I touched down in Austin with about three hours to burn, and I decided then and there that I would spend those hours visiting three of the highest rated taco spots in East Austin before writing a three way heads up review, so let's get this party started. Tacos Guerrero vs. Granny's Tacos vs. La Sabroza Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? All three of these taco spots were trucks, with Tacos Guerrero being the largest and Granny's Tacos the smallest. That's not really relevant as all three spots also had nearby picnic tables for local diners, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless that all three were dealing with the same kitchen parameters within which to whip up their wares. Granny's took the cake as far as a quaint atmosphere went with a super friendly server to boot, but all three of these spots were perfectly fine. Tacos Guerrero: Star (1) Granny's Tacos: Star (1) La Sabroza: Star (1) Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? When the heck did street tacos in Austin become so much more expensive than LA? To be fair these are larger tacos, but I was pretty surprised at paying between $2.00 and $3.00 for a single taco. The prices shook out per the below, and La Sabroza had notably smaller tacos compared to the competition: Tacos Guerrero: $2.00 for breakfast, $2.50 for lunch Granny's Tacos: $3.00 for lunch La Sabroza: $2.00 for lunch Granny's were more expensive, but they ended up being the largest, and the best. Tacos Guerrero: Star (2) Granny's Tacos: Star (2) La Sabroza: Star (2) Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? It's here that the grown-ups separated themselves from the children if you will. La Sabroza had some pretty weak offerings in my mind, with mediocre meats (asada had very little taste) that were slightly overcooked. Tacos Guerrero had good tacos for both breakfast and lunch with ingredients that were nice and cooked together, but both fell woefully short of Granny's, which were exceptional. My pastor lunch taco at Granny's was marvelous, with a fresh lightly toasted tortilla, wonderfully flavorful pastor, and some nice peripherals like freshly chopped cilantro and just a smidge of pico that brought everything together with their excellent salsas. Have eaten way more tacos than I care to admit and thought I'd tasted them all...until...Tacos Guerrero. These tacos, swiftly prepared by Yolanda took me to the next level. On our first visit, with only five dollars in our pocket, we tried one chorizo with egg and sausage with egg. Incredible. Best chorizo and egg taco I've ever eaten. What made it special? Griddled and slightly crispy tortilla? Perfectly ratio of egg to chorizo? Something else? Whatever it was it was just perfect. I relish when I can visit again just for these... But wait! We were visiting Austin and tried this little food cart on Wednesday, May 3rd at about 10:00AM. It was run by a very sweet lady and she was so friendly and prepared our food as quickly as possible, while taking a lot of care in making sure she knew what we wanted. The tacos are $2.00 each. Tacos Guerrero makes my favorite migas taco in town, and Yolanda makes you feel welcome at her trailer just like you're a guest at her own kitchen table. I absolutely love the charred peppers that take the migas to the next level. Also, she will add retried beans to the taco, making it even more delicious and filling. Her red salsa, that she chars her own veggies for and makes in the molcajete she sets out on the ledge outside the trailer, is absolutely delicious. The cutest Hispanic lady runs this taco joint and you have to stop by. Each taco is $2 and delicious! She speaks fluent Spanish and a touch of english, so pull out all the Spanish you learned in high school! If she's out of an ingredient she'll suggest something else that's available, and it's always spot on! She has a few tables outside to sit or you can take it to go. This is a great "hole in the wall" taco trailer. The food is legit, it's authentic and comes on homemade tortillas. The owner, Yolanda, is a very sweet woman. Since I didn't speak Spanish their was a slight language barrier issue, but she got my order right for the most part. When she forgot one of my tacos she's insisted on making it up with extra food. I requested no onions and got grilled onions, but I couldn't complain after my first bite. It enhanced my taco and now I want to go on a grilled onion taco quest. Talk about a blessing in disguise. She was generous on the avocado and portions. She's a one women shop, at least it appears that way. If someone can help her out with marketing, maybe a better sign and some trailer TLC, then she can go much further in the taco trailer community. She'd open herself to a broader clientele base. There was a car show near by at the IBC bank that I attended and decided to Yelp some places to go. I found this cute little gem. It's like your Mom and pop shop but in a food truck. I don't know if you can even call it a food truck, it wasn't on wheels. More like on blocks! LOL The prices were super cheap and the there is one older lady that serves. She is the owner and takes care of this little joint by herself. The food was good. Not the best but it was good. I gave her an additiona star because she was so sweet and gave us some mole and we didn't ask for it. She wanted to give us a lot of extra stuff. Owned and operated by the sweetest lady. What I love about Tacos Guerrero is how homey it feels. It feels as if you're at friend's house, and his/her mom is cooking for you -- i love it. When you order your food, the owner will cook it for you on the spot. While there might be a small wait, the tacos will come out fresh and hot! Worth the wait? Yes, definitely. We've been on the road for almost two weeks from Southern California and it seems like every time we stop, the tacos are even better. Austin has quite a breakfast taco scene - not common on the west coast - so we woke up and looked for the best spot. I don't know if this is it - though a lot of people seem to think it is - but damn it, if there's anything better I'm not sure I can handle it. We ordered 7 different tacos for about $15 so I was expecting tiny little things, but we could have lost a few and still been stuffed, but I'm glad we got to try such a big variety - not one disappointed. Im at a loss for superlatives so I'll just say the pastor and carnitas were simply perfect and stood out above and beyond the rest, which were merely amazing. read more

Having grown up in San Antonio, tacos are my way of life. Having tried all the 4 star+ joints since moving to the Eastside, Tacos Guerrero is my fave. This truck is always buzzing but never too crowded. The sweet lady who runs it solo (Yolanda Guerrero) really does put it over the top, she is seemingly here at all hours too (and she has the best availability, open late Sundays). Homemade tortillas + delicious $2 tacos + complimentary cheese and avocado puts this spot in a league of its own. She always throws in a freebie of some sort too, she's the abuella I always wanted. With all the taco trucks in Austin selling pretty much the same things, there needs to be something that makes one stand out over the others. For Tacos Guerrero, it's the super nice Mexican lady who owns it :). Also because she presses her own corn tortillas, and I am convinced that homemade tortillas are where it's at! She doesn't make the flour tortillas here though. All the tacos are $2, whether it's a breakfast taco or meat taco. If you ask nicely, you can add avocado to any taco for free :). She'll slice it up for you directly over your taco. There is also a big cauldron of homemade salsa outside the window that you can serve yourself with. I tried the chorizo egg and cheese and the pastor tacos. Both were delicious! The pastor meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender, which I don't normally expect from tacos. The breakfast taco tasted pretty standard, but I liked that the chorizo wasn't as oily as most places I've been to before. I think she makes the chorizo herself? We ended up here because my friend had to be at the airport in 45 minutes and the Sunday line at Juan in a Million was exactly as crazy as you would expect. I searched "breakfast tacos" and Yelp let me here. It was exactly what I was hoping for. They make their own corn tortillas so definitely opt for corn even if you're more of the flour type. I got bacon/egg/cheese, chorizo/egg/cheese, and al pastor and my total was $6. A steal! I normally have a firm policy that breakfast tacos should have an entire, unbroken strip of bacon and that places with chopped up bacon are just trying to cheat you. That's normally true but the thick sliced bacon in my taco, despite being chopped, was definitely more than just one strip and the delicious flavor of bacon pervaded throughout. The chorizo is still king, though. The kind lady in the truck was handing out free avocado slices to everyone which is awesome, especially since I forgot to ask for it. She was just calling people up after they got their food saying "Aguacate?". Everyone knows the answer is "Si!" They were out of carne guisada but I will return soon in hopes of finding it. Or perhaps the latest combination of fusion (still waiting for those Ethiopian-Mexican tacos) or some exotic cuisine? Are you the type of person that is willing to pay more in line at a food truck than at a restaurant? Or do you just want a non-pretentious, authentic taco served to you by friendly people just trying to make a living? If you are in the latter category of people, you owe it to yourself to try Tacos Guerrero. The food coming out of this truck is nothing short of outstanding. It is located on its lonesome across the street from the Scotty's BBQ truck. Be prepared to speak some basic Spanish, and subsequently be prepared to enjoy what have to be some of the best tacos in the city of Austin. I don't want to sell the bacon, cheese, egg and potato tacos short. They were an absolutely satisfying breakfast. But what will likely make me a repeat visitor to this truck was the best chorizo taco I have found not just in Austin but nationwide. The peppery, bright red chorizo is just short of tender, and lies on a bed of cheese and egg. The taco rests inside a homemade tortilla, and the result is fantastic even before you dip it in a stellar green salsa that should be required for every breakfast taco in America. Similar to Robert G., we were given some homemade menudo while we waited. Although I didn't care for the meat used in the menudo, it is wonderfully smoky and was a solid preparation. Moreover, it was free and super nice of the lady to let us try it. I was introduced to this place by a friend who said they had the best breakfast tacos in Austin. As someone who could (and often does) eat tacos every day, I was skeptical as I've done a lot of "research" on the subject. I'm a taco snob. The orange food truck is easy to miss as it sits next to one of those budget insurance business. Like most authentic taco stands, Tacos Guerrero isn't going to blow you away with seating, atmosphere, or aesthetics. However, this one stands out because I wanted to adopt the sweet lady working here to be my Mexican grandmother. She was so warm and friendly that I really didn't care about the feeling that my order might not come out as expected. I need a reason to brush up on my Spanish anyway. In short, I've gone back two days in a row now. The freshly made corn tortillas are amazing, and everything has been made with quality and flavorful ingredients. Considering their generous size, I feel like I'm taking advantage of her at $2/taco. This place was totally unexpected! OMG! Good'ol Mexican grandma herself cooks and serves surely one of the best tasting tacos in Austin. Tortillas are freshly handmade and the seasoning and taco sauce are incredible. Tacos are packed and will leave you truly satisfied. I also saw somebody order a so called 'menudo' which seemed like a very hearty stew and it was served in a large decorated homestyle glass bowl, which just made me feel as if I was at a home kitchen; now I just want to come back to also try that.
