Been here twice, unfortunately won't be back. What a frustrating experience. The staff here doesn't acknowledge customers and seem to avoid making any kind of eye contact with you. After 25 minutes we were finally able to wave someone down for waters. He finally comes back with 1 water (for a table of 3) and quickly scutters off. 20 minutes later with no help, we flag a different person down for a beer and a sake. She asked if we wanted 2 glasses. Yes! Great! Finally someone that wants to help us! Well, the drinks never came. And neither did the waters, or the menu for our AYCE after the first round. They didn't bring half the stuff we ordered on there, either. The restaurant was about half full, and the customers there had frustrated looks on their faces as they were waving their arms around for help. It's too bad because the food is OK. UPDATE: After waving the staff down for our check, they forgot to give me my debit card. I came back the next day and let the employee in the front know that I was there to pick up my card. She yells "I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS!" And walks off. So I'm standing there, ignored by everyone again. I walked over to another employee and let him know I was there for my card, he shrugs and walks away. I'm standing there for a good 10 minutes, confused and frustrated. Such an interesting eating experience. Came in during lunch, and was provided the lunch special in the beginning before I asked for the porridge menu. I never had anything like this before, in which they basically let a porridge base below the steamer, you steam everything that you order in which the juices will combine with the porridge, and when you're done with your entrees, they will then serve you the porridge at the end. They say that it's geoduck season, and never having it yet having heard it multiple times, I caved and ordered a small amount. Ordered the sole with the black bean, and a scallop based porridge. The waiter was very helpful throughout my first time in the restaurant, as she recommended the different pair and combinations of what to order. The porridge cooking process took a while (40 minutes-1 hour) though in the meantime you eat whatever main dish you ordered after they are steamed (about 20 minutes). The porridge is unseasoned, and they provide the seasonings on your table. Once I have it flavored to my liking (added some pepper and soy sauce), it was the richest porridge I have ever eaten. It's mostly just porridge, however all the juices combined creates a very savory flavor. Better yet, the small porridge is enough to probably feed 3-6 people! Price wise is dependent on what you order, though expect to pay quite a bit. My advice is to come in a group so that you can steam more things to make your porridge more flavorful, while keeping the cost down per person. read more

Came here for dinner with the hubby,as part of his birthday dinner. We found parking across the street and it wasn't too busy... it helped that the Warriors game was on. Was promptly seated, menus given. We ended up ordering from their set menu, as there were too many choices and only 2 of us. The set menu came with spare rib and pumpkin for the base. It also came with beef wrapped with enoki mushroom, wood ear fungus spareribs, shrimp stuffed in mushroom, veggies, custard buns, clams, and fish. Once we ordered, the waiters brought the food out and they steam everything for you. Very easy and seamless process, have to say the food was pretty good but I didn't try the razor clams or the queens clams. Definitely bummed about that, a nice and clean restaurant with strange motif for decoration. Here for the food and not the decor. First time at Tastee after my parents had tried other steam kitchens. They had the freshest seafood I'd ever tasted. Reasonable prices for such quality food. Porridge at the end was beyond delicious. Great service too!! They served a special homemade complimentary tea that my whole family loved. They unfortunately said no when my dad asked if there was any for purchase. 10 minutes later, manager came out with a few tea bags for us all of us to bring home!! Very sweet of him. Finally, a local AYCE hot pot place without needing to go to SF or anywhere far. I tried Tastee yesterday at 3pm and did the lunch AYCE hot pot for only $20/person! Super affordable and comes with complimentary milk tea w/ boba. There was only one table occupied when I went, so obviously I was seated immediently. I picked two soup bases, hot & spicy and japanese broth. Highly recommend both, they were very flavorful. All of the items we ordered were super delicious and fresh! There is also a sauce bar so you can customize what you like, love the ponzu sauce. Other than that, the service was decent but nothing spectacular about it. But it was appreciated that they were attentive with water and checking up on us every so often. If you're in the area craving hot pot, this is definitely the place. Although it's not totally the BEST hot pot I have ever had, it still hits the spot when I'm not willing to travel far for hot pot. Will for sure come back :) read more

Strange but good. Once I get the hang of it, I can see myself coming here quite often. Dead smack in the middle of Oaktown's Chinatown, lies this new gem. It is steam oriented cuisine. Which produces very clean and moist food. Every table has a steam cooking vessel built in. It is not quite do-it-yourself because the servers have to program in a time, according to what food is being inserted. So as you're conversing amongst the table, hopefully sipping on beer or sake or tea, you're watching food get steamed before your eyes, through a glass dome that covers the steamer. Once the timer buzzes, the server will pull the food out and insert the next item to steam, and you repeat according to how many items you ordered. So you are munching as you go. The good is everything is so fresh and popping in vibrancy. The bad is it takes time to eat here, because there is a lot of waiting around for things to get cooked. So plan accordingly. Also expect to pay $25+ per person here. A lot of things are market price, so it can get crazy. Special, yes, but there will be a pricetag in tow. Our 4 meats and 2 veggies which can feed 2-3, came out to a little over $70. And we didn't drink alcohol that particular night. Amongst all the steaming going on, the place is quite spacious and modern. Actually the theme of the decor is some Americana road theme, in which I don't know what the tie in was. A route 66 sign, pictures of choppers and modified roadsters adorn the walls. Strange, yes? But it is done in a clean manner, so can't complain too much. But the food is top notch. I only sampled a small portion of the menu, but everything I tried was great. I noticed a strong emphasis on seafood, which is a real natural pair for the steaming method. Some veggies, some dumplings/buns and maybe some chicken. The veggies and dumplings come as is. Steam and eat, maybe some dipping. The meats come dressed which make them unique. Clams- Were so good. You can see each clam pop open through the dome of the steamer. The natural brininess is the star. We had dipping sauce ready, but nobody wanted to ruin the natural sweet/salty taste. Actually we hardly used any sauce for anything. Calamari - was another winner. Tender strips are marinated in a light soy, along julienned peppers and onions. When steamed the flavor penetrated the meat and was so delightful. And the chew, is what I yearn for in a good calamari dish. Scallops - Top notch. They use the larger ones, not the tiny bay versions. Each scallop is topped with what appears to be a little tobiko (tiny fish roe) and osmanthus flower. All the topping did was add a crunchy texture and maybe a little flavor. And a lot of color. Rock Cod - was marinated in black bean sauce. And when steamed produces a very silky texture that made me swoon big time. Interestingly enough nothing came out soggy and bland, which is a common misinterpretation for the steaming method. Tender Greens and Asparagus- The least wow factor because they weren't dressed, so they were super basic. But very vibrant and representative of the vegetable. They also put some broken rice in the bottom of the steaming vessel, so as you cook item by item, it drips and moistens the rice into a rice porridge that you savor at the end. It isn't congee by any means because it lacks the starchy consistency. But it isn't half bad. Unfortunately you're so stuffed at the end that it is hard to eat any more, especially a bowl of hot carbs. Now my main gripe but is a learning angle for me, is in the order at which they steam things. On our outing they steamed all the meats, one by one, in order. At the end, they steamed all the veggies, which we almost forgot about. So the last thing we ate, outside of the porridge, was just plain old steamed veggies. Not exactly going out with a bang. Next time have them do the veggies first, that way, you can munch on those, as you are coursing through the meats. And I noticed that on most of the tables because they wheel all your dishes out in a cart, and all the carts had meats on the top level and veggies on the bottom level. Really interesting concept and I really enjoyed it. I did not feel heavy or bloated after the meal... was this... healthy??? My family also liked it as well. Make reservations and bring your family out for a special night to this place, it is much better when sharing. Everything was served in courses so you may feel a break between each set. I really liked the fish shu mai and the silver cod was also delicious. We ordered the pumpkin porridge as our base and it was sooo good to have at the end. Key for a good seafood place is quality. This place delivers. All of their seafood I tried today was very fresh and good quality. Some of the reviews are not fair at all and here is why. First of all you need to understand what you are eating. You are paying for fresh seafood. Yes it will cost you $40-50 or even $60 per person to have a good meal but that's what you have to pay for good seafood anywhere. Just because it's in Chinatown so you want to pay $30 for all live seafood? Not going to happen. Some people say you are doing all the work because it's just steam. That's the same thing for hot pot. No one complains about that. Don't understand why so many low reviews. Most of them complains about the price. Which makes no sense at all. If you want to spend less, just order more fish. This restaurant is owned by the same owner as Shooting Star Cafe, which you can tell by those purple chairs! This place is definitely more for special occasion since it can get pretty pricey when it comes to ordering fresh seafood. My family ordered a the pumpkin pork rice porridge as the base and a variety of items from the ticking menu. You can tell the seafood here are fresh since they have their own fish tanks which you can see the live seafood inside. We got their dungeoness crab ($28), razor clams ($13), scallops, shrimps, short ribs, chicken, clams ($13), and more. The best of the night we thought were the razor clams and chicken. Razor clams were so fresh, meaty, paired so well with the garlic sauce, very well worth the money! The worst of the night were the scallops. They had NO flavor and you can tell they are just coming from a frozen pack. It's very fun and different experience since we generally are more used to hot pot and kbbq, but never steam pot. However, the portion size is definitely more on the small side and the price are high! If you want to eat the fresh seafood, they are all market price. However, the food is very tasty since they are very focused on fresh ingredients. They also tend to run out of seafood, so don't arrive too late at night. Tried Tastee for the first time this afternoon and I'm in love. The all you can eat hotpot + wagyu lunch is affordable (~$20) and more worth it than your usual Korean all you can eat bbq restaurants. I ordered hot and sour soup as the base for my hotpot and it was so flavorful. Thank goodness it wasn't too spicy, I wouldn't be able to handle it lol. The seafood was fresh and tasted delicious with the soup/ noodles. All the meats were good, especially wagyu and pork belly. Milk tea with boba is included in the all you can eat hotpot and it's UNLIMITED REFILLS for all my milk tea lovers! This review is for AYCE Hot Pot. It's not bad, but nothing stands out either. I mostly eat shabu shabu so I don't enjoy the broth selection they have (I had chicken coconut and mushroom broth). The complimentary boba is also meh. The service is super slow as I waited for more than 20 mins for food to arrive after giving them the checked menu. It's not particularly bad, but for the price, I'd expect something more. At least the lobster ball and fishball with roe are decent. read more

TSK is one of a kind in the Bay Area, that I know of at least. I've been seeing "steamed seafood towers" or "steam potting" from restaurants in Asia circulating social media and TSK seems to be the closest thing you can get here. Side note - The owners here are from Shooting Star. About everything on the menu is cooked by steam. Every table is set up with a steamer with a built in timer. When you first get seated, they serve you a fruity flavored tea and a couple bowls of sauces. I could only make out the ginger scallion sauce. There are also condiments at the table - sweet soy sauce, red vinegar (which was labeled sesame oil), olive oil, and hot sauce. Extra condiments available upon request - green onions, friend garlic bits, pickled jalapeño, and red pepper flakes. The menu could be more clear like specifying if the item is priced per pound or each. It would be nice if there was an intro to the restaurant and instructions on the menu as well like how the steaming works, how the staff will help time the items, etc. The menu is laminated and they give you dry erase makers to select your items. Wish they used wet erase because some items ended up erased as the menu was being passed around! After you order, your items are placed on a cart near your table. They set up the porridge fixings at the bottom of the steam pot, then lay a tray to steam your items on top of that, and then they place a cover on top to keep the heat in. The water that is collected from the steam and juices from your steam pot drips down to cook the porridge while you're eating your steamed food. Service was mostly good throughout the meal. The staff are in control of timing the food, but I could see them forgetting to attend to the timers when the restaurant gets crowded. I would like to return to try different items. read more

Wow, I've never seen anything like Tastee Kitchen before. I think the concept of steaming fresh food right at your table is very interesting, and also quite healthy alternative to your local Chinatown restaurants. The atmosphere is nice, relaxing with cute little car decor. Seems out of place at first but it comes together quite nice! Lots of Tvs around to show news, sports, shows. Music. Love that they also have a bar! And you can order some good BBQ if you decided to grab a quick bite and drink. They have delicious draft beers from IPA to kolsch style. Sake and wine! All in all I totally recommend the Crab, Long neck clams, Shrimp. Oooh the Okra is really good and love how everything comes together at the end for the porridge. Very interesting experience. It's similar to hot pot, but everything is steamed. Underneath the steamer you can choose from a variety of porridges to cook while you steam your food on top. The waiter told me that the purpose of having the porridge cook at the bottom is so that the juices from whatever it is that you are steaming leaks down to the porridge to give it extra flavors. We ordered fresh scallops on a half shell (which isn't on the menu, the waiter recommended it to me after seeing that I had marked scallops on the menu) for $10 each, spotted prawns for $38 lb (they only sell by lbs), oysters $2.50 each, royal mussel ($12 each), salt and pepper spareribs, minced pork on tofu, and clams. The seafood was pretty fresh and you get to pick from a list of sauces to go with your food. At the end of the meal, you get to eat the porridge you've been steaming the entire time. It is recommended that you sit there for at least 40 mins for the porridge to be throughly cooked. Overall, I had a great experience, the servers were attentive and they steam most of your food for you. A friend and I just finished dinner AYCE here. Most people love AYCE because you eat until you're stuff. What we like about AYCE is variety, since we're both very indecisive and don't want to commit to eating large quantity of the same thing. I noticed on the menu that you have to pay for sauces. On the table all they provide is vinegar, olive oil, soy sauce, chili sauce, white pepper and salt. Right off the bat when we ordered, I asked the waiter if we could have small portions or even half portions of each item, he said that it's fine. Food start coming, we started off with marble beef, cooked in less than a min because it's sliced so thinly. Then an order of garlic shrimp which came with 5 shrimp. Then our order of corn came, it was piled up like a mountain with around 12 pieces. When the waiter came by I asked him that can we just have half the order of corn. There's no way that the 2 of us would finish all that corn. That's when he started to give me attitude, saying that is how much a order is. I then said, ok I see, but that's still too much, can we just cook half of that for now. He then exploded, "well then why'd you order it?!" He slammed down the plate and walked off. My friend and I just sat there, completely shocked. He avoided our table for the rest of the night. Another waiter comes by and kept quiet as she cooked the other food. She was nice enough listen to my request by giving me half order of items. We were able to sample more items. Food here is either too salty or completely bland. The only thing that we felt were worth eating were: Garlic Shrimp, Xiao Long Bao, Liu Sha Bao and corn. Which are not worth paying for AYCE to eat. Everything else were not memorable what so ever: Cuttlefish, bland with the texture of rubber band. Marble beef was way too salty. Frog had no flavor all you tasted was sichuan chili oil. Clam over chicken was salty. Fish balls was tasteless and crumbled under your chopsticks. Beef balls had weird texture and no flavor. Lamb/chicken wing/chicken gizzard skewers were all extremely dry. Pork Rib and Pumpkin congee at the end had no flavor. For the price of $25.99 per person, you're much better off eating somewhere else where the waiter doesn't give you attitude. I came here a few days ago with my boyfriend around 5-5:30 and luckily we found parking across the street. We came specifically for the all you can eat hot pot and it was definitely an experience. They had complimentary boba (super good for it being free) and little robots going around the restaurant. It's a big open space with plenty of tables and table room. We went on a sunday so it was $38 per person but usually it's $36 per person on weekdays. The food was great, we got super full off of everything. My boyfriend got the hot and spicy broth and didn't really like the flavor but he liked the amount of spice. I got the satay broth and it was alright, not the best but not the worst. This place has a myriad of options, so you're guaranteed to find something you would want to put in your hot pot. Our soup base was one lamb soup and one spicy soup. We ordered a bunch of things at once since they gave a pretty small portion size for each item. They also provided free boba milk tea to everyone. Everything tasted deliciously, and we had a very fulfilling meal (we stayed for around two and a half hours). However, personally, I would love this place even more if they had fresher ingredients. This place has an amazing sauce bar, and I highly recommend their signature sauce. However, I am taking a star off for the quality of service. Our main waitress was very nice and friendly, but she was also understandably very busy. The other servers that interacted with us were not as patient and attentive, and often ignored or forgot our requests. First time I tried this place was for my MIL's birthday a year ago (prior pandemic). Never really tried a seafood steam type place other than in korea so this one was a first for me. I have nothing to compare this place to, but it wasn't too bad when we went. Parking is hard because it is in Chinatown, but you can always park at the Renaissance plaza. This is the place to go for really fresh seafood at a reasonable price. My favorite thing to get is the seafood set menu for 4 people (which can easily feed 5-6). The razor clams are a must. Everything is steamed to perfection and at the end you're rewarded with delicious congee with blue crab. It's an asian-immigrant parent pleaser for sure because of the quality to price ratio. Plus, there's a variety of dipping sauces and seasonings (e.g. cilantro, garlic, ginger) so everyone can salt the food to their own preference. I haven't tried the hot pot yet since I figured I can get that elsewhere. The chicken, beef, etc. here is nothing to write home about because, even for a steam enthusiast like me, there are better ways to cook meat. read more

To celebrate two of us getting new jobs (hooray!), my friends and I met up for dinner at Tastee Steam Kitchen. The concept of steaming food you'd normally put in a hotpot was new to us and the menu was incredibly overwhelming. There were way too many options to consider. It took us 20 minutes to figure out how and what to order. Side note - they also have normal hotpot now but your whole group has to order it as it is all you can eat. Anyway, we selected the pork rib and pumpkin porridge base (should've gotten the small version) and lots of plates of things to steam on top of it My favorite was the pork balls over egg tofu, which we affectionately nicknamed "pork cupcakes." We ate everything with the same sauces you usually have with hotpot and it was tasty (er, tastee) and healthy. Even with a bottle of wine, dinner came out to be only $20 per person. this is prob the best late night spots i've ever been to! came here randomly w my bf at like 11pm and it was empty, we always saw it but never tried it cos it looked bunk from the outside but it's def a gem the space is huge, the decor is dope and very american-taiwanese-ish if that makes sense. plenty of flatscreen tvs to watch games they have a sauce bar which is prob our favs. i mixed mine with the house sauce, half garlic, and alittle chili soy sauce for a kick. mixed my bf sauce w xo sauce, garlic, chili, and green onions. we put this sauce on errrrythaaang and it was fire the concept is nothin like ur boring restaurants. u can choose the option of hot pot or steam and we chose steam. we got the fish, surf clam, and porridge. you HAVE TO put the sauce in everythannnnng and it tastes sooo much better. they steam everything for u and the drippings fall to the bottom where the porridge is being made right in front of u. it's like a chinese benihana's. they set the timer and when it beeps, they serve it to u. imagine if that place was packed and everyone's table jus beeping like crazy overall i have nothing bad to say about this place. will be coming back more often w more people read more

The food is really wonderful. Don't go at busy hour (7pm), all the steaming takes a long time and we waited for quite a while. Be prepare that you are going to pay a LOT, yes they are not outrageously expensive, actually quite reasonable, like $11 for flat noodles with beef stew, $16 for 1 lb of shrimp, this is NOT a typical restaurant that you eat stir fried food (with lots of veggies) and a lot of rice. So expect $50/pp. The taste? Damn good, this is what fresh food, especially seafood, is all about. I personally don't like much about seafood, smear at the small shrimp (I usually only eat lobster and prawns but their lobster is indeed expensive, that tells you how "unfresh" you get at normal restaurants) but even that was quite good. Steam places the most important emphasis in freshness and ingredients, essential to the Cantonese, anything less so you will notice immediately with the taste of the food (our blue crab soup turns out wasn't that spectacular though as steam soup base and congee it was wonderful), like a sushi that has been left there for 1 hour. And you think fried rice is their thing huh. Are we a fan? Yes. But that $50/pp can't make this fan a frequent customer, it is indeed way too much. read more
