My mom and late father used to get dim sum at Kim Su until he passed away. Back then the roving carts dished out fresh food and it was to satisfaction. Mom suggested we go back and since it was my first time, I was surprised to see a fresh remodel of the restaurant, but that's where the freshness apparently ended. We arrived within a half hour of opening for lunch and were served promptly. The entrees weren't freshly made as the texture was off. The pork buns appeared to have been reheated, among other items including the shu mai, which didn't taste to expectation, for what mom remembered. The restaurant was empty and the customers weren't flowing in, which was a good indicator as to how the food would turn out; other dim sum restaurants along Bolsa Ave. are crowded from open to close, but this place didn't even have six tables occupied in such a large space. read more

Came here for some lobster and left satisfied. We ordered 4 pound lobster and it was $31/lb. It was seasoned well, can't go wrong with house lobster. We came in the afternoon so they also had dim sum carts going around. It was as expected, good enough to satisfy the cravings. There was no waiting but parking can be limited. This has been a family destination for dim sum since I was less than 10 years old. My family and I come here often for commemorate each other. The service has been good to us, they recognize us and greet us like family. It hasn't already been like that, they are a typical Asian restaurant so as the stereotypes go, rushed service with brief customer service. If you don't care to be treated as such then I highly recommend Kim Su! Pricing is averaged about 3.75 to 7 bucks depending on what items your selecting. There is a menu for a la cart items. The clams were good but since there is so much starch, it got really gooey when they cooled down. We were really appreciative that they fully cut the Chinese broccoli (which isn't always the case with that veggie). The soup was good but the chili sauce definitely kicked it up a notch. The place looks busy for sure but we didn't need to wait too long. Food was ehhh to me, not tasty. Cart ladies didn't fully go their rounds so we kept getting the same carts coming thru. Kim Su is a shadow of what it once was, unfortunately. I went here with my family, for years, growing up. The waiting lines used to surround the building, and parking used to be very hard to find. I moved 5 years ago, but always get Dim Sum regularly on my visits back home. This restaurant is still delicious. I very much enjoy the older generation of workers still pushing carts and bussing tables. They do a great job, and it's always an enjoyable experience when coming here. The thing that gets me is the quality of the food. I feel like it has gone down pretty noticeably over the years. I'm not sure if my taste buds have changed, but I have talked to my parents and they agree with my opinion. I still enjoy the Xiu-Mai, Ha Cao, pork-ribs, chicken feet, and banh uot Tom. The quality of the Egg tarts has severely gone down. I still recommend this place to eat, but if you're looking for higher quality Dim Sum, Seafood Cove #2 is the place to go. read more

Came here for dim sum with my family and it was absolutely jam packed!! We wanted to go to a place for dim sum where they pushed around carts and we could see what they had to offer. We got the classics har gow, shui mai, shrimp rice rolls, etc. The dim sum here overall is good. I've definitely had better and also worse so this falls right into the "good" category. I mention this because we came back again just a few days ago because it's nice to have a go to place for dim sum in the area. This time, the wait was not as crazy (since I think everyone was over at Phuoc Loc Tho) so we were quickly seated. We've been coming here forever...since the early 1990's this was our spot for Dim Sum and Chinese food. It was always consistently good...which pains me to have to write this review. The last few times I've come here this year the service has been AWFUL. The food quality has also severely dropped off as of today's visit. I will probably never come here again. I remember this place used to be so good! But not anymore... Recently I came with some friends after a morning hike. We didn't have to wait, but parking was very limited. We ordered a variety of the usual items for dim sum. I did not like the steamed rice rolls here, either with shrimp or beef. We got both and the dough for the steamed rice roll was not good. It had a sour aftertaste. also, each roll had only 1 shrimp, versus 2-3 big shrimp per roll like other places. The Har Gow was pretty small and dry. Worst Chinese food ever, service was horrible as only one waiter. The restaurant decor was very nice and bright and newly renovated. We ordered sweet and sour chicken which the chicken was way overcooked and dry. We also order beef chow fun which was ok, beef chow neon with Hong Kong crispy noodles which was horrible, honey walnut shrimp in which the walnuts were rancid and old which ruined the dish, orange chicken which was burnt and bitter. We never would have stopped here, had we not been with my friend. It was supposed to be a "light breakfast" to start our last day of beer, food, beer, and food. This is my friend's favorite mom-and-pop shop, and he was excited to have us give it a try. It was just after 10:30 am on a Sunday morning when we arrived. There were a few groups of people hanging out in front of the restaurant, but we were shown to a table right away. The dining room was surprisingly packed. Again, it wasn't even 11 am, but they were almost full of families and groups getting their grind on. It was impressive. My husband and I basically just sat back and let my friend order things for us to consume. It's always fun when I get to hear him speaking Vietnamese, and his dual-fluency was on full display the entire weekend. They brought us this wonderfully strong and flavorful house tea, and before we knew it, our little table was piled high with dishes pulled from the carts. I do know we got two different types of dumplings - one pork shumai, two shrimp something. He also got Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, spicy pork, crab balls on sugar cane, shrimp in rice noodles, the absolute best fried tofu ever, baked siopao...and chicken feet. THIS was our "light breakfast". I did try the chicken feet - it was a weekend of exploration, after all. They weren't as gnarly as I'd expected them to be - it was like eating chicken skin (if you could block the sight of the toes wiggling in your face); the sauce had a subtle sweet flavor, as well. Everything was hot and fresh, with really good flavors. The tofu was the star of the meal for sure - it was nuclear hot, but perfectly crispy and bursting with flavor. The shrimp in rice paper was difficult for us mere mortals to eat with the plastic chopsticks, but I didn't mind having everything slipping and splashing all over the place. Even though we were stuffed from our light breakfast, my friend insisted on ordering some of the sweet tofu for us to try. The gentleman in the front was helping a guest in front of us and ran to the back, meanwhile an old man cut in front and was assisted right away. Kim Su is my husband and his father's go to place for dimsum and their favorite lobster in house special sauce. With my father in law in town visiting us, he requested to have his first dinner back in OC here at Kim Su. We haven't been to Kim Su in a long time so we were surprised to see that the name of the restaurant slightly changed and that the place has good through renovations. We conclude from these observations that the place is under new management. So we were a bit nervous that the food and service would not be the same. There were no other customer when we arrived so their servers attention were all on us. We got our order right away. Not all the food arrived at the same time, with the lobster being the last to arrive, but they all arrived within a few minutes of each other. Unfortunately, the quality of their dishes was not as good as we expected and had experienced before. Their shaken beef wasn't as good as we remembered, the lobster in house special sauce and pork chop were just ok, but the stir fry seafood was good. One of our servers was an OG server from old management and my husband and father in law remembered him, and I think he did remember them too so he gave us a really good service experience. They were attentive to our needs, from extra plates, to water refill, to giving us their free desserts at the end. The renovation of the restaurant also made it brighter and cleaner, so that's nice. Overall, we still like this place, but hopefully they do not lose the quality of the original Kim Su despite the new management/owners. read more

Ordered some takeout for lunch over the weekend! - The house special lobster (tom hum Kim Su dac biet) with noodles is still on point. Lots of scallions and aromatics to bring out the flavor. The lobster was cooked well where the texture wasn't too chewy. The noodles were al dente and also nicely seasoned. 5/5 - The salt and pepper shrimp (tom rang muoi) was decent. It was lightly floured on the outside making it crispy and the inside shrimp meat was still soft and juicy. I enjoyed the scallions and jalapeños, but the jalapeños weren't spicy this time around. 4/5 - The spicy clams with basil (ngheu xao la quay cay) were tasty. The sauce was very good! It was a mix of savory and spicy which went well for a seafood dish. However, we did have a few clams that didn't open up so that was unfortunate. 4/5 - The pea sprout vegetable dish (dot dau hoa lan xao toi) was stir fried with garlic. It was a little bland and was probably my least favorite dish. I love pea sprouts, but this dish was slightly over cooked so the vegetables were mushy. 3/5 I also got some dim sum and egg tarts to go. They were decent. We were robbed, blindsided whatever you wanna call it. Got there super early for graduation celebrations with my family. We were a big party and usually when it's a big party gratuity is included, but we were charged almost $600 for for 15 people, I ordered for both tables at the main table with the adults and they stamped two tickets for everything we ordered so they definitely charged us twice. When we tried to dispute it they called us crazy and demanded we pay for everything. They scammed us, the restaurant was empty and that should've been the first red flag, clearly the new owners have lost their mind. Staff is always rude, and the lady's always try to upsell by just handing you a tray of something. You didn't order. We've been coming here for over 15 years, trust me we know how it goes, but after so much time and us being too polite and wanting to respect the space, I'm done making excuses. This is my favorite Dim Sum restaurant, and I've tried a lot of them! All the usual dim sum fare: Sieu mai (pork dumplings), char sieu bao (barbecue pork buns), ha cao (shrimp ball dumplings), honey walnut shrimp, etc. And a lot of more exotic offerings as well, all brought to your table on carts. Except it tastes better here than just about anywhere else, and it's very reasonably priced. The other thing they really do well here is lobster. No joke, I like the lobster here better than any of the big name seafood restaurants. Better tasting and less expensive. I also love the old-school Chinese (and Cambodian, as there's a huge picture of Angkor Wat on the wall) restaurant vibe. Big round tables for family meals. A very large dinner menu selection. Super efficient servers. You'll find me here on weekends a couple times every month, probably for the foreseeable future. I don't see another dim sum place replacing it anytime soon! read more
