I have been here a few times and overall think it's a pretty good place to come back to.....until tonight. Went on a double date with another couple and my fiancé wasn't sure what he wanted to drink. After everyone else had already gotten a round he put in his order for a draft beer. 20 minutes went by of conversation before we realized that he hadn't gotten his beer so we politely reminded the waitress. She apologized and said she would get it right away. 10 minutes went by. No beer. We ended up asking the bartender for one and we had to remind her a third time to grab the drink. I really thought it was a joke and we were on hidden camera. It was slow and we really feel like there was no reason for her to be so absent minded. Especially because it was a basic draft beer. We ended up ordering some food which I was confused by. I ordered chicken carnitas and mole and what came out was pounded chicken breast... whole and the mole was...eh. By that time we were finished with our round of drinks and she asked us if we'd like another. Everyone declined other than my fiancé who opted for another beer.... or AND SHE FORGOT IT AGAIN!! Another server ended up seeing it and just giving the beer to us. I'm sure he's used to picking up her slack. Disappointed because I've really been talking this place up. This was our friends first experience and they will never come back. I feel that if we come back in the future we will forgo the food and just have drinks at the bar. read more

Ate here while in town for work. I had the tacos al pastor. They were very good. But you really need to eat all of the components together. It is a well balanced dish. If you push the cilantro to the side like garnish it really throws off the taste of the dish. As I was a solo diner I had to eat at the bar. The bartender was was nice and service was good but I would have liked a table. There was live music but it was directly behind me so difficult to watch and enjoy. read more

My second time here. I came back specifically to try a certain item that was on the menu that was recommended to me. Unfortunately do to a large party they were hosting the bartender told me that she had been informed that they couldn't make the item I wanted. She went back and checked nonetheless for me and low and behold the owner came back and said they could make it for me. Great effort in going the extra distance for the customer. Service is great and I'm recommending it all my friends who come up to ANC. read more

I came here during lunch, party of 4. The only appetizer option was chips & guacamole. Unfortunately, they used sweet patatoe chips, which we all agreed tasted burnt & just not good. The guac was delicious though. They really aught to use, or atleast add, a regular tortilla chips option. The coconut jicama tacos were very delicious, and not filling. My husband's duck tacos, seemed like beef, to us both, but we let that go, they were good, whatever they were. Our server said they use more tequila in their margaritas than other restaurants...I'm not sure about that. I don't drink, & the three of them agreed that their first drink was good, but not one of them felt a buzz after their second one, which is extremely rare for them. The Mexican brûlée was a tasty dessert. Service was okay, nothing special. We all agreed that we will try again, but for dinner. read more

This has been the worst experience I have had at an Alaskan restaurant by far. As it wasn't enough being talked down to by the staff they would not allow us to get a drink at the bar. They told us we can either gets the drink and gets off the list, or waits for our table without a drink! The expected wait time was 2.5 hrs! read more

Fun atmosphere, very nice staff, good food. We went for taco Tuesday and was pretty pleased with 50% off our tacos. The queso was a little strange... just a plate of mostly melted, viscous cheese with a giant roasted pepper splayed out on top. It came with four small corn tortillas, instead of chips, and they were rather greasy. Not the easiest thing to eat. My veggie tacos were excellent though. read more

Very good service! Slightly expensive where I come from tacos are $1.50. The service was good the food was amazing! The drinks were good and so we're the appetizers. The sweet horchata cornbread is a must try best dessert I have ever had. We definitely will be back. read more

Initially I was going to give this place 5 stars after my first 3 or 4 visits but unfortunately my last few have really left a bad taste in my mouth both literally and figuratively. The food was fantastic when I first went but the consistency seems to be going downhill really quickly. Everything was obviously fresh the first few meals but the last 3 times have been less than stellar. I ordered a salad with Ahi tuna and it came out fully cooked which was odd. I asked about it and the waitress said that's how they normally cook it which is very strange if you're not familiar with this type of fish. Normally it's seared so after I commented she double checked with the kitchen and it turns out they were supposed to sear it. It still tasted fine so I didn't really make any further comments but she was kind enough to have them cook a second piece of fish. After getting the second piece I realized why they cooked it all the way through. The Tuna was obviously old and definitely past it's expiration date. Without going into a lot of detail I can tell you I had quite a few stomach issues after that. On previous occasions I had the duck tacos but again, the quality/freshness of the food seems to have gone down hill. While they started out great, it was definitely greasy and just dripping with oil on the last visit. The last issue I have is the atmosphere, I feel like they're trying too hard to be like every other restaurant. They used to have great Latin music during lunch but have switched to some weird techno all day/every day which I'm not really into. It doesn't make sense and I feel like they're trying too hard to be trendy. I think they just need to be themselves and they would be far more interesting. The only saving grace I've seen so far are the margaritas, they're consistently good if not a bit expensive. I hope they turn it around because at the moment I feel like they're sacrificing quality and originality for profits and trying to fit in. read more

Stopped for lunch the other day. Place was empty. Usually Not a good sign. We decided to stay anyway. We were pleasantly surprised. We had a very enjoyable experience at Tequila 61°. The decor alone was worth the visit, but the food and service were also top-notch. Our visit was on a Friday night, and the noise levels were lively, as was the hip crowd. My new favorite place in Anchorage. If you love Mexican food on the more authentic side, this is your place! Eddie has been my waiter on both visits and he is an excellent guide through the menu. The margaritas are really good.. no mixes here. They're a nice change from the syrupy sweet margaritas usually found in AK restaurants. The crema soup is to die for! Fresh corn, mushrooms and crema. I love it in the summer, I'm seeing myself really loving it in the winter. The tortilla soup is also really good. Everything tastes fresh. Portions are moderate, more like tapas.. not the gut bust people have come to expect at other Mexican joints. I've had the coconut shrimp tacos (amazing, the tortilla is a big slice of jicima), the carnitas tacos(best I've ever had including in Arizona and New Mexico) but the stanout were the duck tacos (I would have NEVER ordered these..be brave, try something new.. you will be so surprised). My friend and I tried the brownie and it was amazing! Homemade fudgy brownie (sorry cakey brownie lovers) with walnuts and housemade cookie crumble with homemade ice cream on the side. BEST follow-up to dinner. Eddie, our waiter, said everything is house made with local ingredients (as available..it's Alaska, kids). Try this place out!! read more

Perhaps it was an off night for the cooks, or maybe it is just how the dishes are prepared. The duck Thai rolls were overcooked, dripping in grease, gummy not crisp. The beef carpaccio was done poorly. The beef was thin and melted in your mouth, I wouldn't know what the flavor was as the balsamic reduction and olive oil overpowered, a heavy hand on these items, it was drenched, swimming in it. I suggest using a high quality olive oil, use a shaker instead of a free pour, eliminate the balsamic, and use fresh ground pepper and sea salt or maybe the Alaska Spruce tip sea salt and capers. The Sushi Mignon was ok but just ok, It is a good idea but again execution is lacking. I suggest getting the pan very hot or use cast iron, sear that meat fast, it was not seared it seemed almost like it was baked, a crispy sear with salt and pepper would make this dish better. The sweet potato chips are nice but quite a few were gummy and stuck together, not crisp, cooking in smaller batches ensuring they do not stick together would be the way to go. I did like the Shrimp Ceviche, it was sweet and tart, the shrimp was very soft, almost melt in your mouth, the thin strips of cucumber really added a brightness. This dish was worth the price, delicious and rather generous in size. The guacamole was also a pleasant surprise, had a little bit of heat which was nice, very fresh and had that citrus tang which keeps it bright green, I did like that it was served with the sweet potato chips. I would also suggest the honey chipotle dressing on any salad but it is served with the Mariner salad, fresh frisee lettuce, candied walnuts, greek olives, parm shreds (I would suggest using parm curls, just bigger or make a parm cracker and serve on top, baby tomatoes. I think this same dressing is the sauce on the popcorn shrimp but since I did not order I can not be certain. All in all it was ok, the music loud, making the restaurant loud. Our server could have been more attentive and really needs some confidence, she was timid, not able to make a suggestion when asked. One beer, 1 margarita, 2 salads, guacamole, ceviche, carpaccio, sushi mignon (6 pieces), thai rolls (3 split) bill total $109, it is about right for downtown. I have mixed feelings, I will probably go back at lunch to see if there is a difference. I would not go back for dinner unless friends want to or I am invited to meet people there. read more

Guac and chips were solid. Had duck and salmon tacos, duck was a bit dry but the salmon was good. Only complaint was the blinding sun that came in thru the windows. Owners could seriously invest in window shades or tint to help block out the sun, particularly by the front entrance. read more

Overpriced and had a "it's just one of those nights" when I asked for a drink on the menu called a Hot Toddy that our server wouldn't even ask the bartender to serve. Then several minutes later we saw that very drink being served to a table who just got sat behind us. When confronted about it, our server then talked to the bartender who THEN offered to make us the drink. By that time we had already lost any desire to try the drink any more because only 10 minutes earlier when I went to change a different drink order less than a minute after I had ordered the server said he couldn't change it, because it was "one of those nights". The food was delicious, the drinks we had were amazing, the service was awful. Even when our food was brought to our table of 8, no one knew where the food even went and none of us changed seats. When this place gets it together they'll be great, last night was a friends birthday and we all left just wanting to GTFO. Went over the Whales Tail where they had amazing service. It's about service Tequilla 61!! Get that together and you'll be awesome! read more

Very hip and trendy addition to the downtown restaurant scene. Service was friendly but slow. Food was great- fun, Mexican/ fusion. But our raw oysters were warm- a bad sign. Rubbish. The menu is rather limited and seafood heavy, so I didn't have much to choose from. I ordered the sweet potato chips with guacamole, but to my disappointment I was served corn tortilla chips no better than store bought and guacamole I am convinced they squeezed out of a bag from Fred Meyer's. I also ordered the pork carnitas tacos. They were tiny and had no side dish, however they were tasty enough after I picked off the pickled onions. The margarita was good, but not $12 good. read more

I was looking forward to Tequila 61 for a special birthday lunch with a co-worker. We had stalked the facebook page with the beautiful photos of the food and found a menu online that we previewed. We were very excited. We arrived around 12:30 pm, the place was practically empty inside with people eating at the tables set up outside. When we got the menu we were disappointed that there were only a few items offered for lunch and not the menu we had previewed. We decided on a couple of choices, but decided to ask if we could get one of the items that is on the dinner menu, but were told no before we had even got the question out. Ok, I get it, maybe since they are new they are just testing the waters with lunch. We ordered the guacamole with sweet potato chips to start, the cheese wrap, and the shrimp tacos, all to share between the two of us. The guacamole came first. The sweet potato chips were very overcooked, pretty much burned, and the guacamole tasted like the pre-made stuff you can buy at Costco, disappointing especially for $9. The shrimp tacos were served on a jicama tortilla, which was really just a thin slice of jicama, not really what was expected and would have been much better on a flour shell with a jicama slaw, but the best of the meal we had. The cheese wrap was also not what we expected, it was literally a wrap of melted and browned cheese stuffed with the pork carnitas. The cheese was tough and hard to cut and took away from the meat inside. It too would have been much better in a flour tortilla, or a flavored flour tortilla wrap. It was very disappointing and marginally edible. We then had the Brownie Abuela for dessert, this was the highlight of our meal. The brownie was dense and fudgy, and delicious, and was accompanied by a mexican chocolate cream with berries and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was the perfect portion to share and was delicious. The service was ok, but the waitress seemed bored with her job and basically uninterested. She asked if we liked the food and when my friend responded that it was okay, she seemed a bit offended. I may try again for dinner some time in the future, but doubt I would come back for lunch. The prices are expensive for the quality of the food. I am hopeful that they will find what works and what doesn't over time. But right now their lunch does not work, and I wouldn't bother. There are way too much competition for a restaurant to just be marginal in Anchorage. read more

From the minute you walk in the door and the very charming and funny host Harrison greets you,with the cool music playing overhead then you look around to the happening vibe,you know it is going to an awesome experience. Let's talk Taco Tuesday. This was my 2nd visit to Tequila 61 and my first Taco Tuesday. For about $6 (half price) one gets three big tacos of their choosing, and nicely presented at that! I had the Baja tacos (beer battered whitefish) and they were the envy of my tablemates. I mean, they were really, really good. I had made a reservation for 15 for a work-related social function and I think all of us were totally impressed with the food, venue and service. When we arrived, our table was prepared and ready for seating. Our server did a great job keeping up with people arriving and ordering tacos and drinks at different times. Being Taco Tuesday made it fun and super affordable with a very good selection of tacos to choose from. The restaurant itself is warm and inviting. I have to express my gratitude to Tequila 61. After signing the check for the whole group, I had left my copy at the table but needed it for business expensing. After my desperate call the following day, management took the time to print a copy of my receipt and email it to me. Saved my bacon! I highly recommend this happy hour and restaurant and I am happy to patronize an establishment that takes care of its customers, even after the sale! Love this place. read more

I have been here 5 times. Three times alone at the bar and 2 times with a date with table service. Four of those times were great - good service and tasty food. But one of the visits was a complete disaster. It was one of the times I chose to eat at the bar. The male bartender was too busy trying to impress two female patrons to serve the rest of the bar patrons (he even started to unbutton his shirt for the ladies - really??). It took him forever to take my drink order, provide a menu, or take my order. And when he finally took my order, he argued about what I wanted (yes, the carnitas tacos are so good I wanted a double order!). I had really enjoyed this restaurant and the food, but this bartender was just beyond rude and coarse. The other bartenders who have served me in the past there were great. Their service was prompt and courteous and they had spot on menu suggestions. Sadly, this one bartender's behavior was so over the top rude that I will not return as long as he works there. A new restaurant downtown has an easy time of it during the summer. Alienating locals might make it more difficult in January. read more

we had the best dinner here last night - I will definitely eat here more often! the drinks were awesome - everyone at the table was pleased. the corn and mushroom soup was fabulous, I had the Tamarind Shrimp with a great tangy sauce, the shrimp ceviche was fresh and had just enough bite mixed with citrus. The guacamole was very well done with tomato and pepper for a good flavor. We had one of each of the desserts which were awesome - although the cajehta creme brulee is a favorite! Our service was wonderful, too. Great spot for a group of friends to watch the game but, would be a nice place for dinner out with my husband. read more
