Choosing Teaspoon as the first business to review ever since COVID times--I took a break from writing reviews because all the businesses struggling made me really sad, and it seemed pointless to review places as I had before. Anyways, I am grateful to Teaspoon for staying open even during the early, uncertain days of COVID lockdown. It is a big gamble for businesses to maintain operations, and the fact that I was still able to order quality milk tea drinks was comforting and definitely made daily life feel less apocalyptic. (Yes, I find milk tea essential) Teaspoon does have some of the better quality tea drinks in the area, and I would nominate it as my go-to in the Mountain View/Los Altos area. (Cupertino, Milpitas, and other milk tea hot spots are a different competition). Their menu has a nice variety of well thought-out drinks with catchy names. Favorites: - House milk tea - robust black tea, well-balanced. It tastes as though they carefully adjusted all the ratios of the tea blend, milk, and sugar to create a signature staple - Thai tea - I'm usually not a fan of Thai tea, but Teaspoon's version has a strong tea base with a nuanced blend of spices, and isn't too sweet. This is also the only drink that comes with boba (unless this is just a glitch on their website) Notable: - Strawberry sangria - deliciously jammy, reminds me of the strawberry topping from Boba Guys. It's hard to discern the black tea flavor, but it's a satisfying drink nonetheless - Lady Bug - a nice tart drink from real kumquat juice blended with green tea. It's my go-to for a refreshing drink on a hot day - Taro Lover - love that they use real taro! Other comments: - Roasted tea creama - described as dark roasted oolong, but it wasn't as roasty as I'd expected. While it looks pretty with the layers, the tea flavor was pretty weak and I prefer the standard house milk tea - Sweet marshmallow - seems creamier and sweeter than the house milk tea, good if you have a sweet tooth - Shaved ice - not the best shaved ice I've had but the texture, flavors, and toppings are quite on point. My favorites are Afternoon Tea (essentially a milk tea drink with loads of toppings, all in shaved ice form) and Hangover 3 (ft their tasty Thai tea blend) Teaspoon is a little pricey at $5 total per drink (sans toppings), large size only. Their milk options are a little confusing, because default is "lactose-free milk" but I don't think it's creamer. There is an option to upgrade to organic house cream or oat milk. The online ordering system is convenient and recently improved, since it previously didn't include the build your own option. Also, their reusable cups with the cylindrical shape and bamboo lid are so photogenic. Overall, I would recommend. I believe the Los Altos location is the original because I remember their opening in the summer some years back. I'll be continuing to support them! read more

I've heard a lot of great things about this boba spot, and a few of my Yelp friends have given this place 2 thumbs up! Not letting any of that sway my opinion, I had to put their drinks to the test! The only drinks I can comment on are the House Milk Tea and their Classic Thai Tea. No fake powdered/syrup drinks here folks. The House Milk Tea had a very distinctive taste, which you can only get when brewing it to a science. The sweetness was perfect, and it was gone before I got on the freeway! The Classic Thai Tea was just as good and potentially one of the better Thai teas I've had. The shop itself is tiny, but they do provide a small area for outdoor seating. Service was both friendly and efficient. I will report back when I get a chance to try their Special Snows. Everything I've read and seen has been nothing but positive. I've been going to this Teaspoon more since the Castro St. one is still closed. Lately, I've always been getting the caramel cream (a somewhat new item), and it's super good! I dont even really like caramel much to begin with, but it tastes really good once you mix it; the caramel, honey from the boba, and milk taste great together. It's really really sweet though, and you can't adjust the sugar level (and you can get less ice but not no ice). Also, I got the caramel cream at another location, but it didnt taste as good as this location's for some reason haha (the other location also didnt let me have less ice) I also really like the jasmine milk tea (tastes pretty light and refreshing!) A friend and I swung by looking for a nightcap. The place came highly recommended, so I put a temporary moratorium on my "no sugar" ways and decided to give it a shot. Teaspoon has various boba combos available to suit every possible palate- dairy, non dairy, classic, fruity, chocolate heavy, hot, cold and what have you. They also have a build your own boba option. My friend recommended the Matcha Royale with mango and some poppin' boba. I was tempted to go with a Thai Iced, but ended up taking his recommendation and got the Matcha too, and man, that drink really lived up to its name with some fresh and sweet mango, and delicious tapioca pearls. There were also festive drinks like a Caramel based boba and a Gingerbread Latte that might draw in the ones with a sweet tooth, or get your friend that originally wanted to go to SBUX instead, to stay on. The amount of boba you get is generous- I got me a giant glass I could barely finish. The price is slightly expensive, but I suppose that's par for the course given Los Altos. Now ,for COVID protocol - - Teaspoon have a few tables for outdoor seating but most people seem to do takeout here given it's a very small space (and no outdoor heating, none of the gas lamps were lit). - All servers wore masks - You can order ahead for pickup (please do, cause the lines tend to get long. I really want to like Teaspoon given that they're a local business and we've been coming here since they first opened, but as they've expanded there have been noticeable reductions in both quality and service. Drinks have become unbearably sweet with frustratingly limited sweetness options, and quality is inconsistent (their "smoothies" often come out syrupy and under-iced). Most of the younger staff don't seem well trained and will ignore you if you walk up or are constantly goofing around in the back. Not very confidence inspiring, but they were so great when they first opened that we've continued to patronize them. Unfortunately, our disappointing experience today was probably the last straw. Ordered pickup through their website and were given a time estimate of 3:05 PM (see photo). We were in a hurry so the plan was to make a quick stop for drinks. Arrived at 3:10 PM and waited in the pickup line only to find out that they didn't make our order. After a long back and forth where they tried to locate our order in their system, the staff member we spoke with told us to wait 5-10 minutes and it would be done. We decided to wait even though we were in a hurry, but that was clearly a mistake since they didn't even start making our order until 3:25 after I had to bother them about it since we were, once again, in a rush. While I understand that they're likely understaffed due to COVID, waiting an additional half hour for a pickup order seems rather unreasonable. Especially when they're charging such inflated prices ($6.75 for a matcha drink? Yikes!). Tried this place out on a Saturday night so that may be explain the craziness. The place overall is cool for a tea spot. They have an interesting variety of drinks available. That said I was little surprised at the limited flavors for basic milk tea. They only had the House Milk Tea and Thai Tea. Other spots I've been too had flavors such as strawberry, mango, etc.... Despite the high customer traffic the staff does try hard to keep things clean and sanitary which I can appreciate. I ended up getting the Mango Funtime with Boba. Decent smoothie overall but I'll probably stick to The Tea Spot on El Camino for future milk tea cravings. read more

The two special drinks that they had were the gingerbread latte and the sweet marshmallow. Since it was a BOGO I double fisted and got both! 1] Gingerbread latte 50% sweet - This was great, it honestly taste like a pumpkin spice latte, so if you like that you would love this. I think 100% sweetness probably would have been fine but was trying to be "healthy" and get a little less sugar. 2] Sweet Marshmallow 50% sweet - Tasted like a slightly diluted sweetened black tea but that's what I get for doing the half sweet. This was not bad but I think I liked the Gingerbread latte more. This location has okay parking and it's not super big inside but there's several places to sit outside. Teaspoon used to be my go-to boba place but their prices are just too high for me to justify coming here. If I were judging purely based on quality, this would be a five star review, but the drinks are now $5 ($5.50 at some other Teaspoons) and toppings are 65¢ each, which makes a drink cost a lot more than other similar or better quality boba shops. They do make most of their teas fresh to order but I'm not sure it validates the huge price jump. If you do choose to go to a Teaspoon though, you should go to this one or the Palo Alto one since their prices are not as high as the other ones. If you are looking for some TEA flavor, this seems the be the place to go in Los Altos, A friend of mine had already gone the day before and I asked her hour she liked it and she said it was great because of the tea flavor in the drinks. I love that about boba drinks. I ordered the roasted oolong tea with boba made with a quarter sweetness. I felt the tea flavor and the boba was sweetened and cooked to the right consistency. The cup size felt pretty massive as well for a regular. If you aren't down for tea, they have other special drinks and shaved snow as well! When paying, remember to use your FiveStar card/phone number if you have one to get points. 1 pt per drink. 5 pts gives you a bogo half off. Also, remember to check in for a free topping. The line is pretty long. Literally wrapped around the small area in front and out the door. It moved relatively quickly and there are a few sample drinks in front for you to try to pass the time. I really mean try...don't be drinking from that. lol. One improvement I would make is to no have them people pick up drinks in the middle of the line. It's an awkward location and the customer has to ask people in line to slip in to grab his/her drink... Always busy when I went here to satisfy my bubble tea fix. Small place with very limited seating inside & a few tables outside. No public bathroom from what I could see. They were always out of snow also. Staff did not ask what level of sweetness I wanted the first time I was there but was asked on other occassions. Staff had a flat affect & each time I went the staff behind the register didn't even smile. A few staff members also looked confused on what they were doing. I think staff needs an update as I have seen a few comments about staff. I had the mango one & also have had their house milk tea. Size is great & I would say within a reasonable price. Fair amount of boba. Menu is a little confusing but flavors are good. Women in front of me just wanted water with Boba for the kids she had with her & they would not do this for her. I was told ice adjustments couldn't be made for these drinks, and despite making sweetness adjustments, the yin yang (milk tea with espresso) was still overly sweet and the cup was like 80% ice. The mint mojito had a nice fresh mint flavor but that too was way too sweet for my liking and mostly ice. Over $5 for a coffee-ish drink with no toppings that was more than half ice is just a plain rip-off. There are better boba and coffee places. Horrible service. The people working there pay no attention to patrons that want to order at the register. On more than one occasion the store has been "closed for maintenance" when I have tried to go and the sign on the door said they would reopen at 4:30 only for the workers to open the door and say they wouldn't be open until 5pm. The first time I ordered a "liquid gold" which is pretty much an oolong milk tea. It was good, but not great to the point where I would rave about it. The second time, I got a virgin strawberry mojito - which I do NOT recommend. I requested it less sweet and even so, it was more sweet than I had liked. PARKING + AMBIENCE They're located in an old fashion but large plaza with many different sections. There is a parking lot, but it gets crowded and is shared between all the other businesses in this plaza. There are only three tables inside the place but plenty of outdoor seating. It gets stuffy inside, so most people hang around outside while waiting for their drinks. DRINKS Sweetness adjustment is available, I get 75% sweetness and it is a good balance. They have a large selection of toppings from boba to all kinds of jellies, check-in on Yelp to get one for free. The first drink I tried here was the Grasshopper which is their signature cucumber drink. It was a refreshing drink, but I wasn't sold on the taste, I don't like cucumber in drinks I guess. On my second visit I got the Rose Petal Creama and I enjoyed this more. It was a delicious blend of rose tea and creama mixed together for a flavorful taste. SERVICE When I came there was a long line of people and lots of drinks being queued. There were three workers on the line working at a fast and energetic pace. They were cheerful and full of smiles while making the drinks, so it was a vibrant environment. CONCLUSION This is a pretty good place to get boba tea drinks. I will say that this place is not hard to miss though because they have a big sign that says "TEASPOON" and the spoon is with the spoon logo. Seating: They have tons of outside seating; however their seating inside is very limited. When they get busy, there is a line that happens outside the door and sometimes there are people waiting inside the place which makes it feel cramped. The seating inside can maybe seat a total of 10 people give or take. Bubble Tea: They have a variety of specialty drinks such as the Paradise Lime, Grapefruit garden, and Mango Funtime which is pretty cool compared to other bubble tea places. They way their drinks are posted with the images, it reminds me of the drinks at Teaquation. If you do not want their specialty drinks you can create your own. The steps to creating your own tea is: (1) Pick what kind of tea you want. They have a variety of teas, at least 10-15 types (2) Hot or Cold tea (3) Sweetness level (4) Dairy (5) Toppings Snow: Another unique thing about this place is that they offer snow which is essentially shaved ice. One of my favorite milk tea places! I love how they use real tea and fresh ingredients to make their drinks. Also, their honey boba is amazing - it's the perfect consistency (not too mushy or overly chewy). Their egg pudding is also great! Recommendations: - Creamy Jasmine milk tea - Japanese Rice (Genmaicha) milk tea - High Mountain Oolong milk tea - Hojicha milk tea The prices are a bit high and the lines can be a bit long at night sometimes (after dinner), but I definitely think it's worth it! I'm not usually one to complain but this past Sunday I took my family there to grab some boba before we went out to eat and there was seven of us with a line behind us as well. After forty-five minutes of waiting our table at a nearby restaurant was ready so we sent them ahead while waiting for our drinks. After another twenty minutes we realized people behind us in line were getting their drinks, so when we went up to ask if they were ready the response was "oh they haven't started your drinks yet?" Yes the hype is real!! Teaspoon is next level bubble tea. I've tried both the San Jose and Los Altos locations and they were equally yummy. The boba is perfectly chewy and sweet, the tea is quality, and the flavor combos are unique and fresh. I'm a fan of the Grasshopper which is lychee green tea w/ fresh cucumber juice. Super refreshing, light, and not too sweet. But enough's been said about their tea already...what's missing from most of the previous reviews is the real star in my book: SNOW!!! There are a lot of good bubble tea options, but it's much harder to find quality shaved snow around here. Teaspoon may be the best snow I've tried. Real shaved snow needs to be soft and creamy. Otherwise it's shaved ice. Teaspoon's snow is fluffy, creamy heaven in a bowl. They have pre-set snow combos or you can create your own. I choose taro snow w/ taro topping, yogurt popping boba, and condensed milk. The taro snow is dairy free with real taro flavor. The taro topping has visible specks of real taro as well. The yogurt popping boba complimented the creamy taro perfectly. I didn't think snow could get any better... Then I tried my BF's combo: Honeydew shaved snow w/ mango jelly, lychee jelly, and condensed milk. Holy cow. The flavor profile was so different from my taro snow and yet just as addictively good. Sadly they ran out of taro chunks, but I got it with egg pudding, and it was amazing. I simply could not put my drink down. Every sip had me going, "WOW!". At first sip, it was plain as water. I waited on the drink and I mixed it up more so the cucumber juice can disperse. It was a little bit weird at first but the drink began to grow on me and was quite interesting. The only sweetness came from the popping boba I ordered with it. Virgin Mojito (peach): The cashier recommended this, it had fresh mint leaves & key lime with premium jasmine green tea with lychee popping boba. Very plain in flavors as in "watered down." I didnt quite taste the tea nor the peach flavor. The only thing giving it flavor was again the popping boba. A little sad about how the drinks turned out because I expected so much from it. But looking at their menu the Rainforest Smoothie looks and sound really good, so hopefully I'll go back and give it another try. ::Service/Atmosphere/Parking:: Service was quite nice. Nothing to complain about. They messed up my first order but they remade my drink and gave me the first to keep as well with no extra charge. The place itself was quite small. The interior did not have much design and had only about 2 tables that fit 2 people each. The outside had a nice patio with several tables and a long bench with high "bar" chairs. THERE WERE A LOT OF HIGH SCHOOLERS. LIKE FLOODED WITH THEM. lol there must be a school nearby. Parking was never a problem as there was a big parking lot for the plaza. A great milk tea and dessert spot nestled in a cute plaza in Redwood City -- perfect to stop by after a nearby dinner! I got the regular house milk tea with lychee jelly and it was really tasty. Teaspoon used to be my favorite bubble tea spot in the Bay Area, and I used to go about once per week. After a few mediocre drinks from some mediocre locations, I kind of gave up on Teaspoon. However, I recently went back since I wanted bubble tea when I was in Mountain View... Now I remember why I loved it so much. Teaspoon's toppings are definitely some of the best in the area. Their honey boba is the perfect texture and has great flavor. Their almond pudding is delicious and silky. Their drinks are high quality with a strong fragrant tea taste. I got one of my tried-and-trues, but now I'm curious to try more drinks from their expanded menu. I'm still a bit hesitant to go to other Teaspoon locations, as this one has always been the best (as it is the original too) and most consistent. I've never had an issue with my order here. Teaspoon is currently in their soft opening phase. The shop interior is super cute and bright. As soon as I walked in with 4 of my friends, the cashier offered us samples of their tea. She graciously poured out five samples of each tea for us to try! I tried the assam milk tea and sampled their osmanthus oolong milk tea as well as the virgin mojito. The virgin mojito tastes similar to what you'd usually get when you order a virgin mojito, and the osmanthus oolong milk tea was delicious! You can definitely tell that the osmanthus fragrance is there. Their pricing is based on a $4 base for the drink plus 50 cents for each topping. They have regular boba, crystal boba (I think it's a clear boba), grass jelly, etc. Their ordering model is something like 1. choose a tea, 2. add milk or no milk, 3. customise sugar level, and then 4. choose toppings. They also have specialty drinks like a rose creama tea and a 'grasshopper' drink that had some sort of cucumber puree in it that I also wanted to try, and they also offer dessert like shaved ice. The assam milk tea (I got 70% sweet) hit the spot. It was just the right amount of sweetness for me. Also, the reason I know that it's in the soft opening phase is because I asked for a thinner straw (since I didn't get toppings with my tea), and the employee told me that they would have thinner straws for their grand opening.
