FINALLY!!! A decent Thai place in the Poway area! Good, good Thai food. We tried the spicy eggplant dish and one of the glass noodle dishes. The spicy eggplant was superb, one of the best of that sort ever tasted. The noodle dish was good too, if not our favorite. We regretted not eating the drunken noodles or Pad Thai even if those are a bit cliche. The lunch specials come with rice (even the noodle dish!) and soup or salad. My husband went for the soup and I went for the salad. I was even impressed by the salad at this place. It was very small, but they went to the trouble of adding peanuts, a wonderful coconut, peanut dressing, bean sprouts and even tofu. Quite a bit better than the usual ordinary side salad. The soup was quite good (Tom yum) if a bit on the fishy side due to a liberal use of fish sauce. I like that flavor so enjoyed it. In fact, the only real negative about the food from this place is that they had a rather heavy hand with the fish sauce. The food was a bit too salty for my taste (although mixed with the rice it was fine). It was so full of flavor though that I didn't mind. Spicy here ( I didn't dare the extra spicy option) is perfectly edible and even a bit tame by my standards. When I finished eating, my lips had a pleasant tingle to them but weren't burning. It all depends on your standards though as my husband stopped eating my dish after a few bites. This is a trick I've learned over the years when I want to save the good stuff for myself. Stopped in @ 8:40. Was greeted rudely, after requesting dinner for four was told "we are about to close, you can do take out". The restaurant doesn't close until 9:00pm. This is the second time we have been turned away from this restaurant. The first time we went there around 4:30pm, instead of saying we don't open until 5pm, or sorry we are not open yet, we were told "we are closed"!! This is my favorite Thai place in town. My boyfriend and I are regulars here and the servers who work here always get really excited when we come in ("HIIII!!! Welcome! Welcome. Sit down, sit down. Is here okay? Why We No See You Long Time??!). This place is a step up from casual and the prices reflect that. I always order the Tom Yum soup and my boyfriend orders Tom Kha. We share the fresh spring rolls with shrimp and a side of peanut sauce. My boyfriend and I have eaten at a lot of Thai places in North County, but this one is our go-to. The pineapple fried rice is really beautiful and is served in actual pineapple shell. A+ for presentation on that entree. My boyfriend's favorite is the Panang Curry. Lately I've been mixing it up and trying different things on their menu. The service here is excellent and it is nice to treat yourself to a step up from casual dining. When we order one appetizer, 2 cups of soup, two entrées, w 2 drinks the bill comes out to be about $45, without tip. My ultimate favorite Thai restaurant. Found Takhrai by accident when during covid I got an uber eats delivery. I had ordered from my usual Thai place and that night I noticed the food was better than it had ever been. Later I noticed the driver took it upon himself to go to another Thai place. I've been having delivery every week since. Their curries are hands down the best I've ever had and I eat a lot of curry. My husband loves Thai food. After attending mass on a Sunday evening he had a craving. We wanted to try a new spot. Our usual spots are Siam Nara, Pattaya and Sab E Lee. Now if you've been to those places you know how good their food is. Pretty hard to beat. We yelped and found Takhrai Thai was just close by to our church. So we decided to give it a try and add it to our list of places we've eaten at. The location is easy to find. Plenty of parking available. We were seated right away, there wasn't too many people there at the time. The staff was really nice. I wish I caught her name, but there was a lady that reminded me of our mothers. The typical Asian moms that are so welcoming and always feeding you and making sure you were fully satisfied. She was such a sweet lady. Now the menu was similar to most Thai restaurants we've gone to. Prices are decent as well. So we ordered the calamari- it was ok, just heavily breaded than the usual calamari we order. The drunken noodles were really good. I'm not a huge fan of bean sprouts, this dish had almost as much bean sprouts as it did noodles lol. And lastly we ordered the traditional yellow curry, I can't say anything bad about it. It was yummy! Especially with a medium spice level. We would definitely come back. Okay so I've been back to Takhrai Thai a couple more times and the food keeps on getting better! I tried their Garlic and Pepper Chicken Wings, Appetizer Sampler and the Rib-eye Steak Larb. The Garlic Pepper wings were very soft and tasty. Not to Garlicky, just the way I like it. Their sampler had Golden Triangles which are stuffed deep fried pastries filled with meat and veggies, I really enjoyed this. The sampler also had these deep fried shrimp that was wrapped around crunchy noodles. Dip these bad boys in the sweet and sour sauce and you're golden!! And finally, the Rib-eye Steak Larb.... man oh man, this was pretty darn tasty! I like citrus flavored dishes and this one hit the spot! Next time I'm gonna try the regular Larb dish, which is Chicken not beef. read more

Update: Tried Takhrai again and I'm so glad I did. Portions and quality were terrific. They are back to being my go to Thai.

I've been coming here for quite sometime and in my opinion, they have the best Thai food in the area. I typically order their tofu dishes now that I'm vegetarian, but their meat dishes are also pretty bomb (before I went vegetarian). There was one time where Uber eats kinda messed up my meal and I called and spoke to the manager and he was very empathetic and offered to remake my meal. That's great customer service! Don't come here didn't have any organization Horrible service, ordered food over the phone told me 45min food will be ready called it in @ 6:15pm went tot he location at 7:10pm food was not even ready yet. They told me 5min 5min... food came out 7:45pm what!!!!!!! If the kitchen handle it maybe tell the customer longer time or talk to the kitchen??? Very unacceptable service. Decided to update to 3 stars because I work in the food industry and I know how a Yelp review can make or break a business and I wouldn't want to be privy to that. Both dishes were good but as I mentioned before not knowing the ingredients or how it was prepared makes it difficult to give 5 stars especially since the soup, I believe was Tom Kah looked and tasted more like Pho and had tofu in it which wasn't listed ;( I really appreciated the owners follow up regarding my recent post and were hoping I'd come back but 2x is enough for me. I came on 11/7 & 11/14 around 1 PM and although the server was friendly she seemed to be more interested in preparing for the dinner shift I would definitely recommend listing ingredients on the lunch menu for those with allergies. read more

Three star review - now five star. The food at Takhrai Thai has always been excellent, however the customer service - not so much. Let's just say it used to be "Basil Fawlty" standard, rudeness, lack of attentiveness, and discourtesy was pretty much expected. However that has all changed in the last year, or so, the standard has improved immensely to the extent that I would not only wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for serving the best Thai food within at least a 10 mile radius, but also commend them for their excellent customer service. read more

My recommendation: Choo-chi duck with extra sauce I came here with my girlfriend about two weeks ago because we were in search of a place to eat at for the AMEX small business saturday promotion. I didn't come expecting much because Thai food isn't really this area's specialty. I was pretty wrong. Takhrai thai is amazing. The restaurant is clean, cozy, and the service was fantastic! I came here on a whim with a friend and we decided to try their lunch specials. There is a special lunch menu that is separate from their everyday menu. Everything on the lunch menu was fairly priced and a pretty good deal. Most items were under $10 and comes with either soup of the day or salad. I ordered the soup of the day (which was Tom yum) and pad see ew noodles with beef. Both items came in lunch portions but were very filling. When you check in on yelp there is a 15% off your order coupon. Since it was my first time there, the manager made an exception and allowed us to use the offer which was extremely nice of him! But as an FYI he said that for next time the offer is good toward their regular menu. If I'm in the area and craving Thai I would definitely come back, the food and service were great! read more

I moved to San Diego over the weekend so I can only compare this place to what I've enjoyed back in Northern California. Decor and atmosphere are very nice, a little bit dim but I enjoyed that. As you walk in there are statues of an elephant and a goddess which added a lovely touch to my first impression. I ordered the Thai basil chicken in hot which came with steamed rice and a choice of soup or salad of the day. I chose the soup which had tofu, green onion, and a hint of coconut. Very delicate on the taste buds and very light on the stomach. As for my Thai basil chicken, I expected hot to spicy as it was the second highest level of spicy but I didn't taste any spice at all. I do love spicy food though so maybe my taste buds didn't think their spices were strong enough. Overall decent Thai restaurant, would I come back again? Had been a customer of Takhrai Thai for the past 2.5 years and placed a carryout order on 3/2/2020 for just over $40 of food. I left the tip and total blank as I often do for carryout (my fault and won't do it again). While reconciling bank statements today, I noticed they filled in a $7+ tip for themselves. Gave them a chance to explain over the phone and the guy on the other end of the line tried to blame it on "the machine." Had the tom kha soup with chicken and the drunken noodles with beef (4 spicy). Tom kha soup was generous with chicken and mushrooms. Soup was sweet and a little citricy bit delicious. Drunken noodles was really oily but sauce was savory. Noodles had good texture and beef was flavorful. Veggies were a bit on the soft side. Overall, it was okay to good. My family has been coming here over the past 2 years. Decently priced and generous servings. The service here is so good. We came here an hour before closing, yet they were still welcoming. My family has fallen in love with this place. My dad weekly asks me to order the Island Surprise and bring it to him when I visit. I can say I enjoy the food hear whole heartedly. From the garlic pepper chicken wings (very tasty sauce) to their delicious tiger cry (marinated spiced grilled beef) to their simple drunkennoodle. I haven't had any complaints. The service is good. Something wrong with this place. I ordered it to go through Uber Eats and was the worst thai I have ever had in my life. In fact, it was inedible and I had to throw it away up on the first bite. Ordered had pad woon sen and fried spring rolls. Something was rancid- Probably the oil because the egg rolls did not taste right either. The Pad Woon Sen noodle dish was filled with bean sprouts, carrots and other ingredients that typically don't go in that dish and had zero flavor. It was so strange... I've never had that before from a Thai restaurant. Usually flavors Fluctuate restaurant by restaurant depending upon the type of fish stock used, chef style,amount of soy, ginger Etc... but in this case there was just no flavor and there was an aftertaste of something spoiled. read more

This place has a really good lunch deal where everything is less than $10 if you order the standard meats with it. I really like their drunken noodles and padseeiw the best. The lunch deals also comes with a small soup or salad! This place gets packed during lunch time so service gets understandably slow. This place used to be my favorite place but it is going downhill. While I was there 1 table of people walked out because of lack of attention, 2 people who were trying to order take out and waited 20 left too (I don't think the waitress even noticed) and one other person got mad because of the rude waitress while he was trying to pick up and just asked how much longer it will be. For me? Long wait to order, when I finally ordered I got treated badly. I was ready to walk out but had paid already. Wait was 4O minutes. They were clearly struggling tonight. While I would ordinarily avoid any restaurant rated less than 4 stars, this place is close to my home. I was seated prompty, my order was taken immediately and pad thai noodles were served in minutes. While I have had pad thai noodles many times, these were among the best.
