This is our new favorite Thai place near the house. The service is always great. There's always a pretty good-sized crowd throughout the night but we always get seated immediately. One of my absolute favorite things to order is the Glass Noodle Vegetable Soup. It comes with a BUNCH of noodles and veggies. It comes in a pot with a gel fuel thing underneath it. Surprisingly, it never burns. And just let the waiter know when you wanna turn it off. It's amazing when you're sick. Boyfriend's favorite is the Beef Sa-Te House Special. It's only $1-2 more expensive than the appetizer and it comes with Shrimp Fried Rice! Other favorites are the Angel Wings (because they DEBONE the drumstick), Green Garden or Drunken Vegetable (our usual veggie fix when we need fiber), Phad Thai, Shrimp Prig King (not super spicy and the shrimp is peeled besides the tail end), and Mango w/ Sweet Sticky Rice (tons of rice and mango). I took one star off because there are a handful of dishes that we aren't fans of. The Garlic Short Ribs had a good flavor but I think it would've been better grilled than fried. Decent food for a good price. Is inside the plaza next to island pacific - for some reason, the gps couldn't tell me that and I wound up going in circles -_- super annoying. Got the shrimp pad thai with extra lime and peanuts. A little on the wetter/saucier side and the noodles [there were 2 kinds inside] a bit softer than I would like but is decent to satisfy the intense craving I was having for pad thai. Shrimps are of a decent size and you get like 5 or 6 which is a bonus. Personally I would prefer them to stick to the regular pad thai noodles instead of combining that and almost a thinner vermicelli mixed inside. I also got the drunken noodles. I asked for specifically no bell peppers ......but for some reason... I had loads of it inside. gross. Didn't end up touching it so can't tell you how it tasted lol. My dad said it was meh and he said he preferred the pad thai more even though he said it wasn't the pad thai he was used to eating. Each of these was about $8, rounding up to $9 so that's a pretty good deal imo. Short of 19$ for both? heck yeh. We've ordered food from this place twice. I would say it's a hit or miss with certain dishes. The Pad Thai is okay, Pad Kee Mao lacks flavor, the skewers are good, the green curry lacks flavor, the seafood salad is good and the red curry is good. We also tried the eggplant tofu dish, but they forgot to add the eggplant to the dish. I'm not sure how someone could screw up that dish without realizing it. I'm a sauce person so I loved the drunken noodles & the pad Thai. The DRUNKEN NOODLES consisted of thick and flat rice noodles. The sauce was sweet with a little bit of spice. Place was one of the better Thai food places I've had in a long time. I didn't know it existed until a friend told us about it. We got the coconut tom yum seafood soup. Boy was it good. It has that light tom yum flavor with a sutle creamy texture. The Pad thai was decent, normal pad thai that was medium spicy. The Beef saute with peanut sauce was decent. Nothing special and kinda chewy. Seafood fried rice was a must have also. This portion is really big. THAI CUISINE MORE THAN JUST PAD THAI My first introduction to Thai cuisine was when I was high school where one of my track and field teammate's family owned a Thai restaurant, which was across the street from Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward. The first Thai dish I ever had was pad thai. I loved the flat noodles with the shrimp and chicken in peanut sauce. Ever since I had that dish when I went to that restaurant I always ordered that dish. My friend's family doesn't own that restaurant anymore as they sold it. Thai food back then wasn't as popular as it is now. When I go to Thai restaurants I always order pad thai to bring back memories of my teammate's family restaurant. However I have been expanding my palate. What I noticed is that Thai cuisine can be pricy in respect to the portions. I passed by this restaurant several times but I never ate until recently. When I first ate here I looked at the "House Specials" section of the menu. The first item I ordered from that section of the menu was the angel wings, an item that consists of a boneless, stuffed chicken wings that are breaded and fried. The stuffing consists of ground pork and clear noodles. After eating this dish you get addicted. Lately when I go to Thai restaurants I order a version of this dish. I've ordered other items from the "House Special". The chicken ruby dinner is similar to the angel wings but instead of chicken wings it is cornish hen. The honey duck is moist and with the honey adds a sweet tang to the dish. Since the restaurant refers itself as a barbecue I had the BBQ ribs. I felt the ribs were too soupy. I think these ribs were first poached then grilled. This is just me but one of my pet peeve in cooking is if the ribs are poached then grilled. After the ribs are poached but not properly dried when grilled there won't be that charred marks on the ribs and the ribs will become soupy. I also ordered the rainbow trout dinner. I saw an episode of Gordon Ramsay's "Best Thai Restaurant" on the BBC. He went to Thai restaurant and ordered grilled sea bass that had crispy skin. He loved that dish. I was hoping the rainbow trout would be like this. It was delicious but the skin wasn't crispy. I've ordered other items not from the "House Special". The garlic beef short ribs are delicious because of the sweet and savory texture. In addition the meat was meant to be dry. There might be some people who might not like this dish but I like it a lot. Of course I had to order pad thai during one of my dinners here. I have enjoyed eating different items during my lunch or dinner here. Unlike most Thai eateries the portion of the items justify the price. If you want to expand your horizon of Thai cuisine I recommend Thai Original BBQ. read more

Thai Original BBQ could very well be one of the best kept secret Thai eateries in the Union City area. I would never have found this place if it wasn't for my friend. The restaurant is in an obscure strip mall which I've driven by many times. My friend brought me here and I was surprised how good the food was. The lunch specials are the way to go! Since the place is called TO BBQ, I had to give the BBQ chicken a try. The lunch special included 4 pieces of chicken - a breast, thigh, drumstick and wing. Chicken tasted like it was brined as it was very tender. It comes with a side salad and fried rice. Definitely enough for 2 meals. All for only $7.50. Can't beat it. Friend ordered the Tom Yum Soup with a side of white rice. The Tom Yum Soup was a humongous bowl filled with lots of seafood. That portion could easily serve 4-5 people. She seemed to enjoy the soup a lot. The waiter was super nice and came by to check on us a few times even though he was the only person running the entire front of the house by himself. Ordered half chicken, Tum Yum Seafood and crab fried rice. What is good is that they serve very large portion and the soup has the proper ingredients (Galangal, Basil leaves and of course Lemon Grass) to make that authentic Tum Yum flavour. The price is even surprisingly low. However, what is bad is that the Thai Original BBQ down SoCal (3rd St., LA) serves real BBQ chicken as I remember going there three decades ago. I asked the server and he confirmed it is the same owner. The BBQ chicken should be their signature dish. Four years ago, I dined at this Union City branch and the chicken was not that great. It tastes like the rotisserie chicken from Costco that was put in the grill to get the BBQ searing marks. I asked my wife this time and she agreed this is not Chicken that was barbecued. I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately the food that we ordered was just not good. We ordered the crab fried rice, angel wings, and the spring rolls. The spring rolls were my only favorite. The crab fried rice was very dry and lacked flavor. The angel wings were just like Popeye fried chicken that they stuffed with filling and was deep fried. It looked nothing like the picture. After eating the crab fried rice and the angel wings later that night we felt sick... Chicken Sa-Te, Papaya Salad and Pineapple fired rice are my must eat food whenever I go there. I recommend Tom Yum Shrimp. It is a hot and sour soup with Thai spices. This is a great place if you are in the area and are craving some great, authentic Thai food. I must say that this is one of the best Thai restaurants I have ever been to. My family loves it so much that we used to go here for lunch every Sunday after going to church. The waiters are also very friendly and check up on you.
