Honestly thought I was gonna like this place, the food is good but the vibes were just not it. I didn't realize that an horchata is not a free refill , only soft drinks are , that was not something they said when asking for a refill. So I didn't expect to see it on the bill, the server got it taken off thankfully. He did explain its Because it's not a regular drink. But the point is being more transparent with your guest , I didn't get her name but after he came back with the bill a lady approached us and said the exact same thing to me after he just explained it to me again , so I told her what I told him this is something you should let your guest know , I've never been to a restaurant that charges 8$ for a small glass of horchata and charge for a refill no matter if it's from a machine. Then the lady said well we don't talk about the price to our guest because they are usually REGULARS! I told her that's not very welcoming for new guest. It's not even in the menu! At first we thought we'd leave since nearly the entire restaurant was gearing up for two large parties...but glad we did stay...bec Humberto V, the owner greeted us so warmly, and he encouraged us to enjou the main dinjng room Christmas tree and all the art before seating us near the bar....the paintings in this room are interesting too and the room seats a handful of tables, a more intimate setting. I wanted my mom to see this beautiful restaurant even more so due to the Christmas tree decorated with anngek sculptures and religious icons...and poinsettias tastefully and artfully arranged.. so we did ...and then the business of ordering and eating. Humbert checked in on us, and sat down to chat about why life was beautiful.....it was a charming conversation and my mom was delighted and charmed by this unexpected friendly hospitality. The gratis chips arrived swiftly, even though the staff was prepping for the huge office party with their buffet in the main dining room, another party soon to arrive in another separate room with its own festive holiday tree. We were privy to watch the staff working hard, and also happy we were ignored. Our waters came right away, the owner even poured from a small carafe left on our table. Our food was hot on a very hot plate. Generous portions. I had the chile relleno, just as I remembered it, very fluffy and yummy. Mom had the chicken enchilada, and gave a big thumbs up after her first bite. Once the guests arrived for the huge office party, we saw margaritas and beers flying out from the bar. The two bartenders were amazingly fast. Even so, we were able to secure to go boxes and the check easily. Humberto was so sweet to bring us complimentary desserts...it was mango sorbet and marscapone cake with a rosette of whipped cream. Also the sauce tasted like passion fruit and maybe pomegranate puree...don't really know but it was muy delicioso!! It was amazing to have such attention from the owner and staff when they were clearly soooooo busy. But I've had amazing attentive old world service here before, so that's how they roll. This place is such a GEM. It's so beautiful, clean, the food is always fresh and taste great. You are also able to throw events, plenty of space. We always ask for Blanca, she's so relatable and welcoming when she sees us, great server! There's also plenty of valet parking for $7, not as expensive as DTLA, Santa Monica, etc.... valet parking. Service here is 5 stars!! The artwork that is inside the dinning area is beautiful. Came here last week to meet a client and the food here was terrific. I got the steak burrito and it came with a side of rice and beans. Inside the burrito was steak with bell peppers and caramelized onions. It was like steak fajitas filling in a burrito. Had the funeral reception for my mother there it's a little pricey, but the service was excellent. The food was good. The only thing I didn't like is they charged valets parking for everyone that we invited and myself included that should've been covered in their price, but overall the place was nice and definitely would recommend it for special occasions read more

I have been here many times. The restaurant is nicely decorated (many paintings on the walls) and service is good. They also have a bar section. Portions of food are huge enough that you can eat it for two meals, They start off by giving you chips and sauce as you place your order and wait for the food. Chips are so good that you can't stop eating. Make sure you don't eat too much chips or you'll be too full before your meal arrives. I had gotten the Pollo Yucatán and Crabmeat Enchiladas on two separate occasions. They were good. Salad had gotten really expensive here so it's better to just choose a meat. read more

Great service! Sour, acidic red salsa. When I spoke to the waiter he said that the chef said it was freshly made! The roasted salsa is great! I've been coming to this plate for quite some time now since it is so close to work and it's our go to spot for a quick lunch and celebration. The food here is spot-on for good Mexican dishes that are made right, and made fresh at the time of ordering (of course there are things that are prepared a bit earlier). You will find that the prices are higher than regular less fancy/pricey places but you pay a bit more here per dish on average compared to your $ or $$ spots because this is a sit-down place with a nice ambience (high ceilings, some wall art, a sports bar side with big screen TVs, good attentive attendants, and valet for your parking needs). --FOOD-- Food here is delicious and made fresh to order. If you come in a group, they bring it all out at the same time. - you get unlimited freshly fried free chips and salsa roja (mild), and salsa verde (darker salsa is spicier!) - I love their Ceviche - it's a smaller portion than some other places but it's delicious - their combo plates with options of 1, 2, 3 items are always good if you want a little of something here and there, and all come with rice and beans +/- a bit of sour cream and guac -- I love their chille relleno, and chicken flautas -- deliciously crunchy and fresh - MOLE Poblano!!! It was my first time at Tamayo restaurant. I was with a large group. The first thing I noticed were the beautiful paintings on the wall. The second thing I noticed was Humberto, the owner, greeting everyone in the restaurant. This quality is rarely seen anymore. What you typically see are servers trying to turn tables. We checked other places for ambiance, service and quality and in our opinion this is the best. It is also the most beautiful Mexican restaurant I have been to in California. I actually cannot think of a better one. We met with Felipe the manager. He arranged everything. I told him I wanted it to run smooth and he made sure it did. From arranging huevos for a vegan, skinny margaritas to calling up the florist to get the flowers delivered asap. The waiters at Tamayo were attentive and made sure everyone was attended to. It went smooth without a hick up. From the bar to the the mariachis to the parking. Everything was perfect. I would recommend Tamayo for lunch or a special event. read more

This restaurant holds sentimental value- had my wedding reception in 2004 here. We returned today and took our two girls. The service here is top notch and waiters and owners are super hospitable. A definite must try in East LA Food The food was really good! Soooo good I didn't take any pictures (I know bad yelper) but it was really good. I had the 3 item combination and it was fresh and delicious. My daughter had the fajita plate that was brought to our table (sizzling ofc). My youngest had the bean and cheese burrito and we were able to add fries to her plate (she is 8 so fries it was). Drinks You must try the mango margarita! Perfectly mixed and refreshing for such a warm day (it's august) Ambience If you want to appreciate art and just a hacienda style Mexican ambience you have to go here. They have art all over the walls. I uploaded some pictures of what I saw. I should start off with praising Humberto and his fine staff for exceptional service. If there was a higher rating, this place would get it. Today, we had Enchiladas de Carnitas, and Halibut Fish Tacos. My goodness, the Carnitas were over the top and the best we have had in So Cal-and that is saying a lot. First off, the Spanish Rice is fluffy and well seasoned. The Refried Beans are to behold as they are not your typical Refritos. The Halibut starts as a grilled Fillet, worthy of a main course, and the double corn tortillas are loaded, and are really too big to hold onto. Best to take some of the fish out, separate the tortillas, and make two tacos of the one. Really is enough to make 4 tacos from the two and share with family of friends. Served with a generous serving of fresh Guacamole and Pica de Gallo. I'm sorry they are not open for dinner or on weekends. read more

My work loves this restaurant but every time I've gone it's been a worse and worse experience. Yesterday we had a near fixed menu, after getting there at 11 we're weren't served until roughly 12:30. The food was cold, the rice and beans were awful, the service was near nonexistent and we had to dispute a charge FOR NAPKINS. I ate less than half the plate and I'm suffering from food poisoning. I don't know if it was the carnitas or if this place is just dirty. read more

I stopped in for lunch with a colleague while we were conducting some business nearby. Tamayo came highly recommended by our business associates, so we decided to give it a try. We were immediately greeted by the hostess and seated in the beautiful and expansive dining room with chips and three salsas immediately placed on our table. Our server, Francisco, was very attentive and never kept us waiting. We both enjoyed of our meals. I opted for the Enchiladas de Carnitas. The pork was very flavorful, and so was the sauce. I highly recommend that menu item. My associate had the Enchiladas de Mole Poblano, which she enjoyed although it did not look very appetizing to me. The restaurant is housed inside a beautiful historic building. The dining room is very large and very beautiful and is clearly a favorite lunch spot. Tamayo also offers a private parking lot complete with valet, which is always a nice option. Unfortunately, the valet left a dirty mess on the floor mat of my car, so minus one star. read more

I am so disappointed in the service and the professionalism I received from the owner himself Humberto. We planned a retirement party months in advance, I went in to discuss the details with Humberto, he stated that all prices were listed on the Tamayo website, which reflected $29.95 per person at the time deposit was given. Humberto stated not to worry about any details at the time and to return a month prior to my event to make the final decisions. Which I did... he informed me and my colleague who was helping plan the event that the prices had now changed from $29.95 to $36.95 per person plus tax and 20% gratuity. I explained that we based our budget accordingly to the prices on the website as he had instructed. He refused to honor his word but he stated he would wave the $250 cleaning fee. He also stated that the cakes would be cut by the waiters and we would not have to worry about that. We had no choice but to accept those prices since plans and invitations had already gone out for this venue. The day of the event we were presented with our bill for the balance due, he charged both the balance due plus the cleaning fee he repeatedly stated would be waved. He rudely told me that we could not start the event until final payment was made in full. I reminded him of what we had discussed regarding the cleaning fee and still made us pay the fee before we could start our event, he went back on his word. Towards the end our event when deserts were to be served, I asked one of the servers about cutting the cakes as agreed. She stated that Humberto had instructed staff to not cut or help with the cakes. We had to ask several times for forks and cake plates, we made due and cut and served our cakes without their assistance. I am beyond disappointed with Tamayos and the owner himself. His unprofessionalism and lack of integrity could have ruined our retirement event, thankfully colleagues stepped up and assisted where needed. Caution, if you need a microphone be prepared to pay $35 plus tax, make sure it has fresh batteries so it doesn't die in the middle of an important speech as it did with us. read more

The black salsa here is the best salsa I ever had in my life. I wish I could come in on a weekend but ever since their hours changed it makes it hard to come back during the week. We had the cheese enchiladas, shrimp ceviche and the best thing on the menus is Acapulco chop chop salad. The textures the flavors it hits every single aspect of making an amazing dish.
