It was good but way overpriced for what it is. Ordered the AAA wagyu and seafood (one of their most expensive plates) and as you can see a majority of the beef looked lower quality than the two pieces on the right side which are clearly AAA wagyu. Not sure if they cheated me or they just cut the beef from a different piece, but the fat content in the beef looks completely different. Service was good and the people are nice but since you're spending $300+ for dinner for 2 I guess they should be nice, right? Another thing I noticed was they said they gave a discount of $20 but the prices on the receipt were $20 more than the menu price... so the discount simply brought the price down to what it was supposed to be.. fake discount lol. Not that it matters to people who can afford to eat at a place like this. Probably won't go back. read more

Excellent service. Located in a plaza that has parking for $6! Make a reservation as seating is limited. The shabu shabu here is very upscale and premium - serving wagyu and seafood. They $188 course gives you three appetizers, two plates of meat + seafood and either rice soup or udon soup to finish the meal. I really loved the desserts! Order one of everything if you can. I highly recommend getting the sake flight - each sip was so sweet and refreshing. Been trying so many times to book this most famous shabu shabu restaurant at Little Tokyo in vain ! for today. Luckily, I got the booking so I can with my friend Betty ! had a really nice time. Enjoy their ambience - we order Wagyu beef , king crab leg, and seafood, draft beer ! everything it's so delicious ! the service is really one-of-a-kind , friendly and considerate, especially they use the leftover soup to cook the congee for us along with the Japanese pickles and the preserve the plum to help digestion! really nice ! we are so full that we thought we can't have anything more. But when the desert comes. It was another amazing surprise ! apple pie with vanilla ice cream, separated by the Filo doll, homemade sorbet raspberry, healthy and delicious. 5/5 top notch shabu. Highly recommend counter seating as watching the chefs work is so entertaining. Would recommend getting the wagyu, king crab, seafood combo for a first visit. The meal is quite filling! We started our meal with oysters, which were half off before 7. We had fresh oysters and baked oysters. I preferred the fresh. The set hotpot meal came with an amuse bouche of sashimi over shisho leaf. The shisho really complemented the freshness of the fish. We then had some sort of soft tofu dish. I wish I knew what it was called because it was my favorite dish of the night. Maximum umami. Then came the shabu shabu course which included a huge plate of veggies like cabbage, enoki, a second kind of mushroom, some sort of water cress or water spinach, spring onion, tofu and glass noodles. The meat platter included a generous portion of wagyu, 3 giant king crab parts, a prawn, 2 scallops and an oyster. The wagyu was perfect and needed minimal time in the hotpot. Went really nicely with the sesame sauce. The seafood went quite nicely with the ponzu sauce. After finishing our hotpot the chef took the broth and made an amazing rice soup and udon soup. One of the highlights of the meal. Finally, we finished with dessert. We ordered the matcha crème brûlée and the banana pie but the chef also threw in a chocolate cake for free. Today's appetizer courses included sashimi, unagi egg custard, roast beef (June promotion), and Chilean sea bass with baby peach. Best meal I had in a while! Worth every penny for such high end ingredients. Rice porridge is a little different than before, it's called rice soup now - but same flavors & still delicious. Finally got the chance to come to this place! Located in the same plaza as Tea Masters and Sushi Gen. We made reservations and was seated promptly. Unfortunately we had to share a pot, but that wasn't a big deal since we shared a meal and hotpot is meant to be eaten together. The staff is exceptional, they are super welcoming and helpful. The appetizer were really refreshing to start: - squid and radish: super light and tasty - halibut and uni: also light and there were so many flavors (salty from the seaweed, freshness from the uni, and this slight natural brine on the fish) - steamed egg with king crab: simple but it was the best app *chefs kiss* We opted for the usda cut + king crab + seafood. I found the meat to be soft yet chewy. The seafood was interesting, not my favorite. The king crab took it away, natural sweetness and so much meat! It comes with rice porridge or udon and usually I would get the udon, but the veggie plate came with noodles already. And I am glad I got the rice porridge because it was super nostalgic. Huge rice and soup fan, so this hits home for me. The dessert was a bit of a let down. I was really excited for the seasonal orange sorbet, but it extremely filled with texture of orange peel? Yuzu? Something...but it made the sorbet super pulpy and bitter. My partner got the green tea creme brulee and that was okay. Green tea was great to end the meal! Intimate, authentic hot pot experience which literally made me feel like I was dining in Japan. The service is super nice and welcoming, and they explained the menu and selections to us Westerners. Some of the flavors were a bit too "foreign" for me, but I tried everything nonetheless (some I liked, some I didn't care for). High marks for the excellent draft beer and the sake we ordered; delicious! The sushi appetizer was extremely high quality, with almost a sweetness to the tuna (two types). Cold roast beef appetizer with onion sauce was very tasty, but I wish they had cut the pieces smaller. Let's talk about the main course: the hot pot (shabu-shabu). We all had the USDA Prime Beef. Meat was all sliced to order (incredible!), along with a mountain of tofu, mushrooms, and green leafy veggies. The meat was tasty, if plain, but the two sauces added some nice flavoring, used sparingly. Noodles and rice soup (your choice) come after, and then the dessert. This is not a place for the masses and not a good choice if you're on a budget. You're going to spend a solid $125 or more per person, easily, plus tax and gratuity. While not every flavor was in my normal wheelhouse, it's a totally unique experience for many of us. If you're adventurous, give it a try; you'll learn a lot and enjoy the experience. read more

I took my wife here for her birthday and it has been one of the best if not the best dining experience I have ever had in LA. We felt right back in Japan when we dined at Tensho. The service was amazing, the server was very kind as the Chef was as well. The chef did an amazing job handling the food as we were able to watch him since we sat at the counter which I highly recommended because it gave a more better experience. Now the food was absolutely amazing, from the course of the appetizers to the shabu meal, then the Chef made us a closer meal, then the amazing dessert menu. The first time I experienced Kagaya was in 2004. I have been a frequent customer since then. When Masa chose to leave back to Japan, I was devastated. Best Shabu Shabu experience I ever had. Then I found out an employee was taking over the restaurant and I was so happy! Everything is the same, same amazing servers and the back house. Authentic fine dining/ shabu shabu. I would say that the meat i chose was a bit overpriced since I thought i would get more crab. The restaurant was small and homey which is perfect for shabu shabu. The service was the best I've experienced in Little Tokyo. Everyone who works there looks like they're passionate about what they're doing and are always down to make your experience better. My pot went entirely black when the clam unleashed a black cloud of sand. They got me a new pot, vegetables, extra crab, and an extra dessert. As alFloridians, it's always been our go-to restaurant whenever visiting LA. The meal is unlike anything we can get in Miami and KaGaYa had always been a staple of ours throughout the years (since ~2004). Happy to report that Tensho is every bit as good as it's former. The food is very tasty and I love that this comes with two small sides which were delicious. Both of them were a type of fish in a miso marinade. The veggies are very fresh but was shocked to find out that the meat plate they gave me was still frozen so all the meat stuck together and I had to put it in the pot as one big piece. If I'm at one of the other shabu shabu locations around Little Tokyo, it's not desired but fine since they're cheaper. This place costs a whopping $90+ for a single serving shabu shabu dinner. Amazing first experience at Tensho! I was so sad to hear that Kagaya closed but it has been reincarnated into Tensho. The three appetizers were unique seafood flavors that were fun to try. We got the angus beef and the wagyu sets. Both were super high quality and melted in our mouths. The vegetable plate was a very generous portion and we chose the udon for our finale.
