I really, really wanted to love this place, but it fell short. The staff was very gracious and friendly. The atmosphere was one step up from an area Chinese place (not a real knock, just trying to give context). I had the tom kha gai to start, and I have to say that it would have been the best I ever had if there was a bit more kick to it. It was clearly filled with fresh ingredients, and the taste of the broth brought all the ingredients very nicely. I also had a tofu Gaeng Keaw Whan (green curry). This is where I was disappointed. The ingredients were very fresh (snap to the green beans, basil freshly added and not falling apart). Unfortunately this too lacked spice, and I clearly said I wanted it spicy but not Bangkok hot. The curry itself was a lot thinner than I'm used to, and with the lack of kick it was an overall disappointment. Next time I'll branch out and see if there's more to this place. There are not a lot of Thai options in these parts, so I'm a little bit limited in local comps. Honestly I would have given 2 1/2 stars if I could because they're not yet quite A-OK in my book. read more

The food was delicious but the service was painfully awful! First - the waitress didn't speak any English so she couldn't answer even the simplest questions (how hot is this dish?) I hate when Asian restaurants do this - why are you sending me a waitress who can't even tell me what sodas you have?? Then - we didn't expect much since this is a small family owned type restaurant so we ate our meal which was good (soup, noodles, rice - we didn't order anything fancier because again the waitress could not understand us) and then before we even paid the bill - it was only 10:15 and the restaurant closes at 10:30 and they turned the lights off on our side of the restaurant since we were the only table! I don't know nothing about Thai food. I only just started venturing into Thai when I was in Portland, ME and the folks I was working with would go to a Thai Noodle place for dinner... So when the wife I found an hour for lunch, I was going to head down to Lemongrass in an effort to find some Singapore Noodles like I had in Portland, but Yelp suggested I try Thai Nam Phet (it was closer), and we're pretty glad we did. Since the Drunken Noodles were highly reviewed, I went with the lunch special with soup. The soup was a light and very tasty broth that tasted like tomatoes and peppers. It had large chunks of fresh mushrooms in it (which I donated to my wife) and chicken as well. The Noodles were long and flat and very well seasoned. It was completely unlike the Singapore Noodles I was craving. Mindy had the Pad Thai lunch special ("You kinda test a place with their Pad Thai, like you test diners with their Reubens.") and a salad that I snuck a snitch of which had a tangy/spicy dressing that wasn't entirely to my liking, but she (a more experienced Thai eater) polished off. She was over-the-moon about the Pad Thai, and she took a menu on the way out, so I suspect we'll be back... read more

A solid four star Thai restaurant tucked away in Rockaway, NJ. I was delighted to find this gem near my hometown since I love Thai food so much. My favorite place in Manhattan is right across the street from me, so I am spoiled and expect to be able to get delicious Thai food whenever I want :) I've been here a few times with my cousin and my brothers. I really enjoyed this small quaint, restaurant. The service was fast and the staff was very friendly. The prices were excellent compared to other Thai restaurants I have been to that have been slightly more expensive. For an appetizer I ordered the curry puff, which is always a favorite of mine at a Thai restaurant. The outside of the curry puff was fried to perfection and had a great crunch to it. The cucmber sauce that is served with it was also spot on. I had the chicken pad Thai which was cooked perfectly, and the chicken was thinly sliced and tender. My date had the chicken in yellow curry which was delicious, the yellow curry had great flavor and again the chicken was cooked perfectly. read more

I don't typically write reviews, but an article I recently read inspired me to write about this restaurant. For all those who say the west coast has the best Asian food, alright, maybe all around, it may. But have you ever been to Thai Nam Phet and asked to talk to the owner for true Thai dishes? We went not too long ago, and I decided to take my newly found article's advice and ask for something the chef would make at home; comfort food. What I got was absolutely amazing. I am not sure of the name, but it was like a combo of pad kee mao with CRISPY pork and a touch, hm, saucier. He then brought out an entree of curry, but not a watery, red or yellow or green, curry. It was cooked down a little more and served with many more vegetables than you'd get if you just ordered a normal curry dish. Then! Duck. Crispy. So crispy and meaty. It had a nice sauce that was served under it, but it didn't even need it. We were extremely pleased with this route and I recommend it to anyone who thinks this place is "in the middle of nowhere" or "doesn't even match west coast". And the price? For being so far out west from NYC and close to the Skylands, this place really does capture some good Thai food. The service here is great - very sweet. The food I have tried often ranges from great to very good. Drunken noodles is always a good bet, wide rice noodles with mixed veggies and some shrimp/chicken Tom Yum soup is the perfect balance of salty, sour and hot. Fish Cake (appetitzer) has a great sweet chili sauce with crushed peanuts and cucumbers. Pad Siew has a great flavor. (w/chicken) Rice noodles with Broccoli (def a good one if you dont like spice) Haven't had the green or yellow curry yet, but I have had the red. It was very good with a good kick. I have tried a few of the specials (which rotate often). I love this place, but the food could be just a touch less expensive. The decor has elements of what you would find in a Thai marketplae (fabic and textiles work as table clothes underneath glass). The bathrooms could really use some work. The exterior of the restaurant is nice, but needs some work =) read more

I requested that the food be packed in plastic which I can reuse,, and not Styrofoam. I was assure at the time of placing the order that they would use plastic. However when I picked up I found that everything was in Styrofoam. When I called back I was rudely told that they were too busy and the guy hung up on me. First time. Several neighbors suggested we try Thai Nam Phet for they best Thai food in the area. Good recommendation. On a Monday night the restaurant had a good number of customers, all ages. We were warmly greeted and seated as soon as we arrived. The service was very good and the server was very good helping us select our dinner. We started with the fried calamari, the calamari was good, the sauce served with it was very tangy curry. We had the crispy duck special, it was good, very spiced and we had the mild version. Solid flavors. I'd go back to this homey joint for a casual Thai night. The chicken satay was juicy, peanut sauce wasn't the best we'd ever had but still good enough to satisfy. Wash it down with a (pleasantly) moderately sweet Thai iced tea. Drunken noodles actually had bold, permeating flavor unlike most pad kee mao I've had in NJ: spicy, sweet, sour, herbaceous from the basil and just the right amount of salty from the fried egg. It would've been perfect if the vegetables weren't so sparse, even for a chicken version. Sliding down. Seems like they are trying to crank every last dollar out of this place and quality be damned. Took out the booths and squeezed another 6+ seats in. The meat in the Pad Ce Aew and Pad Thai is nearly non-existent. It may have been 3 ounces of beef to exaggerate on the high side. The spicy Thai chicken wings were 3 inches long! Really pathetic. Found a nearby place I love!!! This place goes neck-to-neck with Orchid (place in Nutley I always refer to as my favorite). I appreciate great thai! I love spice, and anybody can throw on a bunch of spice. But the art to be conquered is extreme spice with extreme flavor. Some dry pepper served on the side does not suffice. Needs be fresh spice and blended in the cooking of the food. Like Orchid, this place masterfully does that! I search for this and rarely find it, so five stars is mandated. Don't let me forget to mention how rich and perfect the Tom Kha soup was (coconut soup). This place pleases me beyond the fresh spicy meal. It's just great Thai food. Read the reviews. My wife and I went to Thai Nam Phet after reading all of the positive reviews online. We had passed by this restaurant quite a few times and never went in to try it out. Needless to say the building itself is not all that attractive but we were pleasantly surprised with what we found inside. The food and service are absolutely top notch. We have tried a number of dishes including the Drunken noodles, Pad Thai and Scallops and every single dish they made for us was better than the last. Highly recommend this restaurant. My fiancee and I ended up here when our first choice was closed earlier than usual. We were quite happy to find this place. I love the kitschy atmosphere from the white christmas lights outside to the elephants on the walls. We ordered spring rolls, spicy soup, pad thai and a beef dish. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious. The staff was super friendly and attentive. When I asked for a menu during the meal, the hostess (maybe the owner?) came over right away to make sure everything was alright. I'm hoping that I just went on an off day... I ordered a large Tom Kha Kai soup for 13.95 and figured I would be more than enough for lunch. It arrived in a large metal bowl not unlike a fondue pot with a fire burning in the middle---nice idea. I pucked out some cilantro leaves that had black rotten bits--an innocent mistake. But the chicken was inedible, having the unmistakable "woody breast" texture. I almost threw up. I couldn't eat it. I just drank my iced-tea and talked with my friend while he ate. The waitress came by about 25 minutes later and asked if I would like to take the soup home. I said, "No, I couldn't eat it. The chicken was off." The bowl was completely full--it was obvious that it hadn't been touched. When the check arrived, nothing was taken off. I just paid for it and left a tip. But I won't be back. read more

I think this is my absolute favorite thai place. The staff is super sweet all of the time. I have gotten food to-go a couple of times and actually eaten there once. I confess, however, that I have not yet been able to cross over the Pad Thai border, for when my mouth thinks thai, it stubbornly salivates only for Pad Thai. Thai Nam Phet makes an exquisite pad thai. I prefer it best with 2-3 levels of spice--just a perfect balance of peanut and spice--I need my nuts... I did, however, get to try the drunken noodles entree, which is also pretty damn tasty. If I ever manage to get tired of pad thai, I would certainly turn to drunken noodles. They also make delicious thai iced tea and serve some fine coconut milk. read more

I met my friend here for Girls' night out. Everything was delicious! We shared 4 different appetizers and the papaya salad was our favorite. All of our dinners were tasty. I had the seafood fried rice, which was yummy but definitely not spicy. She had asked if I wanted medium spice and I have to say it wasn't spicy at all. If you want spice ask for more than medium. I originally reviewed Thai Nam Phet in early 2010 with a 3-star rating. Today, after revisiting nearly a dozen times in over the past year and a half, I think it deserves another star. The restaurant decor is the same -- a little simple. The service is still excellent. BYO is a nice perk. The quality of the food is really what bumps my review. The first time or two that I had chicken Pad Kra Prow (chilli sauce with basil), the chicken tasted slightly gamey. However, it was either a bad batch (or chef) and they have since made it extremely well, using very fresh ingredients. They allow you to configure the spiciness as desired. Luckily, even a 5-star spice suggestion allows you to taste the food. I would recommend going there for lunch, as the specials are very reasonable. Also, the peanut dressing on the spring greens is very tasty! The appetizers decent, but may not be made fresh in-house. (The curry puffs have good flavor, but tasted as though they were previously frozen.) Overall, a very enjoyable Thai dining experience, and highly recommended for good food at a reasonable price. read more

Yum! The pad see ew (or pad ci aw) was everything I could have asked for. Lots of Thai sauces and flavor instead of the "fake Thai" that's actually made with plain old soy sauce. BF said the Tom Yum soup was "meh". Very plain and not a whole lot of veggies.. Just chicken and mushroom and it's pretty expensive for a large. Just got take out so I might change my first impression after dining in. I would give a 3.5 for food since it seems to be hit or miss. read more
