Quick service, consistently delicious food, and CHEAP authentic Mexican food. I often feel out of place and unwanted when I walk into a Mexican restaurant (and I mean a real authentic place, not an overly Americanized place) and it's often even worse that I don't speak fluent Spanish. Tacos El Rey is totally different in that aspect. They're welcoming and friendly, and happy to do business with someone who barely knows Spanish but sure does enjoy delicious food. I have not been to be other location, but the Sutro one has always pleased me. They have some other best carne asada fries for $5 (I know, white girls love fries) and delicious tacos, which run for $1.50ish. The area is definitely run down and the building is old and also run down, but if you care more about eating delicious good quality food than you do about the age of a neighborhood, then you'll be impressed. read more

I went to TACOS EL REY SUTRO on January 2 2019 at 10 am. The lady at the cashier at the time was very very rude. My friend ordered horchata. He forgot to order it with out ice so he politely asked can she pour it in another cup with out ice. She then said there was no way to do that its to late and gave him a fork and said to go to the table and do it himself. He then sarted taking the ice out at the counter and she take it to the table or leave! So we talked to the manager and he didnt even try to fix it or help. He didnt even apologise. I've found another go-to Mexican spot in El Reno! I checked all the Yelp reviews and this one seems to be the highest rated in Reno. That's saying something as there's so much good Mexican food in this town. The restaurant lies in a strip mall that caters to the Latino community. However, as a gringo, I was politely received. Big props to them for having Olympic soccer on when I walked in the door. I told the counter guy that it was my first time there. He went over the menu with me. For $5, you can get a pretty big burrito with rice & bean sides. I chose the Carnitas burrito, which was great. I washed it all down with a perfect jamaica horchata. This is used to be a great place to eat at but now the food is bad. Today I order, they messed up my order and there was a hair in my food. I had my daughter go pick up the order. When she came home the order was wrong, I called them. They said "Oh, you need to bring the food back for the cooks to check it and then they can add to it not replace it. She did not even say sorry. Oh, I did not understand really because I spoke Spanish. Not going back at all not very customer friendly. I do not know what happen to the customer service or food but I can cook better food. read more

I don't recommend this tacos el Rey , the place is always so messy, waitresses take a while to get to your table even if there's no costumers. The people that work here look mad and depressed all the time . Orders are never complete. I'll almost be done eating my plate before tortillas get there. The other 2 tacos el Rey in town are a little better in regards to a clean area. However, the cooks in south Reno area are extremely slow ! TORTAS! My family has been coming here for the most wonderful tortas and horchata for years, and it has not once ever in my experience been bad. There is this dipping sauce for the tortas, and let me tell you friend, it will blow your flipping mind with it's awesome amazing-ness. The price is great, and the food is better. "Liz" is a cashier here, and she wrote down the wrong order and gave me three completely wrong orders and refused to change the order, saying that because she HAND WROTE it down, it is what I VERBALLY ordered. I never order the food she wrote down. Hope that they never mess up your order, otherwise they will not fix it for you! And she was very rude and unprofessional handling it. This tops the worst meals I've ever had in my life. I ordered chips and salsa, the sauce was too hot, so I spent an extra $3 to get pico de gallo. They brought out a small plate of white tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. Seriously, not a red tomato on the plate. For my entree I ordered 2 pork tamales with a side of beans. The beans were okay, but super salty. The tamales were all masa and barely a trace of pork. After suffering through the first tamale, and looking at the plate of so-called pico, I got up and walked out. What a waste of money. I will never go back. read more

Wasn't terrible, but below average. First the good. The girl taking the order was extremely nice and the real sugar Mexican sodas are nice and cold. Massive 70 inch TV had the gold cup on. Order came out fast but just wasn't good. Not sure why but there's a weird thousand island type of sauce on the tostadas. Beans tasted off and the rice was dry. Carnitas was not that good either. These people "no comprede".... every time I order I tell them to put very little meat in the pozole and they always do the opposite! !! I love and prefer the more authentic type Mexican food places in town, but I had the worst experience here yesterday. My son ordered a burrito and then wanted to add rice and beans before his order was even made (combo style). The cashier was rude and charged us $4.85 for the rice and beans which was almost as much as the burrito. Ok, not a huge deal. I had ordered camarones barrocchos. I understand the shrimp should be "cooked" in the lime juice but these were still very raw. They were blue, slimy and limp...not even pink. I took them up to the counter and she said "that's how we make them." I said I'm not comfortable eating raw seafood and she gave me a dirty look and said "no." I asked for a burrito instead and she pointed to sign that said no exchanges or refunds. It was a bummer! read more

This is by far my favorite neighborhood restaurant! I first discovered this place back in 2008 when we moved to the NE part of Reno. I am finally getting around to reviewing it. Authentic and affordable. I love the carne asada tacos and any of the seafood dishes. The beans and rice are simply the best!
