Came here to buy a sheet of polycarbonate to replace a cracked window in the garage. The store wasn't busy at the time and the employee at the front was helpful and informative about the different thicknesses and the suitability for my use. I gave him the dimensions and he put the request in to have it cut. After a short wait, a guy in back brings out the cut polycarbonate sheet to me. The initial employee that assisted me said to keep the protective film on the sheet and if it didn't fit my application, I would be able to return it. Great! As I'm loading the plastic into my car, I noticed a 4 inch tear in the protective film but thought nothing of it (assumed the sheet was clamped down to secure it while being cut and the film possibly stuck and tore while the clamp was removed). I finally had time to replace the window weeks later in the evening after work. I had the old window out and as I'm pulling the film off the plastic I notice under the 4 inch tear in the film was a marred area. It was late in the day and the old window was removed, I had no choice but to continue the installation. The fit was good but disappointed that the plastic has an area with scratches. The 4 inch tear in the white protective film was obvious and I expected the guy cutting the plastic to look over the final product and examine any imperfections for further damage. read more

I went in today on the advice of one of my friends. I was looking to replace the ugly, yellow plastic covers on my kitchen lights. I was greeted when I first walked in and then helped by Ryan. He measured the old cover I brought in and had me select a new clear cover. Once measured, the plastic was cut into six equal parts. Wait time was no more than 5 minutes. I went home and installed five of the six covers. I went back in to the store and Ryan trimmed the last cover (the light casing was not the exact same size as the others). Perfect fit this time! Tap has an incredible array of plastic products, and the sheets of plastic that I have bought there have been consistenly higher quality than equivalent types of plastic from other sources. I have found the staff to be very helpful. I have twice been there with many questions about gluing their plastics, and about bending them. An employee named Ed took the time to answer every question that I had, and gave me more information that I needed but didn't know enough to ask about. The web site has videos that are very helpful, but when I needed to go to the next level of precision, Ed got me going to where my projects came out wonderfully. I recently went to the Tap Plastics store and purchased a polycarb piece. This piece was to replace a curved glass piece on my curio that is expensive to replace. The polycarbon piece that I purchased was too thick to bend and force into the existing grooves in my curio. It also required a lot of effort/force to put in place. I returned the polycarbon and a store attendant named Jim suggested I use a thinner piece. He had it quickly cut and he then worked with my curio cabinet door (which I happen to bring with me) to fit the piece in place. Jim worked hard to make sure the polycarbon piece fit and took great care to make sure my door frame was not damaged by the force required to bend and fit the polycarbon into the cabinet grooves. I could not have exerted the force needed to install that polycarbon piece alone. Not only did Jim install my polycarbon, he did not charge me for the thinner cut piece. I walked in at 8:25 am and Melinda cheerfully greeted me. She showed me options for my small project, did the measuring and then quoted me what I thought was a shockingly low price. I thought she was joking. I paid and asked when I should come back for the completed work and she said, "Oh they will do it right now. It will only take a few minutes." She was right. I was walking out of there at 8:35 with 2 custom-cut acrylic/plexiglas liners for tea serving trays and only $11 lighter in my wallet. Hit or Miss! Back in October, 2015, I got a piece of seaboard fabricated so that I could use it to repair a drawer. I needed another one today, but the guy that was there today said that they didn't have the equipment to cut a notch in the seaboard. He either didn't know what he was doing or too lazy to take down the measurements for my project. The guy also had a poor attitude. If you need something custom fabricated, make sure you talk with a competent employee (like the one that I previously worked with). read more

TAP Plastics always has that special item you need or can't find, or the staff will assist you to find it or make it. An old desk lamp with a plastic lamp shade, couldn't find it. But Ryan at TAP PH had a great suggestion. Look online find something similar and bring it in, they would see what they do with it. Well after some time, Ryan crafted a new lamp shade at a fraction of the cost it would have cost. Customer Service is old school. Staff is polite and super friendly, always with a smile, and willing to help, like helping the young girl with a school project while her parents watched. read more

I built a small wooded frame for a BBQ and needed something to cover it for the rain. Tap Plastic recommended I use White Starboard. Since my frame was out of plumb, they expertly cut five pieces for each side/top and then labeled them so that everything matched. My thanks to Nick who took the order and Reed who cut the pieces. This place helped us save several hundred bucks fixing our car. We had a sledgehammer-related accident with the rear window of a pickup truck (was bound to happen really) and were given a $500 bid to replace it outright, because it was one of those three piece units with the sliding window built in. Instead, we traced out the pattern of the missing glass and had Tap cut us a piece of pre-tinted plastic, which matched the factory tint exactly, and then caulked it in. I think people's complaint about the staff is due to there only being a few of them, and two are always in the back with the saw. Once the guy up front got to us, he was very knowledgeable and set to work on our replacement part. We came back a few days later when our piece was ready to pick up. On the way out, I noticed a big bin of scrap plastic left over from previous jobs and grabbed a piece for a future project, and the sales clerk threw it in for free. We had such high hopes. If I could give minus stars I would!!! Initially we went in with a project in mind to creat a cover for our electronic pool control box bc ours broke. Jim was super helpful and we discussed the design and he sketched, quoted price. Told us to come back with measurements for some other parts of the design we discussed. We returned later that day with measurements and to ask about possibility of adding hinge or some other way to make a 'flap'. The person that 'helped' us this time was basically rude . He told my husband to bring the entire component in etc. Hello how am I suppose to unwire this thing to do that?! And than he refused to create the box /container . The guy made us feel stupid and was not realistic about what we could do . Won't go back if my life depended on it!!! read more

**UPDATE 6/20/2012: We drove back here today, expecting to have to argue with the same guy about giving us the wrong cloth. But when we walked in the door and asked for a refund, the manager came out to greet us and fully apologized for our experience yesterday! I was very surprised that he had already read my original review, which was only posted an hour or two prior to this visit. Talk about being on top of things! And needless to say, my partner, who knew nothing of this, was completely floored. The manager proceeded to roll up the AA cloth himself, and once again apologized for his employee's behavior. We described the cake float to him, and he was reminded of the Animal House movie with the death mobile - even more kudos, because that's exactly what our car is modeled after! We were pretty satisfied with having gotten a very sincere apology and not having to argue for a refund. But he went above and beyond this, and gave us the entire 20 yard roll of cloth, which is pretty expensive since we wanted AA, on the house! All I can say is "WOW". And of course revise my review on Yelp as a thank you... =) ORIGINAL - 6/19/2012: I would give this place ZERO stars if I could! I only came to this store because I had bought out all the AA fiberglass cloth at San Leandro (they only had 35 yards left) and El Cerrito was already out of stock. We took an extra long lunch hour from work to drive here, thinking it would be one quick trip to get what I needed - 20 yards of AA cloth, and a few yards of the 4-inch and 6-inch AA tapes. Some (apparently) relevant background info - I am a mid-20s Asian female and my coworker, who is also my partner for this project, is a middle-aged white male. We have a race car that we're building a giant cake float around for the LeMons race. We walked into the store, which is very tiny compared to the SL one. We at once spotted the fiberglass section on the left wall and walked straight over. One of the staff, a white male in his 50s probably, was already helping 2 other customers with their order, so we waited beside him. It just so happens we were also right in front of the AA cloth roll, so I stood there looking at it - with my hands behind my back. The employee turned his head to me and said curtly "That's fiberglass cloth. Don't touch." EXCUSE ME? First of all, there is a huge sign at the top of the rack that clearly says "Fiberglass". His tone was positively dripping with condescension and basically declared that he thought I could not READ the sign because I'm Asian, and that a GIRL like me does not belong in this store, as if I'm a CHILD in a room full of expensive breakable things. I was ready to walk out of the store at this point, except our deadline was coming up and we really needed the cloth. The next closest store is in SF and there was no way we could make it there and back within a reasonable time frame. So I said nothing, gave my partner a look letting him know I'm pissed off, and we waited patiently for the guy to finish moseying around the store. 5 minutes later, he was finally "ready" for us, and we told him specifically that we wanted the AA cloth. He looked around on the racks trying to find it, so we pointed the roll out to him - TWICE. He left to get a cardboard roll, so we walked over to the next aisle and did not pay attention to which cloth he was rolling up. He asked if we were building a boat, so my friend said no, it's for a giant cake. And here comes the contempt and condescension again - "Oh, Burning Man, eh?" Does this guy think he's working at Neiman Marcus? No, it's for a race car. Then we asked for the tapes, which he had to roll up also. It took at least FOUR tries for him to get the numbers straight (6 yds of 4" and 8 yds of 6" is not that hard). When he ran out of the 6" on one roll, instead of opening up a new roll, he asked "Is 6 yards OK?" You think we would ask for 8 yards if we didn't need it? This whole process took at least 20 minutes, as he did everything slowly and begrudgingly. As he was ringing our order up, I was looking at something else and overheard the total price; it crossed my mind that it seemed a bit low. But we couldn't take anymore at this point and just wanted to get out of the store ASAP. Fast forward several hours, we ran out of the previous roll of cloth, and proceeded to open up the new one. Lo and behold, it's the wrong cloth! I may not know the thickness of every single fiberglass cloth, but damn if I can't tell it's the wrong one by touch after working with it every night for 3 weeks straight! Now not only is our schedule behind, but we have to return to that store and see the guy again. Somehow I don't see this visit being any less horrible than the first, but at least this time I won't have to keep my silence!!! read more

A big shout-out to TAP Plastics in Pleasant Hill! I had gone in there a few days ago to buy a piece of acrylic for a mounted poster that I was going the frame. I had four mounting brackets on the back of it. When I left I didn't realize I'd dropped one in the store. I went to hang the picture and realized I didn't have the 4th bracket. Today (3 days later) I went in to see if by any chance they'd found it. "Oh,yes. We kept it behind the counter in case you came in. " What? I went to tap plastics all the time as a kid since my mom was into small hobbies and passed by to buy glue for a project my mom has going on. My mom and I walked in and the employees were kind and helpful. My mom got two plastic bases for a statue polished and in a "what could it harm" motion went to my car to get my horrible scratched ipod case. they returned it to me and i could actually clearly see though it! i browsed around and came back a week later and when i did they remembered me. Lateef was the main guy helping me and her was astounding. i had a bunch of frames made and since I'm low on cash he helped me economize with some scrap material and composite plastic that look just as great if not better and lighter. my mom and I spent about three hours in the store making things with scraps and having them cut plastic and left with works of art. i wish i could post pictures on here these frames are beautiful. the entire project was relatively cheap for the labor they put in to it and everything turned out perfectly. they made sure of it, walking you though the procedure every step of the way. that's service. that is what i want ind believe it i will return for many other plastic projects. read more

My go-to place for plastic sheet goods for my craft needs -- I can usually find what I need for my small projects in their scrap bin for a very reasonable price. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. The last time I was in, Nick saw me measuring things and doing mental arithmetic, and he brought out other pieces from the back that worked even better for my project. I went to Tap Plastics looking for a piece of plastic to cover my craft table. I didn't want to cover the whole table because it's very large. The only measurement I needed was for it to be 2 feet wide. I asked the cashier but he insisted on getting exact measures to give me a quote. Which by the way was out of my budget. I went there with the idea of getting a scrap piece, something already cut and at a low price. The man at the register insisted they had no such thing as pre cut, scrap pieces. Walking towards the end of the store I saw a bin with, guess what, scrap pieces, small but still the product the cashier claimed they don't have. I also had been to this store before and knew they do keep larger pieces, already cut in the back past a door. I pointed this out to the man, who mumbled it wasn't that hard to cut the piece. But that wasn't the point. He was not honest when he tried to sell me something that was going to require labor, which equals higher price. The service I received from this business was terrible. The cashier made no effort to help me, he made no efford to sell the product. I am very disappointed with Tap Plastics. read more

I recently went to TAP Plastics in Pleasant Hill originally to get a block or lucite so that I could mill out a box for a demonstration product that my company is prototyping. A gentleman named Ed was behind the counter and I inquired about the lucite block. They didn't have such a block and Ed advised me that there were better ways to get the box that I needed anyway. He proceeded to take great efforts to show me how to construct the box from cut 1/4 inch material and glue the box together with a special bottle of ethylene dichloride and a needle thin spout. He took the time to demonstrate on a couple pieces of scrap how to glue and how to keep the ethylene dichloride from dripping out on to the material when beginning to glue the parts togther. He then helped me size all of the parts, ordered them from the machine shop and had them in my hand very quickly after the order was complete. All in all, he spent at least an hour assisting and instructing me on the finer points of assembling the box and flash polishing the finished product. I left and went back to my lab and implemented all that Ed had taught me. My experience at TAP Plastics was terrific and I will absolutely be back. While looking around I got a number of project ideas for the future. And my project? It went together quickly and perfectly thanks to Ed! read more
