We checked out The Backspace cause Austin Monthly rated it one their best new restaurants. We concur. It's a beautiful space in downtown Austin. Our wine was delicious. They have ice cold Peroni beer on tap which was perfect with our appetizer, lamb and pork meatballs. The fennel sausage pizza was tasty and we loved the meat and cheese plate. First the good stuff: The space is cool, the wine list is great, the tomato sauce and basil on the pizza were very tasty. And now the bad: The crust on the pizza was burned all over and that charred bread completely ruined the pizza I ordered. I mentioned it to the waiter and he made some excuse about the oven being really hot. That doesn't mean you have to char the pizza. Overall: I won't go back. My roommate and I have been big fans of Parkside for a while so we decided to give The Backspace a try when it opened. We started out with a few of the antipasta's of which the Octopus was definitely the best. The rest were only so so and I wouldn't really consider ordering them again. The pizza's were pretty great though. We started off with the Arugula pizza. It had just the right amount of goat cheese in it and also had some citrus which gave it a very interesting and distinct flavor. It turned out to be my favorite pizza of the night. In addition to that, we also ordered the pepperoni, the sausage and peppers, and the Margarita. All of them were very good and perfectly baked. It was only their second night opening so I was surprised to find such a high level of perfection already. Overall a good experience and we'll definitely be back again. read more

My Wife and I arrived late on a saturday. We sat at the bar close to the pizza ovens and had a perfect experience. The bartender was attentive but not bothersome, the food was perfectly timed - we never felt rushed or hurried despite the restaurant being absolutely packed. I would recommend not getting a table here as part of the fun is watching the pizza and appetizers get made, and smelling the wood from the brick oven. We ordered the margherita pizza and the roasted mushroom pizza. Both were amazing. The basil on the margherita was strong but balanced by the mozzarella. The mushrooms on other pizza were slightly citrusy but woodsy and full of "umami". The ricotta cheese added a depth to the pizza that made it my personal favorite. What a gem! Forgot I was steps away from 6th street....stopped in for an early dinner while on business travel. Roasted peaches was very chic and yummy! Not sweet. We had meatballs and a pepperoni Americano pizza. Not sure the exact names and being familiar with Italian would help in ordering from the menu. All was delicious. Hazelnut chocolate custard was delicious! Almost didn't go in by the looks from the outside, but was very surprised once inside to find a very modern eclectic atmosphere with intimate seating. Very very little seating. Like maybe 10 tables tops! Plus bar seating. They said they take reservations so may be a good idea on weekends or lunch and dinner hours to plan ahead. I'll admit- Backspace has been my go to for awhile in Austin for decent pizza. The char is good and the prosciutto is cut from a leg. They put no dressing on the rucola. They had nice per glass offerings of wine. Not any more. Now you cannot even order a glass of Pinot Grigio. You can order a bottle. A bottle of Pinot Grigio for $48. At a pizzeria. Same for Barbera, Dolcetto, etc. Forget it. Bottle only. Overly young dirt ONLY, now available by the glass for ca. $15. AND now they serve the burrata with a very generous pour over of...aioli. Yes. Aioli. On burrata. I could not help but leave before I discovered what they had done to the pizza Bianca. Total disgrace. Don't go. It's a small little place, but packing big flavor and excellent service. The pizzas have that perfect quality of thin middle crust, leading to that doughy carb-fiend perfected edge. We went to Moonshine but they were closed, so they suggested we come here. We got there about 30 minutes before they closed, and I used to be a server, so I know what it's like when customers come in late, but there were two other tables eating at that time also. The server was not horrible, but she was very stand-offish and not warm at all. And we're cool. We like to joke around and have fun with our servers, but she was having none of that. We got a salad and shared a pepperoni pizza. The salad was so-so and the pizza was one of the worst I've ever had - void of any flavor whatsoever. We sat at the bar, and even though we only ordered Cokes to drink with our meal, the bartender was extremely attentive. When we tried to dine in without one the wait was estimated to be 1 - 1.5 hours long. lamb and pork meatballs (3/5) - tender. not what we expected, came out in a mini iron skillet...bubbly cheese and tomato sauce. nothing crazy, but solid. bianca (4/5) - C is usually not a fan of arugula (bitter), but it went so well with the pizza. a nice peppery kick to the mellow cheeses. we opted to add an egg on top, but i'm not sure it really made a difference for $2.50 more. jumped on the bandwagon, i'm a fan : ) can't wait to go back to try more pizzas. shame we didn't go with a bigger group so that we could try more things. probably could fit a max of 6 people. read more

I had dinner here on a recent trip to Austin. It's hard to find this place on a map, as it's not directly at the street intersection. Be careful when trying to find it! It was a pleasant meal of shared appetizers and pizza - but didn't seem to be anything over-the-top special. The ambiance is dark and the tables are raw wood. The tap water was nicely served in reused wine bottles, and the glassware is made out of the bottoms of old wine bottles. This place has a warm, quiet, artistic feel. My table shared a baked brie appetizer, and then a couple pizzas. The food was quite tasty overall, and we had plenty to share between all of us. The service was decent. We did wait between bottles of water to be refilled - probably because they were dark and it was hard for the waitress to tell if they were full. No real complaints throughout, though. If I do return to Austin, I'd check out some of the hundreds of other restaurants along the main drag of the City: 6th Street. read more

Was craving pizza and wanted something different than the normal pizza chain restaurant so we decided to give this place a try. Pros: Got the fennel sausage and was pleasantly surprised. The brick oven really comes in clutch when differentiating itself from other pizza places around Austin. The crust was perfectly crispy and the combination of all the toppings weren't that heavy. I'd imagine the other flavors are really good as well. Service was really nice and understanding. Changed the order a few times, but the waitress was really accommodating despite being understaffed. Fantastic. While the yelp reviews for the Austin metro were hit and miss, this one is underrated as far as i'm concerned. I got there around 7 minutes before closing time on a Sunday (10pm). I had a backup BBQ place I saw on the way but it felt like a night for pizza. Starchy, crispy and chewy, all at the same time. The place is small (I think, there might be a more room in the back because Pizzas were heading that way) and, well, run down. At the dark hours of of Sunday night, I thought there's a good chance this building is not suitable to serve as a public place. It was clean though. The "Kitchen", aka a wood fire oven was ablaze and a small floured counter next to it was the workbench where the pizza is prepared. The menu is short, I think they have 6-7 types of pizza. I didn't have a chance to take a good look at the appetizers and whatnot, I was distracted by the server that was asking what I want to drink. Since there's one option on tap, I kept it simple. The cook/chef/piazolo (I think that's a word) were making 4-5 at the same time, and it took less than 2 minutes for the to be in the oven, which to me, is one of the best signs for quality pizza. I believe I ordered the meat option, and it was faboulus. The source was sweet and tangy, and the crust was damn near perfect. I think I broke the world record of consuming a pizza in under 30 seconds give and take a 20 minutes. I went back the following night. I think that says it all... read more

I stopped by The Backspace for dinner on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was dimly lit, had a nice atmosphere and wasn't too busy. I was seated and served quickly. I ordered the margherita pizza with prosciutto and a glass of rose. I could see the chef making the pizza and cook it in their front of house, wood oven. The pizza was delicious and the wine was wine. I am not a wine expert so I'm honestly not sure it it was good, but it wasn't bad. This place is definitely worth checking out if you're stopping by Austin and are craving pizza :) read more

Upon arrival we were asked if we had a reservation and told that we only had an hour and a half to eat. Two strikes and we haven't even sat down yet. We wanted a 12 inch pizza made 1/2 and 1/2. For the first time ever we were told no can do. No straws available for the tall skinny soft drink glasses. No refills offered. Check comes without a "thank you" but did have a "wellness fee". The server said it was added automatically like that was a good excuse. The manager then "automatically" took it off. The pie was good but didn't make up for the attitude. read more

The Backspace is a hidden gem!!! Sexy and cozy ambiance. Reservations definitely recommended. Intimate tables fill the space with the bar severing as a focal point. Dim lit and sexy vibe. Excellent pizza!!! Perfect, doughy, chewy crust. Not soggy, but not crispy. Just right. Sauce and toppings are fresh and neither overwhelm or underwhelm the pizza. You can either eat by hand or with a fork/knife. Wine selection is very nice but on the higher price point scale compared to other local restaurants. But a decent offering of glasses or bottles. Ordered over the phone for a to-go order. They had us to pay in advance, asked ahead for any gratuity, then told us a 15 minute wait. We walked over and arrived promptly when we expected it. Walked in and were told they would bring it out to us if we waited outside since they wanted to keep their room below capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions. Didn't give us a time frame. After waiting another 25 minutes outside, my wife goes in to check and find out they haven't made it yet. Wood fired doesn't take long. Busy, I get it. Know in advance how to set expectations for delivery/pickup timeframes. Please. Had one guy working his tail off at the oven, but the others can't really expedite the process, just add to the growing list of orders. Finally got our food, about a 45 minute wait. Perfectly simple and elegant rustic decor, a wood burning pizza oven and wonderful smells. Amazingly friendly waitress. The most delicious combination of flavors. The pizza was delicious. Perroni was a great complement and the ricotta antipasta melted me. The cheesecake dessert made me groan. For what this place is, I'm a pretty big fan. It is a tiny, intimate restaurant that does a great job of taking over your senses. At peak dining hours everyone is seated pretty closely together, the lights are dim, candles flicker everywhere, soft but upbeat music let conversation and laughter flow throughout, and the smells...oh the smells are too good. I've come here for one-on-one dinners and also with a small group for a birthday and just felt delighted by the ambience. While its not the best pizza I've ever had (though certainly very good, especially if you like thin crust), the environment is one that is hard to match. The Marina is forgettable and the Margherita is yummy and above average but nothing spectacular. The Roasted Mushroom is phenomenal and a truly unique pie, boasting capers and zesty ricotta alongside plenty of savory mushrooms. Again, it is not the best pizza in Austin and not my favorite place. But I really do enjoy dining here. I probably wouldn't return with a large group, but if you can manage to park/get a ride here, it is worth checking out at least for the mushroom pizza and the environment. read more

Some of the best pizza in Austin! They use a traditional brick oven and wood. It just adds that authentic Neapolitan charred pizza crust flavor. The mushroom or sausage and pepper are my two favorite pies. Avoid the pepperoni one unless you know what you're doing, it's not the same pepperoni you're used to on most American style pizzas, and has a more sour taste. The appetizers are all delicious as are the desserts. The pizzas feature fresh cheese (you can taste the subtle lemon it's just amazing) and the crusts drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. The staff are friendly and not too intrusive. It is a very small, intimate setting with few tables. Perfect for a date. Make sure you get a reservation and know that during peek hours they only let you hold a table for a little over an hour before you're asked to give it up so arrive on time!
