Out front, September 2021.
Tanis L.

I came to Take-a-Break Cafe with my uncle and my aunt in the morning on Sunday the 5th of September 2021. I treated them to a breakfast out. The workers were friendly and the restaurant clean. One booth table was open, which we lucked out and got, and a few spots were open in the parking lot. When it came to payment, it was easy to get the bill before my uncle and aunt, who are regulars here, could grab it. I appreciate the wait staff didn't interfere and not let me pay. My uncle and my aunt both ordered scrambles, which were in the $12-14 price range and I went with a $9 ham burrito. The burrito was tasty, though the tortilla could have been a little softer. Some places provide huge portions, the portions here were manageable and the burrito was just the right amount of food for a morning meal with no leftovers. The scrambles and accompanying sides were not too large of portions either and my uncle and aunt greatly enjoyed them.

Dryden scramble with crispy hash-browns and sourdough toast

This is the epitome of a hole in the wall restaurant. What they lack in space they make up for in taste. My daughter and I both had the Dryden scramble with sourdough toast and it was really good. The host and waitress were very pleasant and on top of making sure we were good throughout the whole meal

Omelets and French toast!

Doesn't look like much outside, but great food and good music. Order the curly fries. Does anyone ever really want steak fries? Nah.

It's not El Gaucho but it wasn't $100 either. Very good. My wife had a burger and it was excellent. Sweet potato fries were great. Good value and very good meal. All the food was fresh, hot and delicious. The tomato bisque was exceptional! Terry, the cook, came out and said hello, asking me how I liked the meal. I let him know that I'm a trained chef, and his meal was fabulous! The waitress said he's worked there for 15 years, that his specialty is prime rib, served every Saturday. I will definitely be back for that. This bar has been here 85 years, and I moved here 30 years ago but had never been here till this evening. I'm guessing the food here is better than most of the restaurants in Wenatchee. The decor is plain and simple. The ambience is what you would expect in a local bar with a long history and a loyal local clientele. Nonetheless, the service was excellent and the staff was friendly. Even being charged a 4% credit card processing fee, food pricing is better than other restaurants. So are the quality and portion sizes. New tables and chairs with cushioned seating fill two dining rooms. And there is plenty of offstreet parking. All things considered, it's worth the 20 minute drive from Wenatchee down to Rock Island, just to enjoy the food and the drinks. I don't think anyone gets turned away here. What's not to like? This was a five star experience for me.

Tonight, the Winter Olympics from Milan Italy were the topic, but my son and I were more interested in having dinner. He eats here often and recommended their Smashburger (see the pic). Nothing about them was smashed--they were humongous burgers--well worth the price, with all the garnishes, and fries. Seriously, you can't leave here hungry! Most of the menu is café and backyard barbecue type food, but the 12 ounce ribeye with a dinner salad and a loaded baked potato really stands out. I posted their current menu, 2/18/26. I'm impressed with the seating-- all solid wood tables and wrap-around chairs with armrests--very comfortable, especially if you're watching the TV for an extended time. One combo-waitress-bartender handled 20 patrons effortlessly--service with a smile! And of course there is a full-service bar in the main salon with a pool table, darts and gaming tables on the side, and lots of offstreet parking. Four stars for sure, maybe five!

One of us ordered fish and chips to split and asked for the extra piece at an extra price as listed on the menu. He said we don't do that. When we pointed out that the menu said you do he said well the cook makes the menu they can do whatever they want. He was rude and condescending the whole time and did want to be there. He never smiled or asked how our meal was and then I had to hunt him down at the bar to pay. When I paid cash he asked if I wanted my change which would have been a 30 percent tip if I didn't take it. When I said yes he glared at me and acted like I totally put him out. His lack of service and nastiness was noticed by all in our party. If he is the owner that is a shame and if he is not I would recommend replacing him. We all enjoyed the food and drink it was only the service.

Since we had to make the almost 6 hour trek home the next day, we went for an early dinner and were the first party in. Service was kind and quick! Everyone was super friendly. Only thing is with it being just freshly opened for the day, it felt a bit like we were intruding on the staffs prep time - no one made us feel that way there was just a lot of work and chatter going on. I assume with the name Mozart usually there's some form of music (I would assume classical) that maybe just hadn't been turned on yet. But no bother. Food was fantastic. The fondue is not to be missed - the sausage and broccolini were clear standouts with this dish. I got the hunters schnitzel which was great but my husband got the Käsespätzle which is one of the absolute best things I have eaten out in a really long time. Like an oniony cheesy spatzle Mac and cheese. YUM. Should we be back in the area, we would go back again for sure!

Unfortunately, the restaurant was already running about 45 minutes behind and no one communicated this to the long line of guests standing on a steep staircase waiting to be seated. Given that the evening was reservation-only, it was surprising how unprepared they seemed for the exact number of people they knew were coming. The space itself is quaint and charming, and the food was reasonably tasty once it arrived. But the service left a lot to be desired. The hostess was uncommunicative and initially tried to seat us at a shared table in the middle of heavy foot traffic. When we asked about an empty private table that had been sitting open the entire time we were waiting, we were told it was for "VIP" guests. Our server seemed overwhelmed and not very attentive. She had to ask for and repeat our orders multiple times, still brought the wrong dish to one person, and served three meals while the fourth person in our party waited another 10-15 minutes for theirs. When we asked about the delay, it felt like we were inconveniencing them. Overall, it was disappointing. The restaurant has a lot of charm and potential, but the lack of communication, organization, and basic hospitality made for a frustrating experience--especially on a night that was clearly planned around reservations.
