A friend and I went to Tempo on a Saturday night in mid-November around 7:00pm. We wanted something light to eat so went to the bar, where there were plenty of seats. The bartenders were very friendly, attentive, and helpful. We each got a salad and a drink and EVERYTHING was delicious. My salad was the brie and berry salad and my friend had the pear and goat cheese salad. We loved our salads so much that we could have licked our plates! I ate every morsel. The salads came out lightning fast. Our drinks were delicious, too, though mine had a tad too much alcohol in it (I got the blueberry lemonade). I'd like to go back some time and get a sit-down meal. read more

Lastly, they appear to have a single drink menu. They take it from you so they can use it for other tables. They literally cleared plates out from under our bread. The flavors to the food are horrendous IF ANY. I had the tuna and salmon tartare and it was bland large chunks of fish. The chips that came with it didn't even have salt and they were burnt. My husband had the chicken and it tasted like they bathed it in honey only. The shrimp was overcooked and my mushroom risotto was gross. Not to mention our server was so rude. I was able to make a reservation at Tempo last night for a Valentine's Day dinner. I have to say I was very impressed with the experience. The renovation was such a great idea, as it opened up more space. We ordered drinks to start, I ordered the spicy berry margarita, it was alright, I just wish it had more spice and flavor. For dinner, I got the braised short ribs dish which was delicious. My boyfriend got the lamb special, which was fantastic as well. We ordered the apple bourbon creme brûlée for dessert which was very good. I would definitely go back to Tempo, and would easily recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal close to home. read more

I had a great experience at Tempo. The service was a little slow, but the staff were very knowledgable about the food and beverages I inquired about. They had a good variety of local craft beers and spirits of which I sampled a couple. The bartender was very knowledgable about the bourbons on their list, and directed me to a local distillery to go and take a tour of. This is a great new American Bistro. We walked in right after they opened and were told that all the tables had been booked for reservations, but we were offered a table that had a reservation a bit later. We opted to sit at the bar, and had a terrific dinner experience! We started out with the calimari and an offering off the specials menu, chicken fajita spring rolls. Both appetizers were hot and delicious. For dinner we had the hanger steak, and the Portuguese seafood stew. Everyone finished full and satisfied. My husband reported the stew was flavored by a rich broth and the seafood was plentiful. My steak was perfectly cooked, and I enjoyed the scalloped potatoes and asparagus as well. For dessert we split the heath bar bread pudding with ice cream. It was rich and delicious but not too much after such a nice meal. The bartender was very friendly, the beer selection was excellent, and the restaurant was welcoming and comfortable. We will definitely go back when we are in Boston. read more

We met friends for dinner and were very happy with the food and fairly happy with the service. The brussels sprout appetizer was great, while the chicken wings were a bit bland. All our entrees were delicious and very reasonably priced (we had the short ribs, chicken and pasta bolognese.) We all agreed that the food was on the level of many Boston restaurants, but much more reasonably priced. My only small issue with the service was that the entrees arrived too quickly, so we didn't get a chance to take a breath between courses. Our complaint: we were seated at the last 4 person table in the back in front of a glass window which looks into the kitchen. My friend and I were seated facing the window, so the entire time we were watching the kitchen staff working under flourescent lights. We could not see the actual cooking, since the window is high up on the wall. We just saw their shoulders and heads, the stainless steel equipment, the pots and pans, all under the glaring lights that made the room look drab. We asked a waiter why they chose to have this ugly window in what was an otherwise nicely decorated space and he said the owner thought people would like to watch the chefs cooking. I know that there are many open kitchen concept restaurants, but they have warm lighting and the chefs are facing the dining room and you can actually see what they're doing. This was not that. We agreed that it just felt like the worst table in the place. So if you go, ask for a table towards the front and sit facing the street. read more

A girlfriend and I decided to try Tempo last Friday night for drinks and we weren't dissappointed. It was busy and they wouldn't seat us at a table unless we were ordering dinner, but we waited it out and got two great seats at the bar! We had a few beers and tried some of their martini's which were great.....at 9pm they have $7 appetizers at the bar so we shared the cheese steak spring rolls and polenta fries - yummy! My fiance and I came here for the first time this past Monday night. We each ordered a salad and shared a few appetizers. I had the roast beet salad and he had the wedge salad. Both were really tasty - the roast beet salad had a generous amount of boursin cheese on top, and my fiance reports that "the wedge salad was fresh and filling." For appetizers, we got the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls, shrimp and chorizo, seared scallops, and wild mushroom pizza. I don't like Philly cheesesteak, but those egg rolls were the closest I've ever come to enjoying it, and my fiance LOVED them. The shrimp and chorizo were very good. They came out in a tiny, sizzling cast-iron skillet and were served with a sweet ancho chilli sauce. The scallops were amazing, one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. They were sprinkled with a blackened seasoning on the outside and were perfectly cooked - not overdone, as scallops so often are, and terrifically tender. The wild mushroom pizza, on the other hand, was a bit disappointing. Although the description said that it was "drizzled with truffle oil," I couldn't taste any truffle, and the mushroom flavor was underwhelming. Throughout the meal, the service was impeccable. The waitress made sure we were happy with the meal and kept an eye on our water glasses, but was unobtrusive and very friendly. Although the prices are more than we can afford on a regular basis, we will definitely be coming back here when we want a nice meal. read more

Food and service were both excellent. A bit noisy, but not overbearing. Went with wife and niece on a Tuesday around 6PM. No res, but seated immediately, near window looking in to kitchen. Server appeared quickly, took drink orders; returned and answered questions about menu + specials. I ordered Grilled Caesar Salad and the Grilled Sword "Chop"; wife ordered Philly Steak and Cheese Spring Rolls and Pan Seared Faroe Island Salmon; niece ordered the Sunchoke Ravioli special. The niece and I split 18 oysters, which were $1/each on Tuesdays, a nice surprise. Everything was really good, cooked correctly, served correctly and seasoned correctly. Dessert was a warm Peaches Fruit Crisp and a "S'mores in a Jar" special, shared among us. All excellent. In all, a very good meal. The only negative comment, and it's a small one, is that the space is on the noisy side. A little sound suppression would go a long way. read more

Stopped here on a business trip. We're from the south so had to try the fish. Everything was amazing (pimento cheese with the beer bread is perfect), my first time trying mussels (also delicious, the broth was so tasty) and every dish we had was perfect. I have been going to Tempo since they opened years ago. They have done an amazing job with takeout dinners during COVID. We recently had the special dinner with 2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 drinks and 1 dessert. We ate all of the fried calamari on the way home. It was so crisp and fresh with delicious sauces. The other app was the salmon and tuna app - also amazing. The skirt steak was huge and delicious. The halibut was good, but a bit salty. I ordered the "Darling Amelia" which was a really unusual cocktail and I loved it. My husband had the Aztec Bomb -good but a little sweet. The brownie sundae was perfect! We could not eat everything and had the leftovers for another full meal. The restaurant was so warm and cozy when I went to pick up the food. I wished we could stay, but we are not eating inside restaurants yet. This restaurant tries very hard to please and to be creative, while keeping all the favorites on the regular menu as well. An evening out with the wife on Moody St and we decided on Tempo. Kind of a mixed bag. We got there around 8. Through an act of God, we parked right across the street. It was a beautiful night, and we got a table right by the open window in front. So far, so good. The food was pretty good-- feeling fiscally challenged, we had just a few appetizers, as well as a few cocktails. I had the grilled pizza and an asparagus salad that was surprisingly filling; the calamari was good as well. The service wasn't too bad, though our waiter was a real kinetic guy; we nicknamed him Shaky. It was not comfortable in his presence. It was almost like he had 7 cups of coffee before he went to work. And the place smelled like trout, which was one of the specials. So I'm going with a middling rating-- good for access and food; negative for price ($85 for two-- didn't feel like $85 of fun), smell and Shaky. read more

Saturday night; group of five. Nice large table in corner at back.; comfortable seats. The waiter had the specials memorized, and also had a nice sense of humor. He was especially helpful to the vegetarian in our group. He even got the chef to come out, so he could talk with our vegan friend about veggie menu options. The wine expert at our table ordered a Sangiovese blend, and it was perfect. It went well with everyone's dish. I ordered calamari as an appetizer for the group. The batter was a bit under-cooked, but overall it was satisfactory. T For the main course our wine expert ordered the braised beef; I got the "signature sword chop", our vegan friend ordered a combination of items, and two others got some pizza and some macaroni. While everyone expressed how great the food was, I think people held back some minor reservations. For example. I told the people who had invited me that the sword chop was very good. It was actually disappointing. Our wine expert raved about the braised beef, and cut off pieces for others to try. Yes, it was excellent, but..... I can't speak for others, but here's how I saw it: The braised beef was over-priced yankee pot roast. Yes, it tasted great, but I've had great Yankee pot roast for far less. The sword chop was a big disappointment for a signature dish. It was too moist (watery or oily) and also over-priced. I noted the highest raves were for the asparagus, which was cooked perfectly. So, Tempo was ok, and I'd be willing to go again with a group, but I think it is over-priced. I don't understand the fuss. read more

Great Food! BUT... We must have gotten there when it gets slammed on a Saturday. I had to wait 20 minutes for my drink. Waitress apologized. Entrees took about 80 minutes, many apologies from the waitress. She kept saying sorry and that we were the next ticket... that was 30 minutes before they came out. Plus the NOISE! Couldn't talk to the person across the table! When it's all said and done Tempo had some great food but at the same time they should figure out how many they can seat and have the kitchen ready to serve everyone in a timely fashion... Just got back from another outstanding dinner at Tempo! It was busy for a Tuesday, likely a result of a very forward-thinking marketing effort that includes promotions like dollar oysters on Tuesdays and half price wine list selections on Monday and Tuesday (and it's a nicely priced list to begin with). The core menu is all around top notch - high end grass-fed steaks, fresh fish and many affordable options like "small plate" apps and mini-desserts. There is always at least one vegetarian/vegan option. While some of the prices may seem high for Waltham, in actuality they are quite reasonable considering the quality of ingredients and competent execution. The list of daily specials was substantial and varied. Tonight we each had a dozen oysters, with cocktail/horseradish and a light apple-cucumber sorbet. Superb. My wife had the curried tomato soup and the hoisin chicken rolls app, I had the Portuguese fisherman's stew (like a bouillabaisse) - all were fabulous. The service is always good... attentive but not aggressive, with affable, knowledgeable waitstaff who know how to read their customers. We are very grateful to have such a special place located within walking distance! As someone who worked full time in the Boston restaurant scene for a decade (Legal's, Back Bay Restaurant Group) I feel obligated to give Tempo a very strong review and reward them for doing things the right way. read more
