Ever since this restaurant changed ownership 5 years ago, it's been a slide downhill. The 80's decor remodel with purple neon trim lighting doesn't cover up the terrible service and declining food quality. We ordered dim sum for lunch to-go. It's a bad start when I have to argue with the waiter with a diamond stud in his left earlobe to get more hot mustard sauce. Then his coworker tries to offer soy sauce and chili sauce as an alternative. It's foolish to argue about $1.50 worth of hot mustard sauce, threaten to charge me extra for the mustard sauce, all the while I'm actively paying for $60 worth of a variety of dim sum. This place has a bad sense of customer service. They act like there aren't 10 other dim sum restaurants with a 3 mile radius of where I'm standing. The regular dim sum hargow and shu mai are standard, nothing stands out to make them special. It's definitely not as good as 6 years ago with the original owners. The steamed egg yolk buns used to be the only thing that made them better and above all of the other dim sum restaurants. This time, the egg yolk filling of the bun was dry and chalky. Now there is absolutely no reason for us to continue going to Tan kim su. This was the last straw. I wouldn't even go to a wedding at this place because the food was inedible. My go-to dim sum place for over a decade now. They remodeled so the place is a lot nicer. I will say, it's way less busy than before. It used to be super busy and packed with a decently long wait time. The recent times I've went, I was seated down right away or very short wait time. Some of the reviews say that the place being empty is a red flag, it's not (in my opinion), same thing with being seated right away being a red flag (weird). I love being seated ASAP and it doesn't bother me the amount of people around. If anything, it was great that we got to the food immediately and all the ladies with the carts all came so I got most of the dishes right off the bat. As a large group, we are used to waiting but there was no wait. (first red flag) Since there was not a lot of people eating, the food was not being served as quickly and therefore was cold. I'm a fan of their dim sum - but just not all of their items are great. I usually go to Seafood Cove 2 but noticed the quality of service and food is really inconsistent. The comparable difference between this place and Seafood Cover 2 is their siu mai is better here (which is my favorite). Oddly enough, their egg tarts were really good here also. I'm not a fan of their water - not sure if their system is a bit outdated but their water tasted off. I would recommend bringing your own water or opt for a soda. read more

Dim sum is horrible. Shrimp har gow is filled with a shrimp paste and filler concoction thats rubbery with a slight sweetness that's off. The shumai, also rubbery, had an aftertaste of spoiled meat. In fact, all their dishes tasted like the meat was sitting on the counter a little too long prior to cooking. Or perhaps they buy discounted product. The fried crab/shrimp claws were stale and greasy. The congee and pork spareribs were decent. Although there was no wait for a Saturday brunch, it's not worth it. At $6 min per dish, Id prefer frozen dim sum from Trader Joes. My stomach says stay away. read more

After hopping 4 different neighboring dim sum places on a Sunday morning... this had the shortest wait. I forgot how cracking dim sum places are on Sunday mornings. Shu mai, shrimp balls with sugar cane stick, chicken feet, steamed rice rolls with shrimp, pork buns, fried wontons, honey walnut shrimp, different kinds of soup/stew (the tripe one especially). They blanch their Chinese broccoli at a station next to the tables, so it's served hot and fresh and drizzled with oyster sauce. Great tasting food, very reasonably priced starting at $3.50 to $6.50. My husband and I decided to give this spot another try after the recent remodel but the food is still subpar. The restaurant looks cleaner and nicer now ! The dim sum dishes were cold even though it was out of the carts and it lacked flavor like the ones from seafood cove or even dim sum co. I remember sitting at the back of my parents workplace and munching on shumai from this place and being so happy, it's a fond memory of mine that I'll never forget. I should preface this by saying that 99% of the times I go here is takeout... now I've been here countless times and have eaten nearly everything on this menu, but my memory fails me to detail ever single item; however, my go to nowadays are the Kung Pao Chicken, Walnut shrimp, and their Hot Dessert(Don't sleep on this, it's so creamy and delicious). I should also add my brother frequently gets the special fried rice, which is not a bad choice either. -Foods decent but a bit on the oily side so be warned. -Decor is a definitely outdated with an oriental feel so don't be expecting a sleek modern dining experience. -Service has never been something to complain about but I don't dine-in here that much. Went in for dim sum after the remodel. Nice decor. Was hesitant after reading some of the reviews but a few of the regular workers were there and the food was maybe even better than before. I think we got lucky as a new fresh set of har gow etc had come out. We had the crab balls which were larger than before. The price was 40 per person but we ate a lot. I will be going back. Other than on the dim sum carts, you can also order food from the kitchen, like walnut shrimp or seafood noodles. My favorites usually consist of: shui mai, tripe, pork spareribs, fried seaweed shrimp, chicken feet, walnut shrimp, and the taro cake. All solid choices and more flavorful than other places. My mom and late father used to get dim sum at Kim Su until he passed away. Back then the roving carts dished out fresh food and it was to satisfaction. Mom suggested we go back and since it was my first time, I was surprised to see a fresh remodel of the restaurant, but that's where the freshness apparently ended. We arrived within a half hour of opening for lunch and were served promptly. The entrees weren't freshly made as the texture was off. The pork buns appeared to have been reheated, among other items including the shu mai, which didn't taste to expectation, for what mom remembered. The service has been good to us, they recognize us and greet us like family. It hasn't already been like that, they are a typical Asian restaurant so as the stereotypes go, rushed service with brief customer service. The clams were good but since there is so much starch, it got really gooey when they cooled down. We were really appreciative that they fully cut the Chinese broccoli (which isn't always the case with that veggie). The soup was good but the chili sauce definitely kicked it up a notch.
