This spot is a fun find. In a victorian house in Heritage Square, downtown Oxnard. Bringing back the nostalgia of the speakeasy it has a full bar, cozy seating and at the time some bluegrass live music. Upstairs we were taken to get full dinner service. Very comfortable seating and kind service. My friend had the Linguine Bolognese, and it was satisfying, but merely a ragu sauce with a bit of crème and ground beef added. it did not seem to have the complexity of a traditional bolognese. But a good tasty meat sauce. I was recommended by the waitress to try the PORK LOIN. I believe the reduction of wine sauce and vinegar veggies was tasty, Accompanied by the pork and was very good. Unfortunately I made a mistake and the pork was less cooked than what I preferred. They sent me a lasagna as a replacement and it was tasty, filled with a balance of meat and cheese. Tucked in a small plaza in a community area. The yelp reviews looked very promising and we were interested in trying something a little different. Not being from this area we followed the yelp map to the bar entry. It is located directly next to a trash and back of kitchen. There is an elevator to get to the "speak easy" and this part had cozy vibes. When entering the restaurant we were greeted by a pretentious staff. I was wearing shorts and a tshirt but was clean and clearly fit into the so cal aesthetic. There was no dress code listed but I was looked up and down as if I did not belong here. This was a Thursday at 7 pm and they only had a few patrons. A person who looked to be owner/manager greeted patrons but never approached our table. My husband's meal was ordered off specials list and served completely incorrect. He was given a pesto pasta instead. We did not verbalize that he received the wrong item because at that point we were ready to leave and not wait for a re-do. I got the strong opinion they also wanted us out by the looks we continued to receive. My seafood linguine was mediocre with a sauce that was lacking spice and flavor. It states a light broth as the sauce but it was all tomato like a ragú. The seafood was delicious and fresh so I ate as much as I could. Horrific Service...! Waiter was in a zombie state. Literally just stood behind us and said nothing but wanted us to order. Never ever followed up on our meals or if we needed anything else. Have had this waiter before and he is only getting worse. Bus staff took tried to take plates of several in our group - even though they were still eating. My friend and I were really excited to try this restaurant and was sadly let down on all fronts. We made a reservation at 6pm and showed up about ten minutes early. Instead of being welcoming the hostess acted like she didn't know where to put us. Our waiter was a nice person but it seemed like this was his first day on the job. I ordered a glass of wine and before my friend could order hers he left the table. This happened twice. Normally servers take everyone's drink order at one time. Also, one of the smallest pours of wine ever. My friend has a serious gluten allergy. We asked him what on the menu was gluten free. He said "pretty much everything". Then we proceeded to ask about specific dishes and kept saying "oh I guess not that". We asked him about one dish and he said yes, I think it's gluten free because it has a cream base. If he didn't know what gluten free meant he should have said so and asked the kitchen. My friend ordered the tomato soup. It came out with croutons in it. The gluten free pasta she ordered came out with a few strands of regular non-gluten free pasta in it. Not sure what happened in the kitchen for that to happen. I love gnocchi and was really excited to see it on the menu, especially with a cream sauce because that is my favorite. I ordered it and what came out was sad. The chunks of chicken in it were inedible because they were so rubbery. The sauce was essentially runny half and half with no body. The busser did a wonderfully job of filling our water glasses. However, our empty wine glasses, empty bread basket, used bread plates, and empty tapenade bowl had been sitting on the table the whole meal. I bring this up because when we asked for the check a busser came over and removed the water glasses we were still drinking out of before removing anything else. We felt rushed out instead of taken care of. The whole experience was just awkward. It felt like no one was actually trained at their job. I hope they improve in the future. The speakeasy downstairs was a lot of fun. We wish we knew that it was possible to eat downstairs because we probably would have had better service. read more

We went to the 1901 to celebrate a special occasion, and it was the perfect place! All the staff is super friendly and attentive both in the Speakeasy downstairs and the restaurant upstairs. We ordered the spinach salad as a starter to split and it was a generous sharing size, perfectly dressed and so delicious. The dinners were also generously portioned and amazing. Pretty presentation, fresh quality ingredients, and perfectly seasoned...yummy! Creme Brule for dessert was one of the best I have had with real vanilla caviar in the custard. We finished the evening listening to live music in the speakeasy. We will definitely dine here again. Perfect place to go especially if you like a calmer ambiance where you can actually have a conversation or sit back and chill and enjoy the company of friends. I hosted a small, intimate Celebration of Life. We were a group of 12 relatives, many who hadn't seen each other in 20 years, and we wanted someplace with great food that was also quiet or private enough for us to reminisce and catch up. It was difficult finding a restaurant in Ventura County that even takes reservations, let alone can accommodate a group of 12 in a private/semiprivate room. I called in advance and spoke to the manager, who set arranged for us to have a medium sized upstairs room to ourselves. The room would normally have accommodated at least 24, but the entire space was ours for the evening. We ordered both wine and mixed drinks, given that mixed drinks are the restaurant's specialty. I ordered the Second One is Always Better, a tequila drink with Tajin on the rim - delicious! Among the things we ordered were wedge salads, garlic fries, mushroom soup, seafood linguine, linguine with clams, rack of lamb, the roasted duck special with risotto (this was my dish, and it was delicious!), and ahi tuna. All of the portions were very generous, enough for two. The tiramisu desserts were enormous and delicious. The prices were quite reasonable, all things considered - the meals and drinks, with tip and tax was less than $70 per person. The servers were very attentive without being obtrusive. We went to the Speakeasy Bar before dinner. Great drinks & fun! We were there early but after dinner there was live music & a nice fire in the fireplace. The food in the bar looked great too! We LOVED the food in the restaurant. We were celebrating a "Special birthday!" It made it SO much better to have a DELICIOUS meal! ( it's not enjoyable when you expect good food & service & it's just a etage! ) The service was excellent & the food was AMAZING! We will be back! The service was lovely, everyone was very welcoming and attentive. The location in heritage Square is beautiful. Most importantly, the food was incredible. Starting with the beet salad, it was very large and full of fresh ingredients that paired very well together. My favorite dish we had was the pork loin. I have had a similar dish at another restaurant, but this was prepared perfectly. All the flavors complimented each other so well, the pork was extremely tender, and the portion was very generous. I was really excited to try this place, but was overall disappointed. When we walked in (we had a reservation), I told the hostess and she said "ohhh ya". We were sat in the corner. Started with yummy complimentary bruschetta. Took a while for our server to come over and we finally got water. From there it went down him. The server told us they would be getting busy in the kitchen soon so we should put the food order in. She told us she'd make sure the appetizer would come before dinner. About 5 minutes later, the appetizer came. Within a few bites, the food came. Then FINALLY the drinks came after the appetizer and meal was already there. The food was ok, nothing special. Came in for a date night. This is a cool hidden gem. Ambiance was lovely. The staff from beginning to end all were great. The food was tasty. They were out of a few side items that were supposed to come with our meals so they improvise without asking us or telling us, but it was cool. The drinks were so tasty and strong. Only had 2 cocktails the whole dinner. We were so full we couldn't even get dessert but since there was a mix up with the side dishes the manager gave us a chocolate cake that we each had a nibble of and it was yummy. If you look at my profile, you will see that I try not to give 5-star reviews. I make a concerted effort to hold back and only give 5-stars to places that are truly exceptional. 1901 totally knocked it out of the park and absolutely deserves it. This restaurant was previously known as La Dolce Vita but is under new management. I love the old house that it's in. Service by our waiter Sam was over-the-top, above and beyond the call of duty. He was a fantastic server and made our dinner all the more fun and enjoyable. The food is to-die-for spectacular. Everything we had was extraordinary. We started off with a nice bottle of merlot along with the arancini and artichoke appetizers. The bread and bruschetta were so good my son was trying to convince the staff to give us the recipe for the bread. The champagne mushroom soup and the caprese salad were excellent. My wife had the tri-tip steak and I had the pasta Sam said was his favorite and it didn't disappoint. The bread pudding was amazing. Loved every bit of it. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Love this place. That being said, it comes at a pretty steep cost, but I believe we got what we paid for in terms of quality of food and service. read more

Starting with the positive. Cute little spot. Service ran fairly smoothly. The ambiance of the restaurant and outdoor seating was very pleasant. Everything started off well as we were seated abruptly. Waters and bread were served pretty quickly. But the food. The chicken piccatta was good, overall a pretty large portion. The fettuccine alfredo was fine but nothing to write home about. The gnocchi was inedible. All three of us at the table tried it and we all found it to be runny, oddly sour, and just overall poorly executed. Staff did try to rectify the situation with a replacement meal/dessert but by that point we were all pretty over it as the food took a while to make it to the table. We wanted to like this cute spot but sadly we won't be returning. read more

Can't believe this is Oxnard!! Very good food, excellent drinks from the speakeasy down stairs, and nice atmosphere. The mussels were excellent with a small kick. The ahi salad was large enough for two but it would have been nice to have a little more ginger dressing on it. The portions are large and you'd pay twice as much at any restaurant in Los Angeles. The New York steak with roasted garlic and peppercorn sauce was huge! The vegetables and baked potatoes and well done. Potato crusted halibut was terrific with a light sauce with capers. And the bread pudding with blueberry compote wasn't overly sweet. And as everyone raves, the cocktails from downstairs are tasty. The wait staff are plentiful but somehow, things run a little slow. No matter; have another cocktail! This is the best kept secret in Oxnard. Avoid the Collection's chain restaurants and come here instead. This Oxnard Heritage Center is nice and bustling. read more

The whole experience was just okay. I enjoyed my seafood linguine. My wife ordered a salad with salmon as the protein. It seems there was a miscommunication with the kitchen, the salmon was not ready when our meals were served. The server was untruthful when bringing out our meals, sans salmon. We heard our server communicating with kitchen staff. It was clear, because we could overhear the conversation, they started cooking the salmon after they had delivered our meals. The server came out and lied to us that they wanted to cook the salmon longer to make sure it was done. Next a manager came out to speak with us. Cringy. I'll pass on the 1901. read more
