled onions and chilies paid extra for the items. The serve-yourself salsa bar has all the goodies you need: cilantro, numerous salsas, limes, etc. The meat was marinated, thinly sliced larger pieces (NOT diced), and quite flavorful. The tortillas appear to be handmade (not from a package). We would eat here again when in the area. The employees keep the place pretty clean and they have open bathroom for guests! read more

It used to be bomb now it's just average to be honest. Lots of other places in San Jose and when gilroy had trucks there was better around town. Prices went up though and portions got smaller and they try to scam/hustle you if you are non-Latino with adding up-charges and hoping you won't notice and scan your time first! The lady at the front desk numerous times has just added avocado ($1.50), peppers/onions $1 & whatever else when they don't even give you that from my experiences or there's a drop of it? Great taco especially varieties of meat available. I am not a fan of taco but whenever I am in Gilroy, taco always my first choice since this place is well known for their Mexican food. I loves that this place had Tripe refers to cow (beef) stomach, which is my favorite meats and lengua which is a cow tongue. I also order the shrimps taco and the fried fish. All three were good except the fried fish, it was not fresh. Each taco was big so 2 tacos can be filling but three for those who have a big stomach. I order 4 tacos and share between 2 person. I also likes the sauce and lemon on the cart so you can takes as much as you want. This definitely a place to eat while your in Gilroy! As for the price, it is between $5-8 each taco but if you want cheese or avocado those are extra. I haven't tried others foods in the menu beside the taco. I always try and go to tacos ameca when I drive through gilroy or I even just drive to gilroy for tacos ameca because that is how amazing their tacos are. At night, the lines get long but nothing beats that sweet smell of fresh meat! The tacos are pretty big so get as many as you can handle or get a meat plate and a side of tortillas so you can make more tacos later! Speaking of tortillas, tacos ameca has the freshest! Not to mention, they have a variety of authentic Mexican drinks (sodas, beers, etc.) that you can choose from. HOLY MOLY. I got the regular carne asada torta and it legit blew my mind. It as about $13 for a half torta. Upon seeing the prices I was skeptical because $13 for half a torta is absolutely steep! I was worried it wouldn't be enough food. When it arrived I was surprised and worried if I would be able to finish it! The torta bread was lightly toasted and fresh as were all the other ingredients inside. There was just the right amount of beans and meat where you got the perfect bite each time but nothing was slopping off. It was messy to eat but I can't explain how heavenly it was. We came here for lunch on a Saturday at 12:30pm. The parking lot was very tiny and we were lucky to find a spot. For some reason, there were a lot of SUVs and trucks. There were a lot of people here but a lot of tables available. The menu had a lot of options to choose from. We ordered a Super Burrito ($8.90) (carne asada), 3 tacos ($3.15) (pastor, carne asada, and pollo asada) and 2 fountain drinks ($2.85 each). I was asked if I wanted everything on it like avocado (additional $1 for each taco), cheese & avocado (additional $1.30 for each taco), cebollitas & chiles (additional $0.65). The food was ready within minutes and we tried out all of the salsa/sauces at the salsa bar. They all tasted good and not really spicy. The Super Burrito was delicious and would definitely be enough for one person. The tacos all tasted good with the addition of avocado and cheese. Al Pastor was tasty, pollo asada was good, and carne asada was also good since it was the same as in the Super Burrito. We were both very full after we finished everything. This was by far the best carne asada tacos I have eaten in a long time! The meat was freshly grilled outside the restaurant. They had delicious homemade corn tortillas made on the spot. Beans and rice were on point! The service was good and efficient. They really know how to move the long lines well. Parking lot was packed so we had to park down the street but it was fine. The restaurant is very loud. We came on a Saturday night so it was their karaoke night, which I have to admit I have never been to one at a Mexican taqueria place. So it was unusual but yet fun to watch. I really appreciated how the food was authentic but yet accommodating to English speakers with their menus in English and having bilingual cashiers. I have gone to other Mexican restaurants that were super authentic but to the point that there is a strong language barrier so I will only go if I have someone to translate for me since my Spanish is not good at all- despite me being Mexican American. My only complaint about the staff is that they never checked to replenish the salsa bar. All the Pico de gallo was gone. It must have been good because the pan was totally empty. Thankfully, there were still some other salsa left and sides e.g. limes, diced onion with cilantro, radishes and cucumbers. Building and parking lot looks, well... Old and antiquated with an uneasy feeling that it's not quite as clean as it should be. The inside is big with plenty of inside seating, music playing making me want to say I I I epha epha, berrrrr-ah-ha!!! "That is not a dig at the Business, I really enjoyed the music". You order at one end of the building and pick up at the other. I ordered a El Pastor Super burrito $9.99 + avocado extra $1.00 in mandarin Jarritos soda $3.50 "total $16 ish" The burrito is huge but the meat was not juicy as I would expect from El Pastor. Also, strangely 1/2 the burrito was room temp, the cheese, avocado and other cold ingredients were on one side and the meat, rice and beans on the other. It reminded me of an old McDonald's commercial to keep the hot side hot in the cold side cold except in a bad way. I'm unsure what the allure is here. The prices are quite high ($25 for a Torta). With the amount of people that were there, we figured it had to be good. We stood in a long line. We were asked to put our masks on, which we did, but then there were people behind us that didn't and were still served. I don't understand why you even asked? The Tortillas are homemade, which was a plus. They were nice and fluffy. Their griddle had a pile of Jalapeños and onions which looked promising as well. It was quite loud in there and the young lady helping us seemed a bit upset that one of our guests was having a hard time ordering. She was pointing stuff out to him, but ignored the fact that he was blind. She also included or removed condiments we did or didn't request. One thing for sure, the tacos are all huge. Two of them cover a plate easily. I had two Asada Tacos and a Shrimp Taco. The Asada Tacos were not the same. One came with just Asada (a lot) and melted cheese. The other with the same, but added grilled onions. And they add an additional tortilla on top. You'll need it for whatever won't stay in the Tacos. The Shrimp taco was served with Bell Peppers, Onions, a large slice of Steak Tomato, Cilantro, Jalapeño, Cabbage, Avocado and Sauce. It was packaged separately, in its own box. I couldn't even see the Shrimp. It really was a meal on its own and I definitely could have done without, because you couldn't eat it like a taco. It was just too big of a mess. The food was not great at all and very overpriced. We ordered a mini chicken quesadilla and it was so small and plain for $6.99. Taco Bell was bigger and tastier. We also ordered asada tacos and the meat was burnt and hard. The burrito didn't have a lot of meat and rice in it and was more rolled with the tortilla. The shrimp tacos was hard and overcooked, and very pricey! $13.98 for two tacos. This place also charged $1.50 for grilled onions and jalapeños. Them 5 stars were earned by the fact that they make them corn tortillas fresh boiiiiii!!!!! Places most especially little hole in the wall establishments such as this are held in a special place in my heart if they come with it with the fresh homemade tortillas! My husband and I went on a Friday evening and were there about 6:00. They are nestled on the corner and parking was a little scarce. Someone from work brought in some Meyer lemons and my heart knew they needed to be eaten with some tacos! My husband and I have been meaning to try this place but just never had the chance and so I finally said "tonight is the night" with the sternest of faces (not that he argued, just trying to prove to you all how what I say goes 'round here ;-P). So we rolled in and there were a good number of people in there already seated and eating and like 3 ppl in line. We stood in this dimly lit restaurant decorated in mexican motif with music blaring and the person running orders belting our the songs. It was quite entertaining. From the front of the restaurant you can see everyone going on in their kitchen area, it's all open. I can respect and appreciate that because you then can see how everything is being prepared. There was even a meat spit next to the stove that had glorious al pastor just spinning in all of its wonder. Next to it on the stove was a heap of onions and jalapeno's grilling awaiting to meat their maker...my tummy! I looked up reviews earlier that day and was intrigued by what everyone seemed to rave about which is called a "molita" basically your choice of meat in between them two homemade tortillas and cheese. So basically one fat meat quesadilla. Yes please and glad I tried it because it was delicious! I had them add some grilled onions and avocado (extra $1 each) My husband ordered carne asada tacos plate that came with beans and rice and a side of you guessed it - them tortillas! By the demolished plate at the end I'd say he was happy. The meat was tender and flavorful, the frijoles reminded him of his mothers (we just wont tell her he said that cuz no ones frijoles should compare). It was 3:30 on a Thursday afternoon and my stomach was mad at me for not feeding it on time. Tacos sounded like a great peace offering to bring my body back to peaceful state of mind. Tacos Ameca says that it's #1 and advertises that it has fresh home made tortillas, oh my! This was enough to sell us two tickets for this food show. I ordered my trifecta of asada, pastor and cabesa with the mandatory works. The suspenseful arrival of our feast had me at the edge of my seat. I picked up my order with a smile and a thankful stomach but this is where the gastronomical existence went into an unexpected recession. The tacos themselves weighed in at about a pound of dead weight. Visually they weighed in at about 5 lbs of disappointment. My tastebuds pushed me into the tasting phase of my experience and that was the day the music died for the second time! It made me want to agree with the flat earth conspiracy theories, because flat was the one and only thing that I tasted. The home made tortillas had no home at all, these were homeless tortillas. The beans were tasteless and I wanted to swap them out for Mexican jumping beans so they could voluntarily jump off my tacos. All three meats were identical triplets and I couldn't tell which was which and I longed for a black sharpie so I could do a Michael Scott on my tacos. I tried to cpr my tacos with some of the "home made" salsas but all they accomplished was to create an unbearable mess and continue to torture my terrified tastebuds! Tacos Ameca prides itself as an authentic taco joint but the truth is that they are simply a wanna be taco place that reminds me of a carnival smoke and mirrors with a sign saying: tacos are not as good as they appear. They usually include other toppings but I wanted to experiment the meat and tortillas on their own, accompanied by cilantro and onions of course. I did a side order of grilled onion and jalapenos because it's the best. They have amazing salsas and I had my tacos within 5 minutes. I'm a little after lunch hour but still! Clean and friendly. Ay ay ay! We pulled into the parking lot at Tacos Ameca on our way from SF to Big Sur. Half of us were hungry and all of us were enticed by the waft of smoke coming off hot coals out the front. Two burritos were ordered and two of us had mad regrets about not ordering burritos also. The al pastor burrito was the best I've ever eaten. The meat was smoking hot (that's the story behind the hot coals out the front), all charred and succulent, enrobed in red-colored rice, habanero sauce, buttery avocado and a soft flour tortilla.
