We came here and had the fajitas. The service was okay because they were slammed at the bar. They got better after it slowed down. We eat fajitas a lot! We usually go to Santa Rita for fajita Monday because it's a good deal. But after coming to Texican and having their fajitas, I don't think we will be going back to Santa Rita. I guess you don't know any better until you have a direct comparison. Texican's fajitas were very flavorful. They also have homemade tortillas. Great salsa. And they give a lot of food. We always enjoy Texican- this is the closest to El Paso Mexican food that we have found, every other place is Tex Mex. We order regularly pick up because of Covid and their food is still as good as it is as if we had eaten in the restaurant. read more

Great weekday specials! I'm a huge fan of enchiladas specials and fajita specials! Mexican martinis are solid and refreshing. Wait staff is consistently kind and helpful. Since they've renovated the floors and tables, it feels more open and clean and inviting. Old carpet was gross and the air was stagnant and suffocating inside! So happy for the interior changes and even happier that the food quality hasn't changed or been compromised in the price. Tortillas are delicious each time too which is saying something as someone from San Antonio! Always a reliable go to after a long day at work. Very kid friendly and patient wait staff too. read more

My family and I have dined here easily 30 times. Tonight, we were meeting my in-laws driving in from Amarillo and just as tradition, we were going to meet at The Texican! The food has always been great and it's become a tradition for us. My wife and I were very excited for the delicious fajitas! However, tonight was the last time we will ever attend. We arrived at 7:30 and were told there was a 30 minute. However, the host said if we see a table in the bar or outside on the patio, then grab it! So we waited about 15 minutes, saw a table outside, and grabbed it. From that point, our experience went downhill. Not exaggerating, we waited 20 solid minutes before we were ever acknowledged. No water, no chips or salsa, no drink order, nothing! When we finally got a drink order in, we waited another 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. By this time, we so hungry that that I had to stop the waiter from running away and say that we have to order! We got the order in (thank god) which came out wrong with 2 of our 4 orders. We never saw the server again and we were so hungry that we just decided to just eat and deal with it. It was obvious that this was a bad experience so I wanted to let a manager know about what had happened. I went to the host stand and said I would like to talk to a manager. She said "Well, that's the owner standing right there, would you like to talk to him?" I said "Absolutely!" I would think that him above anyone would love to hear about this! The "owner" reluctantly approached and I told him that we had dined here multiple times (30 at least) and today was disappointing. I told him that I ever received a plate for my fajitas and I had to use my napkin as a plate! Trust me, I was upset about this too but I thought I would tell the owner! His response: "Hey, you need to shut up! I don't believe you! There is no way you ate off your napkin!!" I said "Sir, I would love to show you my napkin(plate) where I just ate dinner!" He said "you are a liar and I don't want you ever to come back here!" I said "I have been here so many times and have loved your food and it really sucks that you just told me to never come back." He walked away and that was that. I returned to my table and my family defeated. Because we were on the patio, I saw the owner walk out of the front door. I said "Sir, I would love to show you my napkin (plate) since you don't believe me!" He kept walking. We watched as he got into his Range Rover, or Land Rover, honestly I can't afford either one of those and can't tell the difference between the two. He sat there in his running car for the next 20 minutes as we waited for our check. Our check arrived with a manager and he said "From me to you, I'm sorry. I know the owner is hard to deal with, but I'm sorry. The owner just TEXT me and wanted to apologize!?!?!" What?!?! Seriously?!?! This guy is in his Range Rover, I can see his car running, and this is how he deals with it?? Ugh...... I know this was a long review but jut wanted to get it out there. We have always loved this place but will absolutely never be back. I've spent over $1,000 here but will happily spend my money at many of the other delicious Austin restaurants instead of here. I see thousands of people on a weekly basis on my job and I will make sure to tell them NEVER to attend this awfully run place! read more

Very disappointed tonight. Had to call an order in because the online feature was unavailable. When we called we were placed on hold, then after five minutes were hung up on. Regrettably we called back and placed an order. We arrived at the stated time and when we called we were told they were packing up our order. After waiting an additional 20 minutes I went to go inside when a sever at another car came over and collected the money. After an additional 8 minutes she came out to the truck and said someone took our order, but they would prepare another order. Yeah right...people just walk in and take food! We asked for a comp, but they choose to give us our money back and sent us on our way. We promptly drove to a much better restaurant in downtown Buda near Cabelas...check them out! You lost our business permanently y'all are a poor excuse for a business. Everyone go elsewhere! read more

This is one of our favorite places to eat. The food is pure Texmex. It starts with the chips and salsa and ends with the last bite as delicious as the first. I love the San Antonio Enchiladas. Tender Carne Guisada over cheese enchiladas with your choice of beans, rice and pico de gallo. Mmmm mmmm. They also have wonderful fajitas, seafood, and other Mexican food. We love it. read more

Service was VERY good. Ace was very good at being a ninja. It was almost as if he wasn't there but all of our needs were met. We went for a very large family dinner and it was nice to not be bothered a ton. But the food.... I've given this place three chances. It's just not good. We came on a Sunday morning when the line at Valentina's was too long. So we walked in around 11:30am and were sat immediately. All our food and drink were good but just ok. I had the chilaquiles and my husband the migas. We also had the $5 Tito's bloody mary...a special on Sundays. My chilaquiles were watery and I didn't like that they used thin tortilla strips. The salsa was decently flavorful but the chips were oily. In a city full of good and great Tex Mex, I'd try something else before coming back here. read more

The critic weighs in: "Largely Inoffensive" - Mark G. "It's Like The Cheesecake Factory of Tex Mex" - Mark G. "Which is bigger, the restaurant or this combo plate?" - Mark G. In fairness, Texican deserves a three-star rating for being serviceable Tex Mex with no serious flaws. I'm tempted to dock it a star because it does not warrant the good ratings given here, doesn't warrant the large crowds that flock there, and doesn't warrant endorsement from half-assed, wannabe Yelp foodies like myself. But I digress. The menu is extensive, making it worthy of the Cheesecake Factory reference, as does the restaurant's epic physical proportions, seeming to occupy at least three adjacent storefronts in a strip mall location. I was tempted to order something outside of the familiar offerings, maybe the "award winning cabrito" or a riff on migas served "San Antonio style" with carne guisada. Both sounded promising, but my mission was to benchmark the fare to weigh in on an ongoing discussion among friends about the place. So naturally I ordered a combo plate. I gotta say, the portions were huge, nothing was off-putting, and I didn't have massive diarrhea later that day. That's all good news, but that's about as good as it gets in this review. The food was an exercise in "meh." Meh-gasmic, if you like. Let's see here... the crunchy taco was serviceable and included a nice amount of cheese, lettuce, and goodies overflowing onto the plate. The enchilada came with an old-school red chili sauce. I might respect that but it was bland, and a brown chili gravy or chili con carne might better fit the "Texican" theme. An unremarkable tamale came similarly smothered in enchilada sauce, to equally unremarkable effect. The Spanish rice was somehow less flavorful than the plain white rice I make at home, though it was not dry and hard, a common Tex Mex sin. The beans were serviceable but forgettable. The queso was queso and the guacamole was pleasant - not overloaded with lemon to keep its color stable until the apocalypse. A small salad of lettuce and tomato was not overlooked, which is key in mixing up with other ingredients for taste and texture. I can't remember if there were other things on the plate but I can forgive myself for any oversight in light of the sheer quantities present. I have no doubt that some people will have a deep affinity for this place as a source of plentiful comfort food. They won't want to hear me snarkily mock its mediocrity. They don't need my opinion to know how they feel about the Texican, and won't appreciate a review that explores the gray areas between judgments of good and bad. But for those of you without an attachment to the place, let me whisper in your ear: You can do better - eat at any number of other old-school Tex Mex institutions and newer upstarts run by and for locals. And with that, I jump off to leave the true believers to enjoy the food here, because the popular vote (represented by the busy crowds here) is more important than my contrarian critiques. read more

Don't let the tacky look of the front of this place fool you. Yummy!!!!! We had the red blue corn tortilla strip spicy soup and the chili verde soup, a soft beef taco and a red cheese enchilada. They were amazingly tasty. The red soup reminded me of red pozole without the hominy. My husband is from El Paso. He loved it because they were playing a spectrum of rock music. We sat on the patio and there was a nice breeze even though it was a hot day it didn't feel hot. Great service. read more

This is a good place for lunch or dinner. The margaritas are good. I came here today for breakfast and had the Mexican omelette. My girlfriend had San Antonio Migas. We both agree that it wasn't as good as the breakfast at central market on Westgate or Chavello's in Buda. The parking is great here. We did not think the coffee was great either. In the past we came here and had the American breakfast and that was a lot of food for very cheap. And if you want an American breakfast it's pretty good. Better than IHOP. read more

This place was great! It is this big, sprawling place that is actually outside of Austin. They've been there for years, but this was my first visit. I ordered the shrimp enchiladas and my date had fajitas. The sizzling fajita plate smelled delicious and the tomatillo sauce on my enchiladas was divine. The Texican menu was great because there were a lot of options, several different sauces for their enchiladas, many different fajita choices, etc. It was so difficult to decide what to order because it all sounded amazing. Meh. The Texican holds some sentimental value for me, just because my dad used to love this place. I hadn't been in a while until a couple weeks ago, on a Friday night. There were a ton of people there, and several waiting out front. My boyfriend and I were seated right away. I'm guessing the people waiting were large groups... We had a cool waiter--can't remember his name now. Tall African-American guy. Super nice and funny. Our meal started with chips, salsa and queso. The chips were white, red, and black. Am I the only one that feels weird about eating black tortilla chips? Our waiter even made a joke about them. "Why aren't you eating the black ones? You have a problem with the black tortilla chips?" The salsa was pretty good, as was the queso. We sipped our drinks while we waited for our food to arrive. I had a raspberry margarita and my boyfriend had the equivalent of a Mexican Martini. He had 2 during the meal and acted a bit tipsy, although he said it tasted weak. My margarita was great. While sitting in that booth, we pondered what the place would look like if the lights were turned all the way up. For one, the decor would seem quite garish--very loud colors and lots of stuff stuck on the walls. The most striking thing would be how dirty the place is. The booths are separated by partial walls, and those walls are FILTHY. Looks like many years of salsa-smearing by children. The floor was pretty nasty, too. Our food was okay. I wasn't very hungry so I just ordered some tortilla soup and my boyfriend had chicken enchiladas. They claimed the soup is the best in Austin. It was kind of strange when our waiter friend set the bowl in front of me. It had no broth. He then poured the broth on top of the chicken and stuff in the bowl and told me to say "when". That was kind of weird. You have to pay extra for avocado in the soup. That's crazy. And by the way, it is NOT the best tortilla soup in Austin. IMHO, Baby A's soup is the best. The enchildas were okay. I only took one bite, so I don't think I'm gonna be the best resource for rating those. We redeemed ourselves in the waiter's eyes by ordering black beans. He actually told us that. The guy was hilarious. This place is WAYYYY more expensive than it should be. Good 'ol Tex-Mex should be cheap. We've become regulars during the last year. I read my previous review which apparently I didn't care for the queso...well, the must have been having a bad day, because they are the bomb! I'm currently loving and can't get enough of their tacos pollo al carbon (lime marinated chicken). I went here with a friend while I was waiting my turn at Austin Dermagraphix on Fri the 13th because Maudies was packed! It was a good choice. I had a watermelon margarita that was pretty tasty. i would have had a second one but didn't want to bleed like a stuck pig while getting inked. We shared the appetizer plate and by far my favorite was the jalepeno poppers. the come with a raspberry dipping sauce that was the bomb! Stopped by the Texican today for a quick lunch. The service was impeccable. I asked for iced tea with extra ice and my waiter was considerate enough to bring an entire glass of extra ice. However, the fool was barely palatable. Chips and salsa were great! Charro beans were okay but the cheese enchiladas were so spicy that they were inedible. Another one of those places I've been going to forever - 14 years I guess. Consistently great salsa and queso. The queso flameado is good but tricky to eat. The best enchiladas in Austin are here - the San Antonio Plate. It's cheese enchiladas with carne guisada on top. Damn damn good - perfect Tex Mex. The fajitas are good - a bit too much of the onion and bell pepper for me, but the grilled tomatoes are a nice touch. Great guacamole, pico de gallo, tacos, charro beans, chalupas and more. This restaurant is about half a mile or so away from my brother's home in Onion Creek. I've been here twice in a little over a week, we are two adults currently battling two toddlers and so the convenience is hugely important. The first time we went I had the enchiladas rancheras. They were okay. I thought the rice and re-fried beans were good. My son had rice and black beans, which he ate up right away. I don't like the salsa. I think the chips are great. They are the perfect thickness and crispness. I had the original enchiladas (El Paso style?) the second time around and they were much better, but somehow the cheese over cooked in my cheese enchilada and became really hard. The beef enchilada was left unscathed. Our waiter the first time was new, very sweet and accommodating. The service was just a tiny bit slow. The second time our waiter was hilarious and almost overly friendly, but in a likable way. The food arrived quickly, but getting the check was another story. The restaurant is dark and and the carpet is just a little bit smelly, in the way restaurants with carpets get smelly from humidity and spilled food and drink. I haven't been here for a while, so we thought it was time for a revisit. When the Texican gets it right, they get it right. They definitely have some good grub, good drinks and good salsa. The thing I can't stand, is that when you walk in, it smells like a train station bathroom. ICK. So, the place seems a little dank. When walking to your table, you have to be careful to get out of the flight path of several fast moving servers with large food trays. Its like I-35 at rush hour. Tonight, our server was maxed-out and a couple of our items came cold, but they were replaced with hot food quickly and without much grief. They were evidently short handed.
