There are things you generally take for granted in your day to day life that you simply don't appreciate, but without life experience, how could you? I'd argue that your local takeout spot is at the top of this list. You move away and miss it more than you could have ever imagined. You try to find a substitute, but they just don't make your go-to dish QUITE the same. Something's missing, something's off.......... Well, I'm sure you can see where this is going, but Terra Thai is my local takeout spot. My life raft. My lighthouse in a storm. This large Basil Chicken Plate medium spice is essentially keeping me alive at this point, as I have it AT LEAST two times a week. It is a MOUND of carefully seasoned flavorful chicken, a side of white rice, an egg, and broccoli. There is no beating it. It is the equivalent to a home cooked meal and is the perfect post workout meal. It is the sole reason that Terra Thai is my starting PG on my All-NBA Lower East Side restaurants. We are at the point now when I call in to place my order, Aung, the owner, answers with a "Hi Johnny!!" and it brings a smile to my face every time. I go in and we chop it up, she asks how work is, how my friends are, how life is going, etc. I always give her a hug on the way out...she is essentially my east coast Granny at this point ahaaha.... damn I miss my Granny... Also I've become cool with one of the employees in there, shoutout to my guy Yoshi always showin love! So am I a little biased? Yeah maybe, but you're off your rocker if you think I would come here as often as I do if that large Basil Chicken Plate didn't SMACK like it does. I literally price things in Basil Chicken Plates these days... I'll be out at Flower Shop or Ding-a-Ling and think "Yeah I could buy this drink rn but that's really a full Basil Chicken Plate at Terra Thai..." Sometimes you have to go through deep pain in order to appreciate true greatness. You have to wander and be lost in order to know when you've found something special. You have to lose that Fire Grilled Chicken Salad from Cafe Rio in order to appreciate the large Basil Chicken Plate from Terra Thai. Andy Bernard put it better than I ever could when he said "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good ole days before you've actually left them." I wanted Thai and this came up in the East village near our activity that day. This is really a to go place with only 2 seats at a little counter. However it's quite festive in there. Food was awesome. $50 for two included soup entree and a drink. You can also go to a park and eat nearby if the counter is taken. I highly recommend the food. Revisited Terra Thai recently for an easy dinner and found that they now have a new grab and go concept, where there are a couple of displays with ready to eat, pre-cooked meals in take out boxes. The idea is to come in, grab what you want from the display, pay and you're on your way. While I'm sure this alleviates a ton of work for the kitchen, I'm sad that I won't be able to get fresh food from Terra Thai. We grabbed some drunken noodles and green curry from the display (reluctantly, because we fully expected to get some fresh food when we stopped by) but they made an order of pad see ew on the spot because they were out of it on the display. Maybe the hack is to come when they're out of what you want on display so that they'll make it fresh? We took the food home and for some reason, the meal just didn't hit home like it used to. The flavors were a little bit bland and flat, particularly the green curry and pad see ew. Overall, I wasn't very impressed and with so many other Thai restaurants in the area, I'm not sure if I would come back. It's such a bummer because this used to be one of my favorite spots for take out! read more

One of my favorite Thai restaurants in the LES! It's a small family owned business and the service is always top notch and you are always greeted with a friendly smile. My go to is always the Tom yum which is full of coconut flavor and the drunken noodles that my husband said it's the best he had in the area. The best chicken pad thai in east village (at this price). The noodles are elastic, the peanuts are plentiful, the chicken is flavorful and cooked to perfection. Even the bean sprouts and lime taste fresh. Walking into the store and I am immediately greeted with an amazing aroma. The food is piping hot and was ready in under 10 minutes. I ordered 20 minutes before close, I can only imagine how good it is earlier in the day. This is a take out place. There is not much seating (2 stools) and the shop is easy to miss, but the service is fantastic. I believe it was the owner who took my order and prepared it (his face is on the walls). The food is SO good. My go to is the drunken noodles with shrimp or the one with curry (I can never remember the name. Ong (I believe is the owner?) is always working the front and extremely sweet. She'll never steer you wrong with recommendations. The place is tiny and only has space for maybe 2-3 people max to eat inside so take out is best. But if you can ever secure a spot inside it's worth it! The plants make it feel so homey. read more

This place was phenomenal. It's a super cool takeout Thai spot that's hidden in the east village. To be honest I've always been hunting for good Thai spots in the EV, and none have wowed me, except this place. My chicken pad Thai was so good and I asked for it spicy and they made it spicy. The shumai was excellent too and all the workers were so kind. My only only only complaint was maybe a little bigger on the portion size for my pad Thai. But I'm just a hungry guy and love leftovers. The price is so good at $13 for the choices of chicken or tofu, and $15 for shrimp. The noodles were actually thinner than I was used to, but I liked the difference. I'm not a huge fan of Thai but this place changed my mind. I crave their food ! I got the chicken satay dish , the braised pork and a Thai iced tea. The chicken satay is different from what Is usually served as an appetizer in other Thai restaurants. Terra Thai's is more of a meal as it's chicken sautéed then cooked in peanut sauce. It comes with pickled veggies which cuts out the richness from the peanut sauce. As suggested by them, I had a baguette and I dipped the bread into the peanut sauce bc it's sooo flavorful The braised pork dish is something I never had nor saw on any other Thai menu. It's has more of a home cooked taste which I love. The pork is SUPER tender and the accompanying rice with an egg and mustard greens makes a great home cooked meal. In fact , bc the place is so tiny and literally just a kitchen with a counter for pick up and a register it really does fell like you're visiting a little neighborhood shop in Thailand. This may be one of the best thai I've ever had. Life changing. I got the basil chicken and my friend got the drunken noodles and both were incredible. So flavorful and reasonably priced! They still took our order even though we came close to closing, which was very kind. In the 10 minutes we waited for our food many people came in to pick up their takeout- which is always a good sign of a great spot! The decor inside is really cute- I loved the plants with the little people statues in them- but definitely more of a takeout spot. A small and cozy restaurant located on a side street in the East Village. As you walk in you'll immediately feel a sense of comfort. The restaurant gives off a home vibe. From the family-style table to the scattered books on the bookshelves, it brings back many memories from my childhood. There isn't really much space to sit, so you'll have to take the food to go. Fast service, generous portion and affordable! Called ahead of time to order 2 Pad Thai (1 Tofu and 1 Chicken) and they told us it'll be ready for pick up in 10 minutes. Was food always prepared this fast?? I only dug in after an hour over my brother brought it back home so my food was nearly cold EVEN SO, it was still good! Imagine what it would taste like fresh, yum. Noodles do clump and stick together but they were not mushy and well-cooked. The flavor was there and I liked how they weren't very oily. Caution for those with peanut allergy! The spirtz of lime on the noodles was the perfect touch. I didn't even finish it all but I was so stuffed. I don't like giving bad reviews but I also feel like the overwhelmingly positive reviews misled me and may have set expectations too high, so here's something to balance it out. I ordered vegetable pad thai, which for the same price as chicken, I thought would come with an interesting mix of veggies, but only came with broccoli and butternut squash. For the pad kra pao, this came with a thick layer of oil that I haven't seen in pad kra pao dishes from other Thai restaurants. There was not so much a strong basil flavor as a somewhat fishy flavor. I don't like wasting food but only took two bites of this. I ordered on UberEats so maybe the in-person experience is nicer and that's what everyone loves, but food-wise, it was underwhelming. read more

This just keeps getting better! Flavorsome, high quality shrimp are now option on most dishes on the menu. The coconut pancakes are essential: light fluffy little cakes with an ever so slightly sweet rich coconut flavor, punctuated by shredded coconut. My friend said they were the best thing she's ever eaten. Personally prefer them without the sesame seed garnish. As for the Bah Jang--sticky rice cooked in pork broth with peanuts and dried shrimp--what an exciting collection of flavors! Oh, and now regularly order the shrimp pad Thai (without the raw sprout garnish)--though must admit that the slightly spicy San Jan Drunken rice noodles are even better. read more

Terra Thai is a tiny, pocket-sized takeout spot in the East Village. It is a hidden gem and one of my new favorite eateries in NYC. I'm a HUGE fan of Thai food so I'm quite critical when it comes to this cuisine and who prepares it. After reading the rave reviews online and seeing their 4.9/5-star rating, I just knew I had to give this spot a try. Plus it's just around the corner from the 24-hour Key Food I've been going to for years. From the first impression, Terra Thai is reminiscent of a tiny, family-owned restaurant that you would see in Thailand (I've vacationed in Thailand three times already). I was provided great customer service with a smile. I loved their incorporation of greenery outside and inside of the restaurant. Just beautiful! I ordered the ever-popular Pad Si Ew, an iconic Thai stir-fried noodles. To say it was superb is an understatement. Some of the best I've ever had. Wow I found my new go to Thai takeout spot! I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and I'm mad I didn't try it sooner. We ordered the Sen-Jan drunken noodles and the pad see yew. Both had a great light spicy heat to them. The food was delivered to us still very hot, which was great. Also if you're lucky enough to see the mango sticky rice available, do not hesitate in getting it. I saw on their instagram they only make them if the mangoes are perfect and they were really were! At the end of the day it's street food Thai not sit down/fancy Thai so don't expect a nicer restaurant quality. A little too greasy but other than that the food was great. I don't know how else to describe it other than the flavors taste fresher and more flavorful than other Thai takeout places. Highly recommend! read more

I was so excited to try out Terra Thai, as it seemed like a small family-owned hole in the wall spot, but was a bit disappointed in the dishes that we ordered. We ordered Pork & Shrimp Shu Mai, Pad Si Ew, and Pad Thai for pick up. The food and service was so speedy and efficient. It was ready when we got there. The Shu Mai was pretty good - just your standard take out dumplings. But the Pad Si Ew and Pad Thai lacked in flavor compared to other Thai restaurants around the city. The Pad Si Ew was slightly more flavorful than the Pad Thai, but both were pretty mediocre. I really wanted to like this place - but it didn't do it for us! read more

This was one of the best meals I've had in 2021 - maybe THE best? I stopped by to get a few takeout items to eat in the park, not expecting anything special, and everything was exceptional. Walking in to order is like entering a granny's kitchen complete with knick knacks and tiny plants in the window. Adorable... I was in love at first sight. Drunken noodle with shrimp - I ordered this with wide noodles instead of the thin noodles on the menu and it was hands down the best pad kee mao/drunken noodle I've had in the city. Great balance of spice, perfect chewy noodles and super fresh shrimp. I seriously didn't want to share. I will be back to eat their drunken noodles ALL THE TIME Congee - big hit with my toddler who was happily gobbling it up. Nice savory flavor, not too salty, the pork meatballs had a tasty little zing going on. Great for those days when you want something comforting and homey or if you don't have a full set of teeth ;) Thai tea - finally I found a place that brews tea strong without making it too sweet. I love that Terra Thai feels like a home cooked meal, which isn't anything like the generic Thai food spots around NYC that partly resemble Asian fast food. You can definitely tell the care that goes into Terra Thai's dishes. I also love that they serve some unique dishes like the kanom krok/coconut pancakes and bah jang/savory sticky rice. Their braised pork was incredibly mouth watering and reminded my of home. I also had their kra prow, which was delicious and accurately spiced. Of course, they also offer crowd favs like pad Thai and drunken noodles! If you're in the neighborhood, this is 100% a place you need to try. read more

Pad Thai is good but spicy. I haven't tried other dishes but am curious. I normally like Spicy food but this spice took away from the dish.
