The food is scrumptious at Tai Pan. We had the evil jungle prince dishes...shrimp and chicken. My husband likes very spicy food and he ordered his 8 out of 10. He was crazy about it. Honesty...TRUELY....THIS PLACE IS THE WORST. Let me preface this by saying I love Asian food! All Asian food! Ok, so this place looks like a nice restaurant from the outside. Kind of cool actually and the online menu is nice....but the food???....I swear to you on my mother's life, I have had way better Asian food at any random Asian buffet than this place. That's not saying too much for their food because we all know buffets a questionable shot in the dark.. But unlike Thai Pan, at least even a bad buffet has something you can say is good. I've been to so many good and a lot of great Asian restaurants. All over the country, not just local because even though I'm not Asian...its always been my favorite. Trust me on this one, I want to spare you the waste of time and the let down...THE FOOD HERE IS HORRIBLE. This may be the first time I left more than half of my food uneaten ... I DIDNT even want to bring it home. $45 worth and I didn't want it...does that tell you something? Greasy beyond belief (and I like fried food), super salty, and otherwise flavorless are just the tip of the icebirg to describe it quickly.... And we wondered why there were no other people dining besides us...on a Sat night at 6:30pm? Was hoping it would let me give 2 and a half stars. it wasn't that bad, but It's been better. I used to eat here a lot more, but hadn't been in many years. First off - they were VERY disturbed I was eating by myself, but other than that the staff seemed friendly, however as my waitress spoke very little English, it was hard to tell. IT took a VERY long time to get food, even though it seemed like I was the only one in the dining area. Second, neither dish I ordered was what I was expecting. Third, I have an issue with peppers, the dish I received was covered in them. When I tried to talk to the waitress about this her lack of English made it indeed a difficult task. It's basically the only dim sum place in the area, or one of the few, and frankly, given possibly the lack of supply, what you get isn't necessarily the greatest dim sum in the world. Of course, this comes from a guy who lived with a bunch of dim sum snobs from Southern California for a good chunk of time, so I suppose depending on who you are, I should provide a salt shaker for people to take a grain from. It wasn't really crowded, but even then, service seemed somewhat slow, not a generally good sign. I would rather that this review be taken as a warning to the weary travelers out there in Halfmoon... I went to Tai Pan solo on a Tuesday night, there was little to no evidence that there were any diners in the parking lot, and inside confirmed it. The restaurant is remarkably spacious out back, with decorative wood accents, vaulted ceilings and modern lighting. Tables and cleanliness were average, evidence of the day's prep work was still left in the front side tables along with piles of newspapers. Bathroom was average. The dishes: Mostly Cantonese and Szechuan and impressionistic-type Thai. I ordered an avocado "salad", which was one of the most half-assed things I have been served in recent memory, it was literally a pitted avocado with 1-1/2 shrimps in each side tossed with russian dressing, on top of a thin layer of days-old tiny shreds of lettuce and carrot. I am telling you: bottled Russian Dressing. Pathetic. My main course was an "Evil Jungle Prince" shrimp curry, which had some characteristic EJP tomato base and thai curry spices going on, but the use of reconstituted mushrooms, short grain rice, and lack of kaffir lime leaves relegated it handily into the inauthentic "fakers" pile. Digestion got off to the wrong start out of the gate, when a woman (not the hostess) ran out of the kitchen and just plopped it down in front of me with a gasp and said, "For you, ok?!". I ate it fast and just stopped caring like she must have in making it, about half way through. Plus one star for the interior space. It is a redeeming factor, and I think I just ordered the wrong things. I would only go back (if forced) for traditional Americanized Chinese fare and definitely not on a weeknight. read more

Terrible service - waited over 2 1/2 hours for takeout and then when it finally got to us - half was missing or wrong. Refused to give me back any more than $10 on a $70 tab when over half of our order was wrong/ missing. Will NEVER order from here again. When Tai Pan first opened, it was really spectacular. The years since, have really done a number on the building and food. We got takeout but noticed the restaurant was a ghost town. For appetizers we ordered the butter chicken wings & Bbq spare ribs. While the ribs were meaty, they were dry & bland. The wings had a nice flavor but they were few and pricey. For our dinner we ordered standard Chinese American fare, chicken chow mein & general Tsos chicken. The General Tsos was greasy, drowning in the sauce mostly cut with oul. The veggies seemed like they were from frozen but at the same time seemed rotten. Tyne chow mein was drowned in sauce& bland. We won't be back. read more

This is the second time my wife and I went to Tai Pan. Given the first time we went was about three years ago, I didn't want to give a stale review so now that we revisited, here it goes. I didn't remember having a great experience so I was armed with a discount gift certificate to aid the blow. We had Wonton soups and an appetizer (BBQ spare ribs) and they we pretty good. For entrees, I had a mixed dish of shrimp and general Tso's chicken. My wife had something that resembled moo goo gai pan. Both were acceptable, but nothing amazing. I would have expected more of a 'wow' factor for the prices. Other nits I had included the customer service and environment. The waitress reminded me of the classic Chinese take-out phone operator. When she approached my wife to solicit a drink order, she actually said 'So wha' 'bout you lady?" Also, they had radio-station that was playing Christmas music through the sound system; occasional D.J commentary with news. We would have much rather enjoyed an audio sample from one of the represented food locales. Overall: I'm not an oriental food connoisseur. For all I know, this restaurant may be the best place in the capital district for authentic oriental cuisine. However, you may want to save it for the third or fourth date. read more

The place was pretty much empty when we walked in at 12:15 on a Tuesday. The decor, chairs and interior building needs some attention: broken backs of chairs around the tables and packing tape one the window edges to reduce the drafts are just a couple examples. The interior is now a little "tired" and could use some TLC, but the food is still excellent and NOT your "typical" Chinese menu. The service is OK, not great, but not bad. I'm a fan of their Thai Soups.. tonight was a great night for soup for dinner... wife and I each enjoyed a large bowl of Thai Soup.. cannot even remember the names... the fact is, we've tried all of them and they are delicious... enough for a meal.. and just $5.95. We should have known when the parking lot was practically empty at about 7 on a Friday night...I had been swayed by the obviously outdated or otherwise incorrect comments that it was "the best" and an award winning restaurant. The server started off by asking, "whatdaya want?" and it didn't get any better. The food was tough and greasy -- and much more expensive than we usually find! Tried this restaurant last night and the food was not very good for the price and the service was very slow. For the two of us, we were in the restaurant for over an hour and a half - our water glasses were empty a lot and the waiter never came by to see how we were doing. I used to eat here for lunch quite frequently and never experienced the issues I just did for dinner. Don't go if you expect any level of service or actually have somewhere (anywhere) to be afterwards. The restaurant was not crowded at all yet we waited and waited and waited ... you get the picture. The wait was not just to order but to receive the appetizer, the main dishes (the child's portion came out before everyone's meal ... ok in some cases but the child should not be finished 10 minutes before everyone else receives their food). Food quality was good ... nothing great. We had the chicken with eggplant and curry sauce - nice flavor but the eggplant should have been sliced not diced. Really delicious! The vegetables tasted very fresh as did it all. The sesame chicken was juicy tender white chicken and the seafood in the Seven Wonders dish was generous and tasty! My favorite restaurant anywhere. Breathtaking interior, like a modern temple combined with theater sets - a great timeless kind of space in which you can sit and chat for hours. The food is great across the board, served on fire or on platters on pedestals. A recent favorite of mine is the Indonesian Beef Rendang but the General Tso's Chicken is pure splendor. read more
