I got a compliment/tip from another Yelper to try TacoSon (which I've had bookmarked for over a year) after I wrote a review about how disappointed i was with Taco Bus' changes for the worst. That's one if the best tips I ever received from someone I don't know! I have a new taco joint I'm craving. Apparently the original owner of Taco Bus owns TacoSon, so most of what I missed at Taco Bus I can get at Taco Son. The meats are all seasoned well. The refried beans are creamy. The Mexican rice is flavorful. I've gone for the combination both times I've visited, but I can't wait to try more of the menu. I was shocked to see a drive thru. This is so great because I'm lazy. The drive thru is what will cause me to stop here instead of Tacos Gone Mobile when I'm on the East side of Tampa. Today HubbyStanks and I came for lunch because we had to erase the memory of a lackluster Mexican dinner we had at Señor Tequila in Westchase last night. There's plenty of comfortable seating inside. The service is straightforward, friendly and efficient. I beg that they don't start cutting corners like other popular taco joints in Tampa. I'd hate to drive all the way out and not get a tasty taco! As for now I will keep making the drive. The tacos are worth it. I know there's one in Saint Pete. I'm always down to try a new taco place and it is really the chips and guacamole that let me know whether or not a place is worth going back to. I ordered the taco salad, with no meat, and you'd think it wouldn't be satisfying but it SO WAS. The chips and guacamole were up to my standards! I was not disappointed with anything. I have only been once but I thought it was great! I had the taco salad (with beef tongue). The taco bowl was warm, crisp and delicious. The beef tongue was tender and flavorful and all the other ingredients were fresh and tasty. They give you a very nice size portion. My only complaint is that they seem to add way to much sour cream (noticed the same issue with diners meals). Next time, I'll just ask for the sour cream on the side. I'll be back!! read more

TacoSon is a no frills casual Authentic Mexican Restaurant which is located off North 56th in the Temple Terrace area of North Tampa. You place your order at the counter, get a number, and a server brings your order to your table. TacoSon also has a drive through available for those in a rush. TacoSon gets pretty busy for lunch but placing our order never has taken more than 5 minutes and we've never waited over 10 minutes for food so we have no complaints with the servers or kitchen ! TacoSun's meat options include: steak, shredded beef, chicken, grilled pork, shredded pork, beef tongue, pork rings in green salsa, and shrimp for an extra charge. This is my home. I can't say anything kinder. I constantly recommend this place to everyone I love. They have great vegetarian options too, and anyone who comes in loves it. The service is always top notch, and know exactly what I'm going to order before I can even say it. They look after you and you can truly taste that in the food they make. They have drive thru available or takeout from inside. We went inside and ordered takeout. Staff was wearing masks and our order was ready in less than 10 minutes. We tried nachos, queso, burrito, tacos and quesadillas and the whole family was happy with the meal. They use chopped cabbage instead of lettuce which is awesome and the servings are really large, very shareable! Highly recommend for authentic Mexican. read more

Two words: refried beans. TacoSon has some of the best refried beans I have ever had! I come to TacoSon often and always have a good experience! It is a no frills restaurant, which I do not mind when it comes to my tacos! The inside has some table seating, but I usually take to-go. There is also a drive-thru! I usually order a 2 taco platter and chips and guac- with their guac on the chunkier side (just the way I like it!). My go to tacos are the Asada and Cochinita Pibil. Haven't been able to find any decent Birria since I lived in Los Angeles and TacoSon did not disappoint. For 10.99 you get a 16oz container or delicious shredded beef in a Mexican beef broth, and a bunch of corn or flour tortillas on the side. The only thing I was worried about was the broth being too salty but it was quite mild actually. The flavors and spices were just right with this dish and my entire family enjoyed it. The tacos were kind of interesting too, they had all the usual toppings with the exception of pickled cabbage. Definitely one of the better places to eat in the whole area. This place didn't do anything for me whatsoever. Their pineapple water was too sweet. Tasted fake and blah. The shrimp and octopus ceviche was just meh. The octopus looked like thick masses of something, can't find a good word, but when bitten into, tasted like mush. It was swimming in tomato sauce with a slight lime and onion taste. The pork tamale had no good flavor just some pork mashed in the middle of a bunch of corn meal. I should have known when my hubby was like, ehh, you are going there. I don't want anything. I will pass. My hubby loves everything so that was a sign. But I had to try it. They didn't have the crab tostada that looked good to me, and I thought a grilled shrimp taco might be good but didn't try it. Meh, not coming back. In town for a concert so we decided to try this place out. I had the carne asada burrito which was delicious and huge! The beans and rice were fresh, too. My husband ordered a bean and cheese burrito and unfortunately, they gave him black beans..twice. They were just too busy for us to say anything again. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but never judge a book by its cover. We had a great experience here. I went with an old friend for lunch. We arrived between 11:00 and 11:30. It was already starting to get full. We placed our order at the counter. They hand you a table number, and you find a seat. We munched on some chips with white queso dip. It's a very thin dip, but it really packed some flavor. Nothing fancy, but it was unique for queso dip. I loved my choice of camarones asado (3 tacos). You can get this in 6 different ways. It's a very large portion. I ate most of it, but I would have been happy with just 2 tacos. The shrimp were very tasty and spicy. They can tone down the spice for you. Just let them know when you place your order. As we were leaving, there was a line all the way to the door. It's a very popular local place. So be aware of that. It may be difficult to find a table after noon. Anyway, I'm looking forward to going back again. There are other menu items that I want to try. The service was good, and it looked pretty clean. I felt that it was better than Taco Bus. I say that because TacoSon's guacamole is way better. I have to have my guacamole. I love TacoSon. My coworkers introduced me to this place as a hotspot for lunch. They have some of the best tacos in the area. My only complaint is that the tacos do have too much cheese, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Their combos are reasonably priced and come with refried beans in cheese and rice. Their rice is delicious and has really good seasoning. I have also seen some of their other menu items that look out of this world. Their "menudo" is some kind of stew soup and it looks incredible. I need to try it next time. Their chimichanga is also ENORMOUS. To be honest you really can't go wrong for the quality and the price. Most combos are around $7.99- $10. They also have tres leches l, which was outstanding, and the horchata was pretty delicious as well. This new spot happens to be close to my Dad's...so I decided to take him there for some lunch. Side Note...my Dad does not really like tacos...I am concerned that we are not actually related. It was cooked well and had it's distinctive earthy rich flavour that cut throught the accoutrements. Chicharron en salsa verde: This one was new to me and I had to order it. It is a great study in contrasts of textures, with a great taste and if your are familiar with the flavors...will not disappoint. The side sauces mild/medium and caliente are all excellent. As a certified purveyor of sauces I take this quite seriously. These sauces are all packed with flavour and even the "spicy" next to the counter is not all that spicy in my book. They all have a rich and complex flavour and add a great component to the tacos...in short....get them. The prices were quite good, while the service left a lot to desire. The order taker was one the phone for a good 4 minuets before she took our oder and my old man's order was delivered in a to go box..which he did not appreciate. He got the nachos...man who raised me and lead me to believe he is my father...they were heavy and not something i would recommend you order. Another great taco place near USF! The menu is easy to read and if you have any questions, the employees are very helpful in answering them. I wanted to try everything but had to control myself so I went for a tostada and and three tacos. The service is super fast. As soon as we sat down, we were already given our waters and within 5 minutes, our food followed. Both dishes came out extremely fresh and hot. The tostada's ingredients were layered together to create a perfect bite. The beans, cheese, and vegetables complimented each other so well with the crispy base. The tacos weren't as impressive but they were still yummy. I wasn't a big fan of the corn tortillas because it was kind of bland and chewy. The carne asada meat was flavorful but the lengua (beef tongue) had an iron/gamey taste unlike most other Mexican places. The sauces that are given on the table were really flavorful, the red sauce had a smokey peppery taste while the green one (extremely hot) had a citrus/jalapeño like mixture.
