Most amazing food that I have had in a long time. My husband and I got the portobello mushroom for an appetizer and I could've eaten it 3 times. Next came the surf and turf which was a 6 oz filet minion with crab meat. Let me just say........YUM!!!!!! The desert was chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce and cream. Wow!!!!! I can definitely say that we will be back. Nice, cozy atmosphere in an antique building. Reminds me of the restaurants in Savannah. Very charming restaurant in an old southern mansion. Looks like most of original interior was kept as intact as possible. Huge columns and rocking chairs on the wrap around porch. Menu has lots of attractive choices. It was lunchtime so I chose the BLT sandwich with a side of green beans instead of fries. Delicious, and very evident that the green beans and tomatoes were fresh from a local garden. Only negative is that they were out of several items on the menu (prime rib sandwich and a couple of the desserts), which is frustrating as a customer. Highly recommended! read more

I've been here multiple times when I come down from Massachusetts to visit my grandmother at Dowling Park, and every time it's fantastic. This is second time I've eaten at this restaurant. During my first visit, it took around an hour to get my meal. When it actually did arrive, my dish tasted horrible! Way too heavy on the sauce and it was salty, as well. This in addition to the fact that the steak had the consistency of rubber. Today's experience featured better service, but the quality of food was about the same. I seldom leave negative reviews, but after giving the 406 a second chance I've found the all around food quality to be unacceptable for price -- which, I might add, is tad bit pricey. I knew my daughter and I were planning a day trip to the Live Oak area and searched for eateries nearby. The 406 was listed in the top 10, and while disappointed that the lunch appetizers were limited to crab cakes or bruschetta. The online menu had listed shown other options, and I had the quail in mind. However, the crab cakes were delicious and had large pieces of crab inside. We both chose the 406 grilled cheese and it did not disappoint. Huge ooey-gooey deliciousness of cheese. Still, the best thing we ate were the fries that came with the sandwich. They were a perfect blend of crispy on the outside with a soft pillowy inside. Took half sandwich home, but ate all the fries. Sadly, left no room for dessert. read more

Food is good but service is not. The menu has the least amount of effort put into creating it, as in, there are no descriptions on the lunch dishes. Sorry, but when you have a sandwich called prime rib ceasar salad sandwich I'm going to ask what that is. If there aren't going to be any descriptions on your menu then train the wait staff to not get snappy with customers when I have to ask whats in certain dishes. It took forever for my waitress to get to my table and when she did, she was rude and snappy. Also, clearly put out I had to ask questions about their encrypted menu. Another example, do your chicken dishes come with anything besides chicken, like a side? The answer is yes, but be prepared for major attitude when you ask. It's been a long time since I've walked out of a restaurant, but I almost left this one on the spot. After my waitress and I got over our less than pleasant start, she was much better at faking being nice to me but the damage was done and the tone was set. I got the steak wrap which was good. We were traveling along 10 and needed a lunch break. The reviews looked great for the 406, so we decided to give it a try. We are so glad we did! We had the shrimp tacos and the mahi sandwich with the vegetable of the day, a mix of yellow squash, summer squash, and carrots. Everything we had was delicious and well prepared. The bread was homemade and absolutely delicious on the sandwich. I was quite happy with the iced tea as it was perfect for a hot summer afternoon. Wow, what a gem for random tiny-town North Florida. Despite a quaint little (very little) downtown with some historic buildings, there aren't many fine dining options. From the moment you walk into this gorgeous historic old homestead you realize that you are in for some treat and you only hope that the dining experience approaches the charm of the property. Spanish moss drapes the trees surrounding the colossal pillared house and a nice little garden wraps the property dropping you off right on the patio bar that opens to the restaurant. Despite being from the country, I'm heavily biased towards city dining options and I was charmed by this place and I found myself somewhat envious of the wedding party celebrating in the front room. Wooden floors, mostly fine artwork, historic articles and a creaky staircase are the perfect backdrop for a traditional dining experience with some southern flair. The service was not perfect, but attentive. My girlfriend and I ordered blackened scallops and the ribeye and they graciously surf and turfed our two choices into split plates for both of us. I was apprehensive ordering the steak medium assuming they would err on the medium well side, but the steak came out text cookbook medium. The prices are quite reasonable and while the food didn't floor me, it was really high quality and not super expensive. In the rare event I would ever return to Live Oak, rest assured I would enjoy a meal or two at the 406. Exquisite. read more

Went for dinner one night because our favorite was packed. The house could be beautiful, but certainly needs a few coats of paint to make it such. The inside was very nice and our waitress was very nice and attentive. My wife wanted to be out of the ordinary and had the venison, I had the chicken breast, fried. My wife thought hers was very good (she is kind), the sauce was nice, but the quality of meat was less than I expected. My chicken was lightly battered in a Panko crumb style, the crispness was great, however, the chicken had obviously been microwave thawed and was very tough and chewy. Its pretty on the inside, but for the price and the simple meals we had, the quality was certainly less than desirable. read more

However, I wouldn't recommend this place to someone unless they're okay with waiting up to an hour for their food. When we got seated our waiter was good about taking the drinks and bringing them promptly. When he brought our drinks he took our orders then proceeded to go to the computer. But he never put our order in. After about 45 minutes someone from our party went to the kitchen staff to ask what was happening because the place certainly wasn't packed and we had been waiting for nearly 45 minutes for our food. The manager asked our waiter and he admitted he forgot to put in our orders. So we waited another 30 minutes for our food to come out. Another waitress was rude when addressing our party. We happened to be up in this area and saw this very cute restaurant. The inside is so charming there are separate rooms for dining. It really feels like you are in somebody's house having dinner. The food was very very good. I had the crab bisque and the chicken piccata. My husband had the steak frites And he said the steak fries were the best he's ever had. Now for the desert, we had the chocolate mousse cake and the bread putting. Both were enormous servings and they were both excellent. We had a pretty mixed experience at this place. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful. The historic building is striking and the dining rooms are lovely. The tables are covered in white tablecloths and the place settings have cloth napkins. It very much looks like a fine dining establishment. There was just a weird disconnect between the look of the place and the meal itself. For us, on the one hand, we were happy to find a local restaurant that offered something that was a little different than the standard local fare. There just aren't many options in and around Live Oak. In an article I read about the restaurant, the owner mentioned that they were hoping to get away from the "chicken wings and ranch dressing" menus that are common around here, and I can see where they've made an effort to do that. I had a crab cake and chicken piccata, my husband had seared scallops and venison chops. Was it the most memorable meal we've had? No, but it was solid, and the ingredients were clearly good. I think the bigger issue was the disconnect between the look of the location and the feel of the meal. If you're trying to have a fine dining establishment, in my mind, you need to treat it like that from beginning to end. For starters, no water was provided or offered. There was no drink menu. When I asked if they had a wine list, I was told they had several varieties ("cabernet, pinot noir, etc"), but not what brands or the price. It appeared everything was served by the glass. Have a wine list, even if it's limited to a couple wines. The bread basket was served cold. The sides (baked potato, rice, broccoli) were what you would expect to find at a standard Outback Steakhouse, not a higher end restaurant. Same thing with the plating. The server was very friendly, but also seemed like she was in a big rush. If you're doing fine dining, the meal should take a bit longer. The flip side is, the price was downright cheap given the quality of the food and the appearance of the restaurant. And maybe that's the disconnect. Perhaps they are trying to hit a certain price point, or appeal to a greater population. I'm not sure. But I think if they commit 100% to being a fine dining establishment, they could have something really special. Right now, it feels like they've only dipped one toe in the pool. read more

I had delicious vegan lentil and vegetable soup and bruchetta- the latter fresh mozzarella and thick slices of tomato on a very delicate roll topped with pesto and balsamic glaze. Scrumptious. Not fast food so if you are in a hurry, don't stop here. But if you feel like a leisurely lunch, white linen tablecloths and goblets of strong iced tea, while listening to Frank Sinatra classics, this is the lunch for you. Service was very good. read more

Been going there since they opened. I've had crab cakes all over the state, grew up in a fishing village and worked in seafood restaurants for years. The crab cakes at 406 WERE some of the best I've ever had. Not anymore! As soon as I stuck a fork in it I knew. WAY more filling than all the times before(dozens of times). I didn't say anything to my wife and hers didn't arrive for several more minutes. But when she did get them, she took one bite and said, "the crab cakes are different". Yep! MAJOR disappointment! But wait there's more. I ordered the scallop appetizer and was brought 2, yeah TWO medium scallops for $12. They used to serve 3 jumbo scallops on this app. So now I'm just feeling ripped off! Great food and even better hospitality! We were staying at Suwannee River State Park and decided we wanted a good meal and to watch FSU play UF. Having no idea what we would find we were more than pleased with our choice. We were welcomed at the door and served quickly. Not an extensive craft beer list but sufficient and more than reasonably priced. We had oysters Rockefeller that were very tasty, the crab bisque had a ton of crab and the blacked scallops and grouper were large portions with good flavor, the red potatoes were cooked perfectly a were seasoned perfectly. We settled up and went to the bar to watch the game. Had bread pudding a bit later and it was wonderful. Great little bar with attractive clientele and very good service. If ever in Live Oak we highly recommend stopping by for a great mean with friendly people. read more

What a gem! Our first dinner at the 406 last night was fabulous. We began with their craft cocktails which were delightful. The quail appetizer was perfect. I had the rack of venison entree. It was tender (at medium rare) and the flavor was excellent. Hubby had the Cioppino which was loaded with tender seafood. Live Oak is an hour's drive for me, but I don't mind making it since I have a favorite nursery I go to for my plants and this is now my favorite restaurant. Try it.
