Stopped in after a hike at donner pass rail tunnel. First impression was it was clean, but we noticed right away it was understaffed. Too many people waiting for food or to order and only one gal to bus and take orders. We did see the food runner do some bussing, but they were struggling to keep up at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. We saw people come in and leave due to the wait. Now a staple at most mexican places is free chips and salsa, but not here. A bowl of chips and salsa will cost you $2.50. These were fresh, crisp and tasty. Son got the chicken super burrito. But he noted "it wasnt worth the extra 2 bucks" as he did not feel it had enough guacamole or lettuce. "Mediocre at best" per the burrito connoisseur. 2 stars I got the carnitas street tacos. They were small but good. Not awesome but solid fare. 3 stars Daughter got the quesadilla and a side of rice and beans. "Can't recommend the rice though. The beans were good." 4 stars Overall 3 stars. Tacos Jalisco is super good and a great find in the Tahoe-area. I'm originally from so-cal and living for over a decade in the bay area, it's always been hard to find decent Mexican food. I would say that Tacos Jalisco is better than most of the Mexican restaurants I've had in the SF Bay Area. You can tell they have quality food just by trying their delicious rice and beans, a hallmark of a good Mexican restaurant. We had: Taquitos - good Carne asada tacos - very good Carne asada fries - excellent Rice & beans - very good I recommend this place to everyone who's coming to the area now. They have a good menu, good selection, good drinks. I would give the food a 4 star but the service is terrible, the food runner would go from table to table asking people of the food he was carrying was theirs. They don't have a good system and then the food takes longer to be delivered, and it get cold. Not to mention the lack of higiene parading your food around. Incredibly fresh tasty authentic Mexican food. We tried both red and green enchilada sauces and both were out of this world tasty. The Baja fish tacos were perfectly seasoned with great seasoning sauce and fresh vegetables. The carne asada Taco's were incredibly flavorful as well as the rice and beans. This is a must try place in Truckee and affordable priced too! On top of everything else everyone working there was incredibly nice friendly and attentive. I definitely recommend!! read more

This place is FULL ON LEGIT. It's hard to believe that some of the best tacos and mole we've had this side of the border was in Truckee. Los Angeles? To be expected but Truckee? My husband and I didn't go in with high expectations but we did what we always do, the authenticity and quality test by ordering a taco de cabeza (beef cheek) and a taco de lengua (beef tongue). Two types of meat that if not cooked and prepared properly can have a terrible consistency and taste. They were AMAZING. We were surprised to find enchiladas enmoladas on their menu since it's not a dish regularly served at generic Mexican restaurants which tipped us off that this was NOT a generic Mexican restaurant. We are particular about mole and decided to give these a shot, the flavor was spot on. Did I mention they serve birria? Again, not your generic Mexican restaurant if this is on the menu. If they can nail authentic dishes then I would say it's safe to assume you can't go wrong with anything else on the menu like burritos and nachos. This will from now on be our go-to place after our Tahoe-Donner mountain bike rides and Truckee Bike Park sessions FOR SURE. No need to go to any of the other stuffy restaurants in the area riddled with yuppies and pretentious tourists or breweries that you could mistake for daycares. read more

First thing if u spend over $80 you get a 15% up charge on a to-go order. Their guacamole taste rotten and old, if you order fajitas they forget to give you tortillas. You specifically tell them no sour cream, it's on the receipt, and they put it on anyways. Flavor is decent, but when you don't have your complete order it ruins your meal and experience, especially when it is a to-go order. Service is mediocre. read more

The two-star "meh" describes our experience. Chips were tasteless. The red sauce (after I requested green sauce) on my enchilada tasted weirdly like ketchup. I asked for ground beef on my tostada and got shredded beef. The guacamole had an effervescence to it, like it had gone bad. Lettuce was wilted. Taco salad was loaded up with so much sauce it wasn't really a salad any more. Dry rice and runny beans. We came here because we've had ok experiences in the past and La Bamba was closed that day. Never disappointed! When coming in to town for a visit, ever since I found it, I try to stop and eat or grab food to go. I went to two other spots for Mexican food in Central Truckee and was greatly disappointed. This little tucked away spot is a fav. I read some of the unfavorable reviews and all I could think is everyone has an off day, short staffed day, etc but I've not found those experiences to be true for me so that's all I can think of. read more

Weeknight take-out run. Full admission - My family and I are not overly enthusiastic about the Truckee restaurant scene (I may have pointed that out in other reviews - sorry). For the most part, the food in town is lackluster and overpriced. The Mexican food choices fall directly into that category, lackluster. We hadn't been to Tacos Jalisco in quite a while, so we gave it a try. After reading other Yelp reviews, I was interested to try both the red and green sauces. Im a fan of both in general. I ordered the carnitas burrito "bandera" style, half red sauce and half green sauce. My wife did the same with the cheese enchilada dinner. The food itself was just, ok. Nothing stood out and nothing was bad about it. The green sauce was a hit. Spicy, tangy and just plain good. The red sauce was sweet. I found that a little odd. I had never experienced a sweet sauce. I wasn't fond of it. Neither was my wife. Prices were more fair here than other Mexican restaurants in town. $35 for two burritos, cheese enchilada dinner and a torta (take-out). We will come back and go 100% green sauce next time! read more

I have been coming to Tacos Jalisco for years and years now and can honestly say it's the best California burrito I've found in the US. I get it with steak and it is so perfectly spicy and cheesy. So good. The quesadillas are amazing as well. They recently redid the interior to accommodate more seating which is also great - the line can still get pretty long, though. read more

The al pastor crispy taco was good. Unfortunately, everything else was garbage. The vegetarian "burrito bowl" came out without beans. It was 90% iceberg lettuce. It was rated as the worst thing ever eaten at a restaurant that didn't cause food poisoning. The red sauce is spicy and tasty. I got the **enchiladas rojas**. It was delicious. The sauce is good, the enchiladas are good, the chips and salsa are amazing. It all just hits the spot after a long day of skiing. I came here with a big group of 12 on a Saturday after a full day of skiing. There isn't that much seating inside but our group managed to pull together three different tables in the back room. The food was good (meat burrito with carne asada for me) and all six of us were served promptly and enjoyed the food... pretty good for a summer Saturday around noon. I ordered food over the phone 1/12/2021 and the lady on the phone was very rude. She told me to hold and after being on hold for ten minutes, she hung up the phone. I had to call back and she immediately put me on hold. I finally was able to order and the lady was very snippy to me. She didn't even say you're welcome when I said thank you. When I went to pick up the food, she forgot to give me my drink and I had to go back inside to get it. The food was very good, but the customer service wasn't. read more

11/9/14: I'm sorry, I really have no idea how it's possible this place is rated so well. Compared to the vast majority of Mexican restaurants in California, both hole-in-the-walls and chains, this food is really badly cooked. 1. Carnitas $10.99... Rice: Wow, THE very worst rice I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant at any price point. Even El Polo Loco has better rice. This rice was very broken and some parts were dry and stuck together and hard. It's like someone took some rice that was stuck on the bottom of a big pot and served it. BAD. Beans: Normal. If you call canned beans normal. Corn Tortillas: WOW--another worst ever. Served in a warming pot. That normally means nice soft and warm tortillas inside. And another thing that no other Mexican restaurant ever screws up... but these tortillas were clearly stale. Dry tasting. Some of them were broken a little. Again, like the leftover of the bottom of the bulk 100 tortilla packages from Costco, then threw into the pot thingy for you to..... use as napkins? Carnitas: 3rd instance of worst ever's! They give you about a small cup's worth. The meat is super dry--zero much needed fat. It's basically pulled pork that has been fried up, and very not-tender pulled pork at that. Another worst ever. And this is my favorite Mexican dish. I've probably had it at dozens of Mexican restaurants. This one is on my list at the very bottom. Ok what's the deal with all the great reviews? We stopped here very hungry with our dogs for lunch. As many reviews said you will see a line out the door, which is always a good sign. I ordered 2 street tacos 1 chicken and 1 beef. They were very small came with a sad radish and an even sadder dry lime. I took a bit of the beef taco and almost spit it out. It did not taste good at all! I tried the chicken and it had no taste, was watery, and chewy/rubbery. For lunch I ended up eating just the tortillas which were just as good as what I could buy at the grocery store. read more

Sorry, but I think that I am going to have to pass on coming back to this place. I was craving Mexican food with my family and based on my fellow Yelp'ers tried this place out. I get that you are in a destination town and the prices are a little higher. What I did not expect was that the quality of the food did not come anywhere near matching my Mexican food expectations or the price. My standard for rating Mexican food is the carnitas. I grew up in Truckee and have been to this place countless time. Now that I am no longer a local I try to stop here whenever I am in town. I will admit I have not explored the full menu and can only speak for a couple items, but for those I can say they are perfection. The tacos & the wet burrito are solid. The flavor is fresh and authentic. The tacos are the simple meat, onion & cilantro street taco style that I love. The fish or steak are my favorite. The Wet Burrito is huge, I typically split it with a friend but the flavor is SO good little bit of spice and a sweetness that is well balanced. The servers can be a hit or miss as far as friendliness goes but the food always comes out fast. The flavor is soo good. Your tummy will thank you. read more

Bottom line: the best tacos in Northern California. I get my taco fix here about once a week and have never been disappointed. I grew up near the border eating authentic Mexican food daily and have searched dozens of taco shops in Nor Cal over the past 10 years trying to find tacos that hold up to El Gordo in Chula Vista or La Especial in Tijuana. Thankfully my search is over. They have several types of meat but, I highly recommend the carne asada or tacos al pastor. If you feel like having something unique, try the Armadillo, which happens to be delicious. No, you are not actually eating an armadillo. This is Truckee, not Texas. It consists of pork, beef, shrimp, and cactus simmered in a tasty sauce. It comes served in a molcajete (traditional Mexican lava stone) with rice beans and tortillas on the side. You can always substitute any of the meats if you aren't big on shrimp or pork or whatever. Please bear in mind that Jalisco's is not for everyone. It is a bit of a dive nestled in the corner of a strip mall near the 7-11 on Donner Pass Road. If you want something fancy, or are the type of person who thinks cheese should always be served on tacos, you will probably not love this place. It can get a bit crowded at times (it usually is) with a mix of locals and tourists and you may have to wait 10 minutes or so to get your food. Their other dishes (burritos, tortas, etc.) are good, but not world class. But the owners and staff are great people and the tacos are truly amazing. read more

Am STILL searching for tacos that match up to Jalisco's here in the Bay Area. These are absolutely the best tacos I've ever had. They're small enough to get in your mouth without getting messy, they're cheap enough to order a goddamn flotilla of them, and they have the best best best flavors. I'm a particular fan of the lengua and al pastor. But especially the lengua. DEEEEEEEELISH! I won't speak for the whole menu, because I really only go for tacos, and that's what you should get too.
