Found this place while looking for a tasty fondue on a cold day - our research led us to Taureau! We really enjoyed both the Truffle cheese fondue and the meat which was really high quality. Reservations were made via Resy, and we arrived at the right time, which is key when you're dealing with a small restaurant. No waiting around. The staff were attentive, but not over-bearing. The ambience of Taureau is defined by warm lighting, quiet to moderate conversation, and casual romantic touches that make Taureau perfect for date night. Our waiter promptly came and took our order. We ordered a bottle of champagne and the three course prix fixe with cheddar monterey cheese fondue, the vegetable broth for the meat course with two sides of filet mignon, and the dark chocolate fondue. The cheese fondue comes with unlimited croutons and salad but we also ordered additional sides of bacon, salami, pear, and potato. When our cheese fondue came in its large cauldron we were dumbfounded by how we were going to finish it in addition to our next two courses. When we got the chance to dip our food into the cheese, we realized that the cheese was not in the cauldron but was in a metal container fitted in the cauldron. The cauldron housed a double boiler that prevents the cheese from burning. Despite the fact that we were bamboozled, there was more than enough cheese for two people to share. The cheese course is not overly heavy, greasy, or salty but was still rich and flavorful. This means you can have large amounts of cheese without being overwhelmed. The croutons are perfect to dip into the cheese because you have a nice crunch with warm melted cheese. Then you can have the salad as a palette cleanser for your next cheese dipped crouton. The bacon, salami, potato, and pear also paired really well with the cheese, particularly the bacon and pear. While the pear combination sounds strange, it is sweet relief from the savory goodness of the cheese (credit to our waiter!). After devouring the cheese, we were presented with sizzling vegetable broth and a side of four sauces for our filet mignon. This experience reminded me of chinese hotpot but with a western spin. The filet mignon is dipped in the sizzling vegetable broth for a few minutes to cook to desired doneness and then dipped in one of the four sauces: truffle, spiced gravy, aoili, and dijon mustard. The filet mignon was delicious and the taste varied with the dipping sauces so we weren't stuck with the same flavor for a whole course. Last up was the dark chocolate fondue served with a platter of marshmallows, strawberries, bananas, pears, apples, and cake. The dark chocolate fondue was the perfect bittersweet and balanced end to our meal and paired well with all the platter of fruit and sweets. The service was amazing. The waiters were very attentive and always asked if we wanted extra croutons/drinks/food. Bottle service was top notch. This place is great if you love CHEESE! I went with a big party and we shared 3 pots: Devil's Whiff, Old Swiss, and Perigord. My personal favourite was the Perigord. Went to Taureau for dinner last night and left feeling disappointed and ripped off. I do not understand how this place has so many good reviews. The food is terrible. We ordered the 3 course pre-fix of cheddar-monterey for cheese, red wine (which we ended up switching to the olive oil) for the meat, and the dark chocolate for dessert. The cheese had no flavor. No tanginess, no sharpness. The croutons and salad were the best part of the first course but the fondue didn't taste like anything. We ordered a combination of sides to also dip into the cheese. The broccoli and potatoes were steamed vegetables, no salt or flavor or anything. The cured bacon was incredibly tough to chew. Taureau does seem to give everyone massive portions on their tiny plates, but other than the bread, salad, and bottle of wine we had, the first course was not good. The two meats we chose were the filet mignon and the hangar steak. Again, Taureau does not skimp on the portions. The server came by with the red wine broth and told us how to cook the meats once the broth was boiling: 15 seconds for medium rare, 30 for medium, and well done beyond that. Nothing cooked in 15 seconds, in fact nothing cooked in 45+ seconds. We switched to the oil because we were having issues with the red wine broth. Again, we had to leave meat much longer than anticipated to fully cook it inside. The meats were not marinated or seasoned, just raw. The aioli dipping sauce was the only thing that gave it flavor. We probably should've left then, but kept assuring ourselves that chocolate fondue couldn't be messed up and dessert would be fine. At this point, I think our server could tell we weren't having the best time so we were poured a free glass of wine. We had the dark chocolate for dessert. It also unbelievably had zero flavor. The "seasonal" fruits were fine, pears and apples were a bit of an odd choice for chocolate fondue. It was unreal how flavorless the chocolate was. We ended up eating most of the fruit just on its own and were happy to leave. I had absolutely no issues with the service at Taureau. We had reservations, were a few minutes late, and were seated promptly. The servers were friendly and helpful when they sensed we weren't having the best time. My husband, friend, and I have been coming here for my friend's birthday for fondue for 8 years and are never disappointed. It has stayed consistently great, and we don't plan on changing our tradition any time soon. We have even attempted other fondue spots and Taureau has stayed our personal favorite. The servers are kind and knowledgeable, the space is clean and aesthetically appealing, and of course all of the cheese selections are amazing. We usually get the perigord (has truffles), but we've also enjoyed Old Swiss and Soprano as well. But the our absolute favorite is actually not on the menu anymore: Devil's Whiff. It's the Soprano but with wine and red pepper. Sometimes it can be more wine-y than pepper-y (yes those are technical terms!), but either way it remains our favorite! The last couple times we've gone the server has asked the chef who was able to make this oldie but goodie for us. We WERE slightly disappointed that they've also taken the fennel sausage off the menu, but we also enjoy the chorizo, so it wasn't that big of an issue for us, especially when we usually go hard on french pickles anyway! As for dessert, its dark chocolate for us all the way. Their dessert spread of apple, pear, strawberry, marshmallow, and pound cake is perfect. My husband always said he wished there was a brownie option, but he's a huge chocoholic, so chocolate on chocolate is his thing. Thank you Taureau for making our son's 18th birthday celebration so memorable! When we asked him what he wanted for his dinner he adamantly said fondue so I checked out Yelp and found Taureau. We had an early reservation at 5 because we were going to see Chicago. We were the only patrons when we walked in. After getting the rundown on how the dinner worked we were ready to dive into some cheese. We had 4 with us so we chose two different cheeses. We had the Smoked Dutch and the Soprano. OMG the cheese was so delicious! So many flavors going on in my mouth and all of them wonderful. Next we moved onto the entrees with everyone choosing filet. The broth is either oil or wine. We chose both and loved them but the oil broth stole my heart! For dessert we had the milk chocolate with an array of pears, apples, marshmallows, and cake. It was the best fondue chocolate I've ever had! The restaurant made our son a dessert with homemade cream puffs sandwiched with homemade ice cream and whipped cream. It was drizzled with their chocolate sauce. Our son said it was the best dinner he's ever had and didn't stop thanking us the entire night. My friend and I did the Prix Fixe option, which is a three-course fondue meal of cheese, meat, and dessert. My ONLY negative was that our service between courses was extremely slow. It took a good 3+ hours for us to have our full meal. But in good company and amazing food, it was still well worth it. For the first course, we had a truffle oil cheese that was just spectacular, with a side of salami and their unlimited croutons and salad. The second course we had filet mignon and pork tenderloin that you cook briefly in a broth of your choosing (we chose the red wine broth). If you can, I'd get two servings of the filet mignon because it is SO GOOD. And for the third course, we had dark chocolate fondue with an array of marshmallows, fruits, and cake. Absolutely amazing. Slightly disappointing experience overall - my two dining partners and I agreed that we would have preferred skipping the second course altogether. Course 1 was straightforward enough. We ordered the truffle and spicy fondue, and stuck with the offered salad and croutons. The croutons were a little toooo tough for my tasting - I wouldn't have minded crusty French bread - but if you stuck them in the cheese for long enough, they would soften up. We probably would have ordered some other sides to dip if we realized what was coming up. At the beginning of course 2, they took away our cheeses! We were disappointed, especially my vegetarian friend, because now he was eating steamed veggies. No joke, that was the choice for vegetarians - three steamed veggies. Those should have at least been presented with the cheese. While my filet mignon was fine, there really was no flavor added by either the red wine broth or the olive oil, and the dipping sauces were not good. By the end, we were ready for dessert. Course 3, we got the milk chocolate and dark chocolate dips. The dark chocolate was a bit grainy, actually, but I enjoyed both of them. We chugged onto the second course with filet mignon and hanger steak in canola oil. It was good but not as good as the first course. I thought the meats were a little too greasy for an already cheese-lined stomach. I dropped a piece of meat on the floor by accident but wasn't as devastated as I should have been. The dessert course tied with the cheese course. I'm not usually a dessert person, and not a huge fan of chocolate. But something about the chocolate fondue won me over. Our server saw us enjoying it so much that he was nice enough to refill our chocolate AND the fruits/marshmallows!!! Service: impeccable! What can be more romantic than a nice dim lit fondue dinner? Not much. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner and it was romantic, filling and fun. Taureau is a BYOB place so you can bring some nice bottles of wine to pair with your fondue. We chose the pre fixe of $37 a person, which comes with salad and croutons, your choice of cheese fondue, 2 choices of meat, choice of fondue for the meat and finally the chocolate fondue with fruit plate. We chose the Soprano cheese and ordered a side of potatoes to dip in other than croutons. The cheese is thick and creamy, perfect for the dips but I would like a little more. We picked pork chops and skirt steak as our choice of meat and dipped in canola oil. At first, it sounded really greasy but it turned out just right. The meat came pre-seasoned and they also gave us 4 dipping sauces. Then, we picked dark chocolate fondue to dip our fruit and marshmallow. I wish there was more chocolate! We were satisfied by the end of it. It is a little pricey but the service was very good and food is excellent. It is perfect for a group dinner or a date. read more
