Thai Basil has an excellent new chef! This isn't our usual go to for thai food but I'm glad we gave it another try last night. It's close to our house and now that the menu and tastiness of the food is significantly better, we will be back. We ordered the special of the night, a FRIED chicken curry dish with avocado. It was so delicious. The pad thai has a lot of flavor now also. They did some painting so the place looks fresher and the service was warm and friendly. My fiancé and I came here for lunch last week. We ordered the Thai spring rolls and wings for apps. He really enjoyed both. I don't do wings and thought the rolls were good but nothing crazy special. He ordered the red curry for an entree and I ordered the pad Thai. The curry had a nice flavor but the portion was small. The pad Thai had an odd flavor that I can't really describe...almost like they used too much fish sauce but I am not sure. I don't know if I would necessarily return to this restaurant as we both agreed we enjoyed our meals at Four Seasons (not too far away) more. read more

Don't be put off by the fact that it is located in the strip-mall with shoprite of piscatway. Their prices are little high compared to the local competition of say Four Seasons, but the nicer restaurant setting is what you pay for I guess. Food is really good and really really spicy. read more

Dependable always-great Thai food in a relaxed setting. I've only ever had the Pad Thai and the various curries (there's 4 or 5 of them) but they've always been great. Another big plus here is the BYOB aspect. Makes for a very affordable and excellent meal. They'll make any dish as spicy or not-spicy as you want it. Service is always great. They're also well-equipped to do take-out if you want to eat it at home. read more

This is one of the best Thai restaurants in the area, I often took my colleagues to eat here when it was a Chinese restaurant before since my friend Professor Tu was working here as waitor during summer when he was students of Montclair University and later Wisconsin University. During lunch time, it often full of professionals from AT&T, Telcordia, IBM, Sun, ...etc since there is no restaurants in Hoes Ln and Centenial corporate area; they all came to eat at this area, and Thai is very popular in recent years. We often had a nice dinner here before going next door for shopping at Shoprite in weekend. Well, it is no good to go supermarket when stomach is empty when one may buy lots of unwanted items. The price matches the decoration, but it seems to be a nice birthday dinner place. We came here often because we love the food and service. My kids love the drink particularly. read more

Large beautiful decorated place, ordered basil lamb, massaman curry w shrimp tum yum soup . All were spicy with the soup being on the brutally spicy side, the potatoes in the massaman curry were slightly undercooked. Make sure to have the waitress write down your order because she messed my order & another tables order by using her memory. Granted, I only ordered 1 dish to go, so maybe the experience would have been different if I dined in. That being said, I personally think it's quite difficult to make a bad-tasting pad thai. The only possibility is if it's too salty. This was not the case with this restaurant, BUT they did manage to forget to put crucial ingredients for pad thai. For myself and wife this late lunch on a Saturday we left feeling very dissatisfied we gave it a second chance. It for us is not authentic Thai; rather just generic food of this type. Also, when ordered I clearly stated what I wanted, repeated it, and got an up charge for what was clearly a choice of what to have with that selection. I let it go. However, when got the "Rocket Shrimp" for nine dollars and fifty cents was shocked to see five little shrimp, not as described, a thin small piece of some kind of dough skin folded over and deep fried served with a spoon of duck sauce for which I was told I could not have more of. My wife was quite shocked at her "curry", -- she's Asian and a world traveller as well as accomplished chef herself. She does not have many opportunities to try a plate with coconut in it, so was eager until served. Then came the Bill which was as disappointing; in my life I have never been charged for a pot of hot tea brought to the table, but we were here three dollars, one bag, half of a pot of hot tap water. So for the nearly half of a hundred dollars we spent for lunch prior to food shopping next door, -- we were speechless and surprised there were as many folks there as there was which we took as a great sign for a retry. So, others I guess are OK paying nearly ten dollars for five deep fried shrimp and getting generic Asian food, table service, but we were not. Since the service in part did the up-charging, not stated to us I was forcing myself to leave even close to a reasonable tip, if one at all, -- but I did. Insuring proper service for the next folks, and compelling me to leave this review which I don't do. This is my second in a decade if remembering correctly. To pay that kind of money and sit next to an electric space heater as well, for me, is just confusing as a "special meal out" with no lunch specials at all and not clearly, fairly priced. read more

I usually dislike vegan restaurants and never go to one, but one day ended up trying this place. absolutely loved it! The food is yummy and choices are plenty. Ambience is good and the staff courteous. The food is prepared reasonably quickly so that's a plus. Salt tends to be on the higher side for my taste, so I order accordingly. I really wanted to give this place more stars because I had gone here a year ago and remembered it wasn't too bad, but when I went the other day I was really disappointed. We ordered to go and I ordered the usual Pad Ke Mao and Massamum curry, he really liked his curry but I couldn't even eat mine. It was beyond hot, hot to the point that it was as if I asked for it to be that spicy. I know that those noodles are spicier than most of the noodles but I was really unhappy with it. It smelled SOOOO good and from what I could taste it was good. I don't think it should be THAT spicy unless someone asks for it, a little bit is fine but the red pepper next to it just seems not enough to warn people. Hopefully we will try this place again and I can try something better, but for now I wasn't too thrilled. The man who gave me the food and checked us out was extremely friendly though, I enjoyed that. The decor is nice too, lots of seating. That parking lot sucks though! read more

I've been coming here on occasion for the past several years. It's conveniently located on Centennial Avenue, close to Rutgers and a lot of businesses. I find that their menu is more expansive than most Thai restaurants in the area. They also have a dedicated vegetarian menu as well. The restaurant is small and seating is tight. Not a lot of ambiance, but service is good. On my latest visit I got Chicken Pad Thai to go. It's not the best pad Thai I've ever had, but a nice portion and tasty. read more

We went here for lunch and I was disappointed with the pad thai. It was not very authentic. I've had better one (sushi o) in edison nj is the best pad thai i've ever had. For appetizers, we tried chicken satay it was alright and the peanut sauce was ok too. Their calamari was good, it was beer battered and i'm just glad it was not rubbery... The food is OK. I have had much better Thai food in other parts of the country. I went for dinner (carry out) and I ordered Vegetarian Kee Mao--it was alright in flavor but little to no vegetables in the entire dish. The menu says Mixed Vegetables but it was mostly carrots and sweet red peppers. That is not really what I think of when I see Mixed Vegetables on a vegetarian entree and for that reason I would give it a C-. I also ordered Tom Kha Chicken Soup and this too was disappointing as it was mostly broth. Only 2 mushrooms and very little chicken in the bowl. I have eaten here before on past business trips to the area and it was OK, not great, but average. This time I would say they were below average since they went skimpy on all the ingredients in each dish. read more

I frequent this place often for Thai takeout since it's a short drive from work. They just remodeled the restaurant right before Christmas and it looks great, much more open and comfortable now. Typical Thai fare, I usually get the Thai Cashew, which comes with a healthy portion of pineapple, cashews, veggies and rice. Today I ordered the chicken but received shrimp. A bonus for me but good thing I love shrimp! Three stars because it's good but not outstanding, and the prices are much higher than the far better Thai Kitchen of Bridgewater. read more

Okay. So, I've returned to Thai Basil a number of times, and... they've won me over. Four stars it is! Admittedly I haven't been back for table service since the awful lunchtime debacle; I've only done takeout. But the food has been consistently very good. It's not the best Thai food out there, but it's definitely worth repeat business and certainly a great option for lunch and the occasional take home dinner. The Vegetarian Kee Mao remains my favorite dish here - and I'm happy to report that I've never come across another egg shell! The container I brought home for tonight's dinner was packed to capacity with the stuff; takeout orders are definitely generous. They've also finally kicked up the heat to a respectable level. Another major improvement is with staffing. The young woman that has greeted me the last few times is super friendly and pleasant to deal with - worlds apart from the surly, frazzled woman who abandoned my coworker and I mid-order back in October. Service with a smile is definitely a nice change of pace! So yeah, four stars. They've earned it. :o) read more

Great for lunch. Went with my mom. Food came out fast which is great when you're on lunch and don't have a lot of time. We started with Thai rolls for appetizer. 6 small rolls. Yum! We couldn't stop eating them. They came with a sweet orange sauce. She had pad Thai and thought it was a bit bland. I tasted it and thought so too; it just seemed that one ingredient might have been missing in the dish to give it umph. I had the ginger and scallion chicken with jasmine rice which was excellent. Portions were HUGE for lunch. We both ate half and have leftover lunch for tomorrow. Very good food, prices, local run family atmosphere. These people work hard and it shows. Agree with other posts about the decor, but that's a secondary need for me. First is food and service so I give this place 4 stars. read more

Order take out for the first time here and it did not disappoint! We ordered many dishes including the drunken noodles, Thai basil fried rice, General Tso chicken and spring rolls. All dishes were great! The chicken in the dishes however was a little dry. Price was average. Would definitely recommend trying though! read more

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant (by accident) today for a late lunch, and loved the food. We ordered Thai Basil Fried Rice and Pad Thai - both were flavorful and fresh. Servings were large for us, and so we took galf if it home. For dessert, we ordered Mango Sticky Rice, which was delicious. The restaurant wasn't busy - just 3 other tables and us. We loved the food! This was a restaurant I used to go to regularly up to two years. The management has changed recently so has the food. The menu is the same though some ingredients listed in the description the restaurant no longer has (i.e. new management has gotten rid of baby corn entirely, mushrooms are not just regular american button mushrooms, etc). The food is very bland. The brown sauce has a distinctly fish taste to it. For appetizer we got the Roti Shana which is literally one and a half tablespoons of curry sauce served with a 3" wide paper thin piece of bread, this was the only thing that tasted fine but for $7 other sit down Thai restaurants would give at least four times as much. The atmosphere is still nice, the wait staff is still nice, prices are the same around $15-20 an entree, food quality has plummeted. read more

First time in Thai Basil Restaurant and I will be returning! My Vegan Satay appetizer had both a peanut sauce and and a cucumber dressing for dipping. The cucumber dressing was so delicious! I would typically gravitate to the peanut sauce but went for the cucumber dressing to dip in because it was that good!! My husband and I shared the Country Pad Thai and the Pad See You and enjoyed both entrees. They both had a nice amount of vegetables in each dish in relation to the amount of noodles and the portions were a great size. Loved finding a restaurant that caters to vegan and vegetarians and also accommodated my need for gluten free food. I do wish they had notations on the menu regarding whether a dish was gluten free or could be made gluten free but they were extremely accommodating when I ask about gluten free options. Enjoyed speaking with the owners daughter and finding out the backstory of this restaurant. All of the girls that were working the dining were very friendly and attentive. I will definitely return, there are several other items on the menu that I would like to try! read more
