Beyond disappointed in my visit to Backyard Grill. I was skeptical to try form the beginning since it used to be an Outback Stakehouse, but my BF convinced me to give the place. We arrived on a Saturday morning around 1115/1130 and were really looking forward to breakfast and the all day happy hour. When we go there, there weren't many people in the restaurant and we were seated right away. With that being said, we had to wait 15 minutes for our waiter to come by and take our order. Mind you, our waiter walked passed us a number of times and only came by after we let the hostess know that no one had come by our table. When the waiter finally showed up, he was very rude and seemed irritated that we were looking to place an order. He seemed really pushed to edge when I asked him about the happy hour specials. When our food came out the first time, it was wrong and had to be taken back. When our food came out the second time, I noticed that the blueberries I ordered with my pancakes came on top, not inside (this should really be noted on the menu) also, our food was cold. I don't see myself visiting again. The quality of the food and the service aren't worth the decent prices. read more

However, the next two visits, we had sub-par service and our food was wrong. Then, the last time, our service was abysmally slow, though the waitress was sweet. The food was lackluster. This was just a few nights ago. Tonight, upon realizing that my baby may have dropped his amber necklace there, I called to check. My first time visiting and this is one of the best places I have ever dined at. The staff is very attentive and friendly. I never had to ask for a refill, our waitress always made a new drink appear. We had the MOAB and Redneck fries. Both were great in flavor and taste. Below is all that was left of the fries because they were just too damn good and I chowed down on them as soon as they arrived. The BYG is very kid friendly and they even host weekly kid events along with having live music and Pint nights throughout the month. The prices are fair and aren't overly priced. There is also a $46 giant burger and if you finish it under an hour it's free. Also if you tell them this is your first time visiting free tortilla chips and salsa. I had a terrible first time experience, I was forced to pay a 15% gratuity tip on a 4 person order and to top it off got disrespected by the manager, it's not professional to call a customer "shitty" quote on quote the specific word the MANAGER used. He rubbed in my face that his waiter got paid 2.30 and hour and that I was a "shitty" person for tipping $2. As a service provider (I am a hairstylist) I understand $2 is nothing but I was not going to pay $90 when I was supposed to pay $76, all I had was $78 and I was willing to give every cent I had but apparently that makes me a "shitty" person. read more

Repeat customer. Came here for Valentines day dinner. Decided to have crawfish. I spent a lot of money on crawfish here last year. This was the first visit this year. Either the service was slow or the kitchen was behind when we first got here. Took probably 20 minutes to get the crawfish. Ordered 3 pounds of spicy and 2 pounds of medium. What we got were lukewarm crawfish, no potatoes and cold little ears of corn. The spicy crawfish we're literally soaked in the hot sauce. When the waitress asked if everything was OK, I told her not really and listed what was wrong. Consumed about 1/2 of what was brought out, then without any prompting from me, the kitchen manager sent out a complete new order to the table! Crawfish were hot, corn was fresher, it had potatoes and the seasoning on the spicy crawfish portion was much better. Nice recovery by the manager. We'll be back. This is still my favorite Sunday breakfast hangout. read more

No matter what you are craving from a simple snack, tasty burger ( of which there are several ), to specialty sandwiches or a basket of juicey wings and full and flavorful family classic entrées its here to be found. Any of these can and should be washed down with many of the revolving craft beers they have on hand. Can't decide then any of the friendly bartenders or waitstaff are happy to assist. We came here the other night because it's right around the corner from our new house in Steeplechase. The pluses: I got the MOAB burger and it was excellent. Perfectly cooked and the smoked taste was really great. Very good beer selection on draft. Very friendly staff. Very accommodating if you have little ones. It's clean and attractive. There's a patio on each side and one of them is dog friendly. The negatives: We ordered the onion rings and while they looked big and delicious they had absolutely no flavor. Would it kill you to add some seasoning? With some seasoning they would have been great. It could be they just forgot. It was the same thing with the fries. They looked big and delicious but had no flavor. We ordered drinks and our waiter disappeared. We were confused why it took so long to get beers when there were only 2 other customers and 6 people that worked there just sort of walking around. The waiter forgot to bring blue cheese like I requested. He never came back so I couldn't ask again. You can't get a pint of most of the stronger beers. Why?? I'll pay extra! Hoppalicious is great but I really wanted an Enjoy By or an Art Car and screw that 8 or 10 oz nonsense. Stupid. Coming from San Diego you'd get kicked out of town for that crap. Chances are we'll be back but I left feeling like with a few little tweaks it could have been a better experience, and we'd be back way more often. read more

Standard neighborhood casual family joint. We come here for burgers if we don't feel like going cooking or going far, it's the kind of place you're glad to have close by. Good beer selection and a separate bar area if that's all you want. There is a sandbox out on the patio for kids to play in and plenty of TVs throughout the restaurant and they will put any game you want on. Service is always friendly and fast. Pretty good selection on the menu of the standard American fare of burgers/sandwiches and grilled entrees and of course a variety of appetizers. The spinach dip was pretty plain but combining it with the salsa that comes with helps. The fried stuff is as good as anywhere else. The burgers are big and they have some interesting varieties. Very happy with them. I am not a fan of their fries though. Steak fries, not sure what they're fried in but it's not my style. If they changed their fries I would find myself going here a lot more but I'm sure others like them just fine. I have never been for the brunch but I would expect good things. The service was good, our server was very kind and attentive. We sat outside next to the sandbox, which was perfect for our son. And they no longer allow smoking inside, which is great! I can't tell you if it was good or not because I did not receive chicken fried steak. I get back to my hotel and open my food to find chicken, not steak. As for the chicken fried CHICKEN, it was dry and lacked any seasoning. The toast was dry and rubbery. The Seasoned fries were the only thing half decent inside that food box. I then grabbed my desert box and opened up what I was expecting to be this awesome cheesecake that they boast about on their menu. I don't know where they get off calling that cheesecake, or if they sent me the wrong item all together like they did for my meal, but that is not cheesecake and whatever the hell it was it was not good. He's a hot commodity here, sometimes is section is full, but if you get the chance to be taken care of by him, your experience will be exceptional. This place is like a NW Houston Cheers, where everyone can call it home. The staff is friendly and treats you like a regular on that show. They believe they are the family friendly restaurant and it shows in their sponsorship of the BYG golf tournament to raise money for little league teams, and in their support of soccer, baseball, wrestling, football, cheerleading, and dance teams from the Cy Fair Independent School District. I don't find that common amongst restaurants, even in generous Houston. They have a menu with a variety of foods, but what they do well is anything that's mesquite grilled. This isn't to say the non-grilled is poor; everything I've had their has been good but the mesquite grille is where they shine. They have a large sandbox with toys on the outside boardwalk eating area. Kids love that, they have a tough time sitting still thru a meal so a respite in the box is good for them. There's a kid's menu with cool items and they will substitute veggies for fries if you want. kids under 12 get sodas free. They make a favorite burger of mine, the MOAB. The Mother Of All Burgers - Bacon Cheeseburger fully loaded with mushrooms, jalapeos, American and Swiss cheese. There's also the Big Daddy which is basically a MOAB with double everything - patties, cheese, etc. - but I'm not that much of a glutton so I'll leave it for someone else to try. You can tell the burgers are not frozen Sysco - they are irregular in shape showing their hand-formed origin. Their seasoned fries are nice, not so much seasoning the potato flavor gets lost. Bonus point to them - they know that Blue Moon wheat beer gets a slice of orange, and not lemon! read more

OK, so the sweet tea was SO GOOD!! However here is how the rest of the meal went: Chicken wings: I give a 3 out of 5 possible "Drewzies". The buffalo sauce was delicious! But minus 2 stars because the wings were SO fatty! Ribs (pork): The flavor was great! But they were overcooked, dry and so tough! I give them 2 out of possible 5 "Drewzies" Steak Fries: These were my favorite part of the of our meal. Perfectly fried and seasoned 5 out of 5 "Drewzies". I went here for lunch yesterday and me likey. Not lot's to give it the 5 Star rating, but enough for me to want to see what more this place has to offer. Get this: It's a playground of decor inside. Full faux tree with lot's of Southern lore hanged from it. Cuteness plus iMO. The waitstaff are very happy and earthy. Like to welcome and give you the vibe of being at your grandma's backyard while you peruse the menu. I love that stuff. I had the best catfish burger (YIKES? I never thought that would be possible.) in my life. Well, it's not a burger, it's a HOT CAT! LOL! the name alone made me want to order it. It's grilled catfish, jalepeno, cheese and other fixin's on an onion roll served with the best home cut fresh fries ever. Dish delish. For those that love the real beef burger...this is your mecca. WoW. Real selections that made me want one or two or three. Damn, this place it interesting and good! I can't wait to go back for some more fun lunch. So i went there with my gf and another friend on Saturday 20th to get some crawfish. So it started off with our waitress telling us her life story of her her ex boyfriend and her kids and how he was no help and she was working two jobs and going to school etc this was before we even had water. I ordered the breakfast bowl which for the price I believe was small. The crawfish came out and it was average. The kicker to the whole experience was another waitress came over and knock over a glass or water all over the table didn't even bother to clean it all up and walked off since I was trying to help her. I then put all of the wet stuff on the table behind me which they then sat someone else at. Then for the icing on the cake when our first waitress came back with the check she reminded us of her situation. I guarantee I will never come back the this place again. The reviews looked good, it was near another place we planned to visit, and they had fried pickles on the menu. Also, crowns are nice, but I like to do something different when the opportunity presents itself. I wasn't overly impressed with anything unfortunately. The service was as mediocre as the food. I ordered their grilled chicken with mushrooms and Monterrey Jack cheese. I guess I thought the grill process would give the chicken some flavor (like a smokiness maybe), but nothing. I got a baked potato on the side and I guess they used mild cheddar because that was bland as well. I could taste sour cream and that's about it. The fried pickles did have a good flavor though - they added some pepper to the batter. That's better than nothing and I wondered why they couldn't do something so simple for the grilled chicken. My husband liked his ribs though. He said the sauce was somewhat bland and underwhelming, but that the meat had a decent flavor. read more

I have been here a few times over the past few years and have really enjoyed my meals. I love the patio area with its cute lights. They have a sandbox for kids too, for those interested. One of the first times here I had some grilled chicken and a cocktail. The drink wasn't very strong, but it was tasty. The chicken is really juicy and has a great grilled taste. I've also tried some of their sides...mashed potatoes and green beans. Loved the green beans, especially. They were cooked with red onions and it gave them a little extra oomph. I got a burger my most recent time there because I was jealous of my friends enjoying their burgers the previous time. Again, it too had that great grilled taste, like it was cooked in a backyard, stayin true to their name. It was quite greasy and made the bun a little flimsy, but still enjoyable. My bf got a steak (it was on special) cooked in red wine and he thought it was great, too. I snuck some of the vegetables off his plate, hehe. I would recommend this place if you live in the area. We love coming to this place. It makes supporting the local restaurants a real pleasure. Their sweet tea is heavenly; the chips and salsa are great as well. I love their burgers. We come in at least once a month and enjoy the atmosphere. They have a covered patio when it's tolerable to sit outside for more than 10 minutes. The prices are reasonable for their portion sizes. There is something on the menu for everyone, from a loaded potato with fresh grilled chicken to fried pickles (which I highly recomment for other pregnant ladies) to a light dessert. Their beer list is extensive and they are proud to display 'beers of the week'. The bourbon pecan chicken has been a favorite of mine since Day 1. My daughter wanted to go somewhere with good burgers for her birthday dinner. I think the big tree was one of the deciding factors in my daughters decision to choose Backyard Grill over another Cyoress eatery also known primarily for its burgers, even though the "other" place had more Yelp reviews (yes, we checked) at a slightly higher rating. Well, if that's the case, I can't wait to check the other one out, because everything here was outstanding....service, atmosphere, and of course the food. We went on a Saturday night, prime-time, and were greeted immediately and seated with no wait. The big tree all lit up certainly gives the dining area an "outdoor" backyard feel, and the decor in general adds to the Texas charm here, old license plates, etc. Our waiter, Miles, was super friendly and chatted with us about "the beast" ( the 4 lbs of meat plus fries and all the fixings...eat it in one hour and it's free, saving you $47 ) as well as their offer to get your name on the wall after satisfactorily drinking ( well, purchasing anyway) 55 Texas beers, mainly of the "craft" variety. I was sold, so I got my self a Karbach IPA and my punchcard ....only 54 more to go! Oh....the food....3 of us had burgers, one had chicken strips. Burgers here are right up there! Lots of choices of bun type, toppings. My wife had the honey bourbon one (which she ranted and raved about) and I had the "maverick" ....Mine had fried onion strings and fried jalapeños as well as the other standard fare, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Subbed the sweet Potato fries for regular, they were on point too. There's not one thing we would have changed, and for sure will be back! It was pretty empty for a Saturday, which was kind of sad, because I found this restaurant to be a pleasant surpise. I wasn't expecting too much -- my first impression based on what I'd heard was that it would be a "neighborhood grill" kind of place, a la Applebees. Not generally my favorite cuisine, but OK, especially since we had a coupon (gotta love coupons! yay!) When we entered, I was fascinated by the decor -- a giant fake tree sits in the middle of the restaurant -- I know, it's fake, and a little silly, but I thought it was pretty cool! Maybe at heart I'm not just that sophisticated (no maybe about it! I'm not.) We were quickly greeted by Brian, a very friendly guy with a cool hat, who proceeded to guide us through the menu, once he found out it was our first visit. We were also treated with complimentary chips and salsa for our first visit, and the manager came over and told us about their frequent diner card, which we signed up for. VERY friendly folks -- and if you've ever read any of my reviews, you know that I'm a HUGE fan of good service. Well, we certainly got it! The chips and salsa were good, but the salsa portion was VERY small. Normally, these are an appetizer item that you pay for, but for us they were free, so I didn't say anything. Perhaps if you pay, you get a larger portion of salsa? If not, this would be a pretty bad value, although the salsa is very tasty -- not worth three bucks for a tiny cup of salsa and chips! We also paid for an appetizer -- buffalo wings. I love me some good buffalo wings, and these were among the best I've had! We were offered a choice of buffalo sauce or homemade "wing sauce" -- we chose the wing sauce, which, curiously enough, tasted exactly like traditional buffalo sauce, though a bit more jazzy. Yeah, jazzy, it's a technical culinary term, look it up! Any-hoo, when we asked Brian about the sauce, explaining that this sauce TASTED like jazzy buffalo sauce, he told us that THEIR buffalo sauce is more like a barbecue sauce. Huh? I'm pretty sure that buffalo sauce never tastes like barbecue sauce. I'm still a little confuzzled by this, but whatever. If you do order these, though, make sure you clarify what you're getting! At any rate, the wings were great, and an impressive portion -- we got the small, and it came with about ten wings, I think. My wife ordered the Cypress burger, which I think had avacado on it, but I really can't remember. She said it was great. I had a bite. It was. Best of all, they cooked the burger to order -- we like our burgers bleeding, and they did it that way -- yay for Texas! The seasoned fries that came with the burger were magnificent -- not sure if they make them there, but whatever they are, they're great! I got the shrimp brochette -- large shrimped stuffed with monterey jack cheese and jalapenos, and then wrapped in bacon and grilled -- OH MY GOSHNESS -- it was like a wonderful explosion of wonderfulness, absolutely brilliant, amazing, and awesome! yay! GET THIS DISH! The sides (which I got to choose) were mashed potatotes and broccoli -- the mashed were just OK -- the fries were WAY better than the mashed. The broccoli was very good, obviously fresh -- nice to see them not using frozen veggies! For dessert, we got something called a triple Lindy -- a homemade cookie and brownie with ice cream. It was pretty tasty, but not my favorite part of the visit. Overall, VERY happy with this experience -- I wish their breakfast was as good, but that's OK, there are plenty of great breakfast joints around! read more

I have been coming here for years and years. However, today was by far the most disappointing trip there. The food is always great and the service is always average but never EVER again am I sitting in the bar area. Me and my fiance were sat down on a Sunday afternoon around 2. One girl at the bar was already drunk or on drugs and being encouraged and laughing with the girls behind the bar as she stood up and proceeded to shake her tits. Did that for a solid 5 mins. Then I had the pressure of hearing how drunk the bartender got a few nights ago and lost her voice from how much she had thrown up. Poor girl. Then I got to to feel my IQ drop as the bartender and the girl discussed how big each others butts were and how they should "totally measure them" . Let's not get into the deep conversation of men's testicles i had the honor to listen to. This is not a reflection on the whole place. While trying to decide on a place for dinner my party decided on this place because of the tree inside the restaurant. We came here on a Saturday night and were seated in about 20 minutes. Our waitress heather was awesome. There were a few guys in our party that asked really vague questions about the menu and Heather was very informative. The food was bomb! Everyone in the party was totally satisfied and we experimented with the full range on the menu. Artichoke dip, quesadillas, burgers, ribs, sandwiches, crawfish, and sides. All delicious. The Backyard Grill is a comfortable, casual, family friendly resturaunt with great benefits. They often have "Charachters" come to visit for the kids, last time they had spongebob and they even have trivia games on the table for families to enjoy. The food is delicious, I have not yet come across an item I did not like their menu contains literally any type of food you desire and it is all quality food. As far as the service is concerned, we always sit in the bar which is open seating, the bartenders/servers are always very polite and are willing to start conversation. We always see the same two girls working when the boyfriend and I go and they are just sweethearts. Another great thing about this place is that if you join their "club" you can obtain points and earn a free meal, discounts, etc. they even throw in a few perks for your birthday. Now, for those of you who love CRAWFISH, even though it is still very early in the season they purchase "selects" which are the big craw daddys, you have about 5 different spice choices and they are all delicious. Also, just like the crawfish...BYG offers their own hotsauces (about 12 different kinds) that are made in house.
