Great spot! Large, several separate sections, great decor and atmosphere, bar, patio, & banquet room. Food is terrific. The staff were totally amazing & accommodating. My friend has anxiety & is sometimes super particular about where we go & where we sit. We asked to be moved to a diff section, more secluded. I'm not sure they were even seating there but they complied with our request anyway. Such kind & hard-working people. The GUAC. Great salsa, too. Decent Mexican food. They have Mexican coke! The chips are airy and a fun texture. The salsa bomb. Have tried fajitas, burritos, Chile rellano, and chicken enchilladas. The people watching is spot on. read more

This location has a bit more mileage than the Buda and since-closed South Lamar spot, but overall a consistent "good" can be had for Tex-and-traditional fare for the even-tempered. You won't find a breathtaking experience but likewise you'll leave satisfied in flavor and service. Margaritas are hit and miss. read more

My boyfriend and I have been coming here regularly. Today was the last time unfortunately. We sat down, got chips and salsa. There was hair in the salsa, a little unappetizing but the server gave us a new one. What really tipped the glass was when my boyfriend got his dos equis with salt and lime. The bottom of the glass was filled with at least to teaspoons of salt. To cut the trouble of bothering our waiter, my boyfriend went to the bartender to kindly ask for a new beer. The bartender said "go talk to your server, the server will talk to me" Is that customer service? I myself have worked in the restaurant industry for years and I would have never talked to my guests like that. read more

Best Tex Mex! My go-to spot and never disappoints. If you're in the mood for some good, quick comfort food, this is your place.

This is on the lower end on Tex Mex. The food is on par with Taco Bell and the establishment smelt like raw sewage. Both the margarita and nacho plate that I got were just not good. Try Mi Ranchito instead. Much better food. Save yourself the heartache. read more

I didnt think I would like this place but I did. There was way more seating than I would have imagined. The food was delicious and though not the typical tex mex dishes that I would normally order in some scenarios, i still really enjoyed the food. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. She was very very proactive and would take care of things before we even asked. I want to come back and try different dishes and probably will. On a side different note, they were open and busy on a Monday. Always a good sign if a restaurant is busy on a weekday. read more

Been here 20 minutes and no one has said hello. Took 10 minutes to get seated and have been sitting for 10 more and no one came by. Walking out now after 25 minutes. I tried to give some leeway for lack of help but 25 minutes is more than enough. Great place to get some food! We always order takeout, and it's always good! All time favorite is the Texican nachos with shredded chicken! Yum, yum, yum! There is a ton to eat, and definitely can be shared between two people and fill up! Every part of this dish always nails it! I highly recommend trying it out. I've tried a couple of other things off the menu, but always go back to the Texican nachos. I took off a star due to the dishwater smell of the place when you walk in! Love the Texican, great food and great service consistently, always a good experience! Today we had an early dinner, seated us right away which was nice. I had the cabrito, been a while (got stuck on the beef fajitas lately, hmmmm) it was perfect. Juicy and tender with an amazing seasoning, always love it. Been here 2 times. First time In ordered the Chile Relleno with ground beef and a margarita. Food was average, margarita was ok. Nothing special or memorable. It was good enough to go again. Last night I went again. I should have turned around before even entering because the smell out front was like filthy mop water. Entering the restaurant, the odor didn't improve. It smelled like a dirty, sticky bar room. Really not appetizing. I ordered a the Chimichanga with fajita beef and a draft Negra Modelo. Chips and salsa arrived and a cup of ice water. Salsa is good, chips ok, water tasted like cleaner. Not dish cleaner, but more like the purple fabuloso cleaner. Beer comes and is old and stale. Almost flat and it tasted like the tap line needed to be cleaned. Food comes and it is the worst part. The "Chimichanga" was about half the size of an ordinary burrito. Pretty skimpy portion. But that didn't matter. I wouldn't have been able to eat it. The meat was like leftovers, tasted like a dirty griddle, and had bits of unchewable grissle. Beans were bland and had the same flavor of dirty cookware. Rice was ok, but I couldn't eat much because the entire dish was drowned in queso. Normally that would have been just fine. But this queso was just not good. No chiles in it at all. Tasted like generic HEB brand velveeta with extra salt. It had congealled on most of the rice, forming a sticky, salty mass of inedible goo. Really gross. The staff here needs to CLEAN the entire facility properly and also RINSE away all the detergent residue. The people cooking need some QA/QC training also. This is just really bad food. read more

I am just beginning to discover the way down south area of Austin. I had been to the Texican Cafe on S. Lamar area, but had no idea there was one in the town of Manchaca. I was already a fan of the other location so I had a feeling I would of this one too and sure enough! I love the variety of margaritas they have to choose from here! You can get a flight and try a bunch of flavors if that is your fancy. I opted for the peach frozen margarita and it was so refreshing and delicious as we sat on the patio on a gorgeous evening. We happened to be here on a Tuesday night, which is half price enchiladas ... yeah! Every night of the week is a different special. Look inside the menu for the list of daily specials. The whole table ended up getting different kind of enchiladas. My go to is the San Antonio enchiladas which are cheese enchiladas covered with carne guisada ... mmm... they are so good! Texican cafe is really the only place I have seen something like this and it is divine! I know we had way too many chips, salsa and queso and almost didn't have room for our dinner but somehow we pulled it off. Our server was great. The patio is awesome! This is a cool tex-mex option down south! read more

I wanted to like this place so badly based off the good reviews but sadly we did not enjoy it. First off it was a to-go order and I was charged $3 for the tiniest watered down lemonade, secondly my nachos hardly had any fajita meat on them and lacked flavor, the al carbon tacos were ok but not worth the price based off the skimpy amount of meat in them. Kids quesadilla hardly had any meat once again. For paying almost $60 for 3 people we were highly dissatisfied and wish we would have had a better experience. read more

Here's the deal...I grew up in West Texas...I have a mom that can cook some kickin' tex-mex...I KNOW my tex-mex. It's a great thing when you can go eat some great tex-mex and not be charged like you're eating sushi! I can't stand to go to a mexican food restaurant and see double digits on all of the entrees...I mean, are you kidding? Mexican food is the cheapest food there is to make....that's part of why I love Texican cafe so much. They are not astronomically priced, and even though it's a good price, they don't skimp on your servings. Until our last visit, I had only ever tried their fajitas....(their fajitas for 1 are enough for 2 and only $9.95!!!! deal of the century.) Most places charge upwards of $11 (again, fajita meat is CHEAP...it's the left over stuff usually...not like they're cutting up NY strips)....and you don't get any meat, it's all vegetables. So, I commend Texican Cafe for not being cheap bastards and actually giving what we pay for. Next, I LOOOOOVE their chips and salsa....the queso (plain, haven't tried the kind with chorizo yet) is a little lacking, but if you throw some of their salsa in, you're good to go. They've got cheap, tasty dos equis on tap for $3 (that's better than some happy hour prices)....it just doesn't get any better than that. Worse worse worse worse place ever, oh man where do I start..1st the hostess forgot to add us on the wait list..2nd the bartender served my martini in the shaker because she said she didn't have martini glasses...3rd when we were getting seated the other hostess took us all around the restaurant she didn't know where or what she was doing..4th the MOLD MOLD MOLD on my tortilla...been to the one on Lamar totally different. Let me be honest with you. If I hadn't been invited to lunch at the Texican Cafe with my new boss, I probably never would have tried it. I mean, the color scheme...are you feeling me? Are you picking up what I am throwing down? It's...nauseating. Color scheme aside, this is some of the best Mexican food in Austin. It's closer to what I am used to eating back home. They don't offer to pour queso or meat gravy (WTF is gravy doing in Mexican cuisine?) on top of everything and that alone is enough of a reason to love them. The portions are generous and the meat is always cooked perfectly. I'd recommend the chicken soft tacos with corn tortillas and black beans. read more

I have to say, this place has really good food. Very fresh and cooked to perfection. Their menu has some very unique and interesting choices. If you sit outside, they have misters to keep you cool. Although I'm not sure how that works around food but we didn't go out there so I couldn't tell you for sure. Basically, from the 100 degree heat, we were melting already and had no intentions of sitting outside. Service was great and we never had to go looking for anybody because somebody was always nearby and eager to assist us and get what we needed. I love Texican Cafe. I will say that I prefer the new location at Brodie Oaks in Austin to the old Manchaca location, which is dark, but the service is always excellent, the food consistently delicious, and the Texican martinis the best I've had. Favorites include queso parella (sp?) which is my favorite queso of anyone's, their beef and shrimp fajitas (not crazy about the chicken), and the Texican martinis. Other star dishes are the guisada and cabrito. The taco salad was not very interesting, and we've never bothered with tacos or burritos or enchiladas there because the fajitas are so soul satisfying when you have a fajita craving. First time there yesterday evening. Food was pretty good. It wasn't spectacular. Very traditional Tex-Mex fare. No real signature dish{s} that single them out from any other. Refried beans have lard - quite a lot of it - so if you are vegetarian you need to go another route. I don't know if they have lunch specials since I went at dinner. A 2 enchilada with beans and rice plate will run you almost $10 which I felt to be a little high. I guess I am just spoiled by all the places at home that serve the same thing at lunch for $5. The chips were unusually salty which really put me off the salsa and chili con queso. It was difficult to get the flavours through all the chip salt. The 8 year old had a kids meal quesadilla with beans and rice - drink was not included but kid's meal drinks are $.99. Older sis had a taco salad and substituted black beans for the beef since she is vegetarian so they are okay with such an idea. It seemed the typical lettuce, tomato, cheese in a big fried tortilla bowl. It was nearly $8. No big surprise but another establishment here in Austin that just does not live up to the hype. read more

If your looking for a good Tex-Mex restaurant, this is definitely a stop you should make. I enjoy their multiple daily specials, especially Dollar tacos on Monday.
