I walked right past this place. It's in the basement of the building. We were greeted by a super friendly hostess that went out of here way to find us a nice booth. I'll keep this sweet and short. Atmosphere and service were great. Flank steak was fantastic - perfectly cooked and incredibly flavourful. The crispy wings? Not really crispy, but very intriguing spicy flavour. The yogurt sauce was necessary to tame the spice. The baguette and butter were ok, but nothing special. But the big disappointment? The pot pie... the crust was good, but the filing was soup. Literally soup. The base was a velouté, but a velouté, one of the great mother sauces, is usually a foundation for a spectacular sauce. This, sadly, was not. I wish they had mentioned it would be soup as I was really craving a heavy thick gravy filling... or a decadent suprême. We stumbled upon this place desperately looking for a place that wasn't crowded and wasn't fast food. It is a cute tavern nestled below the street level walking distance from the Hotel del Coronado. I enjoyed the tavern atmosphere and the ability to people watch while eating dinner. It's dimly lit and cozy. We didn't expect too much, so we weren't terribly disappointed. The service wasn't bad and the food was pretty average. The Cobb Salad wasn't bad. The Grilled Salmon wasn't terrible. We didn't get food poisoning and we didn't have to wait forever for our food. Not much to complain about. If we're in the area, we would probably consider coming back for a drink or a quick meal. read more

Whilst I'm not your typical "America" who thinks bigger is always better pertaining to food and vehicles... All you can eat buffets and Super Jumbo Meal, Super Size me please!!!! There should be a balance between good tasting food and portion, Not left to be wondering.... Is there something more???.... As you walk away and you are left still hungry after paying a hefty price for a meal. The cocktails selection seemed diverse and appropriate for a beach community, based on the refreshing themes. It's a shame when good food and impressive drinks are combined with horrible service. This restaurant looked great and their food was presented well and tasty. Their drink list was amazing. It's been awhile since I found a drink menu that had multiple drinks I would want. I mean, they use Hangar 1 and Hendricks in their featured cocktails for God's sakes. Again, I went with a drink that I could have made at home - muddled cucumbers, Hendricks, fresh lime juice and simple syrup...but there's just something about having someone else make it for you. Delicious. But how long did it take me to get my Muddled Cucumber Collins? Let's see...I was with a party of 7 and 6 drinks came out after about ten minutes. The last drink (my drink) came out about twenty minutes after that. My sweet potato fries came out long before my drink did. What's up with that! We had to ask the server TWICE to check up on my drink. I was all set to cancel my order when it finally came...without a straw. Sigh. Since my boyfriend had already finished his drink by this time, I took his straw. All in all, it was kind of a disappointing experience. They wouldn't let us have a table, despite empty tables along the back wall. They said they were saved for reservations. At 3PM? Right. Lucky for them, they have one of the best drink menus I've seen in a long time. Their Perfect Margarita is EXACTLY how my boyfriend likes his...and did I mention the Hangar 1 already? Stopped by The Tavern on the way to the theatre and only had about 45 minutes to spare. I sidled up to the bar and ordered a Salty Dog and an order of the Beef Sliders. Let's start with the drink. I normally don't love a salty dog because bottled/canned grapefruit juice has a sour/bitter flavor. The Tavern fresh squeezed their grapefruit juice and the result is a slightly sweet salty dog with a fresh citrus flavor. It was a perfect refreshment from the heat. The sliders (two come with your order) are chock full of meaty goodness. The beef is fresh and tasty and perfectly cooked to medium doneness, loaded with bacon jam and topped with a healthy slice of buttery Brie. A cup of tasty fries and ketchup and it was just what I needed to tide me over until dinner. The bartender was awesome as well. Very knowledgeable. read more

The Tavern is a nice unpretentious restaurant in a city that has a few of the other kind. The atmosphere is very casual, and just a bit on the noisy side. The service was quite good, and in fact, the owner came to our table to chat for a while. I ordered the Fish and Chips ($15) and found the meal to be very satisfying. The fish was very tender and flaky with a light batter. The meal came with a scoop of pretty good creamy cole slaw, literally in a pewter scoop. The fries were placed in a water glass lined with a napkin and had a light, sweet taste about them, although they were quite salty. A container of ketchup and one of mayo were also included. Mayo, not tarter sauce or aioli. All in all, a good meal. My wife ordered the Angus Beef Sliders ($10), and two came on a plate with fries in a water glass and a container of ketchup. She thought the sliders and fries were excellent. We had sides of Brussels Sprouts ($6) and a Beet dish. The Sprouts were very good, although I've had better elsewhere. The Beets were astonishingly good, and I don't even like beets ! There's some magic in the kitchen, methinks. One observation: We almost always have leftovers to take home. Not this time, as the portions were small. I would not hesitate to recommend The Tavern to friends and family. We plan to come back and take advantage of their Happy Hour one of these fine days. Our last night in California and after a late start out for dinner, this was just about the only place still open on Orange Ave. OK, it is kind of Spartan looking inside. Sort of looks like a tavern that our much elders would hang out in-----oh yeah, it is called The Tavern. We started with the Mac N Cheese and it was really good. The Iceberg wedge was good too although I have seen larger renditions of this dish. The blue cheese dressing was only so-so. My wife and I both had the roasted chicken while our friends had halibut tacos and chicken pot pie. The roasted chicken was very good and the tacos were said to be very good. The chicken pot pie came out extremely hot and never quite satisfactorily cooled down. Our server Lucas was a very interesting character and added much to the evening's enjoyment. He speaks in an interesting almost soothing tone, kept calling us Friend, and subtly tried to sell us every item on the menu. No pressure but he operated in a fascinating manner. So happy we finally tried the tavern tonight! We were skeptical because of the reviews but, boy were we wrong. Our server Sean/ Shawn (sp?) was super attentive. He made us feel like old friends rather than that he was doing a job. We really enjoyed him and the ambiance of The Tavern. We had a few cocktails to start and I definitely recommend trying the pear whiskey sour. For an appetizer we had the mussels which were the best in Coronado!!!!!!! (*order the baguette to soak up the sauce, thank me later). The flat iron steak was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. I just wish they had options for the sides. Mash instead of fingerling potatoes- green beans instead of mix veg- maybe they do it just wasn't offered.. Either way the food was great! I wanted to be healthy, so I ordered the brocolini and the brussel sprouts. :/ Brussel Sprouts were DRENCHED in Balsalmic. Brocolini was al dente, so that's good, but salty somehow! To be fair, I am trying to eat healthy in a place called 'The Tavern', but I really feel the healthy food, if offered, should remain healthy. The service was great though! My friend felt her french fries were too salty, so they remade them for her. All in all a VERY cute location with GREAT atmosphere, but even if they list healthy food, it's probably prepared "bar food" style. I totally screwed up on that one - should have gone for something that really showed their skill. The Fish was just OK - the Brigantine was better. Love love this place!! We were in town for our yearly trek to Comic-Con and if any of you have been to Comic-Con then you know it is a very long hot sweaty (FUN) time. We were in need of a cold beer and some good grub! We left our hotel and started into town in search of such a place! We found this place near our hotel (walkable from Del Coronado) and decided to check it out. It is a dark sort of restaurant (lighting-wise) and the food is very "pub-like (wood, English). We had a large group (20 of us) and they were able to accommodate us all easily with their long wooden tables. This was key for us since we were there on a business trip and wanted to have a fun team experience together. We ordered some steaks, chicken and burgers but the brussell sprouts (yes I said it!) were outstanding! We ended up ordering several orders of them which is a first for me! The food was pretty good presentation-wise and it tasted very good. However, what really good out were there servers. They were incredibly fun and even remembered us a couple of nights later when we went back to eat there again! It may seem like a "given" that service should be good but it is so rare these days that when you have really good servers it can make such a great difference! We would definitely go back there when we are back in Coronado. read more

I visited the Tavern September 18th I enjoyed the food at The Tavern. My friend and I were seated outside around 9pm. The weather was perfect. I had the Mac n Cheese for us two to share and it was awesome. It had flavor and very cheesy! I had the soup with the grilled cheese bites and the cheese bites were good. Ben, our waiter, was nice to bring me two additional grilled cheese bites since I told Ben I was a vegetarian and I wonder about what are my options besides just salad. My friend had the halibut tacos which had large halibut piece in each taco. He had to eat it with a fork since they were that huge. I gave my friend a grilled cheese bite because those were delicious too. After eating all of that, we got too full to go for dessert. The options that The Tavern has was the baked cookie with ice cream on top or the root beer float. The cookie sounded good, but way too full. I'll definitely be back when I visit Coronado again!
