One of my favorite places to go in Stowe! We always come here for dinner when we visit. The Mac and cheese is literally amazing, get the larger portion haha. The veggie burger is good but not the best because it kind of falls apart. My fiancé got the dry rub chicken wings and liked them. He also got the fried chicken sandwich which he liked a lot. The Vermont Toddy kept me nice and warm too! read more

Agree with Alice H. Food is bland - but that's generally an issue throughout Vermont. Got the Bench burger- asked them to add the horseradish mayo from another sandwich. Without it- def very bland. Nachos were too sweet- did not enjoy. Fries were not enjoyable either - over fried and too salty. Excellent service- very nice and fast. The Bench reminds me of the typical chain eatery- TGIF's, Chili's, Applebees. They have that type of fare here- burgers, ribs, other types of sandwiches, wings- and pizza. I'd say their food varies from being a bit better than these other places in some ways, and a bit worse. Depends on what you get. For example, I had the Bench burger- a fairly large (6 oz?) burger with cheddar, caramelized onions, lettuce, and a special sauce (think thousand island with a bit of heat!). The burger was cooked perfectly- pink in the middle, not over cooked and dried out. Toppings were good. And I enjoyed the spiciness of the sauce. All in all- a five star effort. However, my side of Mac and cheese was a bit lacking. It was bland and almost tasteless. I wouldn't have known there was any cheese in the dish unless I had read the menu. Quite disappointing- especially considering the association of cheddar cheese with the state of Vermont!!! I'd certainly return - I want to try the ribs and wings. If you're looking for decent and familiar food, the Bench is a good place to pull up a seat at. read more

Three and a half stars. On a Monday evening-40+ minute wait for a table. Service was friendly, and competent. We ordered 2 cocktails. They both were loaded with ice, and the alcohol (maple rum) was non existent. I understand that sometimes you can't taste the alcohol-but the absence of any "buzz" confirmed my suspicions, that the bartender purposely shorted our drinks. Poutine was ok. The hand cut fries were cooked beautifully; the sage gravy was very sage-y. I would have personally preferred a rich beef gravy. They were very skimpy on the cheese curds. 4 large pieces of curds, for an entire plate of fries. A real poutine has cheese curds tossed throughout; this was a pale imitation of the Quebecois delicacy. Lastly, we both ordered chicken pot pie. 90% of the dish is mashed potatoes. I had about 3 small shreds of chicken in my entire dish. Besides the biscuit-the dish was actually pretty bland and underseasoned. Maybe we were just cranky after waiting so long for the table...or maybe this place just isn't all that it's cracked up to be. read more

Pretty good! Not fine dining but good quality bar food. Definitely a sports bar and not a pub - didn't even have a list of available beers. Items we tried included nachos, burgers, and fish & chips - all were very good to excellent. Not too many people are converging on this place yet - no wait on a Sunday evening when other places had waits over an hour. I've been coming to this place every year during my annual winter trip to Stowe. There's a good reason why it can be difficult to get a table here, even on a week night. I highly recommend the burrata, but skip the pizza (the sauce is not great). Drinks are excellent, and there is a separate cozy bar area with plenty of seating if you can't get a table. Service is always great, and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. The perfect ending to a long day on the slopes. A word of advice: Put your name in early for a table, or you might have to find someplace else to eat! read more

We were recently in Stowe for vacation and found The Bench for an early dinner one night. We walked in and they were able to seat our group of six without wait. They have an expansive menu, we got mussels, poutine, steak, ribs and the duck. Everything was delicious, piping hot and surprisingly affordable! Would definitely recommend. read more

Had a bit of a wait on a Tuesday night, apparently a number of restaurants are closed Tuesday in Stowe so they end up pretty busy. The margarita pizza was good, beer choices were good and service was pleasant. The salmon tacos were a bit on the dry side which seems odd since salmon is a bit more forgiving when grilled than some other fish. read more

I always come here when I am in Stowe. A great spot for good food & a large menu. The service is quick and friendly. The ambiance feels like a log cabin feel with soft lighting. Highly recommend! If you cannot get a table (since it's usually busy) there are two bars with seating as well. Huge draft beer menu as well! Great place! read more

We were there at 6pm this evening. Our server was okay. My spouse wanted A1 with her steak that she asked for when she ordered her steak. She didn't get the A1 until a while after she received her steak. Server didn't check back with us when we received our food until I was almost done with my ribs. Arrived with 40 minute wait on a table, which was okay because we got seats right at the bar. Drinks were good, but had to put up with a sarcastic and rude bartender who made you feel like you were putting him out. Specialty cocktails were weak. House salad had no taste. Asked for extra dressing on the side to hopefully add more flavor. We ordered one pizza for the two of us, which was honestly disgusting. We didn't even finish it. Coming from Connecticut, we know good pizza. This was not good, which was surprising because the last time we came ( a few years back) it was memorable. Totally disappointing. We here twice during our trip to Vermont. First visit I had the duck, hubby tried it and couldn't wait to return so he could order. We got the fries for an app.. the ones everyone suggested you should have (I think with sage) hubby had the buffalo Mac and Cheese. 2nd visit I had the pepperoni pizza and the smoked wings which were great, hubby had the duck. Service was great during both visits. Seating is a different experience depending on where you sit. First visit upon walking in we walked to the right past the brick oven stove and into a room. I liked it better in there then during our second visit we walked to right upon entering and sat in the open area. read more

We have been roadtripping through Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Dinner plans have not been the greatest. We happened on this gem of a restaurant because it's 1/4 mile from our motel. What a find! You know that it's good when the parking lot is full. We were told our wait time would be 45 to 60 minutes. They got us in at about 45 minutes. The food and service was exceptional, well worth the wait! The atmosphere was relaxed with a New England charm. The mussels in curry sauce was phenomenal! Never had mussels prepared that way, delicious! The wood oven pizza was great, perfectly sauced with delicious toppings. The pepperoni pizza is not your ordinary pepperoni pizza. The hot honey adds a little extra flavor. We had great, friendly service from both our server and other staff. Great dining experience, highly recommend this restaurant. read more

The Bench exceeded all of our expectations. It's located right across Field Guide Lodge where we stayed, and we were able to get seated right away. We ordered the mussels, duck fat fries, a side of broccolini (not on the menu but they gave a few stems of it to us for $3), and the rastaman pizza. The waitress helped portion the delivery of each dish out well so that our 2-person table wasn't jammed packed with too much food. The mussels were all cooked to perfection. It's a hefty amount for a dish categorized under the starters label, and only 1 mussel tasted a bit questionable/bad. The red sauce had a little bit of kick to it, and my boyfriend and I would take the duck fat fries (delicious on its own) and dunked it into the sauce. At the end, we even took our spoons and spooned out as much sauce as we could. Then came the pizza. We must have severely misjudged the size because it was a lot bigger than what we expected. I was only able to eat 1 slice since I was already stuffed full of mussels and fries, but we saved the bulk of it for the next day and ate it on our drive back to Boston, and it was still delicious at room temp. Not sure if I'll ever be back in Stowe again, but I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is there! read more
