Love this place. Out of their three restaurants this one is my favorite! My go-to is always the passion fruit margarita. I'm a sucker for the bruschetta, the meatloaf(with scalloped potatoes instead of mashed), and the chili crusted chicken. Went a different route my last visit and ordered the prime sirloin and OMG how delicious! Plus it comes with a heaping amount of sautéed spinach with blue cheese crumbles that were to die for! It is airy and roomy and the decor is comfortable, almost homey. Our server was professional. She was well groomed, smiled genuinely and knows the menu. She has a great talent for timing, something not every professional waiter possesses. The food this day was not very good. The fried calamari starter was good but the entrees were not. I ordered meatloaf. Substituted the standard green beans for coleslaw. The meatloaf was okay but the gravy tasted institutional. Together it tasted like Campbell's, something you might be served at summer camp. The mashed potatoes were fine but the horseradish slaw did not taste or look very fresh. My wife remarked about her angus burger that the juice from the medium cooked patty pretty much obliterated the bottom half of the bun. The top half was on the stale side. She rejected the cole slaw. Not fresh was the basis of her complaint. My sister ordered the brisket sandwich. The beef is diced into very small square pieces and covered in a sauce. Presentation just looked odd. I will give them the benefit of the doubt being a holiday weekend and with graduation groups lined up all day. I'm looking for a reason to return because I like the facility. Our server was great and we were seated promptly (we had a reservation). We had the crab cakes, artichoke, meatloaf, chili-crusted chicken, Fuji salad, and chocolate cake. The food was alright. The crab cakes were good but dry but the sauce that came with them wasn't great. Same with the artichoke, it was cooked well but it was weird that it came from what tasted like jarred pesto. During a weekend getaway in Monterey, we had a birthday dinner at Tarpy's and it was such a lovely experience. It was the first time I've ever sat around a firepit table, which was kind of mesmerizing and kept our group warm and cozy all night. The patio was absolutely gorgeous and the live music made the evening extra special. The wait staff is so friendly and accommodating and checked in on us regularly. When my daughter asked for a hot cocoa, they made one for her even though it wasn't on the menu. Everything we ordered was fantastic from the deviled eggs and crab cakes to the kobe burger and braised short rib, and the Heirloom Apple Crackle and Firestone Walker Double Barrel Ale Chocolate Cake were both amazing. read more

Not a good experience at all. Ordered the tuna tacos appetizer, took a bite and mayonnaise oozed out everywhere; it turned my stomach.. Ordered salmon entree, the broccoli was undercooked, the salmon was overcooked, the risotto was slimy. Coffee was good. Service was brusque though adequate up until dessert time when the waiter brought the table silverware for the desserts and literally put his fingers on the business end of each piece, fingering the fork tines and the bowl of the spoons instead of handling them by the handles. Either the waiter was poorly trained and lacking in decency and common sense, or maybe this "special service" was just for us, a racially diverse group. Never going back. I returned to Tarpy's because my last meal there just 2 weeks earlier was impressive--a new menu with raviolis and other new entries. The first sign that things were amiss was I opened my rolled cloth napkin to retrieve the silverware and found a food crusted fork. My guest and I retrieved additional silverware in rolled napkins on an empty table, and found 3 of 4 with dirty silverware--particles of food remnants on the fork. I mentioned it to the server & she said she would have done the same thing... The wood table felt sticky to the touch. It was not a good start to the meal. The server herself had a runny nose. I considered leaving before we even started but did not want to ruin a rare night out. Its very concerning since there is yet another round of Covid going around... The artichoke appetizer was under cooked and difficult to cut. The mushroom raviolis, the same dish I ordered 2 weeks earlier and raved about, were barely warm, and a little gummy from a lack of cooking. This time the sauce was an unappetizing green color reminiscent of the Exorcist vomit scene, and had hard pieces of unknown chopped food, including some raw carrots. The previous time it was a yummy, melt in your mouth creamy sauce with some of the elements mentioned in the menu on top of the dish. My guest's rib rack, $38.00 was ok though unremarkable enough to compete with Costco's cooked ribs, though the potato salad was pedestrian--sort of like something from a large volume deli. I asked him how he compared Tarpy's with the cooked ribs from Costco--and he actually preferred the barb Will probably not be returning because of the inconsistent presentation of the vegetarian dish that on one occasion was really good..After contacting management I was simply given what I have seen is their standard response to complaints--that they hope they will not be judged by the experience. read more

Thanks to the pandemic, we hadn't been here in awhile, and things have really changed. First, the delicious sourdough bread that used to come with your meal is now $4.95. We ordered our usual Cobb salads, no onions. Our waiter assured us they don't put onions on it. Both salads arrived with onions and had to be remade. The Cobb salad used to be in a huge bowl, with a section of chopped eggs, another of diced chicken, another of chopped up bacon, another of tomatoes, etc. Now it's on a medium square plate. The overcooked and very dry chicken breast is in four thin strips you have to cut up yourself. Instead of diced tomatoes, you get one grape tomato in each corner. Ditto on the egg, which was quartered and placed in between the tomatoes. We had to ask for chopped bacon. I thought that was a standard part of a Cobb. The entire presentation appeared to be a dinner side salad and it was $40 for the two of us at lunch. This used to be a filling meal that we weren't always able to finish. This time we ordered additional food. On the plus side, both of our waiters were friendly, competent, and quickly fixed problems brought to their attention. Have been here many times and had great food and ambiance one of my go to places in Monterey. Anyway we ordered ribeye and flavors were awesome. Blue cheese mashed was deliciously flavored and a great contrast to the Demi. My fellow diner had swordfish which was not flavorfully seasoned overcooked and the sauce was nothing to write home about vegetables were prepared correctly. Calamari was acceptable. The artichoke was inedible and so tough it damn near choked me .... The star of that late was pesto and tomatoes, maybe they should serve it as the appetizer. read more

I visited Tarpy's the other week with a few old friends. I've been frequenting this establishment for many, many years and have always been appreciative of the great service and delicious food. If I was writing this review solely based on my service and food I would issue 8-stars. The lamb was perfectly cooked... delicate, mouth-watering, juicy and fell off the bone tender. It wasn't overly gamey and the accompanying polenta and greens paired with it perfectly. My server was absolutely amazing... attentive, friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the menu items. Our glasses were never empty and he took extremely good care of us. We felt at home the entire visit. During our visit, however, we watched a woman, who identified herself as the owner, approach each table, interrupt positive guest interactions and basically aggressively "quiz" each guest about their experience. Half of the time she asked these questions within earshot of her staff responsible for that area and it made each of them appear very uncomfortable. Her questions sounded scripted... as if she had memorized them from employee performance review documents. Most of the time she received positive feedback about her servers (just as I gave her positive feedback about our server and meal when she interrupted my visit and conversation with my friends)... and with each positive answer she received, she appeared... annoyed. It felt like she was trying to bait negative answers and harass her employees and it made us (and the people around us that I could overhear after she walked away from them) very uncomfortable. It ruined the mood of the trip for me and I can honestly say I feel sorry for the staff under her watch. I'm a business manager/restaurant owner of over 25 years and have never "grilled" guests or harassed my staff in such a way. I'd be absolutely ashamed... and probably would have lost half of my staff as a result. And it's because of what she turned the overall experience into that I'm rating one of my favorite restaurants only two stars. I think she should stick to the books, leave the guests alone and let her aces do their jobs just as wonderfully as I've experienced they always have. read more

Tarpy's has been a favorite of mine for years! They have the best patio for a lovely lunch (Tuna tacos, yum!). Inside has fireplaces and a coziness, perfect now that the weather is cooling down. I was sat and looked at the menu to decide on a drink, 5 min had passed and two servers had walked through our section without a simple greeting. Fine. 10 minutes passed by and still no greeting, no bread, no drinks. Ok. I got quite annoyed by this. The same server had closed out two bills from tables next to ours. Popcorn Prawns - No miniature shrimp here! These are jumbo-sized and breaded to perfection! The okra that accompanies it is delicious, as well. Monterey Bay Calamari - Large pieces of calamari and the two dipping sauces really make it unique. Sriracha Glazed Ribs - Perfectly spicy hot! This was probably my favorite, to be honest.
