This is a new restaurant, great menu... Slightly expensive. This is a Mexican fusion with a great European flair. More of a tapa's menu but with additional "large plate" options. The drink menu starts at $12 a cocktail with heavy tequila options and beer, wine as well. We ordered the duck tacos which were small like street tacos, tortilla soup that they poured in your bowl table side and one of the house salads. We had high hopes for this new restaurant with a hip vibe and interesting cocktail list. Unfortunately, our dining experience was probably the worst we've ever had in Anchorage. The cocktails, while decent, were exorbitantly priced for the quantity and quality. If I'm paying $15 for a margarita, it better be the best I've had and should be more than a half filled wine glass. Save your $$ for higher quality cocktails at other establishments like Ginger, where you pay the price but it's absolutely worth it. The food was awful, lacked flavor, or was just uninspiring. We ordered the tartar rosa as an appetizer and had to send it back. The tuna was grey and very fishy and the appetizer appeared like they had made it several days prior and had been storing it in the fridge. Tuna poke or tartar should not have that color. We ordered the salmon tacos and the carnitas. The salmon tacos just lacked any flavor at all. The sauces did nothing to enhance or improve the flavor. It ended up being a mushy, flavorless entree. The carnitas had decent flavor but I've definitely had better at both Serranos and Xalos. We also had a bone chunk in one of our carnitas tacos. The toppings for both taco entrees added zero flavor or texture and were sparse. Overall, we paid $71.50 for a meal that we wish we hadn't even ordered and, given the quality and quantity, should have been half the price. We left hungry and disappointed and stopped to grab some F Street halibut to end our evening on a more positive flavor. read more

Fantastic restaurant downtown. I wouldn't know who to describe their food other than fancy Mexican. So if you're in the mood for a greasy taco or a giant burrito, probably not the place to go. My wife and I are big fans of their margaritas, their rotating appetizer specials, and their tacos. And she loves the architecture of the place, though I find it a bit too "hipster" for my simple tastes. All-in-all, if you're looking for some fancy tacos, I would definitely recommend it! read more

Went (not for the first time) with a few friends and got a few drinks and appetizers, including the oysters. When the oysters came, I saw right away (did not have to look hard at all) that something was off - or rather on - one of the six. And it was moving. I've dug clams and harvested mussels and I understand that there are creatures in the sea and I'm not squeamish, but getting a live, inch-long, many-legged worm on my half shell was a little much. Our first experience here was great. We had a really nice male server and they made sure everything was perfect. We were so excited to share this place and come back with friends. When we did come back with friends our server was rude and disrespectful. She argued with one of of friends raising her voice. Just absolutely rude. We will never go back. We even spoke to the manager and he said that he never had a problem with that our server basically said we were wrong and it was our fault she yelled at our friends. Horrible customer service, we'll just because you never had a problem with her doesn't mean you're never going to have a problem with her. But whatever. No tip for her. The is a Mexican American fusion restaurant in downtown Anchorage. The decor is nice and the food is good, some of the people I went with complained it was a bit pricy for the amount of food, but I liked the portions were manageable. Also the drinks are very well done they might have the best margarita in Anchorage and if you are interested in Mezcal the bar manager is super informative and will take the time to explain the making process. All in all a good time if you are down town and want a nice happening meal. read more

Impeccable service. When you come in ask for Baylee at the bar or to sit in Sierra's section. They will take care of you sum'in fierce. The food was Mexican and it was clean. Food was pretty good. Jalapeño salad was really good. The thai rolls were also tasty. The bartender recommended the carnitas tacos, and they weren't bad, but could have had some sort of slaw or veggies in there. Service was adequate, but nothing to write home about. I was a little disappointed in getting a $16 manhattan in which the the only thing special is they light a match under the glass to produce that sulfur-ish smoke. All the cocktails seemed overpriced, and honestly I'd rather get a killer margarita at Beartooth for almost half the price. After getting weekend ready I headed to Tequila 61. This place is brand new but I understand the owner has other spots so they know what they were doing when they opened this one- absolutely right! Tequila 61 is "gastropub" with southwestern flavors. And yes they have plenty of tequila! The Avista cocktail is vodka and gin etc. can't remember it all but it was light, not too sweet and plenty tasty. Started with the guacamole, a safe choice. No extra fresh jalapeño but good flavor with a spicy sauce on the side upon request. Our waiter was spicy too. Eddie was straight out of central casting with a muscle T and the muscles to match, black wavy hair with just enough gel and when he rolled his "Rs" the earth moved. There's a super great DJ so at this point I could've been happy with cocktails, treats for the eyes and ears but I was hungry. Salmon tacos, Carnita tacos, popcorn shrimp and I can die happy with the mignon sushi! Everything was outstanding! Full bodied flavors and perfect portions. I thought the tapas menu would leave me wanting but no fear there. This was more than enough for 2 which was unfortunate because I would have loved another order of the Mignon sushi. Thinly sliced strips of filet mignon rolled around asparagus with a bit of a flavorful sauce. The meat just melts in your mouth leaving you sad that the experience is over. read more

Tequila 61 is amazing! The atmosphere, itself, is worth stopping in for a quick drink or one of the tapas. It reminds me of the trendy, quality restaurants in DC, Seattle, and Chicago. Everything we had was wonderful: carpaccio, guacamole, cerveche, tacos, chiccharon (beware this is spicy...burn your nostrils spicy, make you cry hot), creme brûlée, and the horchata cornbread. If you want to watch the bartenders shake martinis, it's a great place to go. If you want food, stay away. The halibut tacos took 30 minutes and it was a piece of halibut in each of the 3 tacos and a whole bunch of lettuce and cabbage. It was really bad. Had a coupon for a BOGO taco meal. Was recommended by hotel staff. Arrived, and was told the coupon was good for all but the duck confit tacos, so happily ordered blackened salmon and carne asada. Also ordered 2 margaritas and some ceviche, a $14.00 appetizer! Drinks were worse than slow, and place was not busy. Was told bartender was new, and apologized for delay. Tacos arrived, minus any sides, and was told rice or beans were an extra $4.00. Passed. Tacos were actually quite good, and live music was good, so we ordered another couple margaritas. Well, finally asked for our bill and I reminded her of the coupon. She comes back and says she's sorry, but the coupon is expired. I literally was given the coupon 5 days earlier, so I questioned, of course, and there was in fact a deadline; the coupon was only good for the weekend of Iditarod, the busiest weekend in anchorage (good luck getting into ANY restaurant)! She apologized and said it wouldn't work. A $12.00 taco meal... Yeah, we we're NOT happy, and I explained that I showed her the coupon before even placing first order. We not only bought $40.00 in drinks, a $14.00 app, but now she couldn't even honor a taco dinner coupon merely 2 days expired? I went right back to concierge at The Voyager, who had initially recommended, and he also believed they should have honored, as well as my friend/owner of the Slippery Salmon restaurant. These are locals and they are now aware that the customer service was completely sub par, and both will no longer recommend Tequila 61 to visitors. A coupon to ramp of business is a great idea, but to see it, and then not honor it after a meal.... No!! Tacos and ceviche were not bad, but customer service was horrid, and service was slow. (4/6/18) Visiting my daughter who's just returned from deployment (Air Force). She raved about the duck tacos. The hostess took one look at us and her demeanor changed from pleasant to sour. I know that look...One daughter has a big curly afro and the other was wearing a beanie. All the sudden the foyer had become "too dark" for her liking. She asked if we had a reservation and my daughter replied are reservations required? She spewed back "no, but it is a Friday". I thought well damn...It's only 5pm plus the website extends an open invitation to enjoy their happy hour. She said "one moment" - disappeared to the back and came back with a manager (I assume)! He was a man of color with curly hair. He looked at us, smiled, greeted us and told her to seat us. Now all of the sudden she had availability. She scoffed "follow me". Upon entering the dining area I saw several open tables and the bar had plenty of seating. Wasn't full at all! Bad service & disrespect doesn't fly with me but I didn't want to spoil our time together. I'm proud that they sensed it too. My daughter and I have served our country (military). It is disgusting to be disrespected based on appearances. We decided to spend our money elsewhere. We left and walked across the street to Hard Rock Cafe where the hostess greeted us like she was happy to have us and the service/ food was great. Being from Texas I wasn't missing anything...Tequila and tacos is what we do best! read more

The decor inside is nice...super hipster/trendy & they were able to accommodate us - group of 8 last minute walk-in (granted it was around 10 though) while the others in the neighborhood gave us a cold shoulder (Haute Quarter, Hard Rock...), so kudos on the customer service side which included our excellent server. The food was delicious & the entire party seemed to enjoy what they ordered...there were a couple of misses....the scallop app that you have to finish cooking over the flame?? Don't know how long that will last. The shrimp ceviche was great but I'm confused as to why they gave us hard-ass pieces of bread with it. The taco's were delicious - had the good ol'fashioned meat ones. Simple but with good flavor. My biggest irk is probably the $14 charge for a margarita. In a wine glass. Hold on, let me rephrase...in a wine glass but only filled half way. First off, I don't mind paying the 14 bucks for the fancy house drinks with homemade lemonade or scratch made simple syrup, I get it...you're competing with other dining establishments with hoighty toighty-overpriced-hipster named-infused with dandelion-"I'm a professional mixologist" made drinks, but you, Tequila 61, are a Mexican restaurant where people go to enjoy tacos & margaritas. Fleecing the customer for a staple such as the margarita, which is one of the elementary drinks in a bar's stock, is a crime. For Anchorage this place is unique and great! Reminds me of somewhere In Seattle I'd go to. We made a reservation just to be safe on a Saturday night. Tried this place with another couple and really enjoyed the atmosphere and decor. The restaurant feels like one you would find in the downtown of a bigger city. Drinks were great. The margarita with the ginger base was one of the best I've had. We really enjoyed the shrimp tacos and the scallops. The plate sizes aren't huge, so you can end up spending quite a bit depending on how you order. The quality was high and we enjoyed the creative menu. read more

First comment- this place is much too loud! I felt like I was clubbing. I understand the modern restaurant scene, but trying to have a conversation here sucks. (Maybe it's different during the week and not a Friday night) I had the classic margarita- it was good, but not amazing. My friend and I both ordered tacos- the shrimp and the salmon. I liked the shrimp better! We also had guacamole, which was decent, but the sweet potato chips were a little too burnt to enjoy. Overall, this place was fine. Great happy hour and dinner menus. Chorizo empanadas came with the most delicious chipotle sauce. Rice and beans that came with the enchilada entree were well seasoned.
