Bought the Pad See Ewe because why not? Asked for it to be spicy and they delivered. The first thing I got when I was seated is a nice, warm soup of various spices. Upon finishing the soup, my Pad See Ewe came at the right time and comes with a dipping sauce and an eggroll. The eggroll was good and the Pad See Ewe is great. Water is nice, cool (not too cold and not warm), and yadda yadda. It cost me a total of $8.55. Quite blasphemous, I know, but I do not jest. It cost me less than $10 for good Thai food. If this isn't tempting you to try Thai Basil, then oh well. Will I be back? Definitely. I'm a lazy college student not wanting to walk more than 10 minutes to get food, so kudos to the strategic location. read more

This place is amazing. I love Thai food and Thai Basil is definitely in the top 5 Thai places I've ever been to. The flavors are bold and delicious, and I have never had something bad off their menu. PROS -Amazing curries, pad thai, spring rolls, and much more. -Good and fast service -Clean and welcoming atmosphere CONS -Portions are on the small side. This is the only Thai restaurant I've been to in Chico and it has become one of my favorite places. I've always received good services. The restaurant is also walking distance to campus and is located in downtown Chico. I love all their curry dishes and sum tom dish (papaya salad). I am sad to see the mediocre reviews of this restaurant, because I love this place!!! (I always thought it was called Thai Basil...guess not!) The food is SO GOOD. If I were to order a last meal on death row, one of my top considerations would be the Siamese pineapple rice, the appetizer sampler, and a bowl of the coconut soup. The hot & sour soup is also outstanding, very limey and yummy. Every dish probably has about a million calories in it, but wow, is it good. I've always had good service when I come here, and while the decor is pretty utilitarian (just tables with chairs, not much to look at), they more than make up for it with the yummy food. I ended up with the yellow curry and I've forgotten what my friends had but it was amazing as well as was the Thai tea. I'll definitely be going back sometime soon. My only complaint is the lack of air conditioning or airflow of any sort. This will make my 4th and last Time I come here. Was really hungry and a parking spot opened right in front is the ONLY reason I am here. What I have had here: pad Thai- too sweet, fake sauce. Tom Kha- good, pad see ew- does not use Chinese broccoli like the recipe calls for and only came with two broccoli heads. Food: just ok, a little skimpy on veggies and meat. We were heading downtown for an event and Sis recommended an early dinner at Thai Basil. I am glad she did. The place is not fancy, but the service was quick and my Singha Thai beer was cold and tasty. I had the asparagus and prawns which were great. The prawns were fresh and had good flavor. I ate it all. Sis had something else - don't remember what - and it was decreed good as well. The entrees came with a large bowl of rice. I had mine prepared mild and it was. If you like your Thai food with some heat, you might want to order hot. But, I'm not an authority on Thai food so don't depend on my recommendation in that department. I actually ended up here one night after the thai place I usually go to denied us service 20 minutes before closing. Luckily, Thai Basil (with the same hours) still served us. Major points for that. In fact, the service all night was wonderful- friendly and attentive. The food was also really good, we got the tom kha and pad thai and were really excited about it. Just as good as some other places in Chico. What really makes this place worth going to is the combination of great service and great food. Excellent food. I was impressed with the service, too. Went here with some friends on St. Patricks day. We had spring rolls and egg rolls, all fresh and delicious. I definitely recommend the spring rolls if you are into vegetables. I had the Sesame Chow Mein with Chicken - it was PHENOMENAL. I had never really had Thai food before but I am a fan now. I quite like this little restaurant. I've eaten at Thai Basil for about 4 years, since it was Thai House. The food changed a little when the restaurant changed hands, but all in all its still the same place. I probably eat here twice a month. I don't go to Chada because I do not like eating in a musty old basement. Thai Basil's lunch service is great. They are fast. I like that most about this place, its only a few minutes after you sit down that they take your order and then never more than 10 minutes to get your food. I appreciate the way that they do Pad Thai, its bursting with peanuts and is so sweet. My other favorite dish is the Green Curry with chicken. Look to spend about 9 bucks a person. There is always a more mature, middle class crowd there during lunch so its probably not the best place for kids. It works best if you have a group of 4 or less. If the Mango is in season, order the Mango sticky rice! read more

I went to Thai Basil for the second or third time recently. It had been a while since I had gone because for some reason I had it in my head that it wasn't very good. Well, this most recent experience was great, and I have no complaints! I ordered the fresh vegetarian summer rolls, which were indeed fresh and delicious. They gave me three (cut in half) and they were filled with various vegetables and rice noodles. For my main dish I got the mango salad--a nice variation of the usual papaya salad. It was very flavorful, including a nice blend of lime and cilantro. The only problem was the red onions. I actually picked them out, because I knew they would give me bad breath, but even so, the taste of red onion sort of overwhelmed the dish and I had horrible breath for the next 24 hours. It was sort of worth it. All in all, it was a nice experience at Thai Basil this time around, and the service was friendly and timely. I will definitely go back! read more

If you have not eaten at this place here....then you are overlooking one of the hidden gems in the hidden city. It's operated by Thai-Laotian family and frankly, it's one of the best Thai-Laotian food I ever ate in my life because they aren't afraid to make it spicy the way I want it to be and they KEEP it real unlike the ones that I've been to in Boston, MA. It's small, simple, comfortable, and friendly there. Plus, the foods are GREAT. They do have special items/dishes which should be tried out...I need to go back there again ASAP! read more

I ordered the spicy rice with tofu, medium spiciness. It was amazing. The tofu actually tasted delicious with good texture, and the rice was the perfect amount of heat, with great flavor. I've been here a few times and the food is always great. This time I came in for lunch and ordered the spicy noodles and barely received any noodles. It was a very small portion and covered in mostly undercooked sprouts. I also ordered another egg roll. The total was More than my friend who ordered the same thing with a soda. Definitely doesn't make sense. Also We didn't receive complimentary soup or anything. I think they need to decide if that's standard with lunch or not because some ppl get it and others don't. This is my favorite Thai place in Chico. The food is consistently good, and the staff have always been friendly. Be careful with the spiciness though - it should be a given that Thai food can burn a couple new holes through you, but their measures (mild, medium, hot, and thai hot) can be misleading. I ordered a dish medium one visit, and it barely had any spice at all, so the next time I decided to go for hot. This time, it was so hot that it was painful to eat (and this wasn't thai hot, just hot). My mouth went beyond just the point of burning from spiciness into true physical pain. I've never sweated that much, and drank that much water while eating out. Quite an experience. Luckily the wait staff was great, and while they thought it was hilarious, they were quick to make sure my water was never empty! read more

I have been on a Thai food kick lately so I was very excited to try out Thai Basil after reading all the reviews. I was not disappointed. As a vegan, I was super excited to see that pretty much all of their entree's could easily be made without animal products. My server was also very friendly and helpful when it came to confirming that the meal I ordered was in fact vegan. The food came out quickly and was delicious. The portion was perfect for having left overs to take home or for filling you up if you came into the place completely ravenous. (I was much closer to the latter when I visited. :P) I had their Thai Iced Tea and it was pretty good, not the best one I've had, but good none the less. I also had some noodle dish, which I cannot remember the name of at the moment, and it had really good noodle to sauce to veggies and tofu ratio. The prices were pretty good too. As a "starving college student" I could always wish for it to be a bit cheaper, but it wasn't so bad. I will definitely be coming here again! read more

Waitress was fabulous, very attentive and polite (obviously didn't have the "other" waitress mentioned in some recent reviews). The food was good; I usually like my veggies a tad more cooked (these were a shade under raw) but even with that, it was delicious. Second problem I've had with this place today and now I'm done. After finding a parking place several blocks away and feeding the meter we were turned away because they decided to close half an hour early then there normally scheduled time posted online. Then when I brought it to her attention she raised her voice at me and tried to justify it. The previous time I was in there I ordered a number 35 and instead of the Panang curry they brought me a number 34, yellow curry. Instead of apologizing for their mistake, they tried to argue with me when I asked them to bring me what I ordered. There are other places in Chico to eat that don't treat their customers poorly. Thanks, but no thanks. Not only are they rude, it's a challenge to deal with getting to the restaurant due to parking and wading through the homeless people to get there. UPDATE: after being treated horribly by Thai Basil we went to Mekelala to get our Thai fix. Not only were we welcomed and treated kindly, the food exceeded eVery expectation we ever had. The Panang Curry was the BEST. The appetizers were also better. Don't waste your time, effort or money on a business that doesn't appreciate you. Mekelala is all around better experience. We also like Cocodine but unfortunately they are closed on Tuesday but conveniently located in South Chico if you don't want to make the drive to the North side. read more
