They had good drink options and a menu that everyone could find something. I got the salmon and thought it was good but very plain and therefore expensive for what you got. It does feel more like a dive bar than a sports bar to me. And yeah, it's partly because it's below the street, more like a basement, more introverted, and good if you want to be on Orange Ave., but don't want to "feel" like you're on Orange Ave. I only ordered an IPA, so I can't comment on the drinks. The food is good I guess. The wagyu taco had a nice flavor and the greens with the sauce made it work. I don't think it's actually wagyu, but the word is pretty much meaningless at this point. For the crust, I found it to be way too chewy rather than light and flaky. I couldn't even cut it with my spoon anymore and had to pick up a long thing of crust and pull it apart with my teeth. I will allow that the gravy and other contents are bland and generic since if it had as much flavor as I actually want, other customers will be complaining about it. But the crust I cannot forgive. Overall it was not bad though. Surprisingly, my favorite item was the brussels sprouts. Even with all the seasoning and cheese, I found the flavor to be well balanced. Even after most of the plate, I noticed I didn't find it too salty. I really like the menus in the crappy brown folders. Had some great happy hour bites at the Tavern. The $7 Cabernet Sauvignon was delicious. Loved the floral center piece at the table and the beautiful distressed wood table itself. Service was friendly, and the food came out promptly. The waygu steak taco was my favorite, it had a great flavor and was very tender. Located within walking distance from Hotel Del and the beach, Tavern is a great place to grab a bite to eat or a drink! The ambiance is pretty laid back with low lighting and low background noise. My favorite part of the experience is realizing that you're slightly below sidewalk level and the foot traffic outside is a little less than most restaurants. Great spot located on the main street, but set on a lower level to create a lovely and intimate setting. Outdoor seating is available, but the interior truly is warm and inviting with lots of wood, stone, low lighting and subtle floral accents. Our bartender/server Hannah was great. Friendly, attentive, quick and helpful. My husband had the sliders, which he enjoyed. I ordered the Crispy Brussel Sprouts, which were flash fried and too burnt for me. I couldn't find any green in the dish. All the sprouts looked and tasted overdone. Thankfully, the dish was removed from our bill and I was given a chance to order something else. I chose the Tomato Soup Gratinée, which was INCREDIBLE. It came out in a small bowl, but the serving was perfect. The soup was rich and satisfying with lots of mozarella. It's cozy inside and the bartender knew how to handle our group. She got us hooked on some peppermint liquor they had for Christmas time and she was fast with the drinks and personable. My friend and I have passed this place many times and finally decided to give it a try. I'll first say that first impressions are very important and that the totally unprofessional and unfriendly demeanor given to us by the host is unacceptable. He neither acknowledged us nor greeted us properly nor ever smiled. His choice to be rude set a downward spiral for the rest of the night. Around 6pm, I noticed a lot of tables had guests but no food, which tells me either the staff is stretched and/or the kitchen is backed up...turns out it was both. When we finally got a waiter, they were pleasant and friendly, compared to the host, and got our orders. It wasn't until 30 MINUTES LATER that we got our food. Now luckily the food did taste very good. I had the burger, while my friend had the fish and chips. Would I ever come back? It's very hard to say. If I see that kid working as a host, then I definitely won't be back. read more

While I waited until noon, I watched ~10 people move on because they couldn't wait till noon due to lunchtime constraints. While in Coronado we go to experience the most amazing meal ever! We both got the wagyu steak and it was one of the best steak meals we've had! It was sooo tender and the chimichurri was just so tasteful. I order a lemon drop martini which was made well and my husband had a michelada which was okay , a bit too sour. But Our server was really nice and attentive. The only reason I'm giving this place a 4 stars is because my chair was quite wobbly and the tables were a bit sticky . We come down to Coronado about once or twice a year and always HAVE TO stop by The Tavern for dinner. Our usual favorites never change: Steak and Jirdori Chicken. The Jirdori Chicken is probably the best chicken I have ever ordered at a restaurant. I've told all my family about it each year and we'll probably come back soon just to order it again. Met some friends here for happy hour before a concert in the park. It's definitely hard to see the name of the restaurant from the outside but once you do you kind of go a few steps down and you are there. They have an outdoor patio a really big bar inside it's very cozy and cabin like feel. They've got great food the Brussels were fantastic so were the burgers and their bartender makes some great cocktails too. The hostess is in waitresses were super sweet and went out of their way to make sure that we had everything that we needed as well as a big enough table for all of us. Their prices were reasonable. I came to Coronado to visit a friend and we decided to go to dinner here at The Tavern. We had heard from other recommendations that we should give them a try. The parking in the area can be tricky. There are numerous street-parking opportunities nearby and it's important to be mindful of the ones that have a 2-hour parking limit and which ones are unlimited. I parked about 3.5 blocks down by the beach and it was a short walk. The interior of The Tavern is very reminiscent of an old Irish Pub of sorts. Mostly all wooden, homey decor, kind of an earthy overtone and I could appreciate the vibes. Service was superb, friendly & super-attentive I chose seating at a window booth, instead of a high-table. One thing to note is that depending on the season & weather, although you're indoors, it can get a bit chilly and you may still want a sweater. Oh and their bathroom was super-clean and that's always a plus and speaks to the cleanliness & organization of an establishment. I ordered the pork belly tostadas (street tacos) that come a gooseberry demi-glaze for starters and their "fish and chips". The tostadas were freakin amazing! Meat was cooked to perfection, tender and the gooseberry sauce lended a subtle sweetness to the flavors. The tostada was crispy & not soggy and complimented the tender meat. The fish and chips were disappointing however. Their size was smaller than I anticipated, the texture of the first one was crispy and the other two tended to be soggy on the underside (indicative of too much oil). The flavor was as expected & good and the tartar sauce was basic, but worked to boost the flavor profile. Unfortunately, the last two fish pieces were so soft that they crumbled when trying to dip them. The only big win is that I was told that they use fresh local fish and that's why I ordered them (support local fishermen). I just think that $21 was a bit steep for this experience. For dessert, I ordered the churros & hot chocolate dip and got a side of vanilla icecream. This was the perfect sweet treat! I got 3 long churros warm, a bowl of hot chocolate sauce to dip them in and the cool icecream complemented the entire experience Overall, I really liked my experience at The Tavern. Other than the overpriced fish & chips, my dining went well and the vibes inside are great for a date night or just socializing with friends. read more

My partner and I went to Tavern this evening and sat at the bar. We had a great meal, great drinks, and fabulous service! The casual and laid back vibe of the bar was exactly what we were looking for. The happy hour menu (3-5pm) was small but perfect! Mini Mac and cheese, mini Brussels sprouts, a single beef taco, and a single slider with fries were each $4-$5. Perfect portion for one person snacking and all the items were delicious. I'm 90% positive it would've cost me more money (and wayyyy more cleanup) to make this meal at home than it would've to hop in for happy hour. Drinks on the happy hour were also fairly priced! I had the lavender lemonade which is one of their signature cocktails and comes in at just under $10 on their happy hour menu. After happy hour ended my partner tried the shishito pepper burger (there's even bacon cooked into the patty ) and it was delicious. Perfectly cooked and juicy! The bartenders Jackson, Cj, and I believe Courtney were all fantastic as well. nothing special, at least in terms of the food. the chicken pot pie was pretty bland and flavorless. I feel like the most flavorful part of it was the puff pastry crust and then the carrots in the filling. every other part of it just kind of tasted like nothing. it also wasn't very filling. my fiancée really liked the fish and chips though and I will say that they did look pretty delicious and I did try the fries which were quite yummy but not really special or anything. we went at around 6 on a wednesday in march and it was not very busy at all so our food came out super quick and extremely hot. I ended up burning my mouth pretty bad on the pot pie but thats definitely my fault and not the restaurant's. our waitress was nice but also a little stressful as she was very attentive and had us in and out in like 30-40 minutes which isn't exactly ideal since we were on vacation and so not really in any rush. we didn't try the cocktails or drinks but they did look pretty yummy from the menu but 15 dollars for a drink seems a little excessive, at least to us. the restaurant had a cool design and vibe to it although if you are sitting in the booths near the window you are below street level but there is a big open window which is kind of weird as you are basically sitting with you face down by peoples feet who are walking by. I don't think I see myself going back here, certainly not with the intention of getting the pot pie, but I wouldn't say it's a place you should avoid at all costs either. read more

I met up with friends last night here as I was not happy with a few neighboring establishments. I needed a friendly upbeat friendly atmosphere and we found exactly that here. I am particular about service and don't mind tipping for it and quite hate the opposite. The food (Salmon & potatoes) presentation was excellent and tasty. Best of all though was the beer! One of our clients booked a lunch here for us to have a meeting. We got a pretty large table on the corner. It was pretty empty for it being lunch time so there was no wait. Our server was pretty decent but kept missing one side of the table during drink orders and food orders and we had to call her back over. The flatbreads were pretty tasty and we got a couple for table to split. One of my coworkers and I were trying to be healthy so grabbed Cesar salads and even though we knew it was just a salad, it was pretty lackluster.
