The ambiance is first class, with a lovely decor and tables spaced well for conversation. The service was also very good; we had a very attentive waiter. The Cote de Rhône wine was delicious. That was the good. Here's the bad. The green chile in the $20 baked artichoke and green chile dip was non-existent, as was the focaccia toast, which was replaced with burnt white bread toast. The tiny "roasted artichoke" was burned black and unrecognizable. Continuing the blackened theme, the $12 roasted Brussel sprouts were also, somehow, burned black on the outside while remaining raw on the inside. I wish I had thought to take pictures of these truly disappointing and way overpriced dishes. Credit where credit is due: the side of garlic and Parmesan mashed potatoes was very good. read more

No one should be asking if an order of any size is for any individual. We are paying you for your food not your attitude. 2. Of course people picking up an order have the money to pay for it. I'm proud to say I've lived in Albuquerque for the last 10 years and somehow have never made it to Artichoke Cafe. I decided to surprise my best friend for a birthday dinner on Monday night with little expectations and I turned out to be one of the most memorable dining experiences I've had in the 505! We arrived for our 8:30 reservation and we're seated promptly with a great view in the upper dining room tier. I was immediately taken by the vibrant neon signs, colorful pops of decor, and the subtle smell of fresh lilies. We enjoyed a glass of champagne to toast the birthdays girl which paired perfectly with our burrata appetizer. For our main course, I ordered the Steak Frites which has my mouth watering thinking about it all over again. The steak had such a beautiful seated crust and tender middle. It's served on a bed of caramelized onions and chimmichurri on top which really balanced the entire dish. The frites were phenomenal and each had a beautiful crunch (don't forget to ask for the homemade aioli for dipping!). I paired my meal with Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley. My friend order the catch of the day which was a gorgeous piece of seared halibut served with green beans, carrots, but it was really the decadent green chile mashed potatoes that stole the show! She paired her meal with a tasty glass of Sauvy B. All the portions were generous but not too large so you could finish your meal feeling satisfied and complete. We topped off our evening with a nightcap cocktail and split a crème brûlée because there's always room for a birthday dessert. The chef was even kind enough to come out and deliver the dessert himself and check in on how we enjoyed our meals. Our server, Denise was an absolute treat with such helpful advice on what to order and really great attention to detail. She really made my friend feel special when she brought out four different colored candles for her crème brûlée- yellow for friendship, pink for love, blue for passion, and green health and luck. It was truly such a memorable evening and our dinner was even at the peak of the dreamy Pisces full moon. The staff truly made my best friend feel like the most special girl in the room. The odd thing is they don't have many artichokes out of season but the other food made up for it. The wine list is extensive and my mom enjoyed two glasses of wine. I had a specialty Cosmo, very tasty. We had the artichoke dip and each had the Caesar salad, which was lovely and had anchovies on top (non ironic yum!) I had the fish and my mom had the pork loin. The fish was tasty and came with a wonderful faro side mixed with yummy olives and dried tomatoes. The pork loin was very tender, more gently cooked than we are used to, and the wait staff was careful to ask what we preferred. We also got a side of asparagus, steamed and hot off the grill. My girlfriend and I went to Artichoke Cafe for a nice dinner. Appetizers were nice. Drinks were good. Then they brought out the main course. Before the waiter leaves my girlfriend moves a piece of the food on the plate and there's a pubic hair in the four cheese ravioli!! Moreover, it was hidden under a very large garlic slice. I tell the waiter no way and that we are done just bring the check. He tries to tell me that there's a "african American guy" who works in the kitchen and it's not a pubic hair. I don't understand what this has to do with race and I certainly don't understand why he would try to make it about that other than to try to shame us. A hair is a hair and if it looks like a pubic hair I don't think race matters one single bit. This isn't about race! If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's a pubic hair! Where do I start with this place. First I guess we could start with the negative if you want to even call it that. If you have a larger group the waiting area is rather small. However, when you make a reservation and you arrive early they will have you seated before one of your guests gets back from the restroom. There was a gentleman in a white shirt that stood out from the rest of the staff, I'm assuming he was part of the management team. He is very friendly and checks on the guests as much as the wait staff does. Now, the ambiance of the restaurant is very laid back, it's not to noisy that you can't have a conversation but not so quiet that you can hear a pin drop. The menu is very simple with a handful of options so you're not stuck on trying to decide. We ordered 3 starters for my group and they were all exemplary choices. The artichoke green chile dip was superb! The marinated olives were flawless in taste. The perfect mix of salt and savory. It ordered the peppercorn filet and my god... this filet was cooked exactly how I ordered it! Portion size was more than I expected on the main entree. I will say the sides seemed a bit skimped on. I decided on the smashed potatoes and the sautéed onions. I received 3 smashed red potatoes which seems to be the perfect quantity but the onions... I'm not sure I would make that a choice on the menu, just make it part of the dish and maybe offer a wedge salad or the roasted broccolini. I understand it's all about the pairing of the foods which Artichoke Cafe has on point. The horseradish sauce with the filet was a very nice touch. The smashed potato, perfect. The onions considered a side, not so much. Don't get me started on the desert... the vanilla crème brûlée was top notch with a cup drip decaf. Excellent! I try and explore different options when I come to Albuquerque and this one is definitely on my return list. Service 9/10, ambiance 9/10, food and presentation 8/10, taste of entrees??? MF 30/10! We started with, A-hem, steamed artichoke :) it came with three different dipping sauces: tomato-based sauce, garlic-cream, and melted butter. The creamy garlic sauce was the winner for me. The melted butter was surprisingly good as well. It had caught me off guard because I was not really a big fan of dipping anything in butter I ordered the lamb chops with mashed sweet potatoes. As an Albuquerque transplant, I had been told by many people that the Artichoke Cafe had great food, but I had never looked too closely and had assumed it was a real cafe. When the boyfriend made us reservations I was confused as to why he was wearing a sports coat for dinner. Boy, this place is good. Thankfully I got the memo and dressed appropriately to receive this food. The atmosphere is a great place for a celebratory dinner or even a first date. The tables for pairs are fairly close, but the music and noise level creates a comfortable space for nice conversation and eavesdropping only if you're interested. The FOOD. I love scallops, but I do not order them often. These were absolutely perfect, with wax beans and a great risotto that came out at just the right time. Our server was a little busy, but he took care of us and did a wonderful job sensing that we were ready to have our food and then enjoy each other's company after the meal. The alcohol menu is extensive; in fact, there are two full menus for drinks. If you are a wine or beer enthusiast, I would recommend this place even for appetizers and sharing a few drinks with a friend. Overall, wonderful experience. I knew it was a good choice the minute we walked in. It's a very lovely place. Immediately noticeable was that they were manned by a highly trained group of staff. Evident by their very professional manner during our first meet. I had their wonderful full rack of lamb. It didn't disappoint. It was very tasty, tender and suffice to say I was instantly a fan! We shared their wonderful deconstructed cheese and if you are in the mood for one drop by and try this with some red wine. Between the four of us we all were very happy with our choices. The ambiance was nice, we ended up sitting in the back room because the host mistakenly thought we had a part of 5 and that was probably the only downside having to wait a very long time for a table for a large group when it was just me and my mom. When the host sat me and my mom and asked about the another guests, I told her it was just a party of 2 not 5 people, but our online RSVP time was 5pm so maybe that caused the confusion. I've been in Albuquerque several times and have struggled to find something worthwhile. The valet at the Hotel Chaco recommended it. BTW, a great hotel! The menu offers variety without being overwhelming. Food, cocktails and wine were great. So was our server. His name was Sam. We love tequila and Michael, the bartender, came by and gave us an education on Mezcal. We also met one of the new owners and they are 100% committed to service and upscale dining. We had a great dinner at The Artichoke Cafe! We started with the warm olives and the arancini. Both were a tasty way to start our meal. My Teaflower Sour cocktail was balanced and enjoyable. For my entree I had the bone-in pork chop. It was perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned. We added the carrots with tzatziki, which were very nice. Made an online reservation for a Friday at 7:00 pm. We were seated in the bar area with a window seat.  It was dinner theatre with a street flower seller on the corner that we watched.  Started with a mussels appetizer special, mussels in a broth with basil. A surprise dish the broth was quite the elixir.  Also had the citrus warm olives.  A good variety of flavors and textures.  Husband had the halibut and I ordered the signature Artichoke ravioli.  Both dishes were presented as advertised and the flavors were very nice (tipping the ravioli dish to spoon up all the sauce is a must. Ok so starting with the Parking situation, I was already impressed because they have their very own parking attendant. It's this buff dude that watches over your car. Since the restaurant is in downtown, there's a lot of heavy foot traffic amongst addicts and degenerates. When I go anywhere nice, (or anywhere in general) I really don't want to be solicited for money so having this imposing parking attendant nearby was such a nice gesture. Anyway, let's cut to the food. For appetizers I got the mussels and it was to DIE FOR! The mussel broth had the perfect balance of sweet and saltiness. I felt like I was in the middle of the ocean eating these. You could truly taste the gift of the sea. For my entree I got the scallops. There were 3 pieces and they were huge! They were like the size of large marshmallows except bigger and plumper. The scallops came with enoki mushrooms and had truffle shavings on top of a bed of purple rice. Every flavor was well-balanced, not overpowering one another. However, if you are picky when it comes to food textures I think the enoki mushrooms and scallops would be a bit much. But then again, eaters sensitive to texture probably wouldn't order this anyway. read more

Posting this well after the meal due to the euphoric food-coma. We don't head here often (first time in about 10 years for me) because it's a serious fine-dining place with the price-tag to match (a little over $200 for three adults). The experience is worth it, mind you. Between myself, R, and our dining companion, we tried the steak tartare, the appetizer of the day, the lamb rib, the pork chop, the steak tenderloin, and a couple desserts. The steak tartare is tiny, proportioned, no doubt, perfect to match the quail egg that tops the dish. The special appetizer for our visit was much more generous. We had never even imagined the flavor combination of smoked artichoke, crab cake, and duck chicharones... Turns out, that combination is quite amazing. The pork chop and lamb rib were extremely generous portions, while the beef tenderloin is more in line with the controlled portion size I expect from fine dining. Every piece of meat was expertly seasoned to bring out and compliment it's natural flavors, and cooked to perfection. The sides were excellent compliments to the main protein, and all 3 of us were quite pleased. Due to the controlled portion on the steak, we had room for dessert. I can't recall the name of the fruity dessert concoction we ordered, because it was greatly overshadowed by the panna cotta, which was one of the most purely perfect dessert experiences ever. read more
