I had a burger with onion jam that was so amazing, juicy, and meaty, and I stole the blue cheese from my mom's salad to put on my burger, which I also loved. I replaced the usual fries with a salad because I'm healthy like that and also because the taste buds were in the mood to digest some leaves. Great choice. Went to dinner with my family which included a toddler and infant. Owner and his staff were extremely accommodating and very friendly. The menu speaks for itself. First time here. Two of us Had the Rack of Lamb special and it was tender, flavorful and absolutely delicious. If I could give less than one star, I would. I've eaten at many restaurants and had a lot of good, bad and in between experiences in my life. But never anything as bizarre as this and I've never met anyone as rude as the owner of this establishment. I was one of the other diners at Mary's table (http://bit.ly/fVDwAl). We were the couple that supposedly arrived late and stood at the bar while the hostess ignored us. Luckily my wife thought to text our friends and they found us. So that's at least ten minutes wasted because the hostess couldn't be bothered to figure out what the party we were meeting were already there and waiting for us. Our appetizers arrived pretty quickly. I had the chicken liver mouse which was fantastic and really set me up for the burger I was expecting. Nearly 45 minutes later, with wait staff zipping nervously to and fro throughout the restaurant but never even turning to look at us or tell us our meal was coming, we asked someone to get our waiter. My wife told the waiter we had tickets for a concert (the Tarrytown Music Hall is down the block and I'm sure that accounts for more than half of their patronage) and we had barely 15 minutes to spare at that point. The waiter stared at my wife for what seemed like 30 seconds -stared at her - and then said he would check. A few minutes later he returned to say our food was coming. At this point, since other tables who walked in after us were already working on their deserts, we figured it was time to cut our losses and leave. We asked to see the manager to inform him we just wanted to pay for what we already had and leave it at that. This is where it goes from annoying to outrageous. The manager (who apparently is the owner Henry Cabral) stormed over to our table and before we could get a word in edgewise he started shouting at us that there would be no compensation (we never asked for any) and that it was our fault since we were late. He stood there in the middle of the floor and shouted at us. You could have heard a pin drop. We got our check and started to get up to leave. As I passed the Henry Cabral at the bar I mentioned that he just might want to apologize to us for shouting at us. He showed me the door, practically shoving me through it. A real class act that Henry Cabral. Needless to say we will not be back. And we would strongly urge anyone who is going to a show at the Tarrytown Music Hall to find somewhere else to get a bite to eat before a show. read more

I went to the Tarry Tavern this evening (6-20-2014) with my wife, mother, and 2 yr old son for a second visit, as the first was pretty good 3-4 Star for food. Unfortunately, tonight's visit was cause to never return. The food which again was 3-4 stars was OVERSHADOW by the owner becoming completely unhinged on a women approx 50 year of age at the bar who had requested something to be wrapped a certain way. My table was approx 20 feet from to despicable display of raw anger at this women. He was so loud all the other patrons were interrupted . The poor women was visibly shaken and speechless. Other tables with child were also visibly shaken to include my son. After he unleashed on this women her husband came to her defense only to see the owner walk off towards the back of the restaurant and yell at additional patrons who were with this women and her husband (two other women ranging in age from approx. 50-70 years of age and a young preteen child). The owner then literally stormed into the kitchen were the husband followed to defend the other members of his family. To say this was unacceptable behavior is and understatement.... I asked for my check and asked the women who gave it to me how do you not have someone apologies on his behalf she stated this is the owner and my husband and he's under a lot of stress. With that I let her know, we would never return as did the two tables adjacent to us. I do not enjoy writing this review, but felt it necessary. Wow, where is Gordon Ramsay when you need him? It was my wife's birthday. I wanted to take her out to a nice dinner. Made reservations for 6:00pm, there weren't too many diners at this point and we were seated immediately. Staff seemed nice enough. Ordered 3 appetizers and an entree. Meanwhile, tables to the left, right and behind us were being seated. Waited 35 mins, finally got 1 out of the 3 appetizers (a bowl of soup). Granted it was initially delivered to the wrong table but we didn't care. Yes food! 15 mins later, while the other tables were finishing their appetizers and starting in on their meals, all we're left with was an empty bowl of soup. A lady two tables over from us politely asked the waitress if her food was coming because she had to leave for a concert soon. We chimed in with the same issue. She says she'll check on it. Another 20 mins later, still nothing. Other tables are receiving their desserts or checks and are leaving. The waitress hasn't come back to check on us so we try to get her attention. She finally comes over to tell us that there "might be a mix-up" and will check on it. Didn't she "check on it" 20 minutes ago? 10 mins after that, new customers are being seated around us and still no food! At this point, we're just trying to get the check. When the waitress finally comes over, we ask for the check and it takes her another 10 minutes just to bill us for our soup! The whole experience felt more like some twisted hostage situation than a dining experience. If you have 2 hours and don't mind spending $11 for an okay bowl of soup then this place is for you... cuz that's all you'll get. Otherwise AVOID AVOID AVOID! Came in for dinner before a concert and unfortunately was severely underwhelmed. The hostess greeted us right away and it seemed a little busy so we opted for the bar. We sat at the bar and right away I noticed the bar was a disaster. Dirty dishes and empty glasses by the draft tower and random empties behind the bar. The bartender wasn't bad, per say, but he hardly said anything to us. The first word he said was "hi," and that was after he dropped out menus and we were ready to order. I got up to use the men's room twice and both times a rude-ass server cut me off and didn't let me pass and once straight bumped into me. Rude. On top of that they looked like they were in the weeds. The food came out fast and was really good, kudos to the kitchen, however good service is about a lot more than food, especially for the prices at this restaurant. Fantastic NYC Style meal for non NYC prices! In my newly decided quest to try 1-2 new local restuarants a month (instead of eating Chinese Takeout 2 times a week), I suggested to my girlfriend we start soon, and with Tarry Tavern being the newest on the block, we decided to start here. We arrived to a very, very busy restaurant with no reservation, but they were able to accommodate us, and very graciously. We were appreciative. Looking at the menu presented us with a tough choice, as it seemed they had two full menus, one seasonal, one perpetual. In the end, I would order the buttternut (or was it acorn?) squash soup to start, and the braised short rib as an entree. My girlfriend went with the NY Strip. The soup was out of this world. It was also ridiculously hot, so it took me a while to eat, but it was fantastic. Light and flavorful, good portion, just delicious. The entrees were both fantastic as well. The rib was "no knife required" tender, and the parmesean polenta might be my new favorite side dish. Seriously...i haven't felt this amazing about a new side dish in months. I've already started researching how i can make it, even though i don't think mine will stand a chance to theirs. My girlfriends main was also fantastic--albeit the steak was a little heavy on the fat...but with that came flavor, so it's a 50/50 call. Her mashed potatos were so creamy and delicious too. With wine, beer, food, tax and tip, the bill was under $90, which you really can't complain about. The only thing I CAN complain about was the wait between soup and main. While a wait is to be expected, especially on a busy night, this started to get a little much. In fact, the waitstaff didn't even check in on us between courses, which i thought was curious, considering how on top of their game they were every other minute of our stay. Went here based on the reviews, i was incredibly disappointed. I ordered the ravioli for an appetizer, and they take Al Dente a little to literally, It was cold and barely cooked, hard and dry. For dinner, I ordered the NY Strip, Medium, with scalloped potatoes w truffle, and spinach. My son ordered the same. My strip was over cooked, the potatoes were freezing and no hint of truffle, and the spinach was so disgusting I had to spit it in my napkin, My son's steak was cooked properly, but in both cases, the meat so tough it was inedible. For dessert I ordered the pecan tart, and I have question? Where was the jack hammer to get thru the crust. In other words, teh crust was so hard, it couldn't be penetrated with a fork or spoon. SO I ate the meat of the pie, but COME ON, how hard is crust to get right? (pun intended) My husband ordered the crabmeat macaroni and cheese with truffle, and there was not one hint of truffle. Some stuff they did get right: Iceberg wedge salad (wow,tough to cook), my friend enjoyed her short ribs. For 3 adults and 4 kids, with no alcohol, the check was $320, and the food was horrible. Wow great little spot in tarrytown! Amazing food, ambiance and service. The handmade pastas are so delectable. The fava bean ravioli is perfectly cooked, so buttery, with a smooth creamy filling. Fries are cooked perfectly and so fresh. The gnocchi is fluffy and airy- the way gnocchi is meant to be. The roasted veggie with goat cheese panini has amazing fresh flavorful bread and the veggie-cheese combo is light, tasty and will leave you meat free and loving it. There's also a great selection of beer and wine. Service is stellar and the place is fantastic. A perfect spot for a birthday dinner! Oh and dessert is also killer- which is rare for me to find a good dinner plus dessert location. The creme brûlée had a perfect thin crispy caramelized not burnt crust and the under layer was not oily with a great consistency. I'm about to get real technical with this restaurant. The waiter came by after our drinks came, and he took our food order. 5 minutes later, he came back and told my friend there was no Chicken pate. So she got a beet salad instead for her appetizer. No problem- she liked the beet salad when she had it previously. Note: I had told the waiter during our initial ordering I wanted no tomatoes on my wedge salad and sub red onion instead. When the appetizers came out my friend actually got the Chicken pate. I also received the wedge salad with tomatoes. I immediately told the waiter to switch out the tomatoes on the wedge salad for red onions. When he brought back the wedge salad, the red onions showed up on the plate with tomato seeds- evidence the tomatoes were just picked off and no attention to detail was made to excuse the minor error. The dressing was good, although I was irritated to look down and see tomato seeds on my salad plate. Halfway through our eating our appetizers, our waiter set foot out of the restaurant. My friend and I looked confused. The busboy kept asking my friend if she was done with her pate when she was clearly eating it. The perplexed but kind lady owner asked me if I wanted another iced coffee ( I was already high strung enough that one more sip of coffee would have turned me into a screaming Courtney Love at the 1995 mtv vma's.) As the entrees arrived, my friend had a beet salad placed in front of her. She seemed confused and irritated to the point she explained to the lady owner she ordered a beet salad to replace the chicken pate. She kept the beet salad and our server was still no where in sight. For my dish, I ordered the burger medium and received it well done. The fries were soft and rather worm like. When we had our check sent off to be split evenly by two cards, it took 15 minutes. Apparently something was not working with the card machine but no attempt was made to communicate this. I cant believe it took us this long to come here! We were planning to revisit the twisted oak but thank goodness they were closed because we would have never found the Tarry Tavern! I had the braised short rib over a creamy perfectly done mushroom risotto and my wife had the NY strip steak cooked perfectly as requested! She is not an easy to please kind of woman and she said this was the best steak she has ever eaten in Westchester! I almost forgot to mention the stupendous Octopus we had with crispy garlic potatoes and arugula! I can't say enough about the food here. In these hot summer months, my favorite dining experience has been sitting outside Tarry Tavern for a Mojito (the mint we had was grown fresh right outside the restaurant). Two of my favorite dishes are The Beet Salad appetizer and the Amish Chicken entree. Recently, I tried the Vegetable Lasagna and its up there as well. Here is the difficult part about reviewing Tarry Tavern, the food is Exceptional...I have not one complaint about the food. What is truly unfortunate was my experience with the service. We went for a friends birthday with reservations as it was a Friday night, stood there for ten minutes completely unacknowledged as the owners, buss staff and waiter walked by us back and forth. They had easily a staff of 10 or more when I was there but only one gentleman was taking orders for the whole restaurant. When I asked for a drink menu I was told that they didn't have one. We didn't get food menus for over 25 min until we were able to grab the hostess. What makes this so frustrating is the fact that the food was superb. Their food was well balanced, comforting and perfectly cooked. I will go there again because of the meal however dread the idea of dealing with the service again. read more

The service here -- including the owner Henry -- was outstanding: attentive, sincere and second in the overall greatness of the meal only to the pork cheeks I had for dinner. The bread (often the mark, or not, of a thoroughly quality joint) was epic and close-to if not actual perfection; and when I asked for olive oil to join my second round of it (note: I rarely "carb out" like this)... they brought me an entire bottle of it. Nice. A willingness to seat me outside (especially as the only person out there and dining solo, at that) only scored further points from/for both me and the Tavern: a passer-by fully stopped in their tracks to admire and ask me about my cocktail, and rightfully so; the thing was well-executed, for sure... and tasted as good, if not better, than it looked. I'm giving this place two stars with in mind that the food was quite good. The service though, absolutely took away from the meal. We asked the waiter if one dish was vegetarian, to which he responded yes. When the dish was served, it had two large slices of fish. Now, it's no big deal that this happened. Mistakes are made, and that's being human. We called the waiter over and asked what the dish was, to which he snapped back, it's what you ordered. A simple question deserves a simple response, but please, chill on the attitude. We asked for him to take the dish back, since it was not what was represented. He gave us hell with that. I have worked in the food industry and as anyone who works in it is told, "The customer is always right". We did not give him attitude nor were we rude regarding the mistake. For dessert, we ordered a pecan pie. We received an apple pie... We called the waiter over and again he snapped back, that's what you ordered... We double checked his order slip and it indeed said, pecan pie. Another waiter came and explained that they substituted our pecan pie with an apple pie, since they ran out. See, there's no problem with that, no attitude needed, and advanced notice of the lack of pecan pie would have been appreciated. If we had an apple allergy, that'd be a whole other issue. The manager came by and apologized for the waiter's attitude and said the desserts were on the house. At least it ended with the restaurant trying to save face. With that said, the food that was brought to us, was actually quite good. I'd recommend the mac n' cheese with crab meat to anyone who is willing to test the service. Additionally, I'd recommend the Duck with Risotto. That too was very good. I'm not willing to give it another go. I sugar coated the experience, so imagine how bad it really was. Tarrytown is home to a number of fantastic restaurants but the crown jewel of the bunch is the Tarry Tavern. Why? Aside from the insanely fresh, seasonal and exceptional menu (there is literally not a bad dish or even mediocre dish to choose from), the family feeling, yet high end and attentive service makes the experience. For example: I am locked out of my apartment, and this is the first place I thought to go in town while waiting for my fiance to get home. Dinner, desert and a few glasses of wine later, I'm seated comfortably, well taken care of and working on 9-5 related tasks in the best "office" environment I could ask for. I will def not be coming back to this restaurant. I know nothing about their food and after tonight, don't care to know about it. I came in with my 3 year old son and my two girlfriends for dinner. There was no one in the restaurant besides the bartender and two waiters. I even asked the bartender if they were open and he said yes. I told him we wanted a table and he asked if we would like to sit outside but we didn't want to so they put us at a table in the corner. We all sat down. A few minutes later the waiter came to us without even bringing us menus and said that there was going to be a party and they wanted to know if my son was going to behave because they did not want us to disrupt the party. And he asked again if we wanted to sit outside. Without hesitation I got up and said thank you but we are leaving. For the few very short minutes we were there, my son sat quietly next to me. So because there is a young child, they automatically assume that he will not "behave". No thank you, I will take my business to a more family friendly place. Visited the restaurant last this past weekend after a day trip to Sleepy Hollow cemetery. There were 4 of us and it was around 2:30ish for lunch, so we had the place almost to ourselves. Walked in and we were seated right away. Looked over the menu and was pleased to see a lunch menu offered. We ordered diet cokes and water and then put in our order. We got a burrata app to start and ordered salads and a soup for our entree. The buratta was really delicious and the fruit and beet puree that accompanied it give it a nice touch. My cobb salad was very fresh, and the cesar salad dressing was amazing. It had a nice tangy bite to it. After only having salads for our main we decided dessert was necessary. We had the creme brulee. Awesome. And the bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. Again, awesome. The reason for 3 stars is due to service. Everything seemed to take a while, especially since there was only 1 other table in the place. We only ordered salads which should not take long to prepare since there is little to no cooking involved. We noticed another table received bread but we did not. And also, it was freezing in there. I really enjoyed my food at Tarry Tavern, but I must admit I was a bit taken back by customers at the bar and their outrageous, inappropriate behavior. Here I am trying to enjoy a nice dinner of Atlantic Salmon, and literally every word out of these men's mouths was "F$#%", "MOTHER F#$^&@", and the like. Thank goodness there weren't any children present! I'm surprised that the employees and management allowed this behavior in the restaurant, but for all I know those men could have been employees/management. If I could have enjoyed my meal in peace, I would have stayed for drinks and/or dessert. 4 starts for the food and 1 star for the atmosphere equals 2.5 stars. We just love everything about Tarrytown, and are working hard to try each eatery in this bucolic Village. To celebrate our eldest daughter's 26th birthday we ventured to the Tarry Tavern, and we are glad we did. This Portuguese/Italian American restaurant offers a flavor profile aims to pls those that want something more than traditional fare. As is custom at the Adler dinner table we ordered a wide array of appetizers and soups. The Burrata Cheese, Roasted Potato Gnocchi, Iceberg Lettuce Wedge w/ Blue-cheese, Butternut Squash Soup w/ spiced pumpkin seeds, Ribollita Soup & Butternut Squash & Pear Ravioli on a walnut purée all made our discerning cut with the Ribollita Soup & Gnocchi making to the top. Dinner was chock full of pleasant offerings such as Pan-Seared Atlantic Salmon on a bed of lentils, parsnips, apples & brown butter. Mac & Cheese (sorry Kraft) but don't bother anymore & a vegetarian Ricotta Pasta w/ an eclectic variety of vegetables to die for. Another underrated Tarrytown dining option - maybe I've been overwhelmed with the high prices of the city but I was really, really impressed with this restaurant. The food wasn't necessarily Bernardin-worthy but then it wasn't trying to be either. They still had a great selection of beer and an even better one of wine. Ok one small complaint on the drinks - they charged me $7 for a draft yuengling. Really? That seems a bit much but its still a small complaint. Really liked the gnocchi which the waitress suggested and the wine was far and above its price point as far as quality. The wife and I shared a few dishes and nothing came up short although if I had to weigh on on a particular one it would be the octopus with fingerling potatoes. Very impressive. So glad to have found this place! We were in Tarrytown on Saturday for an amazing show at the Tarrytown Music Hall and were blown away by the quality of the food and service! The place was packed with a line out the door and had an incredible high energy, NYC feel. My friends had suggested we try this place and they were totally right. Thanks Jeff:-) We started off with the best octopus I have ever had in my life! My wife said her squash soup was to die for. She also loved her scallops and my pork chop was cooked to perfection. Our server made us feel totally welcome and comfortable even though we were pressed for time because we had a show to attend. It's been a while since I had such a complete, overall, near perfect experience. We even had time to try their bread pudding which our cordial server recommended! This could have been four stars if not for all of the surprises (not the good kind). To start the salad tasted good overall, but the vinaigrette was so faint I wasn't really sure it was there. No biggie, so far still giving a good rating. Then the main course, the other two in our party had excellent meals, duck and steak. My meal was the bucatini. The guanciale caught my eye, since it's not something you get to try everyday. I'm still not sure I have. If it was in the dish I couldn't find it. The next surprise was the unmentioned spice. Now I know variety is the spice of life, but it still burns. By the fifth bite my tongue had enough. Sent it back, they offered me a different choice. No problem. I looked over at the excellent steak next to me and said, "I'll have that, exactly the way she ordered it." Spent the next little bit looking forward to a thick, juicy, medium rare steak. That's not what I got. Surprise! I got a thin, nervy piece of meat cooked black and blue all over (emphasis on the black). Giving a star for each meal they managed to get right.
