I was really impressed with the selections on the menu, but the quality of food was more than disappointing. We got: 1) 3-cup 3-flavor. Supposedly duck tongue, squid and intestines. For $12.95, I'd expect it's at least the portion of a shabu-shabu. Guess what, not only is it just a mid-size bowl with really scarce distribution of intestines, there also wasn't any duck tongue. I was told they ran out of it. But what was I recommended this dish in the first place if you don't even have all the ingredient. Does duck tongue taste like chicken to you? 2) Wan Luan pork knuckle. Again, it's a huge disappointment considering it's the "house special". I'm 200% sure the knuckles are not fresh, and was heated up to lukewarm when ordered. The gelatinous knuckle was definitely on the hard and chewy side, tasting like it could use another hour of slow stew. The garlic sauce that came with the meat had an overwhelmingly high doze of sodium. It numbed my tongue. If you are a fatty pork fan like me, look somewhere else. Cause this place is not going to give you that creamy texture and explosively meaty orgasm on your taste bud. 3) Fried egg with oyster. Honestly it's above average among Taiwanese restaurants that I've tried. Pretty decent portion of oyster and right amount of starch. It's probably my favorite dish tonight. 4) Garlic A veggie. First, the Chinese name is Wan Luan Pigs Feet, so please understand they specialize in a particular dish from rural southern Taiwan. When we used to get lost driving country roads without any signs or GPS, we loved to discover small home style restaurants off the beaten track. Pig farms are common in that area, and the local delicacies are pork, especially legs. The restaurant decor recalls these country places, and the food matches the home style cooking there. So, if you're expecting refined modern Taipei street snacks, then keep looking. But if you are in the mood for big servings of roasted pig feet or many similar countrified dishes from backwoods Taiwan, then order up crunchy ears, old Hakka recipes, hearty fried noodles, chunky soup and wash it all down with Taiwan Beer. I was very happy to see this place re-open. It used to be in the SaveMart shopping center. We arrive 7am for dinner. The place was very packed so we quickly put out name down on the waiting list. We found out it is over 40 mins wait so we decided to just order to-go. The man at the counter ask me to put my name down in the waiting list. He told me the kitchen is too busy to take additional orders. I got mad. So he allows us to order our food. When we got home, my order is missing a noodle dish. I didn't even know if we paid for it or not. By the way, this place is cash only. They told me to go 7-11 to get cash. Lucky my husband got enough cash to cover our order. Taiwan Cafe is located in a random strip mall and looks kinda shady on the outside. But once you walk inside, it's like you entered a completely difference place. It's nicely decorated and very clean. Dat pork hock, tho... Hella good! The pork itself has a nice "crunch" but it's also moist. The garlic dipping sauce is SO GOOD! Other dishes are definitely tasty also! Nothing is overly seasoned. My son loves their minced pork with rice. We also like to get the stir fried rice noodles, fried chicken, and oyster pancake. It tends to get crowded on weekends, so expect a wait. The food comes out pretty quickly and the workers are pretty efficient so turnaround isn't bad at all. It's a little out of the way, and the prices are reasonable but a little higher than some Taiwanese restaurants around here, but we still like to go once in a while. The shaved ice looks REALLY good, but we have yet to try it. read more

A successful food adventure with EL & J (and man, are those rare!). AMBIANCE: Looks like Taiwan Cafe took over an old Mexican restaurant. Very spacious, with comfortable booths that give the illusion of privacy. SERVICE: Fast, efficient, and moderately friendly. There was one guy (host/waiter? Owner?) who greeted us with smiles and had us seated quickly. The staff popped over every couple of minutes to check on us and see if we were ready to order (we took a long time perusing their menu). After we ordered, the food came out FAST and they were fairly good about keeping our teapot filled. FOOD: We ordered lots of dishes family style. - Pork Hock: A house specialty... the namesake of the restaurant? Totally delicious! I especially loved the dipping sauce. - Glutinous rice cake in barrel: Good, but the sauce it was drenched in was too sweet/sour. I think its a standard thing though, so no fault of Taiwan Cafe's preparation. - Hard tofu and pork: Very basic dish, a little on the bland side. - Hakka special: Basically a jazzed up version of the previous dish. I preferred this rendition as it was more flavorful. - Salty fried chicken: A staple cafe offering-- Taiwan Cafe's version was pretty good. - 2 bowls white rice OVERALL: A TON of food (we could barely finish) for ~$48 (including tax+tip). Definitely was excited to see authentic Taiwanese food so close to my hometown (San Jose), and a bit sad I didn't hear about it sooner! Usually when my family and I go out to eat Taiwanese food, we order food that we can't easily make ourselves. So we ordered large intestine with ginger, rice cake cooked in barrel, and napa with rice cake. Service was quick, the food was tasty, and the serving size was just right for my mom and I! Overall, it's bit pricey compared to other Taiwanese restaurants that serve the same dishes, but the taste is definitely spot-on. But obviously I'm not going to get the same cheap prices as I would in Taiwan so I can't complain much. There aren't many places with good, traditional Taiwanese food. On top of that, there aren't many places decorated so cute-sy! Taiwan Cafe is a small restaurant located in just some ordinary plaza. The waitresses are really nice and the food comes out pretty quickly! The food is pretty much what I would call comfort food. There are a lot of Hakka foods (which is probably why my dad's side of the family likes taking us here), and definitely all of those traditional Taiwanese foods (ba-wan, ba-zhang, oh-ah-jen etc.). This place is pretty good, PLUS they have shaved ice! (it's not the snow kind, though). Some of the most memorable dishes, in my opinion, are: Pig feet: Oh my god. This was so amazing. Yes, I know. FEET? How could feet taste good? Oh gosh...but really--tender and succulent meat that comes with some sort of garlic sauce, which really brings out the flavor. Definitely try this! I was a bit freaked out to eat pig feet too, but trust me, you will not regret it. Squash with Shrimp: This was really tasty too! I love squash, and this squash was nicely prepped like the way my mom cooks it. It's soft on the outside and chewy on the inside. The shrimp pieces that paired with the squash really added to the flavor as well. Ba-zhang: This was pretty tasty! I liked the sauce that they used, which reminded me of the ba-zhang I could eat in Taiwan. Also, if you're craving the dessert, I'd say go for the combo one. My mom liked the Strawberry one (which I didn't really like b/c it tasted pretty artificial, sweet, and syrupy). Some dishes to suggest are: - Wan luan pork hock: Their signature dish as suggested from the restaurant's Chinese name. The pork is braised and cooked to perfect tenderness. - Three cup pig blood cake: Blood cakes are deep fried before cooking with sauce to make crispy outside and tender inside. - MIT beef stir-fry: Homey Taiwanese style beef stir-fry with basil and onion, a taste you find at local restaurants in Taiwan. I've been going to this place since it re-opened. The food is good but quality is inconsistent. Last night we went back, my son ordered a sticky rice in bamboo cup. My son couldn't eat it because it came with hot sauce all over, which we have never seen before. We asked for a swap, the woman owner came out threw the plate on our table, and said we should have specified no hot sauce when we ordered. It didn't say on the menu! Then she told my son to eat the center and left. This is the rudest hostess I've encountered in any restaurant. My husband was so mad, we ordered another of the same dish and vowed never to come back. This place is more of a 4 star to me but the overall rating is too low so I'm giving it a booster! This review has heavy influence from my parents who grew up in Taiwan. First off place is a bit hard to find since its near residential area- in a small plaza that has lots of parking space. When you first go in you are surprised- high ceilings, lots of cute decorations, an area for buying baked goodies. My dad really liked it and kept saying it reminded him of the country side of Taiwan. Service is 5 stars- they were quick, attentive, and very friendly. Food- according to both parents, most authentic Taiwanese food around. Their chinese name is directly translated as "Pig Feet Kingdom" (or something like that) which doesn't sound that appetizing but pig feet is actually a chinese delicacy and you can image making it taste good is a big job. The pig feet was great tasting, clean, and didn't give you the shudders. The dipping sauce was really yums too! My dad was also very very satisfied with their "Bai Wan" which is super hard to find in America and even harder to make it taste authentic. He gave it a 90% out of 100 hehe. For my mom her favorite was the "chua bing" or shaved ice. Very authentic as well. Ordered some other food which were all pretty yums- on the lighter side in terms of taste. Overall the only thing minusing from this experience is the price is not cheap (especially compared to other chinese places) and its cash only. We are so pissed and dissatisfied, so I gave $ (-5) for tip, which should goes to $25.45 - 5 = $20.45, but turned out that they fraudulently altered credit card receipts so it became $25.45 + 5 = $30.45 on my credit card transaction. There was actually a wait on a Sunday night, but we were seated after 15-20 minutes, and food came out quickly. We asked for all the dishes to be less oily. The waiter thought we ordered too much food for 4 people, but potions aren't that big, and we finished most of the food. 1. Hakka stir fry (客家小炒): Chinese celery, black bean sauce, squid, pork, bean curd strips, chilies, leeks. Very flavorful, a bit salty, really good with rice 2. Three cup mushroom (三杯香菇): a bit under salted. It was still pretty oily even when we asked for less oil. I love trumpet mushrooms, though 3. Stir fried A vegetable (A 菜): good garlic flavor 4. Glutinous rice (筒仔米糕): really good flavor and texture, loved the sauce 5. Shrimp fried rice (櫻花蝦炒飯): the small shrimp were interesting. This was also a bit under salted but went well with the other dishes 6. Pork knuckles (豬腳): good dipping sauce, and the skin was basically defatted 7. Pork chop (炸豬排): good flavor, served chopped up for you 8. Stir fried shrimp (清炒蝦仁): really good flavor, lots of scallions. Good texture on the shrimp too. Loved this 9. Fried dough with condensed milk (炸銀絲卷): sweet and nicely fried, best eaten warm We also got some Taiwan beer, and I was happily surprised that they had chilled glasses. Service was excellent and the lady there was really nice...especially to me. Probably because she was surprised that I could speak to her in mandarin fluently. The food tasted like my Mom's old cooking which is more than enough for me to enjoy it. Their Taiwanese oyster pancake, black pepper fish, and wan luan pork hock is highly recommended! Overall it is a little bit pricy, so if you're ballin' on a budget you might want to go in a group. This is the first restaurant that serves the Taiwanese food that reminds me of the wonderful island. I was so excited when I looked at the menu I over-ordered. Found this place via yelp and I'm glad I did! It's not the best Taiwanese restaurant, but since it's only a 10minute drive from my place it's definitely worth coming to whenever I have a craving for Taiwanese/Chinese food! Hakka stir-fry: very good! every house has their version of this... they stir fry gan-tofu (dried tofu), Chinese celery, green onion, squid and pork. Reminds me of home. 3cup 3dish (??): not sure if that's the actual translation, but it's like 3-cup chicken, but they have chicken, intestine, and squid. Normally this dish boast strong flavors, but their dish was on the mild side. I wish they served it in the clay pot to give that "roasted" flavor. It's still good, just not how i prefer. Pork hock: very good! loved the tender meat, but the skin still is a bit "Q". I don't like my pork hock soft, I like a little bite to it. They serve it with a garlicky soy paste which gives it a perfect salty, but sweet sauce. Pig ear: very good! Just how I like it. It's sliced thin, but not too thin. They use the same garlicy soy paste sauce as the pork hock. Love it as an appetizer and add a spoonful of chili sauce on top! Si qua with salted egg: just okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable. Maybe I'll try the si qua with dried shrimp next time. Desserts: Lotus flower sesame rice balls (?): SO VERY GOOD! This is a warm dessert in a huge bowl, so definitely share this. They serve it as this egg drop lotus flower rice wine soup with small sesame rice balls. The rice balls are so chewy and just the right amount of sesame paste inside. LOVE IT. Red bean shaved ice: just okay... it's good for what it is. One of my favorite Taiwanese Restaurants in the area. First of all, order the House Special Pig Knuckle, as this place is one of my favorites to order this dish. The texture is nicer and it is quite flavorful, even without the dipping sauce which makes it phenomenal. We usually also order the intestine with pickled vegetables which is very good, the "ke jia xiao chao" which I think translate into Hokkien Stir Fry, glutinous rice, brown sugar w/ fen guo, oyster omelet, fried rice and chicken roll. For die hard fans of pork hock (pig feet), Taiwan Cafe is the only place to go in the South Bay. Located in a nondescript and rather sketchy-looking strip mall in north Milpitas, the place is a haven for all those looking for some ridiculously cheap and good Taiwanese soul food. The interior is surprisingly spacious and looks like a reclaimed southwestern-themed restaurant. You almost expect to see tamales platters going by. My usual is their awesome bowl of pig feet noodles with de-boned pig feet! Having gnawed through my share of pig feet, well into the hundreds over this lifetime, I almost feel like a minor royalty to have such pampering. You get nice little slices of delightfully gelatinous pig skin and juicy pork in a lightly salted but heavily seasoned broth. It's just chocked full of fried garlic, onions, and fresh cilantro. Just heavenly, like home cooking. If you want extra pig feet, they'll even serve up a whole plate of it, all de-boned. If you think working for your delicious morsels makes them taste better, you can have them leave the bone in. Their sides are pretty good too, deep fried chicken, pork intestines, blood cakes, pig ears, etc. At $30 with tip for 2 with sides, the tab was so low, I had to check they didn't miss anything on the bill. read more

Since our our original selection was closed we ended up driving by this place and decided to stop in. We came closer to closing so the place was not that crowded. The decor was interesting - it is made to look like you are outside so the ceiling is painting like clouds etc. We ordered the green bean chicken, kung pao beef, and egg drop soup. The food came very fast and was nice and hot. The kung pao beef was sooooo good. The beef itself had a great texture, it was moist and had a great spice to it. Most times when I order beef it feels tough but this meat was very very good. The green beans were crisp and has good flavor but I had a hard time finding the chicken in the dish. The egg drop soup was also very good and came in a generous portion, easily enough for 2-3 people to share. The service was very good, refills were fast. I really enjoyed the meal that I had here and would come back again if I was in the neighborhood. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great bite to eat. One interesting this is that at the register there is a sign that says card maximum $30? I have seen signs for a minimum but never a maximum so I am not sure the reason for this but since our meal was under $30 I did not have a chance to ask. read more

My family and I decided to come here because just two days ago, my aunt and uncle came to this exact restaurant and raved about their slushie ice dessert. We decided to get some dinner, and then get the slushie ice afterwards. We ordered a total of 6 plates: - pork feet appetizer - green veggies cooked with garlic - fried rice with dried shrimp - some sort of rice noodle dish with red sauce - fried tofu - oyster pancake All in all those were really good. The only one that was sub-par was the rice noodle dish, but my aunt swore it tasted a lot better when she came here last. The oyster pancake is nowhere as good as the ones they make in Taiwan, and sure I've had better but it was still pretty good. Fried tofu was very good. Crunchy on the outside but juicy and tender on the inside. Great dipping sauce too! And last but not least, we got the slushie ice. Honestly probably the best slushie ice dessert I've ever had in the US. Just sweet enough with just enough ingredients to make you want more! If anything else, go for the slushie ice dessert. I came with my boyfriend who is originally from Taiwan and as soon as we walked in, a big smile appears on his face. He says the food is as close as it gets to Taiwan. We ordered the ginger chicken soup which was very tender and flavorful. The soup tasted more like a combination of multiple spices coming together rather than a soup base being overpowered by the ginger. We also ordered an egg omelette type of dish with daikon which was really good. My boyfriend told me I should eat that using the pepper sauce as dip. I wasn't a big fan or the pepper sauce since I felt like it tasted too garlic-y for me. I prefer the pepper sauce at Thai or Vietnamese restaurants more. He also ordered this stir fry pork and veggie dish, sweet glutinous pork, and rice with chicken. The stir fry was okay and had more of a sour taste to it (lime-y). The sweet glutinous pork dish had bamboo with it which was a plus since its such a heavy dish. The rice with chicken dish also came with bamboo, egg and ground chicken. It was really good in my opinion. For dessert we got shaved iced with a variety of beans and jelly. I wasn't a big fan of the bigger beans though. Overall, we will be back. Came here with a couple friends who come often and even used to go to their other location off Great America Parkway. I thought it was pretty good. I wish someone took photos of the menu so I could point out what we ate since I only know the Taiwanese name for some. The ba-wan was good and also the be-goh. The fried tofu (not stinky) was also very nicely fried and light. They ordered a flash boiled squid with ginger and some dipping sauce dish which was ok and also some pig feet which I didn't eat. The place was packed for lunch and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food. The service was also great. The outdoor setting painted on the walls was cute. If you're in the area, try it out. It's great to see Hakka cuisine in the Bay Area. I came here because I really enjoy supporting any restaurant that has "Taiwan" in its name and is actually run by Taiwanese. I came here with my brother and friend and were promptly seated. The ambiance is quite nice and it reminded me of theme restaurants in Taiwan. We ordered the house special Mi Tai Mu (thick rice noodles which is a Hakka specialty) and intestine with pickled vegetables. While my brother was hesitant to eat intestine, he really enjoyed the dish. Both dishes were great with rice and we ordered extra rice because the dishes were so flavorful. We also ordered a fried pork chop appetizer, which was surprisingly delightful. I would recommend ordering it to start your meal. After reading through some of the reviews, I think some people who gave this restaurant bad reviews maybe just don't like Taiwanese food in general, or perhaps they prefer fake Taiwanese food? Just moved back to the South Bay and I am so happy to get my fix of delicious Taiwanese food. Taiwan Cafe has all the quintessential Taiwan eats and they were all quite good. The place is surprisingly much nicer on the inside than what you see on the outside, since it is located in an old strip mall, but inside they serve lots of delicious Taiwanese goodness. We had the: sausage fried rice, lu rou fan, shanghainese nian gao, 3 cup tofu and all were delicious! Lastly we had the shaved ice for dessert. All and all a decent meal at a decent price. I will definitely be back when I get a craving for Taiwanese food! read more
