My nephew just turned 13 & we went to Tarpy's Roadhouse to celebrate. We'd never been to Tarpy's before & looking at the menu was quite eye opening (translation: It's expensive). Our party of 13 (4 different families) all read the menu & everything looked delicious. The food IS delicious. I got the rib eye w/marble potatoes & broccolini. The potatoes were perfectly roasted & the char on the broccolini was great & gave it more dimension & flavor. The hubby got the New York strip w/the same potatoes & broccolini. Our daughter got the kids Hamburger w/fries. As an appetizer we got the calamari & do I dare say, it was better than the crow's nest in Santa Cruz. Our server was great & took care of us w/ordering all of our food & drinks. The ambiance is absolutely gorgeous. Next time, I'd love to dine alfresco. I would give 5 stars as a review but... I made a cake for my nephew's birthday & the restaurant charged us a cake service fee even though they didn't do anything w/it but put it in the fridge while we ate. We brought the cake in an aluminum cake pan & they took the cake out & put it on a wooden cutting board & napkin. The cake wasn't cut, we cut it ourselves & were charged a fee of $10.00? There is no mention of the cake service fee on the menu. Don't exactly know what this fee is for. I'd definitely give this place a try. The cocktails are good & the food is great. Great food and service! This restaurant is located outside the downtown area and had plenty of parking. We made reservations for 5pm, but was seated right away when we arrived around 4:30pm. There have both outdoor and indoor dining. The restaurant has a very warm, cozy, cottage vibe with brick walls. Our server, Nick was very friendly and funny. The food was amazing! My husband has been wanting to come to Tarpy's for months now. We're from Morgan Hill, so it's kind of a drive for dinner. The building is so unique, and the plants are beautiful. We ate inside because of weather, but will for sure be coming to eat outside on the patio in the summer. Get the bread pudding, it's the best bread pudding I've ever had! This was my first visit to Tarpy's and wow am I so impressed!!! You guys had the best customer service. Hands down!!! I walked in and didn't realize it was a bit fancier than I had expected so I was a bit nervous to take my 3 year old and 5 year old inside to eat. But we were so welcomed by everyone and my kids did great here! Not too sure of our server's name but he was so kind to us, even asked if we'd like our kid's food to come out with the appetizer and we said yes, we were so appreciative towards that!! The margarita was the best I've ever had, I added the house blend tequila for an extra $2, SO WORTH IT! The food was outstanding and just soooo freakin good!!! Perfectly cooked. You guys are awesome! This restaurant used to be one of our favorites when Tony Tollner had it. It's very convenient to our house, so it's very disappointing that we won't eat there anymore. The food is awful and very expensive and even the service has gone downhill. All 3 of their restaurants are bad. Too bad. Reply to Patrick F.: thank you for your reply to my review. I know your staff is much the same, but you must have less people working, because the last two times I ate there, our server was running around and we barely saw him. I always considered him the best server on the peninsula, but I think he is being run ragged. Perhaps he is covering a section in the dining room and in the bar. That's what it seemed like. The food is delicious. Came in here kinda full still so my husband and I decided to share the calamari and grilled california peach salad with a blackened salmon on top. We both agree the calamari is the best we have ever had. If all salads are as good as this peach salad I will have no issues eating a salad. I have been coming to Tarpy's for over 13 years. It is one of my favorite spots to come too. Came into dine yesterday with my Bestie and it was good but not as great as with previous visits. As costs continue to be inflated with everything including food it becomes increasingly difficult to justify spending premium prices on food that is decreasing in quality. Another note is that we were sat at a table in front of a bathroom, with all of the open seating consider the guest experience and consider not having a table directly in front of a bathroom door. It was not busy so while I fully understand seating the servers on a rotation that table should be a last resort! It's also not something you want to be dramatic about initially when being seated so we stayed. Pro's 1. Service- always warm and inviting by all staff! 2. Atmosphere- so beautiful inside and out. 3. Beverage from bar- love the berry bliss 4. Appetizer- we had the deviled eggs always a nice treat and made fresh. We also ordered the bread (which used to be free until COVID/New ownership) - Sidenote- when I come with my hubby we get crab cakes, some of the best I have had on the peninsula! Con's 1. Seating placement not ideal 2. Entree- We each ordered the angus burger and it was very mediocre. Mine was ordered medium and arrived medium rare. The bun was barley toasted which would have added extra flavor to the burger. The meat patty was a brick that was barley seasoned and was not fresh but frozen. The lettuce was very wilted. And the wedges were ok but I could tell not made fresh in house. I have had this dish before so I was shocked. 3. Desserts- we got the apple Crisp and cream brûlée and those were just okay. My friend said her apple crisp was really mushy and the cream brûlée could have stood up have a harder shell crisp on top. I overall I'm sure I will return but I will probably stick to one of the three dishes that usually are my go- to's: Chili crusted chicken, salmon or one of the steaks! read more

Ah a Friday of Indy cars at Laguna Seca and a wonderful dinner followed. Our waiter Nicholes was very charming and helpful. We decided to share tonight and ordered Dungeness crab cakes, a beet salad, half a rack of baby back ribs, and a chili crusted chicken. Everything was very good, we especially enjoyed the scalloped potatoes with the chicken and I really liked the basic potato salad & cole slaw that complemented the ribs. I was disappointed it appeared that the ribs didn't look like they even hit the grill, barely warm from the steamer and drenched from the bbq sauce. Tender yes hot no, tasty no. The chili crusted chicken was two medium breasts cooked with chili & spices. Tasty but not a "wow". The beet salad good well presented with red & white beets and butter lettuce, Dungeness crab cakes on the small side and fried a minute or so longer than I'd prefer.Still good but again no "wow here. Stopped here on our drive from Los Angeles to Monterey. I was taken aback by the beauty of the lush greenery. Once my husband and I located the actual entrance to the restaurant, we checked in and we're seated right away (I had made reservations for a birthday lunch prior to coming but the place was empty). We started with cocktails and the Calamari. I ordered the Striped Bass and my husband ordered the Braised Short Rib. Food and drinks were all delectable, seasoned perfectly. Hats off to the chef with that Sea Bass!! Crisp skin, buttery and flaky fish in that lemon sauce... omg!! My only qualm was the our server. She took quite a while just coming back to our table to take a drink order and appeared grumpy and was short with us for the duration of our time there. My only reason for the 3 star review. Servers at the tables next to us were happy, peppy, checking regularly on their tables. I guess we just unlucky... I'd definitely be back, bad service or not. My son's burger was undercooked, rare and no cheese. If you're asking what kind of cheese you want, you'd expect to receive cheese! We were trying to waive her down but she just kept going. My son ended up eating what he could. My ribs were super dry. The best part of my dinner was the wedge salad. When the waitress came to drop off our bill, I was able to finally tell her about the food. She walked off and stated they would take my son's burger off the tab. No apologies at all! I had lunch there today. I had the chef's choice of crudo which was very good but was more like a ceviche than crudo. The fish was halibut but it was chopped atop a watermelon radish as opposed to traditional crudo which is normally thinly sliced sushi style. I also had the spicy fish tacos. They were delicious. They were mini crispy tacos stiffed with spicy tuna. Really quite tasty. You can order 3, 4 or 5 tacos. Three was enough for me. A little pricy though. It was $75.00 which included 2 glasses of wine. Food without wine was over $50. I was seated and served right away and the server checked in regularly with me. At the end, he gave me the check but not a pen to sign it with, but maybe it fell on the floor when he was walking so i will not hold that against him. I had a pen in my purse. The ambiance was good. Came to Tarpy's after researching for a dog-friendly restaurant in the area, and ended up loving everything about this place, well everything except for the somewhat tacky cartoonesque signs all around . The space is beautiful: old Mediterranean style farm house with a gorgeous patio and garden (which makes the signs completely inappropriate). We sat right beneath a grapevine as we listened to live music. The vibe was perfect! I went inside and looked around. It is also gorgeous, with a fabulous bar and wine cellar. Service was great, and the food was delicious. We came for lunch so did salad and appetizers and then sandwiches. But those were not "normal" sandwiches! The salmon was cooked to perfection and delicious, and the Kobe burger with lobster... . Probably the best burger I've had in a long, long time. They best part is the stone patio, which is cozy on a cooler day and dramatic as low flying airplanes soar overhead on the landing path to Monterey airport. In town for the night and found this place on google. Was so busy we are lucky we got a seat! Id recommend a reservation ahead of time as theres some seating in the outdoor courtyard which would be perfect on a warm day like today. Staff was very welcoming the minute we walked up. We had the Artichoke, Sirloin, and Chicken,all which were cooked to perfection. Not a single complaint from either of us and I even got a dessert to go! Tarpey's is a great place to have a nice dinner for any celebratory occasion. From a huge alchol selection to gourmet food Tarpey's has solidified itself as one of the best to do it in the Monterey Peninsula. With that said there are some things that need to be addressed when it comes to their waiting staff , but we will address that later in this review . Like always I will break everything down in sections so that it could be a clear and quick read for those looking for reccomendations. THE SERVICE: If I were to analyze the service using metrics I would say that the food outweighs the service tremendously. Our server was rude and very short tempered. I understand that we are a large party but we should still be treated like PAYING customers , espically when we are spending $30 a plate. Not only was he uninterested and impatient but he literally took the plates of not 1 not 2 not 3 but 4 of our guest before they were done eating. Instead of taking our food ask next time. We roughly lost out on $70 worth of food because you took our plates prematurely. If you need a refrence , we were the party who sat outside where we had close access to the wash room and we were in at around 6pm on 6/9/21 . THE ALCHOHOL: The drinks were amazing , from mixed drinks to single barrel whisky flights, the variety is just out of this world. For myself I enjoyed the single barrel flight and it was better than I expected. THE FOOD : I do not know where to begin , my food was perfectly prepared and the portions were appropriate for the price point . I endulged in the 10z lamb shank which was cooked to perfection paired with polenta, and swiss chard. We also enjoyed the Kobe Burger which was also cooked to a great standard. This burger is topped with Bacon , lobster and truffle aoile which complimented the savory meaty goodness. On the downside, everyone who experienced the 1/2 rack of ribs complained about the meat being too fatty which I can attest to (I sampled off a family members plate) . Also several of our party was disgruntled at the fact that they werent able to finish their food before it was taken from them . THE CONCLUSION: I will say that this restaurant is worth the price if you get a server who has the service to match the product . However if majority of the servers acted like this they will definitely lose buisness in the long run, but i digress . The food was good, but the service was mediocre. Ordered a salad and asked to have that first. They started to bring out the hot food and forgot the salads. When I said, I preferred to have the salad first, but since the hot food is here cancel the salad, and I got the strangest look from the server. I'm not sure if he was irritated that I asked to cancel the salad or just didn't understand me. Then I ordered a drink and ask for limes. They forgot the limes. The people in the party had to wait for her salad even after the food came out. They put us outside at a gas fireplace table and then during the meal, they turned on one of the overhead Tower gas heaters behind us and we didn't realize it. Started to get very overheated trying to eat our dinner. They started the fire pit table that we were eating at, and it was very narrow to put all your dishes and food, but the place was packed so we let that part go. Made a reservation on Open Table without issue. Got there 15-20 minutes before our reservation and we were able to get seated early. We tried to get our reservation for earlier but I got put on hold and I finally hung up because I never reconnected with the hostess. It turned out to be fine. Our server and busser were very attentive. Our server did a great job of checking in, answering questions and making sure that our food came out at the same time. The busser was very attentive, immediately taking away plates, asking if we needed anything etc. We ended up getting the following items: Sumano's sourdough bread (warm and delicious- local favorite from Watsonville) Sriracha Ribs appetizer Monterey Salad (vegan, contains nuts, gluten free) Vegan Spiced Cauliflower plate (contains pistachios) Walleye fish plate Sport Tea (consistently refilled without asking) Guava lemonade The salad was delicious! Piled with mushrooms, nuts and other gems. It was well seasoned and had the perfect amount of salad dressing throughout, The cauliflower plate was beautiful to look at and again, perfectly seasoned. The SO liked the ribs (fall off the bone tender and gone in five minutes). The Walleye was cooked perfectly. We looked around to see what the other tables were ordering- everything looked delicious! We had no room for dessert- so far there are some desserts that are gluten free, but none that are vegan. I appreciated the easy to read labeling of items that were gluten free, vegan etc. Makes it a lot easier when pre-reading the menu ahead of time, and looking at the menu at the restaurant. Wifey and I took the day off to have lunch at Tarpy's on Tuesday and it was amazing. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was just perfect. We order some appetizers and for the main course I had the beef ribs and it was tender as it can be. Wifey had the sea bass and the skin was crispy. To wash it down I ordered the old fashion and wifey has the berry bliss and she enjoyed that drink. Jessica out waitress was awesome. It was our first time there and definitely will return. Me and my fiancé have been coming to Tapry's for about a year now. It has great food and it's a great date night spot. We usually get the ribeye steak which is pretty decent. It's not the best steak I have had but it's still delicious. Sometimes the steak comes out a little undercook which we have to send back but most of the time it's perfectly medium rare. The inside of the restaurant is not all that amazing it looks basic and a tad outdated. If you do go definitely recommend the outside seating with the beautiful garden scenery. Food was decent enough, although the chopped brisket sandwich I had was so-so; I would have preferred that the bbq sauce be a little lighter to let the beef shine through. The meat itself was sufficiently tender with a little bit of chew (not OMG tender- but I didn't expect it to be) Other items ordered by our party included a cob salad, and a lunch salad with chicken added - all looked good and nobody complained. Wait staff was courteous, but there were a few miscues where they brought an order destined for another table, and when ours arrived they initially placed them in front of the wrong person - no big deal. There were only two distractions during our lunch; one was the airplanes that sounded and felt like they were about to land on top of the market umbrellas, the other was the musician who would have sounded just as fine (perhaps more so) at half the volume as it challenging to carry on a conversation. Our favorite dishes are: Spicy Tuna Tacos - the fish is fresh and the sauce is seasoned perfectly. Crispy Calamari - the breading is so light and the calamari is never tough. The sauce it comes with is yummy! Sriracha Ribs - these ribs are so tender they fall off the bone. The sauce is perfect for me, but a little too spicy for others. Gruyére Scalloped Potatoes - yummy Shrimp and Grits - the shrimp is never overcooked and the grits are creamy We had dinner there last Sunday, and it was packed (as usual). This was the first time in about 20 yrs that I've eaten here since moving away to another part of California. We were here to celebrate our son's graduation from UC Santa Cruz. My biggest complaint was the service. Our waitress was slow and not overly friendly. We were promptly seated however a table next to us that was seated long after we were received drinks and their FOOD before we even got our drinks. Food quality has sadly declined in my opinion. I think the best meal that was served was the meatloaf. Everything else was mediocre at best. Tarpy's catered and delivered a spectacular lunch for my department leaders. The delivery was timed perfectly. Everyone had made their own customized choices and were extremely satisfied!
