Completely rude and condescending people! We sat in the front waiting for someone to seat us and they just looked at us without saying a word. I checked the front and it showed that they were open for another hour and half. Then I asked them if they were open and they said yes, then turned around and ignored us. We left after being ignored twice!!! My 7 year daughter then needed to use the restroom and they followed me out afterward saying it's not open to the public. I said "if you would have seated and acknowledged us we would have been customers!" The nerve of them!!! I don't support businesses that discriminate! It appears we did not look like the majority of their patrons eating there whom they paid good attention to. Shame on you!!! read more

Came here for lunch. Rang the bell and waited for service for 15 minutes. No answer. Rang it again. A guy came that couldn't take my order. Waited another 10. No one came to take my order so I went next door to run an errand and came back. Tried again to ring the bell. I looked right at the guy that supposedly went to tell someone I was ready to order and when I asked him what was up and why it was taking so long to get some service he just ignored me. Pretty bad customer service during lunch hour. Wasted half my break. At that point someone waiting for a pickup order said she had waited almost an hour between her order time and it still wasn't ready for pickup so I left and wrote this review. Food was a bit overpriced for small portions. Nothing special. Also, it's the middle of summer and the AC was barely on. Everyone was sweating... There wasn't that many people and they still messed up orders and 3 people got their food way after everyone else By the time it was time to pay, the check was a nightmare. We had a large party and it took forever just to get it split between 2 tables. The checks then came without it being itemized, so we couldn't even tell if gratuity was already added (it was). The second check was also wrong, where they overcharged us. By our calculations, it's still wasn't right but we were just over it. Can't believe they charged mandatory gratuity for such bad service. Although im not a big fan of Thai food, i have to say i really like this place! I had the Panang curry with duck. It can be hard to know how spicy something is going to be at a thai place which is why i usually avoid them. I hate when they say something is spicy and its not spicy at all cause they are catering the the US customer. So I had to ask "is it Thai medium or American medium?" he said its Thai medium, so its a little spicy, so i requested it to be between medium and spicy. It came out perfect! Not overly spicy so that you can't taste anything else, and not too mild. Made you hot after a few bites, but not enough to sweat. The waiter also brought over the caddy of spices and explained if you wanted it hotter, they had just plain dried chillies, chili and garlic sauce and fresh chilis and fish sauce. It was a bit on the sweet side (coconut milk) but still very good. Everyone else enjoyed their meals as well, the steamed cod was a HUGE portion and looked delicious! It came in its own fancy chaffing dish simmering in lemon grass broth. most dishes are between $11 and $13. Good food, service and atmosphere! read more

The crazy old lady that works there isn't afraid to haggle you for a higher tip so watch out. She did this to my friend and it was just rude. My friend works i on tips and she isn't frugal with tipping. Food is still good here but there's other options down on poway that are better. We got to use our $40 coupon [for only $20] last night and I was uber excited!! One of my favorite thai places for sure! But of course we come here on a Friday night at 6:30pm. THEEE worst timing to go!! We actually had to wait for a table which wasn't even long [5min] We ordered: Takhrai Thai Sampler [$13.95] Combination of satay, spring rolls, triangles, and shrimp twists. 2 each. Spring Rolls were just ok nothing special. The triangles were really yummy. Satay was cooked perfectly! They give one chicken and one beef. But my favorite was the shrimp twist. The sweet and sour sauce it came with was delish!! Tiger Cry [$15.95] This would be an amazing dish if the beef wasn't so tough. It came with yummy veggies and they bring it out Fajita style. Still sizzling when they bring it out. I actually just ate the rest of my left overs and the beef tasted a lot better the next day. Not as tough. Don't know if I'd get this again because it was too pricey. Pad Thai w/chicken [$9.95] MY MUST GET! Always :) Don't forget to ask for the spice rack! I also love the Pineapple Fried Rice! That is also a must get and we were torn between getting that or the appetizer. But we wanted to try something new. Definitely ordering this next time I go back. The staff is also super friendly. Even tho we went at the worst time [because everyone and their mom was eating dinner] it took them 45min to bring out our appetizer. But we knew it was super busy. If you want BAD service and a possibility of FOODBORNE ILLNESS you found it. My wife and I went at lunch time we were seated and were asked if we wanted soup or salad. We picked the soup what a mistake...unless you like spoiled mushrooms in your soup the kind that are supposed to be white mushrooms but the ones in our soup were brown/black in color and had that distinct odor of rotting food. We were about to leave when our main course came beef pram ram...and the meat was 90% fat and to top it off it was raw hahahahaha I don't know if I should laugh or cry. I talked with the owner and she just brushed it off not really paying attention to what I said. Hope I don't end up in the hospital this weekend. Still a favourite for our lunch and occasional soirées but it's a pity we were denied the 15% check-in for lunch and still don't get the garnish with the water which other Thai eateries provide. Yelp should publish that caveat about being valid for dinner only. Business appears to be slow on weekdays and the staff is watching every penny - perhaps under Management direction. The food however is curated with care and served with professional aplomb. It is a tough economy so we should be kind I guess? A word of advice. Business and operations matters are best discussed in the confines of an office and not at the top of your voice in front of customers who've just come in to enjoy a meal. This may be the best Thai Chef in San Diego! A must try. The owner is one lucky SOB to have someone like her running the kitchen. Come for the lunch special. It's hard to beat the taste and quality for the price. Choose vegetarian, chicken, beef, or pork any style for $7.95, or upgrade to duck, calamari, or shrimp for $8.95, or upgrade to scallops or mixed seafood for $9.95. The food is excellent and as authentic as it get's. Most Thai places are cheap and dilute their use of coconut water in their sauces and dishes. Like some other overpriced places. "Rama" downtown. I've eaten in Thailand while traveling and this food may even be better. The cons about this place is that's hard to access from Pomerado Rd if you're heading east. If you miss the access to the retail center it will cause a 5 min detour. It's also far from the freeway. read more

Stopped in for dinner. Dinner starts at 5p, but there were already people waiting outside. Mostly old(er) patrons. Note: There are no HH specials nor early bird specials. Perhaps Poway-ers just like to eat early. Ordered the following: (I don't care for spice, so we opted for no spicy on all entrees.) -Tom Kah (Chicken) Hotpot ($12): I really liked the flavor. All the "spice" was at the bottom so whomever gets the last bowl, gets the spice. The chicken pieces (breast) and the tomato pieces were a little too big. It would be ideal to cut them in smaller pieces, but that's my opinion. -Sizzling Spare Ribs ($13): This was pretty decent. Staff comes out with a sizzling plate and they pour the sauce on top. Liked the sweet flavor. They are rib tips (or what looked like bite sized ribs). Don't expect your typical pork ribs. One of the popular entrees since I noticed the next table also order it. -Takhrai (lemongrass) BBQ ($14): I didn't care so much for this entree. It had too much peanut sauce and it was too over powering. The chicken we requested was dark meat. Although tender, I just wasn't feeling it. It's probably best to order the sauce on the side. The service was good, but had to request water refills a couple times. Located right at the intersection of Pomerado and Scripps Poway Parkway with ample parking and next to Lappert's. I would have given 1 STAR, but the Tom Yum soup was pretty delicious. I am new to the neighborhood and, of course, wanted to try a Thai restaurant. I saw that Takhrai Thai isn't highly rated on Yelp, but I thought I'd give it a chance! I ordered TO GO - Pad See Ew noodles (w/ beef - $9.95) and Tom Yum soup (w/ tofu - $4.95). When I opened my Pad See Ew noodles box, my boyfriend and I instantly smelled a burnt scent. I tasted the noodles, and thought it was just fine. But as I continued to eat and look through the dish, I tasted, smelled and saw that it was way over-cooked. I also asked for a medium spice, and didn't taste the spice at all. I'm not sure if the peppers were burned in the cooking process because I saw black pieces in my dish. Unfortunately the beef wasn't savory, quite dry. I couldn't eat much because it was so unpleasant - (not dramatically speaking) like burnt, charcoal tasting. The positive about my experience was the Tom Yum Soup. It was delicious and not too heavy, like some restaurants. I loved all the vegetables they incorporated w/ the tofu selection (broccoli, tomato, lettuce, carrots, zucchini & mushrooms). Also if you check-in on Yelp, you can receive 15% off your order which is awesome! Pad See Ew is my favorite Thai dish and it was unfortunate that it was dissatisfying. I have come here a few times over the years because it is the closest Thai restaurant to me. I usually get those "buy one entree get one entree free" coupons in the regular mail but before I left home I could not find it. Oh well, yelp had a 15% coupon. Two of us ordered soup and my wife's soup had no flavor and my Tom Yum was just average (yes, I have been to over 10 Thai restaurants in San Diego and have travelled in Thailand so I know what is great versus average versus poor). Maybe five minutes (at most) after my soup was brought out all the entrees were brought out as well. Why the waitress could not wait (and see) to bring the entrees until soup was done is weird. Also, my wife told the waitress that the soup should be sent back due to poor/no flavor and was told "we can add more salt." We told her no thank you. No need to doctor up a poorly made soup with salt and bring it back - especially when the entire table was already full of other entrees. Even though the place was relatively quiet they were quick to bring the bill as soon as we seemed to be done. Clearly they did not want us to linger. When the bill arrived it still had the flavorless soup on the bill. I also wanted to apply my 15% yelp coupon. When I told the waitress that the soup was still on my bill and that I wanted the 15% off via yelp (I showed her the countdown timer screen and clicked redeemed in front of her eyes) it seemed to fluster her and she had to go speak with someone - right near me which was awkward to watch them discuss the "issues" I presented. She then came back to look at my phone regarding the coupon and I told her that it was already redeemed and there was nothing else to show her. In the end the item was off the bill (had they not taken it off I would have just deducted it from the tip) and the 15% coupon seemed to have been applied. Moral of the story: -Don't bring entrees out until soup course is complete. Don't rush people out of your restaurant. -If a customer says the item sucks don't say we can add salt to fix it (just politely remove and take it off the bill). -When someone wants to use a coupon don't make it a national debate with the staff and just apply it with a smile. Train your staff to know how to deal with yelp coupons and don't make it akward. If you don't like coupons then don't offer them. Yelp does not force you to offer coupons. My family has lived within 5 miles of Takhrai for the past 10 years. Over that time we've tried our best to support local businesses - Takhrai is no exception. Unfortunately, our many experiences have been hit-and-miss. For the most part misses. Delivery Service: 75% of the time, something is missing. My wife and I learned to expect this and have adjust accordingly. For example, we maintain a stock of crushed peanuts and a jar of chili paste. Pricing: On the higher side for Thai Now here's the real problem ...... Food Quality: we've noticed a significant drop in the quality of the ingredients. The beef and chicken has gone from 'OK' to 'Very Bad' quality. Earlier this week, the beef used in the fried rice we ordered was so tough - I fear my children would choke on it. We have decided to take our business elsewhere for the next 6 months. We'll give Takhrai another shot then. Assuming they make it ..... read more

FINALLY!!! A decent Thai place in the Poway area! Good, good Thai food. We tried the spicy eggplant dish and one of the glass noodle dishes. The spicy eggplant was superb, one of the best of that sort ever tasted. The noodle dish was good too, if not our favorite. We regretted not eating the drunken noodles or Pad Thai even if those are a bit cliche. The lunch specials come with rice (even the noodle dish!) and soup or salad. My husband went for the soup and I went for the salad. I was even impressed by the salad at this place. It was very small, but they went to the trouble of adding peanuts, a wonderful coconut, peanut dressing, bean sprouts and even tofu. Quite a bit better than the usual ordinary side salad. The soup was quite good (Tom yum) if a bit on the fishy side due to a liberal use of fish sauce. I like that flavor so enjoyed it. In fact, the only real negative about the food from this place is that they had a rather heavy hand with the fish sauce. The food was a bit too salty for my taste (although mixed with the rice it was fine). It was so full of flavor though that I didn't mind. Spicy here ( I didn't dare the extra spicy option) is perfectly edible and even a bit tame by my standards. When I finished eating, my lips had a pleasant tingle to them but weren't burning. It all depends on your standards though as my husband stopped eating my dish after a few bites. This is a trick I've learned over the years when I want to save the good stuff for myself. This is my favorite Thai place in town. My boyfriend and I are regulars here and the servers who work here always get really excited when we come in ("HIIII!!! Welcome! Welcome. Sit down, sit down. Is here okay? Why We No See You Long Time??!). This place is a step up from casual and the prices reflect that. I always order the Tom Yum soup and my boyfriend orders Tom Kha. We share the fresh spring rolls with shrimp and a side of peanut sauce. My boyfriend and I have eaten at a lot of Thai places in North County, but this one is our go-to. The pineapple fried rice is really beautiful and is served in actual pineapple shell. A+ for presentation on that entree. My boyfriend's favorite is the Panang Curry. Lately I've been mixing it up and trying different things on their menu. The service here is excellent and it is nice to treat yourself to a step up from casual dining. When we order one appetizer, 2 cups of soup, two entrées, w 2 drinks the bill comes out to be about $45, without tip.
