This place is getting comfortable with their food. They used to be my go to spot but now they don't really care about quality. Every taco we ordered came out cold. We asked them to heat them up and still came out cold and cheese wasn't melted. The menudo also came out cold and seemed old. The honeycomb tripe was tough and not fresh. I was in the area and decided to try Taqueria Vallarta. The restaurant was clean and inviting. While the food was tasty, the service was subpar. I had to request chips and salsa. At first, I thought the restaurant didn't provide them but saw servers bringing them to other customers. My server rarely came by my table and I actually had to wave at her to get her attention. I also had to ask about my to go menudo order several times because it took a long time. When I asked about it the staff members acted as if I was bothering them. I felt very unwelcome. I always come and get tacos from this place on my way to work usually just a bean and cheese and a Carne guisada. They're a little bit on the inconsistent side but tonight I decided to give them a try for cheese enchiladas. I ordered the cheese enchiladas plate with crispy beef taco the taco had little meat in it and the enchilada cheese wasn't even melted on top or inside. The rice had no flavor. I won't be there coming back then I went to check out and the lady that wasn't my server by the way, cashes me out she was all cold to me. My mom loves this place and I really want to as well, however I've been there twice and I've had terrible food both times. I tried the carne guisada plate and the meat was all gristle. Literally couldn't find one piece of "meat" that was edible. Next time I tried the huevos rancheros figuring it's pretty hard to screw up eggs. Wrong. This was our 'go to' for years. I don't know who or what changed but it's terrible now. Mostly have done drive thru for years but when my son was younger and we went for lunch the service inside was OUTSTANDING. I hadn't been inside in years and was surprised by the remodel. The waitstaff were incredibly rude, I was being really nice and all I got was eye rolling & 'do you know what you want yet?' like I didn't belong there. The salsas used to be the best in town and now there just caustic. I ordered a chicken chalupa with no beans, that's when the attitude came out. the menu clearly says beans. I should have just thrown down $5 for the chips and half filled bowl of watery red salsa that was terrible but rode it out. First indication was it was 5:30 and there were 2 cars in the parking lot, usually it's full. I usually WAY overtip, even at the drive thru but sorry. I paid in cash. No idea how much tip I left but it should have been $0. I've lived in SA all my life and there are so many tex-mex options you don't screw around if you want to stay open. This is a great Mexican food restaurant for a quick lunch. I have been here several times and always have great food with quick service. The customer service, coffee, & the food are great here! My wife and I stopped in this past Sunday after dropping off my sister at the airport. I'm pregnant and was craving a "good Mexican breakfast." Let me just say... this place did not disappoint! Their coffee is delicious and we never had to wait for a refill! We appreciated that all of the servers-whether or not we were their table-would stop and offer coffee. I ordered the huevos rancheros w/ barbacoa, which was absolutely amazing. The barbacoa wasn't extremely greasy and fatty. It was actually pretty lean, which I prefer. The ranchero sauce was hearty and delicious, as were the beans and potatoes. I can't say it enough-everything on my plate was delicious! My wife ordered the chilaquiles (her go-to at any new Mexican restaurant). Very different and delicious! - the tortillas are made fresh in house each day - it was plenty of food. Enough to for two meals - great prices. The dinner entree was $9. I took full advantage of the drive through with a plan to chow down at the airport. Why buy airport food when you can have San Antonio Tex-Mex from a great nearby place. Far from fancy. But the flavor and taste make up for what's lacking in the sonic drive up and wait appearance. I could not imagine what the size is inside but this is one meal I believe its worth eating in your car. Had an early morning appointment near Sunset and Broadway and afterwards had a taco craving. I found this place using Yelp and was not disappointed. In a very old reclaimed Whataburger (A-frame) building with pavement that was dips and humps and a pothole or two, there's some good stuff. It was breakfast but I asked if I could get any of their tacos and the super friendly staff said "no problem". So I tried their chicken fajita taco. I usually only order one for breakfast but for some reason I ordered two. I'm glad I did.. super fresh, really nice spices and flavor and great salsa choices (red was my favorite). Did I mention super friendly? Very nice staff and great food. They are now on my go-to list. And may I add.. covid19 has hit many businesses hard and especially the server staff. We are trying to go out to eat a bit more and I'm trying to tip double or more wherever I can when the service is good.. these folks work hard to make a living and if we can help them, we should try to help them climb back up. read more

I used to go here a lot before COVID and I really liked it, good quality food. I'm not sure if they are low staffed or what, but I came here for lunch yesterday and I was shocked when I opened my drive-thru order when I got back to my office. My chicken fajita nachos had all of the ingredients but as if they had been thrown in all over each other, not like anyone had actually made it. The chicken was sprinkled all over the nachos so it had zero flavor and was pretty nasty. The staff was very nice however through out my ordering process. I eat here more than any other restaurant. Hands down. I probably eat here more than all the other restaurants in SA combined. This place is fast, and cheap. The tacos are stuffed to the hilt. The service is fast and friendly! They have a drive thru, which is also fast! Yea, the place isn't exactly the cleanest. The bathrooms are fairly disgusting, and there have been cucarachas reported by others, but that's just part of the charm. My favorite is the breakfast tacos. The tortillas seem to be made on location, and they're huge. The tortas (Spanish sandwiches) are delicious and filling. The green sauce is hot and spicy. Delicious!
