We wanted to change up Thanksgiving dinner this time. It's been a busy year, so we really needed that extra time to not cook or heat up food. We were content with the large family pack option that included 6 lbs of meats and 5 quarts of sizes. It was very easy to pre-order online, and the food was ready for pick-up at the scheduled time. The sliced brisket was very juicy and fatty. I really enjoyed the seasoning of the turkey. The green beans, potato salad, and mac & cheese were pretty average tasting. If you have a sweet tooth, go for the banana pudding - it's so good! I will say I typically am not a fan of coleslaw, but actually liked this from Terry Black's. The large family pack we bought was meant to feed 10-12 people, but we purchased it for five people to have leftovers. Plus, we all treated ourselves to a second plate. I've been in Texas for roughly two years now and I can say that Terry Blacks is by the thee best Texas BBQ period. It is the only place I'll eat cornbread, the meats are so juicy and tender with the maximum/perfect amount of flavor, and the rice and Mac are cooked to perfection The set up is essentially a school kitchen line, sides starting first moving into desserts, then finally the main courses of meats or sandwiches. The staff have always been super sweet and friendly. Windows line the dining areas so it makes it feel super open and bright, they also have extra seating in a back room and the porch as well! It is open seating but they have plenty of room to accommodate all of the guests that come to share with family. I've eaten at Terry Black's in the past. This was my first time at the one in Fort worth. Didn't even know it was here till I past by a few nights ago. Walked place is really nice, but the prices scared the hell outa me! I'm all for good BBQ but dayum! $17 for a brisket sandy! I ordered a half lb of brisket and 1/3 of original sausage. The brisket ended up a lil more than 1/2 pound and the sausage ended up being a full link. Individual cost $22.93 for the brisket which I expected more or less but the sausage for 1 link was $13.20! That is crazy! I mean the sausage was tasty but not $13 tasty! Brisket was moist and tender smoked very well! Flavor was on point also. Original sausage was really good also. It had a nice crunch to the casing taste was great. Really can't talk smack about the food it was fantastic as always. Definitely couldn't come to DFW without having some BBQ, and my friends swear by Terry Blacks. They have a parking lot but it was full when we came on a Saturday evening around 6pm so we parked on the street. You order at the counter first and pay before finding seating. There's a lot of indoor tables though in certain sections, they may be a bit tight. We were still able to easily grab a table for our group of 5. We opted for the family meal with multiple types of meats and 4 types of sides. My personal favorite was the brisket and the jalapeno cheddar sausage. They have self service napkins, utensils, to-go boxes and a drink dispenser. Someone came by to clean up once we were heading out. We had the servers Becca and Jesus, and they were fantastic. Both gave us great advice on the barbecue--Jesus especially helped me choose my meat and even cut sausage lightning fast. The guy's seriously talented. Becca, on the other hand, was just such a kind soul and made the whole experience better. Now, onto the food. The brisket was more fatty than usual and lacked flavor--even the crust didn't have much of a char flavour or seasoning. Honestly, it tasted like very basic brisket, which was disappointing given all the reviews. The sauces at the table were fine, but the "spicy" one was basically ketchup. Hashtag disappointed. The mac and cheese was way too salty, likely from the noodles, and the cheese sauce tasted like a mild nacho cheese with the same texture. The potato salad leaned heavily on dill, which I didn't mind, but it's definitely a strong flavor not everyone would go for. The clear standout: the smoked sausage. It was flavorful, had the perfect texture, a crispy casing, and a smoky-peppery balance that was just excellent. Truly the star of the meal. The ambiance was nice and there was a certain Texas buzz in the air. Clean nice place. Overall, I wouldn't call it outright disappointing...but it didn't live up to the hype. The brisket and mac? Terry Black's came highly recommended so we had to make a stop. We arrived during lunch time and the place was packed. They also have an outside patio but only one party was out there. They also have the smokers located off the side of the patio so I knew I wasn't going to sit out there. Once inside you start off in line to choose your side items. Hot sides then cold sides. We decided on the Mac and cheese, Mexican rice and cream corn. We skipped cold sides but did get the pickles, red onions and a couple slices of white bread. My niece also wanted to try a pickled jalapeño. The jalapeño is an extra charge while the pickles, red onions and white bread are complimentary. Then off to meats. You move to another area and select your meats. They had a few items out to choose from. We saw beef ribs, pork ribs and brisket out. So we selected those three. We just got a small sampling of each item. All of your meats are weighed and then you pay. Our small sample tray totaled over $100. After reviewing the order I saw that the beef rib alone was $60!!!!!! It was only 1 bone but it was hefty! So I quickly had it removed. I added the jalapeno and cheese smoked sausage instead. On each table is a caddy holding 3 bbq sauces. The flavors are original, sweet and spicy. I sampled original and sweet. They were both good. The side items were ok. I would said the best one we got was the creamed corn.it was sweet and creamy. The Mac and cheese was very bland and the noodles were hard. The Mexican rice was ok nothing stood out to me about it. It had a bland flavor. The pork rib was seasoned well. There was a sweet and smokey crust on top of the ribs that made the ribs so tasty. The ribs don't need any sauce they are perfect by themselves. The brisket was a good medium between lean and fatty to me. I enjoyed the sweet sauce with the brisket. I didn't get to try the sausage. My nephew really enjoyed it and it wasn't spicy to him. The pickles are very sour and the red onions are just raw and not pickled. On the way out one of the pit masters answered some of my nephews questions and even opened the smokers and gave us a view of the briskets. That was a nice experience. Overall I enjoyed the bbq. I'm regretting putting back the beef rib but we didn't finish what we ordered and I didn't want to waste that amount of money. I'm still not sold on Texas bbq. This place has really good brisket! The food is a bit pricey so I didn't get much on my first visit but it definitely looks worth it. Finally made it to Terry Black's today. I love walking down the trademark entrance to a Terry Black's store past those big, badass, offset smokers. It a beautiful thing! This is the third Terry Black's we've visited. We've been to the Dallas store a good number of times and Lockhart once. As you know if you follow Texas BBQ, Terry Black's is owned and operated by Terry's kids Mike, Mark and Christina. Terry was ousted in an apparent coup from the original Black's, started by their father in the 1930's in Lockhart, by his brother Kent. (If you've not seen "Family Beef" the 90 min documentary produced by KXAN Austin, and Texas Monthly go directly to You Tube and watch!). Anywho, Terry's sons opened first the store in Austin and named it after their dad. Then they opened stores in Lockhart, Dallas and now here that I know of (Waco?). All the Terry Black's stores cook on offset stick burners as opposed to gas assist rotisserie cookers. (I encourage and invite you to take the TrueCue Pledge at TrueCue.com) Terry Black's has been rock solid at every single visit in every location. I cannot comment on sides as we never order sides. They just get in the way of what we're after which is really great smoked brisket and pork ribs. We can make sides that we enjoy more than most any restaurant's. We go to offset smoker barbecue joints to enjoy outstanding smoked meat. And the brisket today was off the chain. You know the barbecue review routine descriptions on bark, smoke, texture, etc., etc., etc. I'll not repeat. I'll just tell ya this is all of that on steroids. Ribs likewise were so, so good. I much, much prefer joints that cut right there in front of you as they do here. Today, for example, I requested a half pound of brisket from the point and a pound of ribs. The half rack on the board was from the short (brisket) end. The cutter cut two from that remaining middle section and started to cut the last two or three from the small end. I asked, "May I, is it possible to cut the rest from the long end of a rack? " "Sure", he said. I've never had a cutter respond any other way to a request at the board. After that he tossed the entire remaining tip of the point on the already weighed tray! That tip was pure barbecue gold. Maybe a best ever portion of smoked brisket. No, really Speaking of which, every single associate that we dealt with here was exceptionally pleasant and accommodating. In fact there at the sides bar where you begin in a Terry Black's one gal could see we were looking around for something. We told her we were not seeing any white wine options (lots of beer on ice and bottles of red wine). She came all the way out around the counter and then went over to a small bar-like area by the entrance to check and came back to tell us there was no white wine. Also, I was told, "Thank you for coming" by a table busser as I emptied my tray in the trash. These employees clearly care about their restaurant! There is clearly a healthy culture being cultivated among the employees in these stores. And making customers happy, begins with making employees happy. The Dallas store has a bar where in addition to the bottle and can beers in the service line there is beer on tap and individual bottles of various wines, including white. The small bar here would never accommodate that set up, but on the way out we spoke with the very pleasant gal there and she said the individual portions of wine are forthcoming. The first let me tell you the cream corn is a must the playroom the seasoning just perfect. The beans were okay but I expected more. No it was full of me pork and beef but it just lacked a good flavor will taste to me. The side of onions and pickles were very good. They were crunchy and fresh. Oh yeah the barbecue sauces they're the real deal. Now the jalapeno sausage and cheese is cooked to perfection he just got a nice little spicy kick and it's to other similar. I must say the two sides and the one meet the jalapeno sausage is filled me up. I don't if I can get to the peach cobbler in the beef rib.But I am going to try. Peach cobbler was the bomb the right amount of crust the right amount of peaches the right amount of seasoning they know what they're doing. Terry Black's knocked it out of the park. Their brisket was fall apart tender and juicy, but their turkey was to die for. You could easily cut through it with your fork it was seasoned just right and just so juicy. I'm not the biggest turkey fan and I'd come back just for that. Their cornbread was moist and the right amount of sweetness. The potato salad had both the tanginess and creaminess you'd want from a good one. The green beans were seasoned and weren't overcooked so they had great texture. It was easy enough to line up, tell the butcher what you wanted as they sliced and weighed it out for you then find a table. I liked their spicy and regular bbq sauces as well. Good complements to the meats. It's the usual bbq vibes inside but man, it's so cool seeing the smokers lined up as you walk towards the entrance and seeing all the meats cooking out getting ready to be cooked. read more

I went to Terry Black's quite late on a weekday for some quick BBQ before a conference, and I am so glad that I took the trip over! The entire space is warm and welcoming, and everyone there was really kind and knowledgeable about BBQ! I can't eat much by myself, but they were great in recommending what they thought I would enjoy. I ended up getting the brisket, and it was SOOOOOO good!
