I love the Capitol Hill restaurant, so was excited to have one closer to me. Wait wasn't too long, liked that they had more seating. But it is SO loud, I could barely hear my friends, although it was a group of 5 very chatty ladies getting together for brunch. Food: I had the T.U.B.S. (Teds Ultimate Breakfast Sammy) which is texas toast, fried egg, scrambled egg, sausage, bacon, cheddar -served with hash browns. Sounds great, right? To my disappointment, it was really not great. It's a ton of eggs, the tiniest drop of sausage, bacon not visible, and unseasoned hash browns. The others were all so-so, the cinnamon roll good but basically too sweet and too large for it to be breakfast. My friend felt ill afterwards. They also have a 10 grain hot cereal dish, which when my friend asked our server if she should get it, he told her not to pay $9 for a bowl of cereal.. True, I appreciated the honesty, but if that's the case, don't charge that much.. Service: our server was fine, but I couldn't decide if he was trying to be helpful by checking in on us every 5 mins, or if we wanted us to leave by interrupting our conversation every 5 mins. This place is everything you want in a brunch place. Delicious, iconic baked good? Check. Solid coffee and a place to get some while you wait? Check. Diverse menu with lots of different stuff? Check. Bizarre combination of well-to-do young families and grody, hungover hipsters? Check. I'll start with the Pop Tarts because duh. They were great. I didn't even feel embarrassed ordering one of each kind to devour myself ... how does one pick between Blueberry Cheesecake, Strawberry, Salted Caramel, Brown Sugar, and Apple Pie? Blueberry Cheesecake and Salted Caramel were the best, with the seasonal Apple Pie coming in last. Apple Pie lost a few points when I heard that they've had Peanut Butter & Bacon as a previous seasonal offering, but that's not really Apple Pie's fault. As for brunch itself, I had one of the best Cobb salads that I've ever had. I picked the avocado vinaigrette for dressing, which is a must. It was delicious. I went with fried chicken, which was surprisingly not too greasy. Healthy portions of sliced avocado, crumbled Gorgonzola, and crispy bacon really completed the masterpiece. Everyone else seemed to love their selections as well. Icing on the cake (literally) was watching one of the bakers make a delicious-looking 5 layer carrot cake from scratch while we waited. One of those places that makes you wish the whole thing was your kitchen. "Oh, good morning - I'll have eggs, please!" I ordered onion rings to start. Not great. A bit oily and quite bland. Me loves an onion ring, so was a bit disappointed. Plenty of them, though - they don't skimp on portions. But what's up with chefs/cooks not picking up a salt shaker in the kitchen these days? Seasoning does not have to be PC. However, my main was decently on-point. Forever in a mood for creole/cajun (it's in my bones), I tried their gumbo with shrimp, chicken, & andouille sausage. And you know what? It was pretty darn good! While it was a bit heavy on the tomato base (needed more of a spicy roux flavor instead of Hunt's - ouch), it was still tasty, savory, saucy, and plentiful. And hot with heat...finally, a restaurant that understands that heavy, saucy dishes, especially creole/cajun dishes, MUST be served piping hot to be fully enjoyed! And the cornbread on the side was ahh-mazing; grilled and crisp, yet moist. I'm definitely a fan. I've heard great things about their pop-tarts and other homemade treats, but my diet is too limited to indulge. I'd recommend trying them out, though...my entree' was full of 'made-from-scratch' deliciousness, so I don't doubt their other offerings will be any less stellar. I have been here twice now so it must be good. Their pop tarts are nothing to rave about. Very little filling, which may be the purposeful. The adult milkshakes are pretty good. Went here to commence the birthday festivities, specifically for an alcoholic milkshake. Long story short: Our waiter served up a pop-tart a-la-mode, a pop-tart that we didn't order. We figured that he was simply offering up a kind, endearing gesture. I even turned red because I was so surprised and taken aback. The fun stopped, unfortunately, when the birthday "gift" was slathered onto the bill. We were charged for something we never ordered and were too confused / dumbfounded to make a fuss over it. When your waiter tells you that something's "on the house," there's typically no reason to believe he's misleading you. Anyhow, that was a major faux pas / snafu that I wasn't particularly fond of. The waiter was awkward and, oddly enough, managed to put a dent into the day's celebration. In summation, don't charge patrons for sh*t they didn't order and tell them it's on the house because, honestly, with the milkshake already mixed I really wasn't in the mood for an additional treat. Just bad customer service in my humble opinion. So let me start off by saying that the food isn't bad, the food is fine. We had the tubs, walk of shame burrito, and two of the teds tarts (house made pop tarts). My big issue is the price, and how the food is not a good value for what you pay. The quality of the food is on par with just about any greasy spoon I've ever eaten in. Which is to say servicable comfort food, but at nearly $12 for a basic breakfast sandwich, and just shy of $14 for a very basic breakfast burrito, I felt terribly underwhelmed. There's no real flare or anything stand out about the food. Both dishes came with has browns, which taste about exactly as you expect. Which again, is fine if I am paying $7 or $8 bucks for my burrito, but at $14, I didn't feel to great about it. The pop tarts are essentially cookie tarts with barely any feeling. I don't mean to sound hyperbolic, but they have the consistency of stark white supermarket sugar cookies with the fluorescent frosting. Which again, aren't bad when you're paying $3 or $4 bucks for 24 cookies, but at $4 bucks a tart, the value isn't there. The total cost was almost as much as what we paid for dinner at Momofuku the night before, and was FAR below the value and quality that previous meal achieved. Brunch is the best meal of the day, and this place gives you that best brunch. I came here for my birthday brunch with a group of friends. **It was a Saturday morning, so you definitely want to make reservations!!!! We were seated right away in a big booth. Our waitress was very nice and helpful since it was our first time ever eating here. I got the pancake stack with over-easy eggs and hash browns. A few other meals my friends ordered was the Tubs sammie, the walk of shame breakfast burrito, and chicken 'n biscuits. Big portions, delicious food and coffee, and great atmosphere. My friends told the waitress it was my birthday, and at the end of our meals, she came by with one of their homemade pop tarts with a candle from their bakery in the front. It was very good as well. This place has great design - a diner from the 1920's. Subway tiles, old fashioned lighting hardware, speakers in the ceiling. Unfortunately thats what you're paying for at this establishment. I was pleasantly surprised by Ted's - which was packed on Saturday afternoon. The tomato soup is truly Ted's famous tomato soup - it was better than that at Founding Farmers (which I ate the next day) - a thicker consistency, just the right amount of creaminess - delicious. I can't speak to the grilled cheese as I just got a cup of the soup. My cinnamon pop tart was good, but even better were the shakes, and we didn't even get an adult shake. Having been quoted a 90 minute wait time at the Barrack's Row location on a long ago Saturday before brunching elsewhere, and having consumed the takeout version of both their pop tarts and breakfast burrito without falling in love, I was pretty sure Ted's Bulletin was going to be overrated. I wanted to knock it off my DC bucket list, however, so on the most hungover Saturday I've experienced in recent memory I decided it was the right moment to brave the crowds at Ted's for some carb therapy and met up with my friend for brunch. Happily, the experience was not the least bit disappointing and left me more charmed than I expected. We waited a totally reasonable 15 minutes to be seated and were regaled by our waiter with a long and enthusiastic spiel that, while overwhelming after so many beers at my 10 year high school reunion the night before, was also forgivable once I realized that Ted's (and by extension the Matchbox Food Group**) earnestly styles itself a Washington-area institution, and that the staff seem to take genuine pleasure and pride in being part of it. Our waiter was really excited to stress to us the lengths to which the kitchen will go to make any sort of add-on or substitution in your order, including putting a pop tart in a breakfast burrito (an obscene proposition, but okay). The food is all-American and yummy. My grilled cheese (yes please do add bacon, thanks) and tomato soup were a very hangover-worthy version of that classic, and my friend ate her short rib sandwich too fast for me to try it. Mac & cheese is solid, plus bonus points for coming in a cute skillet and being topped with breadcrumbs. Normally I'm more of a home fries girl, but the crispy/greasy shredded potato hash browns I ordered on the side were exactly the right antidote to an overly boozy Black Friday. High marks overall and will definitely be back for that legendary peanut butter bacon burger. **Mini Rant: People can relax about Ted's being a chain. I love independently owned businesses as much as the next person, but if you're from this area then you know that California Tortilla and Lebanese Taverna are also chains that, like Matchbox Food Group, are locally grown and have opened new locations in and around DC as their perfectly good food and service earned well-deserved popularity. Jose Andres restaurants are also chains - would you compare those to Burger King? Get off your high horse, not every business is either mom&pop or an evil corporation. read more

This place is the best of the best where affordable American Cuisine is concerned. I love coming to Teds anytime I'm in DC. This is a great place to come with friends for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. I have never walked away unsatisfied with the service, or food. They are pretty popular, so my advice to you would be to either make a reservation in advance using the OpenTable app, or call ahead to have your name put on the list for a table. This is especially important if you plan to come with more than 2/3 people. On the weekends during lunch/dinner rush, I've seen wait times of 1-1.5 HOURS. Don't let this happen to you, always call ahead. If you have to wait, at least there's a bar in the waiting area, or you can walk over to the bakery side and check out their fresh assortment of homemade donuts, pop tarts, and other yum-yums. Another bit of advice: Don't plan to park nearby. 99.9% of the time, I take the metro to the neighborhood, then make the 10min walk from the metro station. I have only ever driven here once, and when I did, I spent 30 mins trying to find non-residential parking. This neighborhood is full of retail shops and restaurants, so it's always difficult finding a legal spot to park. Plan ahead, and arrive early if you find that driving is your only option. Let's talk food. EVERY. THING. IS. DELICIOUS. If you read the menu and stop on something that SOUNDS good, I can promise you that it will TASTE good too. I'm always asking our server about any new items/special soups/entrees of the day, for if I'm struck with the mood to try something different. My tried and true dish of choice: MEATLOAF! So delicious. Always cooked and seasoned to perfection, I seldom stray from it. As with their entrees, their side dishes are to die for. I always have a hard time choosing which one I want to pick to accompany my beloved meatloaf. The ones that usually win out are: Mac & Cheese, and the Brussel Sprouts (which have bacon and bleu cheese! YUMMY)! Something you cannot go without: Milkshakes! Teds' milkshakes are the bomb.com! Again, I always play around with the flavors by customizing a shake just the way I want it. Sub chocolate ice cream for vanilla, or vice versa. Add fruit. Anything your little heart desires. It's perhaps average or slightly above average from the breakfasts that I've had here but it's nothing special. Additionally it's overpriced. Prices are about 20% more than they ought to be. And yes I know it's DC and things cost more but that's a comparison to other food places. Maybe you're paying for the location? Maybe their lunches or dinners are better, or maybe I'm missing something that other people are eating that I haven't been privy to. Who knows? Oh and the homemade poptarts? Uh, what's the hype for? I went to Ted's Bulletin for brunch with my daughter and my boyfriend for a family outing. I loved this place, but the wait time and lack of being able to make reservations was an INCREDIBLE PAIN!! - Read on for the headache - Skip down to the 3rd Paragraph for the good stuff :-) I usually make all reservations via my open table app, but I was unable to this time so I called the night before to make reservations and was told they do not do reservations, but they do call ahead. Just to make sure, I called the next morning and tried to make reservations for 11:00 am and was told that they only do call ahead. I figured okay that's cool I'll just call ahead when I'm in route to Ted's that way by the time I get there I should have no problem being seated. I left my house around 10:10 am coming from VA headed to DC. I got on the highway and proceeded to "Call Ahead" only to be told "We are not doing call ahead, walk-in only" I was immediately irritated. I asked how long was the wait and was told 45 minutes (Which is how long it would probably take for me to get there anyway!!! We arrive and my daughter gets out to place our name on the list and get a buzzer. When she gets back to the car she said they told her 1 HOUR AND 10 MINUTES!!! I was so set on this place because I wanted my daughter to experience their pastry bar or I would have left. We ride to the Starbucks and get coffee and hangout for a while then go and park on U street and walk back to the restaurant. We went in to check on our time because by now we should have about 15 minutes left. They told us we had about an hour. Of course by now my boyfriend "kindly" had a talk with them, and we were shortly seated.....This was the worst part of the trip, Now on to the good stuff!!! Our waitress was very nice and super knowledgeable on the menu, specials, drinks just everything. I wish I would have remembered her name but my anger hadn't subsided just yet at the time. I had the BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP, which was delicious...Mark on an Off Day, (which was so fitting) consists of 2 eggs, choice of meat, hash browns or toast....It was cool...I also had the POMEGRANATE MIMOSA, which was also delicious. Upon departing we stopped by the Pastry Bar. I'm not a big dessert fan but I wanted to try EVERYTHING they had over at the pastry area. I purchased the MILE-HIGH BANANA CREAM PIE, the doughnut holes with strawberry cheesecake filling and my daughter had the Blueberry Cheesecake. we took it home for later of course but they were all so remarkably good. Recipe for joy at Ted's: go hungry, but not a 9/10 hungry because you may have to wait a tiny eternity. But definitely go hungry enough to have room for the ridiculously good dining you're about to indulge in! Order the mac & cheese, the chicken biscuits, maybe a s'mores shake. Get a strawberry Ted tart to go for the next morning. REGRET NOTHING. Stupid good food, excellent staff, fun retro atmosphere, and insanely good portions for the price. The only downsides are: 1) I leave overstuffed, if giddy (my fault), and 2) no reservations (theirs). I do understand, as it's a new-ish and quite popular place - why take reservations if you don't need it? - although a 1,000 calorie meal is usually a special occasion outing in my book and special occasions are exactly the time you don't want to wait in the (pleasant) lobby for hours, which we did last night. The estimate for a table for 6 was 60-75 mins and wound up being 2 hours. I'm a Fan of this place, this location ONLY because of the Experience. It's beautifully set up and the display by the take out area called all of us to get dessert before being seated. The food was a 3 ... the kitchen got our order wrong not once, but twice - first bringing me a veggie burger instead of turkey and then did not put french fries on any of our sandwiches the way it was listed on the menu. The mac and cheese and cheese grits were both really good. Now the highlight - The pop tarts were awesome! Like always ... Got cherry - which is here just for the Cherry Blossom season ... Came here for my first meal in DC. The ambience is very quaint with the old movies playing in the background and the way the menus are displayed on the walls, love it. We were worried it would be packed but we lucked out on a Friday morning and were seated right away. The service was superb, our service answered all the questions we had and gave his recommendations. Maybe it was because I was exhausted from the long drive to DC, but I had their coffee black and it was some of the best I've had, I just kept wanting to refill my mug. My friends and I started our meal by sampling all of the poptart specials they had that day, the blueberry one was my favorite, and I believe we had the brown sugar or maple one. I'm not sure, but it was my least favorite while my friend still raves about it. Order all of the flavors of the day and there will be something to satisfy everyone at the table. read more

The weekend of the DC Walk to end HIV seemed like the perfect time for a new brunch spot--considering we wanted breakfast food late on a Saturday. 'Tis no small feat in the city. Most of my favorite brunch spots are open for brunch on Sunday only. But enter our savior, Ted's. I walked in the doors around noon and cringed. This place was PACKED. Word must travel of Saturday brunch. The seasoned ladies ahead of us in line seemed quite distraught by whatever wait time they'd been given. I feared then that my experience at Ted's would be delayed yet another day. I gulped slowly, approaching the hostess booth with caution and ready for the worst. "It's an hour and a half wait" I panicked. I didn't have that much time. I guess the servers could tell we weren't interested in that, however, and the little gods of great food began to work their blessings. The staff quickly arranged some bar seating for my party of three. "Don't worry, we can seat you now," the hostess suddenly promised. We were then whisked away to a counter height table with bar stools facing the windows--an extension of the bar area. The table was perfect. And I breathed a sigh of relief knowing I avoided that insane wait time. It felt a lot like when you're standing in line a long time for a ride and then they close it down right AFTER you've gotten on. The servers moved quickly and were both pleasant and engaging. My friend, a Ted's native, suggested the Adult Milkshakes. I ordered the Bananas Foster. I am still thinking about how great of a decision that was 4 weeks later. On to meals. 1 Chicken n Biscuits. 1 Ted's Ultimate with a sides of grits. 1 Thick-Cut French Toast. We all shared everything. And ALL the food was SO good. Ted's does breakfast right (and milkshakes better!). But what were the highlights? I would say the milkshake. The grits, which were life changing. The milkshake. And the chicken n biscuits. Honorable mention were the french toast and home fries! It was refreshing to eat at a place that puts food first--even before atmosphere. And even though Ted's Bulletin has both great food and great atmosphere. I can't wait to come here again, to EAT. It started with a review. It ended with a review. read more
