Once again I had the opportunity to have a great lunch in the Big Rig. As usual the specials were excellent. I ordered the fried fish with rutabaga and greens. My wife enjoyed meat loaf with a house salad and mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was perfectly prepared and delicious. The Rig is open 24 hours a day and decorated with a 1960s posters and photos. Each time I visit I enjoy the Deep South atmosphere and food. Breakfast was always good although portions are huge for a guy like me. The pancake is absurdly huge and a turnoff when I just am in the mood for a short stack. Still the cooking is great overall but lately theyve been allowing dogs in the restaurant and I dont mean service animals. I mean loud yapping dogs that are an annoyance. I also am sensitive to fur so I find it rude that this is even allowed. There is plenty of outdoor seating and other pet owners use it which is fine. Went here on Christmas Day, happy to find a restaurant open after our Christmas plans changed. They offered a Christmas special or you could order off of the regular menu. We spent the night in Orange City the night before, so the next morning we were looking for a new breakfast spot to try. From the reviews, we got the impression this was a popular spot for locals. Upon walking in, it gives off the ambiance of a Waffle House. Definitely more cafeteria-ish than homey. I felt very unsure about staying, but I squelched my misgivings due to the great reviews I'd seen. My husband got the smoked sausage and eggs, and I got the steak hash with eggs. My husband really liked his sausage, so he let me taste it, and I'd agree it was quite good. Honestly, I don't know what all the fanfare is about the steak hash, because I really didn't care for it. Also, the coffee was the worst i believe we've ever had, and neither of us could drink it at all. The iced tea wasn't much better. If they had better drinks and better ambiance, I could give the place four stars based on my husband's breakfast, but since my breakfast also only merited three stars, that's what I'm going to have to go with. read more

She wanted breakfast so I looked around the Deland area for good breakfast and stumbled on the Big Rig since they are open 24/7 and we wanted good homemade type of breakfast. I'm so glad we decided to stop by because their service was amazing and their food was just as good. My mom got some eggs and ham with some toast and hash browns, which she loved. I got their country steak with gravy, fried eggs and hash browns and I asked for a biscuit. Their biscuit is OK, nothing special... but everything else was amazing. The eggs were perfectly made and went well with my hash browns. My server said their country fried steak was very tender and she was not lying, the most tender and tasty I've had. If you're looking for breakfast in the Deland area give them a try!! Quit going to these national chains and give the folks at the big rig a try!! Is this a 5 star restaurant? Of course not. Is it a 5 star community breakfast place? More like a 10 star. Pleasantly greeted when we entered. Beverages brought on the double by one of the most pleasant waitresses ever. Specials explained, questions answered, orders placed. Out came the food - super hot, exactly as ordered. Beef tips, eggs, home fries and raisin toast. Meat was deliciously tender. Amazing how hard it is to get a perfectly cooked breakfast - this place does it right. That's where the BIG breakfasts are. Friend had fried chicken and French toast, $10.95. I had an assortment of breakfast food- eggs, pancake, biscuit w gravy, homefries. Everything but the pancake came out together. Served by a spicy lady from New York with blue leopard glasses. Haha. After I ordered, she says that's a lot of food. I smiled and she cocked her head and said what are you starving or something? We laughed and continued to make jokes the rest of the morning. Apparently if I ate all my food I would not get a free BigRig2 t-shirt. But the crusty old man next to me said I'd get something! I don't know what he meant but I certainly didn't want anything from him!!! Lol. I was stuffed. Took half my pancake home and they even gave me syrup to go. Boom. Nice touch. Breakfast for the two of us was 24 and change. Not bad considering how much food we had. The coffee was not good. Don't bother getting it. It's $2.50 and it tastes weak and bland. I wished I had a Starbucks via to dump in it. I like my coffee strong like jet fuel and black. No sugar. No cream or milk. So their coffee did not hit the spot. I tried my friends chicken. It was crispy and good but had that three day old fry oil taste to it which made it taste like Chinese chicken wings. The French toast could use a little help. I would return again for the pancake and biscuits and gravy. And I'd like to try the grits and cornbread. The place is a diner, so don't get dressed up. But it felt clean.
