The food was well prepared and quite tasty. The music on a early Saturday morning set the perfect mood. A little Stevie Wonder, a little mo-town. A great way to start your day. The best meal I've had in quite a while. The fried chicken was really good. From the moistness of the meat to the spicy batter. Just delicious. The yams were everything you want yams to be: sweet, a little spicy, Nice consistency. But the unexpected star of the dish was the collard greens. I've had quite a few greens dishes in quite a few soul food restaurants, and these are far and away the best. Just...damn! I ate at Taste Kitchen and Bar on 09/2/2023 with 2 other people. The food is good. I had the Taste breakfast. It's good and pretty basic food. (Eggs + bacon + grits OR potatoes). They also come with regular waffles or an up charge of $2 for a specialty waffle. The Taste of Soul which comes with smothered chicken, rice, greens, and cornbread. The music makes you feel that you are at the club. What I didn't like: I changed my order from regular waffles to speciality waffles like a minute after I ordered my food. They brought regular waffles out with the food instead of the speciality waffles we let the server know. They then brought out the specialty waffles. Fine. What they didn't say is that because they brought out the regular waffles first by mistake they had to charge us $8. Most restaurants don't charge you if they make a mistake. 2) There is an EXTRA 4% charge added if you use your card. That is fine and not a problem, BUT there is no sign or writing on the menu that they do this. Most places will let you know that they will be adding an extra fee on top of your food charge before you order. Other than that. Food is good. Service is good. I just didn't like that they charged me extra for the waffles and they didn't tell me before that there is a fee for using a card. I don't think it hurts to inform customers. It might not change what people order, but I think it is nice to know AHEAD of time. read more

Not my first time dining at Taste but first time at this new location. Well it's new to me lol. LOVED it! I had to ask myself why I hadn't been back since my first time trying. It definitely wasn't that I didn't enjoy the food because the food and drinks and happy hour specials were amazing. It had to be because of the parking. It's downtown off Main Street. I was fortunate to snag a parking space off Prairie St which was free I guess after a certain time. I arrived after 6:30pm and when I tried to pay through ParkHouston it said $0 for 12 hours, maximum parking. I did see a $12 lot and then other random street parking on my drive to the restaurant. HAPPY HOUR SPECIALS Monday through Friday $8 frozens, there are other drink deals but I can't remember. $8 for 8 wings and $1 per additional wing (add in increments of 2) $6 lamb chops (jerk or garlic herb) DRINKS I ordered the peach frozen drink and it was veryyyyy good. It had something carbonated in it not sure if it was a wine or sprite but it was a refreshing spin. FOOD JERK LAMB CHOPS I highly recommend this. The $6 special is what lured me in and my server Toni suggested I get the jerk option. She was spot on with her recommendation. It was perfectly cooked at medium temperature how I wanted it and seasoned well. I loved this so much I ordered two more to go and a side of garlic mashed potatoes. GARLIC MASHED POTATOES Nothing award winning but still good. The price is kind of hefty at $7. Any additions like cheese or gravy is an extra $3. At that price point the cheese and/or gravy shouldn't be an extra charge in my opinion. CHICKEN WINGS From their Instagram page I thought the special was $1 per wing. It's only offered after you buy 8 wings for $8 minimum. I highly recommend the spicy ranch (suggested by my waitress Toni) and orange pepper flavors breaded. Sooooo good and crispy and perfectly seasoned. Served with ranch dressing but not needed. I also ordered two mango habanero and I wasn't a big fan of these. TASTE OF SOUL REALLY enjoyed this dish and they give you a ton of food. I ordered dark. Got a leg and thigh fried and in brown gravy atop white rice with collard greens and yams. Chicken was well seasoned which I didn't expect nothing less because I enjoyed the wings so much. Because I wanted to try everything I kept my sides and added BACON GOUDA MAC. What I would do next time is skip the Mac and cheese (I will explain later) and sub the mashed potatoes or try the corn instead of the greens. The greens were kind of bitter. I had to add hot sauce to finish it. Not heavy on the turkey. There is turkey but it's not prominent. I love big visible pieces of turkey throughout my greens and when I received it I had to dig through the greens to see strings of turkey meat sparsely throughout the collard greens. Kind of disappointing. The yams were excellent. Perfect amount of sweetness and still had some firmness. Also comes with a cornbread waffle. Unique way to serve cornbread. It was ok. I would have liked it sweeter and a bit softer/not as dry. It wasn't hard but I love my cornbread sweet and moist. BACON GOUDA MAC Heaping cup of Mac and cheese with chopped bacon on top. It wasn't bad but I am not a fan of a creamy, wet Mac and cheese. I prefer a dry and cheesy Mac and cheese like a macaroni pie. That is my only complaint taste was good though. SERVICE I enjoyed my server Toni. She was attentive, responsive and she provided great suggestions when I asked. She also bagged my items! VIBES I almost didn't come because I had read multiple reviews that mentioned the music was too loud. I actually thought it was a good volume. 90s and early 2000s R&B played (Aaliyah, Mary J Blige, Dru Hill, Isley Bros etc). I was able to take a phone call during my dinner. What I will say is the two tables next to me were talking loud so I couldn't enjoy the music as I would have liked but I don't think their music is intolerably loud or as one reviewer said club loud. VIEWS The restaurant is two stories. I had the perfect seat in the corner to the right when you reach the top of the stairs. Loved the floor to ceiling windows. I can't wait to come back. read more

The Taste Bar was on my list of places to try. Upon entering, we were greeted by one staff member yelling who was extremely rude. She immediately said to get rid of our cups which were only water. After throwing the cups away, we approached and encountered a different staff member who was much more pleasant. We were seated upstairs. Everyone except myself orders the lobster tail and waffles. I had the jerk lamb chops, which were delicious. My cocktail was a French 75- the usual. The food was really good. I tasted the mac and cheese, and it was also delicious. The red velvet waffle tasted like cake, and it was so I fluffy. The service inside was great. It was nice and clean inside. They played smooth r&b and some hip-hop. Sigh. I tried this establishment when it was at a diff location and had an incident there with untidy dealings. I thought I'd give them another try and shame on me for that. The margarita looked better than it tasted, that's for sure. The taste of soul was everything I wanted but served with A SIDE OF SOMEONE ELSE'S HAIR. Now, I was eating my greens and yams, spun my plate around to get busy on the chicken and rice and imagine my surprise when I saw someone else's hair tucked up under there in the rice!! So my date alerts the server who turned his flashlight on using his phone to see it and then just took the plate away and downstairs. I really hate returning food but my hands were tied here. So like 5 mins later a different server, a female, comes back and just sat a plate in front of me without saying a word. So to be honest, the food came out way too fast, I think they just pulled the hair off and rearranged my plate lmaooo. That being said, I nibbled on my sides and took the rest home...because I felt weird about it. The thing is, no one said sorry. No manager spoke to us. Nothing. The inside is really nice. Lots of seating or whatever but would I go back? Hell nah. Would I recommend this business to someone else? Also no. The lack of care and customer service is such a turn off - especially for the prices. It is very basic to expect food without someone else's stuff - hair or otherwise - in your food. Located in a busy downtown area of Houston. The establishment is huge. There's upstairs, downstairs, and outdoor seating. We fell in love with the bar area and the different seating options. So, that's where we opted to sit for our visit. The bartenders were super sweet and informative. They let us know it was Happy Hour and what our options were, if we were interested in any of those drinks. We opted to begin with the Sangria and a Lemon Drop (sub the vodka with tequila). After those drinks we tried the Patron Watermelon Margarita. All the drinks were STRONG! Despite them being strong, they very tasty. It was like you could feel the liquor instantly, but not taste it-if that makes sense. For food I tried the truffle Mac and added lobster. I thought the lobster would be fried, as I had seen in pics but it wasn't. It was a $12 up charge for overcooked, unseasoned lobster crumbles-I was not a fan at all. The Mac was OILY, dry, and flavorless. I could only taste the truffle-no cheese, no other seasoning-NOTHING! The greens were extremely spicy. So spicy I couldn't taste any flavor. Overall, if I wasn't visiting from out of town, I'd probably go back ONLY for drinks and eat elsewhere. It's great for drinks as the music and ambiance is a vibe but the FOOD WAS NOT IT! The food was really good! Greens a little spicy but still really good. The oxtails were really tender, not too salty. The candied yams were great as well, really sweet but that's my style! The lavender drink was strong! Very good and well worth it. The lemon drop can get you buzzed too! The service was pretty good, it was busy on a Friday night so they did good considering. But the vibe was really cool as we waited and I'd definitely come back again because the food and drinks are amazing. I had the braised collard greens, lobster gouda mac & cheese, and ginger caipirinha and my taste buds were not disappointed. The braised greens were perfectly seasoned and so very very delicious. The mac & cheese was also very very good. It's a smallish serving, but please believe you get your money's worth in lobster. I easily could have eaten 2 servings and been completely satisfied. Very rude and condescending... I've come several times each time it's a problem with something with what me or my guests wear. You can't wear shorts skirts or dresses. We are not mormans. This last time I came in a Jean skirt with holes I knew they would say something so I brought my sweater to wrap around my waist. We attempted to go on a Friday night , but 3 hour wait. We then attempted to do brunch on a Saturday morning , and it was a 2 hour wait. So, on Monday morning we arrived 20 mins before they opened and only had to wait additional 10 mins ! Needless to say, get there early! Food: THE LINE AND WAIT MAKES SENSE!! Everything was on point . I picked out the Nashville Hot Chicken and switched out the waffles for the Bacon Mac & Cheese! I don't even know where to start! It all came out hot and ready to consume! The chicken was perfectly seasoned and the Nashville Hot was hot, but in the best way! The Mac and cheese was the part that stole my heart y'all! It was may I say the best restaurant Mac and cheese I have EVER tasted. No lie. Cocktail : I picked out the Peach Cobbler dessert cocktail, and it took me by surprise! It was delicious and perfectly mixed! I'm usually not a big vodka girl, but it paired with their purée in such a way that it literally tasted like peach cobbler. My friend had the Hennessy Breeze which was also mixed well. She said "it did it's job" lol Service: Our server Gia was extremely friendly and attentive! She kept checking on us even after the meal came (y'all know some people leave you hanging at that point) . Also the hostess at the front was nice and welcoming!
