I think I could possibly be addicted to bar trivia (Buzztime) now, thanks to this place & the company I was with. One of the people I was there with (a new friend) is a big Buzztime trivia fan, & after seeing her play, our whole group ended up playing! Here's a couple things that we discovered that evening: -If you play after 1am Pacific Time, you can get a "gold medal" with 7000 points. -The bar can rank in the top 10 bars with 3-4 of us playing after 1am Pacific Time. #1 was actually a place in Sunnyvale, CA (I forget which bar, maybe a bunch of tech guys who are trivia addicts frequent it?). This place is an absolute dive...there's trash on the floor, and a very faint unpleasant smell, can't quite place it, possibly urine? I am NOT the only person who's noticed the smell, since one of my other friends commented on it too. I've been here twice now (can you believe that?), both times late Friday nights (like after midnight) after being at concerts. This most recent time was after a Hollywood Bowl Tchaikovsky Fireworks Spectacular, quite the contrast of activities & locales in one evening, huh? There's some beers (I think they're all domestic beers) on tap, and even pear cider in a bottle (for me, the non-beer drinker, & I was surprised they even had it! OK, maybe it's not quite as divey as I thought). The large beer is really large...a schooner? No cocktails/mixed drinks here though. I believe the food/snacks consists of bags of chips. I think it's cash only, but come to think of it, I don't recall paying for my drinks. (Thanks to whoever did this last time!) There's "shuffleboard" along one side, a jukebox, multiple TV screens, pinball machine, & the aforementioned trivia game. The crowd seems to be a bunch ofmiddle aged and older guys & Long Beach Dirtbags fans, so don't go there expecting to pick up someone, unless that's your type, but even the guys aren't there to hit on anyone. I think I was the only woman in there besides the bartender the 1st time I went with a male friend, & more recently, again, the 3 women in our group were the only women in there besides the bartender. The security guy is actually pretty friendly. And, um, yeah, we basically closed down the place since we were busy trying to get through the last trivia session. The women's restroom is a single room, surprisingly clean, not smelly (the window is open, bringing the breeze in & airing it out nicely) but the lock sticks. I seriously thought I was going to get stuck in there both times I used the restroom. Oh, & they store nitrogen & CO2 gas tanks in there too. Trivia, Shuffleboard, and Cold PBR! Good stuff. This place is tiny and is as local as you can get. There are only three tables and long red bartop. They have like a dozen beers on tap but I stick to PBR when I go there. It's super-freezing cold and sometimes turns to slush in my glass. But I like it. They have 3 sizes of beers: pints (regular), goblet-schooner (18 oz), and the freaking cauldron (aka huge fish bowl). While I appreciate largeness of the glassware, I feel like a kitty slurping it up when I get the huge bowl. Be careful, you too will spill... it just depends if its on yourself or the bar top. They also have a little digital jukebox, mostly for those sporadic visits from the 'just-turned-21-crowd' and a pinball machine. For a place so tiny, there are a lot of TVs. And on most nights I'm there, the TVs outnumber the patrons. But the regulars are really nice. They are super friendly and are the epitome of the corner bar variety. The young girls who work there are usually nice, but not the friendliest. And now, there's a security guard late night. I remember the days when it was just us and Tony (a regular) closing it down with the bartender. I guess security can't hurt. One of our friends says that the Annex is his 2nd most favorite bar for 2 reasons: 1) Ice cold PBR and 2) Grainy hand soap in the men's room. Uh... okay... The little girls room has the standard liquid in a pump. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes to chill out at the neighborhood bar. It's not for those young'ins wanting to dance and do ridiculously fruity and colorful shots. There's no had liquor. It's basic but quality. Beer from taps, soda in cans, and an assortment of snack foods. That's it. Dive bar at its best. read more

I found out I was going to be a father while sitting here one Saturday afternoon (my wife called my cell phone). It felt strangely appropriate, since this has always felt like someplace your dad or grandfather would have drunk. Drapes so old and nasty that they'd fall apart if you touched them. Dust so thick that it's got to be holding the place together. This is a place for drinking beer...big, cold, frosty schooners of 'merican beers. I used to live down the street from this joint, so I'd walk here all the time and stumble my way back home. Just a quiet local beer, that has good cheap beer (1.50 pints during the week) good music on the jukebox, friendly bartenders and cool patrons. The Annex has had a facelift and has become less Brady Bunch like and more George Lopez like...errr.. I mean less 70`s-ish and more year 2009-ish. The old dust of yesteryear has been vacuumed up and tossed away and the modern age has been installed here...still the same awesome patrons frequent the joint with their stories of how the orange fields seemed to flow as far as the the horizon here in Long Beach when they attended school are still echoed throughout the bar... but the blizzard "cold ass beer" system and the kick ass tv set up makes that a short conversation. WiFi to boot to track your FFL teams while your watching practically every game thats going on is sweet !!! Owners J&J have really turned this hole in the wall into....well a hole in the wall with new toyz... and friggin hot barmaids no less...Ange,Rach,Amber,Joey,Sheena,Val...etc will make your 30 minute stay turn into a few hours...just the best !!! Wow... I've been hanging out at this bar for a couple years... Always had a great time... until tonight. My friend and I came in for a few beers about 11ish... being a girl with a (pea sized bladder) I went straight to the bathroom. My friend ordered our beers... pints ( nothing big) when I came back... Pretty chill dive bar. My friend and I went there around midnight on a Thursday night and there were two people in the whole bar. The review right below by Q N is pretty good and gives you pretty much all the details about the bar. It's definitely not a party bar, but if you want somewhere to hang out for a bit, watch some tv and drink...it's not bad. And, I got to play table shuffle-board for the first time. Woot! The Lifetime Movie Network was on the primary tv though... Got some of the 411 from the bartender (she was nice and patient especially since we were the last ones there) about the bar and surrounding area... apparently it's busy between 3:00-9:00pm and it's mostly older guys and cops getting away from the house. And...just so you're prepared, the bar is cash-only. (I'm sure it's been said here before, but it's good to reiterate) They have and ATM on premise but it's a $2.50 surcharge. that's at least half the cost of a medium schooner haha... I don't know about you, but I'd rather be spending the money on alcohol than on an ATM machine. read more

Came to this bar last night and experienced some really strange behavior from some of the bar customers and from the bartender. A group of 15 of us walk in, scattered but together and are told by some of the customers we would have more fun at another bar, and we should go to another. The bar tender was even more strange. As we tried to order beers, she kept telling us to wait as she settled beer tabs for others(which was strange because the bar was mostly us) and would go back to talking to the other 5 customers she had instead of serving us. It felt more than just an annoyed bartender. It genuinely felt like they wanted us to leave and being a group of mixed races, and the other customers mostly consisting of white people. Those who were served drank as fast as we could and left immediately. It was a horrible and devastating experience and if there was a way to leave 0 stars, that's what I would leave. read more

The Bar: Offset from the main boulevard, tucked behind a failing furniture store, you will find the Annex, which clearly shows it's a beer bar only. This is not my first encounter with this bar and not likely my last. Upon entering this establishment, there is a raggedy black curtain hanging in the doorway, not sure why though. Once inside, empty. The bar is a long U-shape. Two sides have bar stools, and one side has 2 person booths. I was told, they use to serve food here, but that is no longer. There is the classic dive bar icon...a shuffle board against the rear wall. The Crowd: Every time I have been in this bar, there hasn't been more that 4 or 5 guys sitting together. Local neighborhood retires shootin the shit havin a cold one. Nice guys to say the least. This is not the bar to come to if you are looking to mingle with some women.... but the bartender on Saturday night it a cutie, so that is worth the stop in. However, flirting with is practically impossible, since she has heard every line in the book from those old men. (Not that I use lines, just my natural charm, Ha!) Service: As you can imagine, with the lack of occupancy, service is quick and delivered with a smile. Prices: $7.50 Import Large Schooner, and by large, I mean fishbowl. $5.75 Domestic large schooner. $3.75 Domestic small schooner, $3.25 domestic pints. On tap they have: Coors Light, Coors, Budweiser, Bud Light, Sierra Nevada, Blue Moon, Miller Light, Pyramid Hefeweizen, Pacifico, Smithwicks, Guinness and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Entertainment: Not much going on here in the hopes of entertainment, 5 TV's, a internet jukebox, and a shuffle board. Restroom: Definitely one of the worst I have been in. The stall has a swinging door on it, and if you're over 5'5" you will unfortunately catch a glimpse of someone taking a dump. Bartender: Sarah, hottie. Super nice. At least come here to say hi to her, if nothing else. Closing statement: After 3 attempts to get in here for a review, finally a success. They are closed often due to lack of customers, but it's a cool place to relax if you are just looking to have a giant schooner of PBR and not worry about the mainline dating scene. read more

The Annex is a great local dive. It's a small place but I've never seen it crowded. We come here for the laid back vibe and the very nice shuffleboard table. The bartenders are always cool and so are the other patrons. They have big size beers, which are awesome, but don't expect any fancy craft beers on tap. read more

The Annex has changed a lot in some ways under new membership. While I usually decry change in a familiar old bar (Limericks, Clancy's, the Acapulco Inn all got fancified to their complete detriment), I can't really complain about the Blizzard beer system, and the fact that there are some pretty flavorful beers on tap. That's certainly to the good. Don't know if the bar really needed trivia machines and the new, crappy internet jukebox (don't know that I've heard it played in the last dozen times I've been there...). Also, it's very white and has many fewer of the decorations that were once Annex standards. But, most of the regulars are the same, and I think that on balance the bar is still a place whose door--or curtain-- I look forward to passing. read more

Easily the greatest dive bar anywhere. The Annex makes me proud to be from Long Beach! I loved the pre-remodel feel of the Annex, old, warm, historic, but the remodel includes a nice collection of flat-screens and new lines for the beer taps. That means you won't miss ANY game while drinking the coldest beer in LB (sorry Joe Jost's!). Prices went up, but it's still cheaper than any place you'll find along 2nd street. Oh, and the shuffleboard table is still the nicest I've ever played on. read more

Best dive bar in LA county (the Swinging Door of Tustin tops this for obvious sexist-motivated reasons). It's a historic locale, that serves large portions of beer for low prices (decent draft selection too), that also has nice sized flat screens. I wish I lived closer so I could frequent more often. Lol! wow, forgot about this place. Was introduced to it by a good friend of mine, told me bout the fish like bowls for beer so I was instantly ready to go. Just like other comments, it is a little hole in the wall, people already gave a good description of the place. My highlight of the night was of course the beer fish bowls! Not a disappointment at all, very very cold (as it should be) had I think 2 or maybe 3.. hmm. don't remember I wonder why?. Gave it 4 stars since it was a great little spot & the size of the drinks was what we were after, there wasn't much of a selection, then again I don't remember what the selection was lol! read more
