Finally tried Thai Social! I always pass by this restaurant on my way from Queens to Long Island and vice versa. The place always seem popping with its chic outdoor dining area. The neighborhood is quite diverse with the types of stores and cuisines for the restaurants in the area so I was not sure if it would be authentic Thai food or not. The restaurant is located on a big street where several bus lines run, but it is very easy to find parking in the residential areas nearby. I came on a Tuesday evening and was able to find free parking directly in front after 7 pm. The location is Oakland Gardens which is a perfect in between Fresh Meadows and Bayside area. My friend and I decided to come here before our movie at AMC theatres. The place is quite small and they do accept reservations so I highly recommend making one. Amongst the 6 of us, we shared 4 appetizers and we each got our own entrees. It was the perfect amount of food. For appetizers, we ordered the zaab Chicken wings (4 pieces), chicken skewers (4 sticks), curry puff (3 pieces), and the fried calamari. The zaab Chicken wings are a perfect Thai Chile lime dried rub that is so delicious! I was reluctant to order the chicken skewers, but my friend really wanted to try. I was shocked! It was on par with my favorite chicken Satay from my favorite Malay restaurant. Perfectly tender with the perfect peanut dipping sauce. The curry puff is very good as well with a perfect amount of curry spice and potatoes filling. The fried calamari was decent - no complaints! As for entrees, we all ordered something a bit different. I was in between 4 different entrees and I'm glad my friends ended up ordering some of it so I got to try. The pad Thai, pad see ew, and crab fried rice are standard with full flavors. The basil fried rice was very smokey and good. The tom yum Noodle Soup is also very flavorful with lots of char Siew type of meat and ramen type noodle. Lastly, we were all pretty stuffed but we wanted to try the mango sticky rice so we shared amongst the 6 of us. It is a seasonal item (usually summer) and the rice comes in a beautiful butterfly pea purple-blue color. The mangoes are perfectly riped with a rice crunch and coconut drizzle. It was so good! And forgot to mention - we did order the Thai iced tea and it met my expectations (especially when I asked for less milk!) The Thai iced coffee has an interesting chocolatey after taste to it. One of my favorite Thai spots in the area. Located in a quiet residential neighborhood, this place really stands out with their amazing food, creative cocktail list, and excellent service. Did that sound like the Ghostbusters song? We came in on Halloween night and the staff were dressed in costume, as were many customers. It was a packed house, but turnover was constant and the hostess was able to squeeze us in with no reservation. She said that we'd have to be done by 8pm, since she said there was a reserved party coming in. We said no problem, we'll order quick and eat even quicker. A lot of Thai restaurants have been popping up lately, but what makes Thai Social stand out is their menu that not only includes many standard dishes like Pad Thai & Pad Se Ew, but also the chef's special creations. For this first time, I wanted to try dishes that are not run-of-the-mill. We started with the Snow Mushrooms appetizer, which was a spring roll wrap around a cluster of beech mushrooms and deep fried. It was very tasty, especially with the sweet chili dipping sauce. There are 5 pieces meant for a larger group, so it was a little much for just the 2 of us, but no complaints because we were hungry. The Kai Toon Talay was up next with squid rings & shrimp on top of a steamed egg omelet in a spicy sauce simmering on top of an open flame. You need the Jasmine rice because it is a very rich and heavy dish. The Khao Soi Gai is a chicken leg in a similar spicy sauce on a bed of ramen noodles and topped with a cake of crunchy deep fried thin noodles. I wish it was all crunchy noodles because the ramen noodles were a little soggy. Even though the drumstick was pretty big, it was just one piece. A whole thigh/drumstick quarter would have been more generous. We finished our meal in the allotted time and can't wait to go back to try some of the standard dishes, as well as to explore the rest of the specials menu. read more

I've read rave reviews and seen great foodie photos, so I was excited to finally go! 5 of us met for a late Saturday lunch, and I honestly wasn't blown away. I've had much better Thai food elsewhere; especially in Elmhurst. These are the dishes we shared: -- Zabb Wings ($12/4pcs): these wings were great; albeit a little pricey for 4 little wings. -- Fried whole fish w.Mango Salad ($38): the fish was small and slightly overcooked but the mango salad was good. -- Short Rib Panang ($30): the tender beef short rib was pretty good but the sauce was a little weak. It was also served with sweet potatoe fries, which was a little strange, but tasty. -- Duck Curry ($29): the duck was a little dry/overcooked, and the sauce was very mild & watery; bordering on bland. Disappointing. -- Pad See Ew w.Chicken ($18): this was my fave dish. Had great wok hei & flavor. Very satisfying dish. -- Thai Iced Coffee ($5): I asked for it not too sweet, and this was very good. Thai Social is minutes away from my house, although in the past I've driven to Great Neck for Wild Figs Thai food. Which was delicious. Then I found out that the Thai restaurant by me has the same excellent food and in some ways surpassed Wild Fig. As of June 24th Wild Fig closed it's doors after 23 years and I hope their many customers give Thai Social a chance for their amazing foods flavor and preparation. My go to dish here is always always the chicken pai tai amazing flavor and just the right amount of spices that just melt in your mouth. The staff here are all amazing and especially the owner who makes all her customers happy and feel welcomed. Although it's a small restaurant, there were a good number of customers even during a late lunch, which is always a good sign. As for the food, we ordered the papaya salad, curry puffs, shrimp pad se ew, green curry, and the beef garlic sauce lunch special, which came with chive pancakes and a salad. My wife asked for the papaya salad to be spicy, and wow--was it spicy. The heat lingered on my tongue long after. A pleasant surprise were the chive "pancakes"--and I say "pancakes" because they came in cube form. Crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside, and paired with an amazing soy dipping sauce. First and foremost, many thanks to our waiter Tyler for being so patient and attentive (especially with my Mom's one too many questions). We all got the lunch special- I highly recommend the chive pancakes for the appetizer as they're quite chewy and tasty. For our mains, we got two different protein variations of the drunken noodles, pad thai, and the pineapple fried rice. This review is long overdue because this Thai restaurant is exactly what our neighborhood needed. Before they opened, there really wasn't a spot that had both the cute ambience and the great food. The vibe here is perfect for date night especially the outdoor seating, which is tucked away from the avenue so you can actually enjoy a quiet meal. The staff are always so kind and attentive. My husband goes through water quickly and his glass has literally never sat empty. That level of service says it all. Food wise, you can't go wrong. My husband is loyal to the pineapple fried rice with chicken, while I am partial to the pad kra pao with tofu and extra veggies, this time I got it with shrimp (bonus: they offer brown rice). Spring rolls, dumplings, calamari all consistently great appetizers. And if you're lucky enough to snag mango sticky rice for dessert, don't skip it. Drinks are another highlight. I am a long time customer here, but today I had an awful experience. I asked for a drunken noodle with tofu and vegetable. I don't eat meat for religious reasons. They accidentally gave me chicken and I did not realize as I've never had chicken. When I realized, they first asked if they could add vegetables to my plate and move the chicken to the side. Then they corrected it, bur I had already had the chicken. When we got the bill, the very disrespectful and rude hostess tried guilted me and said they couldn't comp my vegetable noodles because then it would be taken out of the waitress's paycheck. The sauce/curry was savory and paired so well with the rice. The sweet potatoes on the side reminded me of sweet potato fries, not that it was a bad thing. Loved having the sweetness to kinda balance out the dish. Khao Soi Curry Noodles - I enjoyed the crispy bits of fried noodle on top the regular one.
