I love Tarrytown eateries so when my girls decided to meet up for a nature run with me at the Rockefeller State Preserve, I was happy to know we would be heading back to the village for lunch. We yelped a few spots and decided upon Tarry Tavern. I called to make sure they were open because their listing shows their hours as being 11am-noon which I figured is a mistake (mental note to contact admin). When we arrived, we were seated quickly. They were empty when we got there which is understandable, given the time of day and day of week. I asked for some hot tea since I was still freezing from our sweaty forest romp (that sounded sexier than intended). They have a nice tea box with a few flavours to choose from and I went with the Jasmine tea. They serve your tea in a personal kettle and I would suggest letting it steep for a few moments before pouring. I love that because you get more bang for your buck. As for the food, I went with their Kale and Quinoa Veggie Burger with White Cheddar and my friends both ordered the Cobb Salad. The portions are pretty big. When my burger came out, I was pleasantly surprised. It looked huge and came with a side of fries. I cut it in half as I do with all of my burgers. It smelled great, almost like stuffing and you could see whole white beans mixed in the patty. I usually don't order veggie burgers because they tend to be dry but I took a chance. Unfortunately, when I started to eat it, it dismantled completely. The mixture is terrible. It crumbled at first bite and just kept falling out of the bun the entire meal. I ended up having to eat it with utensils. It is very dry and almost tastes like it is made of cornbread. There was almost no kale in the patty and those huge, whole beans added to the instability of the burger. It is very poorly constructed, bland and definitely in need of a revamp. I ate half of it and most of the fries, which were good, out of necessity since we had just run and I definitely needed food on my system but I will definitely never get a veggie burger from them in the future. My friends both enjoyed their salads and I would be lying if I had a bit of FOMO because they actually enjoyed their food. I was a little disappointed but didn't mention it to the staff which I usually do but as I don't normally eat veggie burgers, this one may be what people like and also, I was in a bit of a rush and didn't have the time for a refire or a conversation about the menu. In my opinion, though, if you order a sandwich or burger, it should be expect to be able to be eaten by hand and if most of it falls apart and ends up in crumbs on your plate and lap, it probably wasn't prepared well. I'm definitely not saying that I'm writing off Tarry Tavern. I would like to visit again and perhaps try something off the menu that is more familiar. The menu looked great. The decor is very nice and quaint. The staff is very attentive and service was very much on point. This was one of the best meals that both my husband and I have had. We came here from Long Island for a small overnight getaway. Came across this restaurant and we are so happy that we did. The food was extremely fresh and absolutely delicious. Drink selection was incredible as well. Our server, Joe, was extremely nice and so was Henry, the owner. Glad I ordered the grilled octopus and watermelon salad to close out the summer on Labor Day weekend. We visited Tarrytown on a whim and hoped the outdoor dining would be available. I loved that the town closes a portion of Main Street just for outdoor dining. Made the decision to eat much easier. A huge bonus for allowing dogs to sit outside with the owners. Returned to the Tavern to meet a friend who had flown in from Florida. She was staying in Tarrytown and I recommended meeting here. Even though it was a Thursday night the restaurant was still pretty busy. I remembered the "walking dead" Cabernet wine and had it again. It was just as delicious and bold as the last time. We ordered the burrata to share and it was perfectly served. The temperature and texture were pleasing to the palate. The solid exterior with the soft creamy interior in combination with the diced tomatoes on the side was pleasing especially on the table bread. It was obvious it was fresh and tasted as if it came straight from Italy. The entire staff caters to you and work as a team making sure your water glass is always full and you constantly have a fresh dish and silverware. Our waiter Joe was especially on point with making sure we had everything we needed while giving us ample time to enjoy our company. This time I ordered the duck breast served on the cranberry rice and my husband ordered the thick strip streak which was perfectly cooked medium rare as he asked and served with sautéed spinach and a potato gratin. The steak was plump, juicy and tender like an in bone filet. We were too full for dessert so just enjoyed another round of drinks. Joe sent over 2 desserts that were out of this world! An all American apple tart with vanilla ice cream and an Italian panna cotta which is a custard served with a fruit sauce on top. Couldn't decide which one we enjoyed more. Neither one was overly sweet and were the perfect end to our meal. Amazing how we found room for these 2 delicious treats. Well, I wasn't kidding when I said this was my new favorite restaurant. Guess I'll have to keep returning with friends until I've tasted everything on the menu. They just don't seem to have a bad dish. Don't think twice about a dinner here. The star decision was not an easy one here. On one hand, the service was excellent. We wanted for nothing. We changed tables and they were very gracious. The atmosphere was very nice. The simple facade you see from the street belies the charming interior, which I would describe as rustic elegance. The food had some high points: the roasted duck was great. The white sauce and carrots were good also. But the rice mixture was not to my liking at all. To the point that I made sure not one single grain was missed as I scraped it off each bite of duck! (Minus an entire star for that because it was half of my entree. Otherwise, an easy 5.) For starters we had Burrata Cheese, which alone was decent, but if you spread it on the table bread it suddenly becomes amazing! Not sure how that even works, but the persimmon flavor stood out along with the lovely creamy cheese, when before (aka no bread) the balsamic vinegar was really the highlight of the dish. In conclusion, I would definitely try it again and I would even recommend you go - just avoid the rice! read more

Ate here again tonight; again, delicious! I had the branzini (it's a Mediterranean fish if you're not sure- I wasn't, lol). It was perfect along with the roasted cauliflower and sauce it came with. Before the meal, I had their wedge salad (minus the bacon; I'm one of the few people who isn't a fan of it!) and loved the blue cheese dressing. We ate a late lunch here on January 1st after helping CAS and Gravy move into their new place. Wife began with chicken liver mousse with cornichon, pickled onion slices and grilled bread. Perfect! I began with the burratta cheese with beets and chopped nuts. Uh....perfect too! Her main was their mac and cheese which they topped with pulled pork. instead of the usual lobster. The service staff is professionally skilled at their craft, and they treat the restaurant as though each of them personally own the establishment. The food and wine knowledge, the proper placement as service wares, and a sharp dress is certainly appreciated and noted. Now let's get to the food: The kitchen is certainly the star here. There is a mix of modern and classic dishes with an impressive myriad of fresh, local ingredients. (How they curate so many different ingredients is puzzling.) This reviewer is in his late 40s, so I found myself on each visit, ordering throwbacks to the late 80's and early 90's, like a perfectly executed Tuna Tartare with the usual Pacific Rim or Asian treatments of ginger, soy, avocado and crunchy gaufrette potatoes. The Seared NYC was cooked perfectly with a sauce which otherwise comes overly-reduced in other places. On one occasion, I ordered the Chicken - perfectly seasons with salt, fresh herbs and olive oil and nicely dissected into perfectly cooked parts on roots veggies and sprouts! The Gnocchi were tender, pan-seared and swimming in a buttery sauce with crunchy peas. I had the fettucine on one visit with braised duck, bright paquillo peppers and olives - a dish that is sometimes made too muddles with stewed flavors, but this one bright with hints of acidity that made me crave more. On another cold evening, I had the best Ribolita ever- always a throw-away in a kitchen, simply to offer some sort-of soup, but this one had hand-made stock, a touch of tomato, and veggies that were nicely cooked and not too soft... finished off with salty parmesan and grilled bread, this was a meal in itself. There is also chicken liver dishes, Branzino with Raisins and Cauliflower (very sicilian), and Octopus that should be eagerly tried. (I cannot wait to explore the menu!) In summary, if you are visiting the Hudson River towns, you will find waterfront restaurants with Posh interiors and scenic views - this is not one of them, but cozy for dates. You could certainly book one of the higher end hotels or bed and breakfasts but that sometimes breaks the wallet. The staff in other places nearby are young and better-looking but at the expense of a poor service experience. And if you are looking for the best food in the area (from this foodies perspective) there is no other option than Tarry Tavern for its affordable, small=town charm, and skilled kitchen read more

We had a very nice, relaxing and romantic birthday dinner here last night. We loved the ambiance. This spot used to house a favorite, northern Italian place, but we figured we'd give Tarry Tavern a try. We were not disappointed! Our appetizer was a delicious warm octopus dish with roasted potatoes. It was delightful, with perfectly tender octopus. It would have made a perfect dinner! For dinner I had the Stone Church Duck Breast. It was tender, juicy and was exactly what I wanted. I wish I had photographed it, it was so artfully arranged with the vegetables. He had the NY Strip Steak, also delicious, and was quite happy with it. Service was excellent. Our wine pairings were perfect, and the owner stopped by to speak with us. My husband and I had reservations for 6 o'clock on a Friday evening, before a concert at the Tarrytown Music Hall. We were seated promptly. The atmosphere is cozy and warm. The waitstaff was attentive. My husband ordered the Pinot Noir by the glass and I ordered the the Malbec. Both were quite acceptable. The Malbec was smooth. I had the salad greens as an appetizer. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. It was fine for me because I wanted something lo- cal and something healthy. But some of the other appetizers looked delicious. My husband had the parmesan crusted gnocchi with prosciutto as his appetizer. I had to sample a tiny bite. It was delicious, especially the cream sauce. The presentation was pretty as well. For my entrée I had salmon and red quinoa. It was very flavorful. I like my salmon cooked well, even though that is probably not the correct way to eat it, and it was cooked exactly per my request. My husband had the New York strip steak with spinach and scalloped potatoes. He said it was also very tasty. It was cooked perfectly. For dessert we shared the lemon ricotta tart. It came topped with strawberries and Milano cookie. It was as delicious as it was pretty. My husband had coffee, which she said was not the greatest, and I had peppermint tea. The entire bill with tax came to $114. We felt that was very reasonable considering we each had an appetizer, each had a glass of wine, and shared dessert. We've had much less for much more. I would love to write a review. I called to make a reservation, and was told that they don't take reservations in October on the weekends. That should be stated on their website. As well, I asked if I came, do they put names on a list and he could not answer me. I was told that they are so busy, that you could come but he couldn't even tell me what a normal wait time would be. I said an hour / an hour and a half and he indicated maybe more, and couldn't guarantee I would get a table. I was willing to come and wait, but the gentleman seemed to dismiss that idea. Wonderful food, creative but not pretentious, nice little venue, friendly staff, and nice and close to the Tarrytown Music Hall if you happen to be going there as we were. Parking in Tarrytown is no joy, but at least at 5pm on a Sunday we had no trouble. We had a date night tonight at Tarry Tavern tonight. I recommend booking reservations as there were only seats at the bar when we walked in. The food was overpriced and only okay. I had the strip steak which was one of the more expensive items on the menu it had a good flavor but was too dry and over cooked. It was served with potatoes which were in a weird block like shape they were not very good. The spinach that was also served on the side was super super garlicky. Water never emptied, the two guys were very professional until an older lady (I can only assume the owner) came to our table, My friend and I were still eating she lifted the plates glasses everything mid eating and handed us the check and waited by the table for us to pay! From what I can gather it's a very local spot which is fantastic as staff knew most people by name.... But just a heads up to management... maybe don't sit "randomers" at regulars tables and rush them when said regular arrives!!! I was at Tarry Tavern for a rehearsal dinner, and our group took up three large tables at the back of the restaurant since there's no separate room for events. At least we had easy access to the bathroom! The meal started off with bread and butter that was shaped into the letters T which was cute. The first course was a salad, the main I selected salmon with green lentils, carrots, and parsnip puree, and for dessert, we all got vanilla bean panna cotta. Other main course options consisted or roasted chicken and ricotta cavatelli with braised short rib, both which got thumbs up from those who opted for those dishes. The food was very good and reminded me of my local tavern. Not transcendent but solid. Portions could have been slightly bigger, but no big deal. The servers in their checkered/gingham shirts were attentive and polite, and the atmosphere reminded me of a grandma-type's living room, homey and welcoming. Parking was slightly challenging but doable. Not sure if or when I would be back in Tarrytown, but I'd pay a second visit to Tarry Tavern. read more

Must trys- To get in the mood is the chicken liver pate. Go strong with the incredible Short Rib lasagne. All kept together with the delightful quartino mega glasses of vino (hand picked by the owner) that are approachable and yet leave no utterances of "hmmmm let me try another".
