We went here for lunch today in search of the next great Thai spot and tantawan did not disappoint. Positives: -the food was great and they definitely brought the real spice. We got southern curry noodles, flaming drunken noodle at extra spicy, and Che Po. The curry noodles were good we got the flat noodles. Though my wife likes it more savory I like it more coconutty. The che po was okay, the rice was steeped in the sauce which was too much for my wife and some of the pork belly pieces were tough. The bbq pork and the duck was good though. Authentic Thai and Chinese fusion taste. The star of the show was the flaming drunken noodle. It's probably one of the best drunken noodles we've had. At extra spicy, it definitely brought the flame and the foavor in a big way. The portions and prices were great. I've been coming here for years and I don't know what's taken me so long to write a review! Tantawan Thai Kitchen is a great spot for Thai food, despite being in a plaza that is mostly comprised of Filipino businesses and restaurants. The service has always been so friendly, and the food has always been so delicious. I recently ordered catering trays from them and it was definitely more than enough food than I anticipated, but the guests were very happy about the pad see ew and the barbecue ribs that we ordered. Craving for some Thai food, we checked out Yelp and found this hidden gem! Tucked away on the quieter side of the Seafood City market area, this unsuspecting restaurant is a must try! As I write this review, we've come back 2 more times from our initial visit here. The menu for dine-in guests offer more comprehensive selection and pictures of the dishes that they offer. I forgot to take some photos of that so I posted their to-go menu instead. We tried both their pork jerky and beef jerky for our starter. The beef jerky is good, lean, but not hard. The pork jerky is slightly more chewy and definitely has more fat but a bit more flavorful. I love dipping the jerky into the sauce that they included. It's sour, a tad spicy and a hint of sweet and salty. It definitely packs the punch! The fried rice is nice and not dry, something that I sometimes worry about if they overcook it. There are about 5 pieces of good size shrimps included here. Drunken noodle is on point! We chose chicken and mild spicy level as we have kids that don't eat spicy food. They all loved it too. I added the Thai chili & fish sauce on top of mine as I like it more in the medium spicy level. We both dined-in and took to-go orders on the total of 3 times that we've been here. Went here with my favorite food critic, The Wife, at her request. We went on a Wednesday at noon and the place was empty. I mean just us except for a walk in food to-go pick up order. Huge clue. We ordered Tom Kha soup and requested it spicy. The waitress had doubts and asked us to get less space and add our own with the condiment clover. This changes the flavor. We really do like spicy. I also ordered some fried rice with crispy pork. The soup had good mushrooms for a surprise and the rice seemed like it had a crab rice flavor which would have been a better choice. The worst part of our visit was the disappointment that the menu did not include the lunch specials at a reduced price, which we only discovered when we asked for a to-go menu which had the specials printed on it. This place is great. I think the flavor is tailored to the Filipino palate. The Pad Thai is very sour, if you like that. My friend is Filipino and said it was the best pad thai she's ever had. I had the Rad Na, it was basically soup and they don't skimp on the meat! I thought it was good. If you're already at Seafood City/Island Pacific, you might as well make the trek here, it'll probably be the best Thai food you've ever had! To be honest, personally, I wasn't in love with the food (and I'm not Filipino). However, I went here twice and everyone around me was gobbling it up. It's probably a "me" problem. Not only do they have the best green & Thai tea, but their food is even better. We tried their Tom Yum Soup and Red Curry, which was extremely flavorful. Has this place gone through new ownership? I used to frequent Tantawan Thai Cuisine at least once a week -- it was my go to Thai spots because it's nearby. I would always order the Thai boat noodles, Pad Kee Mao, or Pad Thai, and they were consistently flavorful, bold, and satisfying every time. These three dishes were on constant rotation. Lately though, something feels very different. The flavor and overall taste of the dishes have noticeably changed. The Thai boat noodles no longer have that rich, deep broth, the pad kee mao isn't as smoky and punchy, and the pad thai tastes flatter and not as saucey than it used to. The food just doesn't hit the same. On top of that, the employees were clearly new. Service has been noticeably slower, and they repeatedly ask the same questions multiple times when I phone in my order. I've always mentioned that I don't want liver in my Thai boat noodles and that I like my pad thai spicy -- and before, that was never an issue or a back and forth conversation. Now, I'm asked the same clarifying questions over and over, and I'm even told that they "don't make pad thai spicy," which was never the case before. It's honestly disappointing because this used to be such a reliable weekly staple for me. I'm not sure if there's been a change in ownership, staff, or recipes, but the consistency in both food and service just isn't there anymore. Parking can be tough, as this shopping center is very busy. FOOD & DRINKS: My wife and I both ordered a Thai Iced Tea ($4) and I thought this was one of the better ones I've had recently. Not too sweet, and the price was lower than many. Off the Starter section of the menu, we ordered the Crunchy Vegetable Rolls ($11.95) and of course they came out about 30 seconds before the rest of our lunch was brought to the table. This seems to be a common issue in many Asian restaurants, appetizers and starters are brought out along with the rest of the meal, sometimes after many of the entrées are brought to the table, and this is very frustrating to me. For entrées, we ordered the BBQ Chicken & Fried Rice ($11.95) and the BBQ Ribs & Fried Rice ($11.95). Both meals were okay, not bad but nothing special either. The food arrived fast enough and packaged well enough. For food the spicy catfish was so flavorful, catfish is one of my favorite Thai dishes. The service itself is just ok, nothing amazing but also not that bad. But the servers seem to have very little charm in their service, maybe they need more monetary incentives to provide better service because it was very, "i just work here". My table and seat were a little adhesive with some kind of clear viscous material still on the table near the edge but it might have been some residual glue of some kind left over from a sign perhaps? First, I appreciate the staff members who are attentive and friendly. They make the dine in experience very welcoming. The restaurant is spacious with tables. We did not have to wait long to be served. As for the food, my favorite are drunken noodles, pad sew, fried rice, papaya salad, beef salad, chili with sweet and sour sauce on fish, and I can go on and on. The Boat noodles flavors were authentic and The taw jew are the exact same as a noodle dish from my husband's motherland from china teo chew which is very similar to the traditional Cambodian noodle soup, I'm pretty sure there's some inspiration from there. Although not traditionally Thai the flavors were all correct. I ordered to go and took my baby with me for pick up. On the way there she fell asleep and I didn't want to take her out and wake her so I parked right up front and called in. I explained how my baby was asleep and if they can bring my order out for me. This place makes the best boat noodles I've ever had. The soup is so rich it's like a warm hug my mother never gave me. Get it with the thick noodles and you'll forget pho ever existed. We got the Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Green Curry, Fried Catfish with Red Curry, Beef Salad, and Seafood Combination Soup. The green curry and pad see ew were our favorite, hence why there's no pictures of it. The green curry with beef was flavorful and the mild was perfect. It does not come with rice but we got a family size bowl on the side. The pad see ew with tofu was delicious and a great combination of savory and sweet. The beef salad and cat fish were pretty good, I like the spiciness of the red curry that came with the catfish. The soup and pad Thai however were not great. The soup was a bit too sour for me and the pad Thai was a little too sweet and soggy. Price: 4/5 Our total bill came out to around $120 for 5 people and six dishes plus a large side of rice. The green curry was a lot bigger than most other places. The pad see ew and pad Thai were a little on the smaller side. We were really satisfied with the meal, we finished all six dishes,. Trying to get back in the habit of writing reviews so I can remember which Thai restos I like and don't so here it is: Tantawan rice - rice was undercooked. We also ordered Tom kha so submergiving the rice in it helped cook the rice lol. Two pcs. Of shrimp. Pineapple was spoiled (accdg to hubby) but I think it's just really bad canned pineapple that's why it was tasteless. Overall, nothing special. Tom Kha - we've tried countless of Tom kha. This was second best in my opinion. Top Thai still has the best Tom Kha in my opinion. First Tom Khat that had soo much chicken in it. Chicken was even more than the mushrooms hehe. It was just a tad bit too creamy and sour for my taste but it was still good. Better than most. Bbq chicken - I'm a sucker for Char and it didn't disappoint. You can taste the grill for sure. Chicken is moist. It would have been the best Thai BBQ chicken in my opinion IF the chicken was more fresh.. it tasted like a couple of days old frozen chicken. But the Char somehow compensated for it. Beef satay - I only took one bite and never again. Hubby liked it but didn't love it. There was an unusual after taste.
