Visited Teikoku twice over the last few months...admittedly the first visit was a 3/5, just good enough to give it another try...but wow did the second visit impress us. The meal we had blew our expectations out of the water. I've never been so happy to pay a $100 bill (2 of us dined and had appetizers as well as a few drinks each) in my life. The seafood was expertly prepared and the presentation was what I would expect at a 5 star restaurant. I will definitely be dining again in the near future and if I find the same quality, Teikoku will become a regular spot for me. read more

I went here last night and found the food to be delicious! The yellow fin ceviche is to die for, but it is really a one person appetizer. I ordered the sea scallops and saffron cream sauce and it was heavenly, my husband ordered the seafood paella which was delicious but very spicy. My only disappointment was our seating arrangement. We arrived around 5:15 pm when the place was practically empty yet we were seated in an awkward table next to/behind the bar. I actually had to move a ladder out of the way to sit down. The bar was fairly loud and distracting. Overall I would definitely go again but would asked to be moved to a different table if they put me there again. read more

I pass by Teikoku all the time - to and from work. Finally, I gave in and tried it with my boyfriend. It is great for sushi and I absolutely love the hot rock appetizer. I wish they had an entree version of the hot rock. I have been to Teikoku 3 times so far and each time the food has been consistently good. One of my favorites! read more

We came Thursday, March 24 for lunch with a party of 14. We were greeted immediately and quickly brought to our table. Our waiter was quick to bring everyone water and get everyone's drink order. He was knowledgeable about the menu and was able to give everyone recommendations that weren't familiar with Japanese cuisine or sushi. Everyone was very happy with what they ordered and the service that was provided. We were coming from an assisted living community and some of our residents had walkers, the manager was nice enough to find a place for them all. Needless to say we will be coming back ! read more

My husband and I have been here a few times and had a great experience, however this past Friday night we were very disappointed. We started with two miso soups and two appetizers. The appetizers came out first, about 35 minutes after we ordered. After we finished those, I asked the server if our miso soups were on the way, (the previous times we dined the soups came out first and I wanted to make sure they weren't forgotten). Our server got very snippy with me and said he wanted us to have room on the table. His attitude really set the tone for the night and I found it very unnecessary as I was very polite. After our appetizers were finished we waited about another 15 minutes for our soups. After we finished those we waited 35-40 minutes for our entrees to arrive. We were at the restaurant for a total of two hours. I hope this was just an off night. read more

Consider this a 4 and half star review. The only thing keeping me from giving them 5 stars is that the pricing on some dishes is a little high. We live right down the road and have eaten there at least 20 times. It is consistently excellent and we've never had to send something back, not once. We like to sit at the bar if possible, the bartenders are very friendly. I don't eat sushi but my wife says it's the best in the area and she's never had a bad piece. I usually get the basil crab friend rice, pad thai, or filet. All are excellent. The blueberry creme brulee cheesecake is a little piece of heaven. Only problem is that it's small - so we order two sometimes. read more

He swore I would fall in love with it. And I did...! Godzilla rolls are the absolute yummiest! Calamari salad is also really good. Has a spicy kick to it. Ate dinner at Teikoku yesterday. I loved everything about it. The ambiance is unique and exciting, and the service was fast and great. We got delicious sushi to start and I had the sesame chicken with cooked broccoli and carrots, as well as white rice as an entree. It was the best sesame chicken I've ever had. I wanted to like this place. I really really did. I have been coming to Teikoku for a few months now about once every 2 weeks. My friend and I live pretty far away from each other and this is halfway between our houses. Happy hour is cheap and the food has been consistently good. But then. Last night. About a month ago we came for happy hour on a Friday and it was so busy we couldn't get a seat. Not really that horrific and we went somewhere else disappointed we weren't going to enjoy our sushi and sake. We decided to give happy hour another go last night. We arrived around 5:15 on a Thursday night and did not expect to have an issue getting seats. Unfortunately at no ones fault there were no seats left. The hostess told us 3 women had a table waiting for them and pointed them out and said they should be getting up soon and good luck. I appreciated her helping us find the right place to stand to ensure seating. We went to stand by the 3 women and the man directly to their right was finishing up and got up to leave. Great! One seat down, one to go. My friend took the seat and I was still standing. The bartender came over and asked what we wanted. We told her we were starving and were trying to find another seat, but for now we would just have a drink. She wasn't overly friendly but she did make our drinks pretty fast. The women never got up. Then we looked over and realized 2 women who came in about 20 minutes after us had been seated at another section of the bar. someone had brought them out extra bar stools. I was already annoyed. I was the only one standing and we had now told the hostess AND the bartender we needed another seat only to not be helped. This wouldn't be a huge deal except clearly there had always been an extra seat and it just hadn't been provided to us. I'm annoyed, but again. I'll live. THEN the following scenario took place: The 2 women who came in after us and had been given seats at another section of the bar got up. My friend said hey look! 2 empty seats. Go grab one and bring it over here so we can order! I get over to the 2 seats, I ask the lady next to them if she needed them and she said no, all you! GREAT! The bartender then comes over and says "no, no, no. You can't have those." me: "Why not?" Bartender: "Those 2 people who just walked in are getting them." Me: "Well. Um. Sorry? I've been waiting like 45 minutes for a seat why would they get the bar stools? You know I was waiting." Bartender: "Yeah. Um. Sorry. But like, They come here all the time. You can't sit here!!!" Now I know why of the other 100+ seats in the restaurant, only the bar was full. Because if it wasn't for the good prices, NO ONE would come eat here. The manager named Kevin, was O SO KIND as to apologize after I informed him of what happened. He said oh hey look, it's 6:15 (happy hour ends at 6:30). Why don't I seat you somewhere and you can enjoy happy hour prices through the end of happy hour but at a table. To which I kindly informed him that it was 15 minutes until happy hour ended, that they ruined my evening, and that I just wanted to leave. He said he was going to go and speak with the bartender and I told him I really just wanted my check so I could leave. Apparently he needed to "get the whole story" before i was allowed to pay... Because obviously it just WASN'T annoying enough. He goes over to the bartender, and the ENTIRE bar hears AND sees her explain that it wasn't her fault and that I was a F***** B****. HOW UNPROFESSIONAL CAN AN ENTIRE STAFF GET?! Honey, I might be a F***** B****, but you just lost one of the best regulars you could ever have had. Please, enjoy all 4 customers you get on a regular basis. I'm sure that their "regular" tipping will make you rich and hopefully pay for a new face. I will never be back. And Kevin, I told you to look for my yelp review. To which you replied "great. we already have no customers." case and point. and goodnight! read more

I normally do not write reviews but these were faults that just could not be overlooked. I came here with my family for a celebratory dinner on a Friday night. The place was full but we were promptly seated for our reservation time and our drink and appetizer order was taken quickly. For three people we ordered the chef's choice sushi/sashimi and a seaweed salad. Both were great! The pieces of fish were a good size and there was a good helping of the seaweed salad. It seems like sushi is the only thing this place was able to do well! The entrees were a disaster! The birthday girl in our party ordered the lobster and it came out very overcooked! You could barely chew the meat --that is when you could get it out of the claw. We are not new to seafood and have reasonable expectations and this was just a shocking disappointment. Another in our group ordered the seafood paella which essentially a pot of rice cooked in coconut milk with 3 mussels and a piece of white fish, which wasn't even listed as the included seafood! We were willing to overlook that paella is not supposed to be cooked with coconut milk but the fact that there wasn't even any seafood in it was disappointing. I ordered the diver scallops --it wasn't my favorite combination. I though the sauce was too heavy and creamy for what is supposed to be a lighter dish. However the problem was that the scallops on the skewer were all different sizes and so were all cooked through to different points (the big ones being just barely done while the small ones completely dry). The disappointment in the group left us all with the feeling that none of us would ever be returning to this place. read more

We have eaten here several times with no problem. The young ladies who are at the desk as you walk in could use some training in customer relations- no personality at all. After we were seated and given water, the waitress asked if we would like anything to drink. I asked for hot green tea. She told me they didn't have any because they ran out. How does a Japanese restaurant run out of green tea? We ordered an appetizer to split, plus sushi rolls for dinner. Our friends did not order an appetizer. All the meals came out, but no appetizer. We asked the waitress, and it came out about five minutes later, not especially hot at that point. I really prefer to have my appetizer before my meal, not after. The sushi was wonderful, but I took off for the poor service and attitude at the front desk. read more

Manager TERRIBLY rude to 97-year old WW2 Veteran and his 95 year old wife. Manager rudely asked us to sit at the bar for happy hour - even though my grandparents (95 & 97) are both unable to get onto the high bar stools, and there were ZERO other customers in the restaurant at the time. He made it seem like we were a HUGE inconvenience. Dissing a WW2 vet and his 95 year old wife ... Needless to say I won't be back. VETERANS and anyone who supports the military - there are PLENTY of other establishments who would love to have our business, let's take it elsewhere. read more

There are very few outstanding restaurants on the main line especially when you live in Philadelphia and are spoiled by award winning chefs but Teikoku changed my mind. The space is huge with small areas for private dining that make it feel cozy. Decor is modern bamboo. We were a group of four and everyone loved their meals. I started with the arugula salad which was deliciously dressed and accompanied by deep fried goat cheese balls. The outside was crispy and the inside just melted in your mouth. For the entree I had the spicy noodles which kept true to its name with perfectly cooked chicken. My father-in-law had the Peruvian steak which was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented with a salad and mountain of onion rings. My wife and mother-in-law both had the scallops and were equally pleased. Some sushi and hot saki topped it all off. All in all I would drive the hour from the city to dine here again. read more

Terrible service. The waiter could not explain the items on the menu. Long wait for our order to be taken, 15 minutes after we closed the menus. Ordered a medium filet minion, came out raw. Was brought back out after 15 minutes, the side portions were much smaller and the filet was well done!!! Waiter said he was speaking to the manager to remove from our bill. The manger came over to say sorry with our paid receipt never before. For the prices and ambience we expected professionalism and received sub par service and food! So disappointed. We have been going to Teikoku for over 10 years and have seen it go from high to low points. Right now, it is in a very good place again. The food is fusion and mixes a lot of styles which is good. There is a good atomsphere and the Sushi is fresh and excellent. The Sunday buffet is different food from the menu, but is great choice for Sunday brunch for $25. read more

If I could give this restaurant less than 1 star, I might consider it! I will admit, the evening wasn't half bad, until my husband and I got home and had a horrible case of food poisoning! We shared the Peking Duck and the special sushi roll to start, both tasty (but one of these was the culprit for our illness later). Not exactly traditional fare, but still ok. My husband had the scallops. He said they were good. Again, i wouldn't consider it Thai or Japanese but still tasted good to him (I didn't try it). I originally ordered the seafood Risotto. The chef making my entree has either never seen an episode of Top Chef w/ Gordon Ramsey or never been taught how to make Risotto. Bottom line, it was crunchy! Risotto is not pasta. It is not supposed to be served al dente! Needless to say it was sent back and rather than wait another 20-30 minutes to receive a replacement, I ordered the seafood drunken noodles. This was the farthest thing from drunken noodles I have even had. It tasted more like cheap chinese chow fun noodles and sauce with seafood in it. Overall the meal and drinks were not terrible. It was a nice atmosphere (although a little loud for my taste). Our server was nice and no questions asked when i wanted to return my entree. My problem as I mentioned before was the HORRIBLE food poisoning that resulted from one of the two starters. When my husband called to speak with the manager this morning he was told that nothing would be done without a doctor's report stating a food born illness and "well I had both of those things for dinner last night and I'm find"....UMMMM, convenient isn't it, that you had the same thing for dinner as us....All i have to say is completely unprofessional and we will NEVER be going back to this place again. Our $150 would have been better spent on several rounds of sushi at Wegmans, better sushi and a hell of a lot more affordable. AND if i got sick (which i never have, I've no doubt that Wegmans would have issued a formal apology and a refund!). I would spend your money elsewhere. This review is from some time back, so hopefully things have improved, although reading some reviews, maybe not. Food was ok, although the twice cooked chicken was more like thrice cooked, dry, tough and not good. I foolishly mentioned this to the manager when he stopped by to ask If everything was ok and I reluctantly told him about this disappointment and he smiled and said he was sorry to hear that and walked off, clearly not giving a rodent's posterior. And our water? young kid, arrogant and snotty. I simply wanted a bottle of hot sake on a cold day. Lad was disappointed I was not buying the expensive stuff and tried to explain to me and upsell me, a veteran of decades of Japanese martial arts dinners, that the _good_ stuff was served cold. Yeah I know kid. Put away your attitude and take the order and go away. And despite the fact that the place was pretty empty that night, instead of the nice main room with decent ambiance, they stuck us, on date night, in the loud, unadorned side room that had no sound absorption properties. Next to the very loud drunken bachelorette party. Sure...grandma was adorable and apologized for the younger ones but still. Went to Teikoku for happy hour with girlfriends last night and it was great! Happy hour menu is until 6:30 and they have great deals including cocktail deals. Holiday party - take out was out of this world!!!! Teikoku has been my favorite restaurant since it opened 8 years ago. I had no idea they would do such a marvelous job with a take out order for 15 people for a party I hosted at my house in December 2011. Not only did the manager (Tic) sit down with me to plan a perfect menu, but the order was ready and waiting, on serving dishes, and packed to perfection when I arrived for pick up. They even included plates, napkins, chopsticks, etc. All I had to do was unload the car and uncover the dishes. Everyone loved the food and I loved that I was able to share my favorite restaurant with a bunch of friends at home. I will not hesitate to order from Teikoku for my next party. read more

Sat at the bar this past Sunday night. Restaurant wasn't very busy, but the wife an I are bar people. So glad we decided to sit at the bar. We had one of the most excellent bartenders we have ever experienced. She talked us in to ordering a red dragon roll and a chay roll as well as some edamame to start with.
