The girl who took my order suspiciously went on break & didn't return during all that time. Went up to the cashier & talked to another girl who said they couldn't find my order. She offered me a free cookie so I took it. The whole time we sat there in front of the counter & no one wanted to ask us about our order? Genuinely terrible experience. Picture it, Sunday 10am, breakfast sandwich and coffee, what could go wrong? Everything, apparently. First, the fact that it was basically empty should have been indicative. Second, the guy manning the counter had an issue inputting every. Single. Item. Third, they had a staff size that doubled the number of patrons in the shop, and we waited 25 minutes for the singular breakfast sandwich and were finished eating it by the time they even thought about making our coffee. Throughout the week long trip, we visited here twice because it was a good experience. On our first visit we tried two sandwiches: one savory and the other for dessert. In the second visit, it was during dinnertime, so we ordered a heftier sandwich: the one with katsu inside. I believe we all ordered the one with pork. One of my relatives ordered the one that was marked as spicy, and it came with a curry dipping sauce. Out of three sandwiches, my favorite was the egg salad sandwich. Included in the layers, what I thought was lettuce was a different type of leaf. I don't know what it is, but it had a refreshing spicy mint flavor to it. It refreshened and had a subtle peppery taste to it that cut out the creaminess fatigue that I sometimes get from eating egg salads. The sandwiches are huge, but with the thin layer of that mysteriously delicious leaf, I ate the half sandwich without feeling bloated (I shared the other half with my relative). Since we were light on our stomachs we were able to eat the fruit sandwich dessert too. The fruit sandwich was delicious as well. I would praise the light sweetness of the cream stuffed between and securing the strawberry. The strawberries were sweet and also soft to eat (didn't crunch like the unripe ones). It was good, but I think the star of the lunch meal that day was the egg salad sandwich for me. (I can still think back to it to this day). Part 2, fast-forwarding to one of the dinner nights. We were nearby the restaurant, so we decided to eat here. We were all pretty hungry, so we ordered the heaviest filling we could think of (and something new from the one we had during lunch): the pork katsu sandwich. My relative picked the one that was spicier. The pork was juicy and thick and I cabbage ratio was just right. The one that was spicy came with a curry dipping sauce. That my relative became joyful because they love curry. Me, someone with low spice tolerance, thought this had a strong kick; the more I eat it the spicier it becomes rather than me getting used to its spiciness. The matcha watermelon was perfect for the summer, my friends got the Ube matcha and they all felt it needed some sweetness to it, like the watermelon. I want to like this place because the food is good when they get it right, but it's about 50/50. I usually order the Karaage Nuggets, but have been given the Katsu style on more than one occasion, only 8 pieces rather than the 10 I ordered, given "10" nuggets that were super tiny in comparison to other orders I've made. I suspect they cut a couple in half because they didn't want to prep more given it was near the end of their day. I've put in an order with 20min before I pick it up, only for them to take another 20min once I've come in and ask for it. Straightforward sando menu with an impressive selection of pastries on display. The selection at Tanaka did not disappoint and as someone who was visiting Portland, I will confess I definitely had to try everything I wanted to here. We ordered a fish katsu sando, egg salad sando, curry bun, miso cookie, sakura latte, and one of their yuzu beers (not remembering the name really well). They do have salads, but I don't always feel like a salad. The atmosphere is clean and bright, and service was good. They have a case of delectable looking pastries if you're up for that. Was in the mood for some katsu sandos so where else to come? Tanaka is located in Downtown so parking can be tough, as it's all street parking. The interior was very clean and decor was very pretty and nice. You order your meal at the cashier, pay, and then find your seat and they will bring out the food to you. We went around 11am on a Saturday and it was relatively empty, but in about 20-30 minutes time it got packed and people were waiting for open seats. There are a few tables outside, but the main seating area is indoor. We ordered a spicy pork katsu sandwich, the chicken katsu sandwich and a side of fries. The spicy pork katsu was served with their cabbage slaw and spicy sauce. The pork was cook very well and was tender, but the spicy sauce was a bit overpowering. It wasn't too spicy, but it had hints of wasabi and it didn't really let the flavor of their sauce come through. The chicken katsu was served with their cabbage slaw and egg salad. The egg salad was a perfect compliment to the chicken and the flavors blended really well together. The fries were served with a curry aioli and it was my personal favorite dish we got. The fries were seasoned with sea salt and a when paired with the curry aioli, it stood out from the sandwiches. The strawberry yuzu limeade was a good refreshing drink for a summer day and was a good compliment to the dense sandwiches and fries we had. I was a bit taken a back that the fries were my favorite part of the meal, and that's why I would have to give this place 3 stars. We came to Tanaka because it was recommended by our local friend. We were able to catch the PSU Farmer's Market in the morning so with all the samples and small bites we picked up along the way we decided to get a smaller lunch. Tanaka was the perfect spot to evade the heat while filling up our stomachs.  Per our friend's recommendations, I ordered a Chicken Katsu Sando, and their Seasonal Sparkling Yuzuade (Strawberry flavor). My partner got the Pork Sando, and we shared a small side of Kale Slaw. Ordering is done at the counter first, then a table number is given, and you're free to sit wherever you desire. Orders are made fresh and served when ready. Our order came fairly quickly. I'm glad I got to mix and match half my sando with my partner so I got to try two different sandos. My Chicken Katsu Sando comes with the katsu, but also Yuzu egg salad, cabbage, Kewpie mayo all sandwiched between two slices of milk bread. The milk bread is toasted to a light golden brown and the first bite was pretty yummy. The chicken katsu is generous in sizing, but with the Yuzu egg salad, it's hard to say which is the spotlight ingredient. Although it's a Yuzu egg salad, the Yuzu flavor is either lacking or is overwhelmed with all the other flavors going on. I also thought that the Yuzu egg salad had more egg whites than yolks and I personally prefer a more yolk-y flavor. However, I do like the additional creamy texture it adds to the overall sando. As for the Pork Sando, surprisingly, I prefer that over the Chicken Katsu. I generally prefer a piece of chicken katsu over a pork katsu. But this Pork Sando was great. I think it's because it's more simple and the juiciness of the pork katsu actually shines a bit more than the chicken katsu did, and it's less heavy. The Pork Katsu comes with the same stuff, but no egg salad included. The Kale Slaw was okay. I would probably pass on it if I ever get the chance to come to Takana again. It's drenched in sauce and I'm not sure I really like a hint of spiciness to my salad that's supposed to be refreshing. Last, but not least, the Seasonal Sparkling Yuzuade. This was perfect, sweet, and refreshing for the hot weather today. Just what I needed.  I can't say much about service since the only interaction we got was at the counter and when our food was served, so it was very minimal. Not worth waiting for but they have a pretty good Katsu sandwich if there's no line. It's a bit pricey though, for $13-14 per sandwich with nothing else ($5 extra for fries or salad). Our sandwiches were good but we didn't really like the kale slaw - it had way too much spice. We also got a matcha strawberry latte ($7.5) which was low on actual matcha and only used strawberry syrup - I expected some actual strawberry garnish or preserve at the bottom of the cup for that price! The honey sansho latte ($7) was interesting but more in a weird way. It definitely had sansho but don't think I would ever get it again. They had pastries in the case which looked good but $5 for a cookie or $5 for an donut or curry pan is absolutely ridiculous (especially knowing the great stuff that Oyatsupan has for less) so we passed on them. Service was very mediocre. The barista who delivered our drinks kind of plopped them on the table without saying anything. At least they don't do mandatory gratuity anymore but it's still ridiculous that they ask for 15, 18 and 20 percent as default options when you're bussing your own tables... and they don't even have proper silverware. I had already had their delicious Ube cream filled donut (which I will be coming back for again, and again). However this time I was ready to have the full experience. The setting is very *fast food style* you order, take a number and do get your food delivered but everything is very based on the honor system of cleaning up after yourself. The staff are quite busy and don't have much time to show any customer service skills and because of this they seem a bit standoffish. The Spicy Shrimp Katsu was underwhelming. The fact that Taking was used as a garnish was a strange choice and did affect the flavor as well. The bread was great, the shrimp was a good portion but the toppings were lacking any sort of extra flavor distinction and didn't really play a part in the sandwich. When I saw they had Hojicha I was looking forward to a warm cup of prepared traditional tea, however even as a in-restaurant diner the tea was also self-serve which was quite disappointing. The fries were plentiful and nice and crispbut so many it was almost the center of the meal. The most unfortunate thing for me was the Matcha cookie, I couldn't taste the matcha at all and there were too many white chocolate chips so I wouldn't have really noticed the matcha flavor anyways. The Yuzu glaze on top was also a bit overpowering and unnecessary, I will say that the crunchy outside of the cookie and the soft inside was texturally pleasing. I've wanted to try Tanaka for a long time ever since I've heard about their downtown spot. So I couldn't wait to try this one closer to me. The interior is so bright and vibrant, it was so inviting. Although it was busy, the service was prompt and quick. We each got a Tanaka Combo which comes with a choice of katsu sando, side, and drink. We also got a few donuts and cookie to try. The combo was quite expensive, it was about $20 per combo. My Spicy Chicken Katsu Sando was alright. The spice was too overpowering, I couldn't taste anything else. There was also not enough katsu sauce in the sando. The best sando was the Spicy Fish Katsu Sando. It didn't have the overpowering spice flavor, so it was much more enjoyable to eat. As for the side, we got the Miso Caesar. While I did like the milk bread croutons, the amount of parmesan cheese on the salad wasn't even. There was so much on mine and not enough on my sister's. The best thing I had was the donuts and cookie. The donuts were light and fluffy but packed a lot of flavor with the icings. The cookie had a deep miso flavor while keeping the sweetness of a traditional chocolate chip cookie. Had to update my review after trying them again today. Things have changed for the better. I heard they're opened two more locations so I decided to give them another chance. I got the yuzu donut and chicken katsu sando. The yuzu donut had no flavor of yuzu at all - it was just vanilla to be honest, so that was upsetting but the texture and flavors were amazing. I did ask them if yuzu meant the citrusy flavor and they said yes I was correct. Ugh. I don't know what's with them and the flavors they write on those labels but to be honest if they simply said vanilla it'd be more honest. The chicken in sando was amazing and juicy but the bread that's supposed to be their specialty was on a drier side (maybe they toasted it longer than needed). The sauce was too sweet for my taste - I don't understand sweet chicken, I just don't. The textures were nice. Their specialty drinks are unique, though they tend to be on the sweeter side for my taste.
